tissue donation. Her Dad Michael Shepherd became
an organ donor in 2011.
She remembers her Dad as someone who was
“always there for us. He was keen for us kids to
toe the line and even a bit authoritarian, but if we
needed anything he was the first to offer assistance,” she says.
Michael, 76, had been a hospital orderly at the
Royal Adelaide and Repatriation Hospitals. At the
time he had been married for 55 years to Fran, an
Enrolled Nurse. They had three children, six grandchildren and one great grand-child.
As he aged, Michael’s sight and hearing had
deteriorated but he was otherwise healthy. Then
one day at home with Fran, he suffered a massive
brain haemorrhage.
“The ambulance took him straight to Flinders
Medical Centre,” says Sue, a Registered Nurse at
Kalyra, Belair. “Dad was on a ventilator but we
knew that night that he was not going to survive,”
she says.
“Just knowing him, and the conversations we’d
had as a family, we knew he wasn’t at all in favour
of being on life support and we had no hesitation
when DonateLife approached us about organ and
tissue donation.
“He was surrounded by his family – there was no
disagreement – we were all on the same page.”
Michael’s liver and kidneys helped to transform
three people’s lives.
“Dad was always keen to ensure nothing was
wasted – if there was stale cake Mum had to make
it into a pudding,” says Sue. “We said, he’s still not
wasting anything!”
Sue’s commitment to organ and tissue donation
remains strong. “More people should do it,” she
says.“It’s not a hard thing to say yes to – if there’s
not going to be any quality of life.
However many people may not be aware that
even if you indicate on your SA driver’s licence that
you wish to donate organs, you are only recording
your ‘intent’.
To give your ‘consent’ to donate, you need to
sign on to the Australian Organ Donor Register
(AODR) which is held by Medicare. If you are in a
position to become a donor,
medical staff will check this
national online database,
before speaking with your
family.

“IN 1915, there were only fifty families in
Coromandel Valley,” said Blackwood RSL
President, Frank Blamey. “It makes you think
of the effect of the War on the community at
that time; 26 sons went to war and nine didn’t
come back.”
Following negotiations with Onkaparinga
Council, Frank hopes the restoration and
relocation of nine plinths commemorating
Coromandel’s Great War heroes will be
completed in time for ANZAC day this year.
In his letter to Council last year, Frank
highlighted the plinths weren’t really visible
from the footpath, and many of them also
needed to be cleaned and repaired.
Frank felt the plinths needed to be properly
displayed so people could see the Digger’s
sacrifice, and said many Blackwood RSL
members would voluntary offer their time and
equipment to help.
The original Memorial was built from
contributions from the fifty households of the
Valley.
According to monumentaustralia.org.au, a
total of £268 was raised to build it, which was
an average of £5 from each household - more
than two weeks’ average wage at the time.
In 2000, the monument was restored and
moved 1000 metres north of its original
location however the plinths, inscribed with

“Although the plinths have been recreated
in the new memorial, the original ones are
historical markers, which is why they should be
restored and relocated,” explained Frank.
Coromandel resident Claire Phillips,
a relative of Frederick Jones and Alfred
Watchman who are commemorated on two
of the plinths, thought it was good the plinths
were being looked after and restored.
She said the men were her great uncles
on both her mother’s and father’s side of the
family.
“They’ve never been forgotten by us, and this
new position means they will be remembered
by new generations,” she said.
An Onkaparinga Council officer has met
with Frank Blamey to discuss the relocation
and Council was now working to determine the
appropriate concept plan, consultation, funding
and potential programing of these works.
Frank is delighted with Council’s response
and is looking forward to seeing the plinths’
restoration and relocation in time for ANZAC
Day this year.

