SELECTING THE RIGHT LIFTGATE
Liftgates are hydraulic machines mounted on a vehicle which allow heavy cargo to be loaded or
unloaded with little effort. They use electrical power to actuate a hydraulic lifting system to lift
and lower a platform.
This might seem simple, but there are many factors to consider when selecting a liftgate.
Consider...
the Vehicle
Each liftgate is designed to be installed on a certain vehicle type and size.
The chart on the page 4 helps to separate which liftgates are the right fit for a vehicle by GVW.
the Cargo
Be sure to add all weight factors when selecting capacity: Load, Container, Pallet Jack or Cart and
Driver. Select a liftgate that has enough capacity to handle the heaviest load it will ever encounter.
the Life Cycle
Will this truck be working in New York or California? Does it need to last 3 years, or 20 years?
Match the liftgate model and options to the expectations for the entire vehicle’s useful life.
the Process
The liftgate must be a good fit for the operation. For instance, dock loading requires a liftgate that
moves out of the way of the rear door opening.
Also consider the type of loading equipment to be used, and the dimensions of the load.
And Don’t Forget Bed Height!
Bed height range is an important number when selecting a liftgate, every liftgate has a minimum
and maximum.
Be sure that the chosen model will function on the vehicle both laden and unladen.
