Described as a modern day renaissance woman, she’s a quadruple threat, carving out her own lane in today’s music scene as one of the few artists in history able to straddle both Rock and Soul genres. Moye’s musical narrative boasts an impressive resume that includes making history as the first African-American woman to play the National Anthem on guitar at a professional sporting event, all the way to performing at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tribute concert for music pioneer Chuck Berry. And recently, Moye was praised by Jet Magazine as “the highlight of the evening” after she headlined the largest peace concert on the west coast with Chaka Khan honoring the legendary humanitarian Stevie Wonder. With an electrifying stage show, Moye delivers an intoxicating fusion of funk, and Rock. Her critically acclaimed LP Diamonds & Guitars reached number 35 on Amazon.com and iTunes respectively and a number 50 slot on the Billboard album charts, showcasing an eclectic pallet of music while preserving its mainstream appeal. Abroad and stateside, Moye’s Diamonds & Guitars tour served her as an opening act with Robin Thicke, and legendary rock group Journey. A pioneer among the new generation of lead guitarists, Moye is the first left-handed female player to be included on the legendary Fender Guitars’ impressive roster of endorsees, and to also join the critically acclaimed 2012 Experience Hendrix tour. Furthermore, the songstress was featured in the UK documentary “Stratmaster: The Greatest Guitar Story Ever Told,” and Guitar World Magazine dubbed Moye the “female Jimi Hendrix” and “one of the top 10 female guitarists to know.” UK’s Blues and Soul Magazine touted Moye as having “…all the ingredients to shake the modern soul room.” In addition to being on Sony’s writing team, Moye independently released her first R&B single “Girlfriend” through her WCE Records to great reviews and a number 43 slot on the R&B/HipHop Billboard chart. Then, Moye followed-up with her second single “Alone,” which remained on the charts for 32 consecutive weeks. “Alone” peaked at no 9 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts and at number 27 on the hot 100. Rolling stone, Billboard Magazine and some of music’s hottest names have raved that Moye is “a ground-breaking artist who makes indelible impression.” Moye’s humanitarian efforts include serving as an ambassador for HRH Prince Charles’ Prince’s Trust for which she donated her single “Hustler’s Blues” to the Wilberforce 200 compilation CD. The record was one of the fastest selling soul CD’s on iTunes UK with all proceeds going to the Trust and UNICEF. Cover girl Malina Moye continues to build a brand name globally, appearing in campaigns like Victoria Secret’s “Love Rocks” and shoe chain Steve Madden’s Music amongst other retail powerhouses. Moye is currently finishing her new record entitled Rock ‘N Roll Baby slated for a first quarter release. The first single, “K-Yotic” featuring Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Bootsy Collins, delivers the raw energy of rock coupled with the power of funk. malinamoye.com 16 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 17 Katy Perry Katy Perry cemented her status as a best-selling superstar with the global success of her second studio album, Teenage Dream, which debuted at #1 in 8 countries and spent over two years on Billboard’s Top 200 album sales chart. She became the only female artist to have 5 #1 singles from one album on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (“California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”). The special edition, Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, added “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake” to Perry’s list of nine Top 40 chart-toppers (dating back to her multi-platinum debut album, 2008’s One of the Boys, which generated four hit singles: “I Kissed A Girl,” “Hot N Cold,” “Thinking of You” and “Waking Up In Vegas”). “Roar,” the first single from her new album, PRISM, became Katy Perry’s 10th #1 Top 40 track after debuting at #1 on iTunes in 68 countries with 557,024 downloads in its first week of release, the biggest digital song sales week of 2013. A new threshold, a new light - this is Katy Perry’s PRISM, a compilation of songs that not only reflect her inner light, but also refract a colorful and mesmerizing wave of change in her music and life. On the heels of 2010’s Grammy-nominated Teenage Dream, and after what proved to be one of the most challenging years of her personal life, Katy Perry’s cotton-candy world took a turn down a road of self-reflection as she was creating her new album. “I did a lot of figuring out who I am and reconnecting with myself and growing,” she says. “I’ve let a lot of light in, and through that it’s inspired me to write certain songs that are full of that wonderful positivity.” The name, in a sense, says it all. “I feel like a walking prism. I get to shine a light and beam it to all of my listeners through my songs. I am really proud of all of the songs on this record, and every one says something different. There are a lot of different colors, a lot of different moods, and a lot of different emotions. I’ve learned a lot of things in the past year as I was making it. When I started writing in November 2012, I was in a much darker place. You can see the transition I was going through in the first song I wrote for the record with Greg Wells, ‘By the Grace of God.’ Then, there came a point this past year where I needed to reflect and sit down and be like, ‘Okay, what’s going on inside of me, and what are some things I need to get clear and deal with? How can I help myself get to the next level and grow?’ I guess you just have to be open and ready for it.” In the spring, Perry returned to the studio and her hometown of Santa Barbara, which has been a bedrock of creativity for her for years. “That’s where I wrote the song, ‘Teenage Dream,’ and I kind of go back to the essence of myself out there. I get to reconnect with who I was when I picked up a guitar at 13 and really understood why I wanted to contribute to the music scene. It really brings me back to my roots in every single way. Music is so powerful and spiritual - it’s like the sixth sense. It moves people in so many different ways; it creates memories, it sets the tone, it sets the scene. Going home makes me forget all of the distractions and lets me remember myself just as a musician. I can strip away the make-up layers a little bit and get to the essential oils of who I am.” These Santa Barbara sessions, with Perry’s ‘dream team’ of Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Cirkut, yielded seven of PRISM’s 13 tracks (16 on the deluxe): “Legendary Lovers,” “Birthday,” 18 360 MAGAZINE katyperry.com “Unconditionally,” “Dark Horse,” “International Smile,” “Ghost,” and Perry’s 10th #1 Top 40 track, the lead single, “Roar.” In the summer, Katy Perry brought a new-found love of 90’s-era deep house music to producers Max Martin and Klas Ahlund in Stockholm, Sweden, and the results were club anthem “Walking On Air” and the hip-hop tinged “This Is How We Do.” “I was hanging out in Central Park one day with my DJ friend Mia Moretti, and we came across these roller skaters just skating around to this deep house music, and I told Mia, ‘I have to write a song like that!’ These songs have that Wendy & Lisa meets CeCe Peniston’s ‘Finally’ meets Crystal Waters’ ‘100% Pure Love’ vibe.” The record also features collaborations with Bloodshy (“Love Me”), Greg Kurstin and Sia (“Double Rainbow”), as well as a return to the studio with “Firework” producers Stargate (“This Moment”). Perry co-wrote every autobiographical track. “Being a writer for me is also about being an observer - observing culture, observing people and relationships, observing myself and my feelings. I put all that stuff in there. I write with my girlfriend Bonnie McKee a lot, but sometimes I write by myself. The lyrics to my favorite song on the album, ‘Unconditionally,’ just came to me all at once. It’s just about me being able to tell my story completely and with great imagery. It’s kind of mathematical - this adds, this subtracts - but in general the theme this time around is just me. I look at the record as telling my whole story, not just making sure every song is a hit. And as much as I enjoyed the candy confection era, I think it’s nice to get back to my roots for a bit.” 360 MAGAZINE 19 In his landmark project entitled Before They Pass Away, Jimmy Nelson captures the lives and traditions of the last surviving tribes who have managed to preserve their traditional ways, art and customs within our increasingly globalized world. The British photographer’s epic portraits (shot with large-plate field camera) present these dignified inheritors of noble and age-old traditions in a proud spirit and in all their glory—a breathtaking unique visual experience. This exquisitely photographed showcase for world tribal culture is not only a joy to look at, but also an important historical record with its intricate details and fine nuances. Set against the backdrop of some of the world’s most pristine landscapes, this book reveals the wide variety of human experiences and cultural expressions across the ages. 20 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 21 Jimmy Nelson was born in Sevenoaks, Kent in 1967 and started working as a photographer in 1987. Having spent 10 years at a Jesuit boarding school in the North of England, he set off on his own to traverse the length of Tibet on foot. The journey lasted a year, and upon his return his unique visual diary—which featured revealing images of a previously inaccessible Tibet—was published to wide international acclaim. Soon after he was commissioned to cover a variety of culturally newsworthy themes, ranging from the Russian involvement in Afghanistan and the ongoing strife between India and Pakistan in Kashmir to the beginning of the war in former Yugoslavia. In early 1994 he and his Dutch wife produced Literary Portraits of China, a 30-month project that brought them to all the hidden corners of the newly opening People’s Republic. Upon its completion, the images were exhibited in the People’s Palace on Tiananmen Square, Beijing, followed by a worldwide