Long awaited traffic plan to be
released soon for consultation
PLANS to address Blackwood’s roads and traffic problems are
underway following a meeting late last year with Blackwood
Action Group (BAG), Blackwood Belair & District Community
Association (BBDCA), Mitcham Council and the Department of
Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).
A DPTI spokesperson confirmed the meeting was to provide
an overview of a draft Road Management Plan (RMP) for a
section of Main Road and Shepherds Hill Road.
“The plan will highlight locations where improvements can be
made for traffic access and movements. These locations will be
released when it goes out for public comment,” the spokesperson
said. “Development of the plan is continuing as stakeholder
comments are received. The Plan will be finalised after the
consultation process.”
The local council and community groups will receive a copy
of the final draft plan as part of stakeholder communication
processes before it is released for public comment, which is
expected to occur early this year.
Andrew Tidswell, BAG president said the group was
waiting with great interest the release of the Blackwood Road
Management Plan. “There are important issues that need
addressing in the area, including the Blackwood roundabout
(now considered by the RAA to be “SA’s riskiest intersection”),
other difficult intersections, as well as pedestrian and bicycle
safety issues,” he highlighted.
Karen Hockley, BBDCA president was looking forward to the
release of the plan and strongly encouraged people to contribute
to the consultation process. “Only the people who live and drive
in the area fully understand the issues we are facing,” she said.

DO you think you have good general knowledge on a wide
variety of topics - then you could be in line to scoop all the
prizes on offer at a quiz night.
The Rotary Club of Coromandel Valley will be holding a
“Quiz Night” on Saturday 22 February at the
Blackwood Memorial Hall, the proceeds of which
will help fund the presentation of the 2014 ‘Good
Citizen Awards’ for students at local primary
schools.
Each year the Club presents awards to two
students nominated by school staff for displaying
excellent community focussed attitudes and
actions throughout the school year.
Between 8 and 10 local primary schools
participate each year, and students receive a certificate and a
book voucher to acknowledge their contribution to the school,
presented by a member of the Club at the end of year graduation
ceremony.
Tickets to the quiz night cost $10 per head, with
doors opening at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. BYO
refreshments, and preferably get a group of 8
together for each table. There will be a great array
of prizes, for what should be a good fun night!!

THE City of Mitcham’s trial of an ‘at call’
domestic hard waste collection service has been
a great success with residents who have used the
service since it’s inception.
With the cost of taking waste to a rubbish tip
escalating every year, it is a welcome relief to be
able to get rid of most hard waste through this
valuable Council service.
It has also contributed to a substantial
reduction in the pilfering from the roadside
collections which often used to result in an
‘unsightly’ mess left on the verge.
With such positive feedback Council has
decided to continue to collect domestic hard
waste as an ‘at call’ service.
Many ratepayers may have had time over the
holiday period to sort out their hard waste, but
they must remember the free service has to be
booked in advance.
Residents are entitled to one hard waste
collection each financial year and it is necessary
to pre-book your hard waste collection and only
place the material out on the verge no earlier
than 24 hours before your scheduled day.
Council will collect up to two cubic metres
of hard waste including: furniture, mattresses,
refrigerators and freezers (please remove doors),
whitegoods, floor coverings (up to 1.5m lengths),
sheets of iron and guttering (up to 1.5m lengths),
timber off cuts (up to 1.5m lengths), dismantled
clothes lines, blinds and window coverings,
bikes and toys, air conditioners, small items
of scrap metal, hot water services, and lawn
mowers; tree and shrub prunings cut into 2
metre lengths and tied in bundles (max of 30cm
diameter); and rainwater tanks (segments no
larger than up to 1.5m lengths).

◆ John Cameron, a resident at ‘The Heights Retirement Village’ in Bellevue Heights
has been helping to install Rotary nesting boxes in trees around the Village
CLEARING of land for housing and farming,
plus the demand for firewood has meant that over
the years, thousands of trees have disappeared
from the landscape - resulting in many native
animals having to look for a new home and
breeding sites.
Some existing hollows in trees are occupied by
feral honey bees and starlings, so many species
are threatened with extinction because of lost
habitat and lack of nesting hollows.
Fourteen or fifteen years ago, Rotary started
‘ROBIN’ (a Native Bird Nest Box Project) and
encourages members of Rotary Clubs, schools
and community groups to construct and install
nest boxes with over 3,000 boxes now in various
locations throughout the state.
The Rotary Club of Blackwood has recently
undertaken the construction of these nesting
boxes to sell to local homeowners.
The boxes, which are made from permapine
can be hung in domestic gardens and are suitable
for rosellas, rainbow laurikeets, pardalotes,
possums and kookaburras.
Homeowners who have already installed these
boxes were surprised how quickly the birds have
settled in to their new home.

The parking of vehicles in many hill’s narrow
streets may potentially create serious problems
