RCHS - The Next Generation
As many of you know, the Routt
County Humane Society (RCHS) –
as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit
organization – has been working
closely with and supporting the
operations of the city-owned and
operated Steamboat Springs Animal
Shelter for many years. Because the
two entities have worked so closely
together, many people may not even
realize that they are separate. Well,
that confusing arrangement is about
to change! RCHS is negotiating with
the City and preparing to assume full
responsibility for the animal shelter,
beginning in May 2015.
Under the new arrangement, the
City will continue to own the animal
shelter facility and will lease the
building to RCHS, who will operate it.
This will allow RCHS to continue
to provide the excellent service and
care for animals that the community is
accustomed to at the animal shelter,
and to provide new services that
are not currently available. RCHS
will continue to operate an “open
admission” shelter. The shelter will
continue to accept and care for all
strays and bite-holds as they wait
for their owners; it will continue
to return animals to their owners,
receive surrenders, sell pet licenses,
promote adoptions, and provide
protection, feeding, a clean and
healthy environment, and medical
care for all the animals that are being
sheltered. RCHS will also continue
to manage the state-mandated spay/
neuter program and provide financial
assistance to low-income families for
pet spay/neuter surgeries. In taking
over the management of the shelter,
1
RCHS also intends to:
• Increase the staffing and expand
the hours of operation at the
shelter
• Provide micro-chipping and
behavioral training for shelter
animals
• Better manage costs for our spay/
neuter program and medical care
for shelter animals
• Implement a Shelter Management Database to track shelter
animals, medical records and
licenses
• Offer programs for emergency
veterinary care, spay/neuter and
education through the shelter
• Increase community involvement and volunteerism
• Reduce the financial obligation
and liability for the City of
Steamboat Springs
• Free up time for the City Animal
Control Officers to patrol and
investigate animal-related cases
This will be a big project and we are
very excited about it! But, as you can
imagine, making these improvements
and integrating shelter operations into
the RCHS budget will be expensive.
We will be working with the City of
Steamboat Springs and Routt County
on service contracts to cover about
half of the shelter costs. Our best
estimations indicate that we will
need additional grants, fundraising
and donations of about $60,000
beyond the average yearly funds that
we have raised in the past.
So here it comes…… Please help
RCHS move into our next generation
of support for animal welfare with
a donation today.
Please help Routt County Humane Society in its important work with shelter DOGS
Thank you to all our current Kennel Sponsors!
SPONSOR A DOG KENNEL
At the Steamboat Springs/ Routt County Animal Shelter
RCHS spends over $50,000 per year on medical assistance, spay/
neuter, and medicines for shelter animals. The kennel sponsorship
program provides a great opportunity for families, community
groups and companies to support the shelter animals.
To acknowledge sponsorship of a dog kennel, a plaque will be
attached to the front of the kennel, displaying the sponsor’s
name and additional information such as ‘memorial’ or ‘in
honor of ’. You will also receive a Certificate. Sponsorships are
tax deductible.

programs for medical assistance and spaying/neutering of
shelter animals and assistance for pets of low-income
residents in our county.

Special Pets Waiting for Special Forever Homes
Captain, an Akita and American
Bulldog mix (18 months old) was
surrendered to the shelter because he
needed more training than his family
could give him. He loves people, is
very engaging, and will work for
treats. He will need a special home
with someone who understands the
breeds, has a fenced yard, and will
work with a trainer to help him learn
social skills. RCHS will provide
up to five training sessions for
Captain and his new owner.
Angel (8 year old female), is very
sweet and affectionate, but a bit of
a scardy cat. She was surrendered
7 months ago and has not enjoyed
being with the other cats, so she has
spent most of her time in a cat cage.
She is currently in foster care to give
her a little more space. She loves a
good ear scratch and even likes belly
rubs. She would really like to find
a quiet home where she can be the
only pet.
Adoption Tales
Endings and New Beginnings
Many Steamboat residents knew about
Ted, the infamous airport cat. Ted
had been adopted from the Steamboat
Springs Animal Shelter in 2003 and
was well-known at the Steamboat
Airport where he greeted arrivals,
rode on the hoods of trucks, and
stowed away in planes. Once he was
discovered, mid-flight, on the way to
Albuquerque, and had to spend a few
days there. Unfortunately, Ted died
last August from feline infectious peritonitis, an incurable disease.
Hugo was adopted in late August by
the Classic Air Medical team at the
Steamboat Airport to do mouse patrol.
His new name is Zulu Mike after the
call letters of their air ambulance,
N407ZM. He has definitely learned
the fine art of mousing and has
become an integral part of the Classic
Air Medical Team facility. He is no
‘Ted’, whose repuation will live on, but
he has found a great home and is doing
a great job .... and apparently, he is
even learning CPR.
With Ted gone, the mice began to
play and multiply. Enter Hugo, a four
month old kitten, also adopted from
the Steamboat Springs Animal Shelter.
Hugo was found in Milner at the end
of July and brought to the Animal
Shelter where he received a wellness
check from Dr. Kim Radway and
vaccinations from the shelter staff.