tour. From 1997 onwards, Nelson began to successfully undertake commercial advertising assignments for many of the world’s leading brands. At the same time, he began accumulating images of remote and unique cultures photographed with a traditional 50-year-old plate camera. Many awards followed. When he started to successfully and internationally exhibit and sell these images, this created the subsequent momentum and enthusiasm for thei nitiation of Before they Pass Away. beforethey.com 22 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 23 The NISSAN Verve It is so versatile even the band Mona uses it to get their gear to the next awesome gig. Raised by a Jamaican father and Uruguayan mother, the family was constantly moving from city to city, shifting between their luxury homes in England, Jamaica and Spain. But after her father’s arrest and imprisonment, her penthouse-to-pavement story truly began. “My teenage years were spent trying to survive in London on my own and rebelling against the abnormality,” she says. “I tried to grow up too fast and create some stability, but I always got it wrong. I had left home, gotten in a horrible relationship, quit my job, run away to Paris, joined a cult, signed a bad record deal, been taken away in the back of police cars, tried to burn my house down and dreamed of ending it all. And I hadn’t even turned 18!” Flat broke, three years later, she moved to the United States to continue making music and, after living in run-down Hollywood motels, selling her own clothes to get by and relentlessly writing her life away, she had a chance to meet the Grammywinning hit maker, will.i.am who instantly recognized Kills’ talent and determination, and signed her to his imprint at Interscope Records. In 2011, after partnering with Cherrytree Records (Ellie Goulding, La Roux, Robyn, Far East Movement), Natalia Kills released her debut album, Perfectionist, which spawned 2 top 10 hits in Europe and over 750,000 singles in sales. Kills then went on touring the world with Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and The Black Eyed Peas, eventually scoring her own headlining tour in Europe. reveals. “I listen to dive in,” listing Hole, Marilyn Manson, and Eminem among her favorite artists to whom she grew up listening. In reflecting on one of Trouble’s more wistful tracks, the sweet and breezy “Outta Time,” which she wrote for “every boy who ever loved me and tried to save me,” she declares herself “un-savable.” “Saturday Night” is a soaring, emotional ode to her troubled family and a frantic attempt to regain the happy childhood she never had; the tune cuts deep with self-reassuring lyrics that swallow her denial and desperation. “Finally I’m not looking for forgiveness,” says Kills. “Rather, I’m at a place where it means more to own up to all the wrong things I’ve done and to bring some kind of power to them. The point of writing Trouble is to turn the worst bits of my life into what will be the best ones.” nataliakills.com Her latest album Trouble was written and recorded in collaboration with renowned producers Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Jay Z, fun.) and Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey, Kid Cudi, Eminem). The record combines Kills’ razor-sharp lyrics with her unique and robust vocal delivery, propelling her music into even wilder territory than that on her debut. With its beautifully crashing drums over lonely screeching vocals and apocalyptic guitars, Trouble is a defiant middle finger to wasted youth and disenchantment as Kills depicts each of the personal tales with a brutally palpable intensity. “I don’t listen to music to let go,” she 40 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 41 anyilu.com Martian Watches took the smartwatch to the next level by adding hands-free voice communication. During this time in junior high/high school Sabor Latino began writing poems of what he saw on a daily basis. He wrote poems about life struggles, education, and emotions. As he started to show his poems to family, teachers and friends, the reaction Sabor Latino received only gave him more motivation to continue writing poems as he started to realize that powerful words help in motivating individuals. In high school Sabor Latino began to take music more seriously and eventually thought of putting out an album. He first decided to go to college and become a better writer and an excellent student. After going to college and graduating with as Bachelor’s degree in education/psychology, Sabor Latino started to working as a social work for a foster care agency. Tickets for the concert were earned through the Global Citizen platform, where fans took online action to earn their admission. There is a rock song. There’s a pop song. There’s a ballad. There’s a very raw, hippie style. And, one song is electronic.” This electronic song is “Hello Kitty,” on which she sings partially in Japanese. “I say, ‘minna saiko (you guys rock),’ ‘arigato (thank you),’ ‘kawaii (cute)’ in Japanese. And, it makes me think of all the times that I’ve been to Japan and all the fans. The song ‘Hello Kitty’ really just comes from my love for the brand and the character of Hello Kitty,” Lavigne explains of the song. Interestingly, the familiar lyric line in “Girlfriend” from her 2007’s The Best Damn Thing – “I am the motherf**king princess.” – appears again in “Rock N Roll” on the new self-titled album. “I did that on purpose. It’s an expression that happened naturally. It’s me being silly by saying, ‘I am the motherf**king princess!’ Because I say, ‘I am the motherf**king princess. You still love 64 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 65 it.’ – Like, you still love ‘it,’ meaning that I’m doing music again,” Lavigne exclaims, buzzing with excitement. “I worked with all new people on my new record, and I’ve made very good relationships with them so I will probably work with them again on my next record,” adds Lavigne. One of ‘them’ is, of course, Nickelback’s frontman, Chad Kroeger who Lavigne married on this year’s Canada Day, July 1st. “It was very natural. When we started dating, we knew right away that we wanted to get married so we did. Like, we met a long, long, long, long time ago when I was very young, but I don’t even really remember. Well, I guess we met at the MuchMusic [Video] Awards in Canada in 2003, or 2004,” clarifies Lavigne. “But we met ‘really’ when he came to work with me in Los Angeles in the studio. He came to write one song with me, and then it turned into making the whole records to each other, pretty much.” Avril Lavigne doesn’t want to talk about Deryck Whibley, Sum 41 or anything related, but she affirms that she could totally see herself getting married again at some point in life when her previous three-year-marriage to Whibley was over in 2009. Back in 2002, the headstrong 17-year-old Avril Lavigne’s breakout was beyond spectacular with her debut Let Go, having sold over 17 million copies worldwide. But, she only found herself completely wrapped up with a ridiculous amount of work in a rush mode. “I was just so focused on traveling and where I had to go, what I had to do, and working, working, working, work, work, work. I was too young to realize what I was achieving at that time,” Lavigne confesses. Avril Lavigne stated in a 2003 interview that she didn’t appreciate being called fake or punk, she didn’t think people would understand what it felt like to be in her shoes, and she thought the music industry was messed up (“That’s probably a really bad interview,” she acknowledges with a laugh). “I think that there’s a label. People label me a punk rock princess or a pop princess, and I think it’s very flattering and I like it. When I was very young, I didn’t really know what that meant. Now, I just think it’s cool,” says Lavigne. “I was always myself and today, I’m always myself. It’s the biggest challenge to be yourself doing what we do in music. And sometimes, there’s a trend but you’ve got to just be yourself. I’m just a normal human being, and I’m a musician. And, I love rock’n’roll. I love music. And, I love to have a good time,” Lavigne confidently states, deeply thinking of the fierce journey that’s 11 year long and counting. Lavigne’s future endeavors also include new pieces from her clothing line Abbey Dawn, and The Avril Lavigne Foundation in support of children and youth living with serious illnesses or disabilities. avrillavigne.com 66 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 67 LAUNCHES ITS iPHONE APP Listen, the sky has something to say... spira.com airfrance.com Mack Wilds They say you never forget your first love; when Mack Wilds first fell in love, he fell hard. “The city is like a beautiful struggle, a place where roses grow through the concrete” the 24-year old singer says of his native New York City, which is the inspiration for his debut LP New York: A Love Story. Tristan Paul Mack Wilds is best known for his acting roles as Michael Lee and Dixon Wilson on HBO’s “The Wire” and CW’s “90210” respectively, but before he hit Hollywood, Wilds dreamed of a career in music. “I don’t remember a time in my life when music wasn’t a factor in my life,” the Staten Island product says. “I was immersed in what music was in the ’90s. Everything we heard in hip-hop, I could look outside of my window in the projects and see it going on.” Growing up, Wilds saw his father sing in local bands. He looked to follow in his dad’s footsteps by practicing around their home in Stapleton housing projects, the same housing projects that produced numerous members of Wu-Tang Clan. Wilds’ earliest music influences were Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, but he also took to hip-hop idolizing MCs like Jay Z and Nas. At around the age of 13, after puberty hit, Wilds noticed his voice began to change and he then added rapping to his repertoire. “The music has always been my first love,” he says, even though his teenage years were spent acting on television and in films like 2008’s “The Secret Life of Bees” with Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning and in 2012’s “Red Tails” alongside Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard. “Even with all of the accomplishments, I still feel like I haven’t scratched the surface of where