Story by Frederic Roy
A
bout 15 years ago the luxury
liquor industry in Europe had
a major re-alignment. Prior to
that time, liquor companies had
a very institutional behavior, mostly boring black packaging with gold type. Three
major reasons provoked the big shift.
First of all, to improve on their business,
the liquor industry understood that they
had so seduce their customers. Then,
they thought they had to start addressing
women, and finally, they were looking
towards a financial up-lifting: limited by
their production (especially champagne),
they had to create value. They did that
by creating a premium sector, and this
is especially true to vodkas such as Grey
Goose, Belvedere and Ciroc, and Veuve
Clicquot with amazing new designs.
Then the industry looked around to find
someone who could help them achieve
this transformation. And they asked a
young perfume designer Denis Boudard
in Paris who had started his company a
few years back named QSLD, (in French)
“Qu’on Se Le Dise. ” A possible translation
in English would be “Let It Be Known.”
More than five years in the luxury
perfume design and packaging in Paris,
Denis Boudard happened to be a perfect
designer choice for the Luxury liquor
industry: he was steep into the techniques to seduce the customers with
the packaging, he knew how to talk to
women, and the products he created for
the perfume industry sold at premium
prices. With his unique expertise Denis
Boudard filled all three components of
the big transformation.
“15 years ago,” he says, “suddenly
a third of the Champagne producers
knocked on my door, they wanted to
talk to women, there was a lot in common between the fragrance industry and
the luxury liquor industry.”
So 15 years later, Denis Boudard is
one of the leading designers of Luxury
Goods for the liquor industry. He has
transformed every aspect of the Veuve
Cliquot line of packaging, researching
100 years history of shapes and forms,
and although he was allowed to change

the shape of the bottle itself, he created a
fabulous array of ice buckets, refrigerating
packaging, and many other great ideas,
shaping Veuve Clicquot with a remarkable
new image for the 21st century.
In vodkas, he has created the look for
Ciroc and Belvedere, two of the top 3
premium vodkas with Grey Goose, he has
worked for Moët & Chandon, Remy Martin and many others.
Still he is one of the top designers for
perfume packaging with productions for
Guerlain, Escada, Lacoste, Mercedes-Benz,

but also for American companies who
try to break into the luxury segment, for
example Hollister.
In 2007, he had the great honor to
have his design chosen in a competition
with the World’s 6 best perfume designers
to become the Fifi Award trophy (for no
better word), the Fifi is to the fragrance
industry what the Oscar is to the film
industry.
And to top it all, Denis Boudard lives
right here in Wellington, a couple of
streets beyond the scoreboard of Engel &
Völkers Field at IPC. He escaped the Parisian hustle and bustle and after a couple of
years in Tampa chose to live in Wellington
with his wife and two children. His main
atelier is in Paris and he has offices in
London, Geneva and New York.

Sunday’s match on the Engel
& Vӧlkers Field between Orchard
Hill and Valiente possessed all the
drama, determination, and excitement that polo fans have come to
expect at an international highgoal tournament. The two teams
were tied 6-6 at the end of the first
half. Orchard Hill power players,
Facundo Pieres and Polito Pieres,
scored an extraordinary six goals
in the fourth chukker, doubling
their lead to 12-6. Valiente roared
back in the fifth, scoring four
goals to tighten the gap, 12-10.
A field goal and a penalty shot
by each team in the sixth chukker
brought the final score to 14-12,
with Orchard Hill taking the win.
Ezequiel Ferrario was named
Most Valuable Player, and the
Best Playing Pony award went to
Jackie, a masterful thoroughbred
that carried Polito Pieres to his
goals in the fourth chukker.

Veuve Clicquot Fashion
on the Field
Selecting a fashion standout
among Sunday’s style setters is
always a daunting task. However,
Rachel Smith won over the judges
with her cool, fitted, bright orange
shell that was perfectly matched
with a vibrant orange and blue
skater skirt, and offset with chic,
blue suede heels and a matching
purse.
Veuve Clicquot Rosé Champagne
Veuve Clicquot presented its light
and refreshing pink champagne to
spirit-loving sophisticates, with chic
tastings during Sunday’s Champagne Brunch. The halftime divot
stomp included generous pours of
the elegant bubbly. Glasses filled
with sparkling rosé glistened in the
afternoon sunshine, while polo fans
and guests sipped the elegant libation and strolled back to their seats
for the second half of the fiercely
contested match.