I’m supposed to be,” Wilds says. Mack Wilds hooked up with Grammy-nominated music producer Salaam Remi in 2012 and signed with his Sony-distributed Re Mi Fa record label. Together the two recorded New York: A Love Story, a 1990s hip-hop-centered, R&B-laced tale of love and loss. The album’s first single “Own It” is produced by Remi and written by Wilds and R&B superstar Ne-Yo. Backed by a kinetic drum track and a feel-good groove “Own It” is reminiscent of a throwback party when hip-hop was fresh, new and exciting. Wilds complements the boom-bap with his whispers of sweet nothings to his dream girl, with promises of a lavish life. The flirtatious thump of “Henny” and the seductive allure of “My Crib” both provide balance mixing calming melodies over harden hip-hop sound beds. While New York: A Love Story weaves a romantic tale, sonically it’s a nostalgic reminder of the Big Apple’s most defining sounds - suited for 2013 of course. mackwilds.com 360 MAGAZINE 71 Jaguar Reveals C-X17 Sports Crossover Concept in Frankfurt Model X is designed from the ground up to blend the best of an SUV with the benefits of a minivan, as only an electric car can. His last year’s adventure was Kisses On The Bottom, a collection of standards beloved to him since childhood as well as two new McCartney compositions “My Valentine” and “Only Our Hearts.” Created with the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band - as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder - Kisses On The Bottom was the first record in McCartney’s historic oeuvre to feature him almost exclusively on vocals. With the exception of a bit of acoustic guitar on two tracks, his sole instrument on Kisses On The Bottom was that unmistakable voice at its most intimate and unadorned. The world has recently seen the release of McCartney’s first album of brand NEW solo material in six years since 2007’s acclaimed Memory Almost Full. Talking about the album, McCartney said, “It’s funny, when I play people the album, they’re surprised it’s me. A lot of the tracks are quite varied and not necessarily in a style you’d recognize as mine. I didn’t want it to all sound the same. I really enjoyed making this album. It’s always great to get a chance to get into the studio with a bunch of new songs and I was lucky to work with some very cool producers. We had a lot of fun.” McCartney worked on NEW with producers Paul Epworth, Mark Ronson, Ethan Johns and Giles Martin. The album was recorded at Henson Recording Studios, Los Angeles; Avatar Studios, New York; Abbey Road Studios, London; Air Studios, London; Wolf Tone Studios, London and Hog Hill Mill, East Sussex. “The original idea was to go to a couple of producers whose work I loved, to see who I got on with best - but it turned out I got on with all of them! We made something really different with each producer, so I couldn’t choose and ended up working with all four. We just had a good time in different ways,” McCartney commented of the process. Being born in Liverpool on June 18, 1942, McCartney was raised in the city and educated at the Liverpool Institute. Having changed the world of music forever with The Beatles, McCartney has continued to push boundaries for over 40 years. Since writing his first song at the age of 14, McCartney has always followed his own unique muse while changing the course of musical history. It’s borderline ludicrous to attempt to describe the past, present and future impact of The Beatles and their legendary albums Please Please Me, With The Beatles, A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (a/k/a The White Album), Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be, so suffice to say that The Beatles’ 1 compilation was the biggest selling album of the first new millennial decade of 2000 - 2010. He is also an accomplished classical composer, with works ranging from 2011’s Ocean’s Kingdom score to 1991’s Liverpool Oratorio, 1997’s Standing Stone, 1999’s Working Classical, and 2006’s Ecce Cor Meum, which took Best Album honors at the 2007 Classical Brit Awards. McCartney’s many other citations have included the 2008 Brit award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, an honorary doctorate of music from Yale University, his 1999 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and being knighted in 1996 by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music. In June 2010, he performed in front of President Barack Obama and his family while becoming the firstever British recipient of the prestigious Gershwin Prize For Popular Song. He returned to the White House in December of that year (where even the President joked about McCartney becoming a regular) to receive a Kennedy Center Honor. 80 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 81 2012 saw McCartney adding MusiCares Person of the Year to this unrivalled list, the award recognizing both his incomparable creative achievements and his lifelong commitment to charitable work, which includes decades’ worth of philanthropic activities for PETA, LIPA, One Voice, The Vegetarian Society, Nordoff Robins and Adopt-A-Mine-Field - not to mention his participation in historic benefit concerts including Live Aid in 1985, The Concert for New York City in 2001, and Live 8 in 2005. While last year marked 40 years since McCartney’s premier tour as a solo artist, he’s currently on Out There! Tour, which has witnessed McCartney and his band travel the world throughout the year, even visiting some places they had never been before. The tour has also featured music from one of the best loved catalogues in popular music. McCartney has performed songs that span his entire career - as a solo artist, member of Wings and, of course, as a Beatle. With a reputation for live performance that rivals his songwriting prowess, McCartney has spent much of the last several years performing sold out concerts to literally millions of people the world over to universal rave reviews. The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity; in just three hours some of the greatest moments in music from the last 50 years are re-lived and for many have become the soundtrack to living. All of us have already seen an infinite set of new possibilities for Sir Paul McCartney. If any new musical frontier awaits be it an entirely new musical medium or genre, a city or song he’s never played before, or something the cleverest among us has yet to imagine - rest assured McCartney is already on his way there, just as McCartney sings on the NEW album’s title track, “We can do what we want, we can live as we choose.” paulmccartney.com 82 360 MAGAZINE 360 MAGAZINE 83 joefresh.com converse.com Pioneer’s DJ ART MIX Pioneer partnered with more than 25 of the best DJs, urban artists and major brands (Zedd, Kaskade, NERVO, LRG, Crystal Hefner and some of LA’s own urban artists) to create custom pieces of artwork using Pioneer’s renowned CDJ-2000nexus digital music player as the foundation. And with the release of her first U.S. single “Want U Back” — a cheeky slice of alternative urban pop that the Huffington Post said “sounds like an instant summer radio hit” — it’s easy to see why. As the New York Times put it: “…she’s the future.” An outspoken, determined individualist who has talent to back up the confident attitude, Lloyd has that intangible quality that draws people in, as well as the rare ability to straddle the evershifting line between commercial and credible. The notoriously tough-to-please Simon Cowell saw it for himself when Lloyd was a contestant on The X Factor and signed her to his Syco Music label, which released Sticks & Stones in the UK in 2011. Lloyd was signed by Epic Records head L.A. Reid when the music executive noticed her at a sound check for The X Factor USA, beckoned her over to meet him, and told her she was a star. “He didn’t even know who I was,” Lloyd says with amazement. The next day she found 110 360 MAGAZINE out that Reid had tapped her for Epic, which eventually released the U.S. version of Sticks & Stones with several brand-new tracks last year. Lloyd’s dynamic voice and considerable songwriting talent have also enticed a host of heavy-hitters to want to work with her, including songwriter and friend Savan Kotecha whom she credits with introducing her to other Sticks & Stones collaborators Max Martin (Britney Spears, Katy Perry), RedOne (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez), Shellback (P!nk, Maroon 5), and Kevin Rudolph (Lil Wayne). “Savan and I sat down and figured out what suited me best,” Lloyd says. “Then we took everything I’ve ever wanted to do musically but wasn’t sure about and tried it anyway. That’s why the album sounds a bit like a jukebox. Each track is different; there’s just a massive amount of variety.” Lloyd was involved in every creative decision, co-writing a number of songs during sessions in the U.S., Britain, and Sweden. Despite working with huge hitmakers, she made sure her ideas were put across. “Simon and L.A. trusted me,” she says. “They never set any rules or said, ‘You’re going to do this’ or ‘You’re going to sing that.’ They gave me freedom, so I just did what I wanted to do.” The result is a collection of contemporary, street-wise pop gems that are both frank and playful, including “Want U Back,” second UK single “With Ur Love” (featuring Mike Posner), the dubstep-fueled “Dub on the Track,” and the RedOne-produced “Playa Boi,” which reworks the lyrics of the Neneh Cherry classic “Buffalo Stance” and samples its unmistakable hook. Lloyd also proves she can handle emotional ballads with “Beautiful People,” on which she teams up with Chad Wolf of South Carolina alt-rock band Carolina Liar. “I don’t believe that I have to stay completely pop or just sing ballads,” she says. “If you’ve got a recognizable voice, you can sing any style and people will know it’s you. I believe the song shouldn’t take over the artist. The artist should take over the song.” Lloyd’s self-assuredness about her talent was hardwon. Growing up in the small town of Malvern, in England’s Worcestershire region, Lloyd knew she could sing from a young age, but didn’t perform for anyone until she was ten. “I was very shy about it,” she says. “I was a very quiet person. I struggled with being able to actually speak around people.” But eventually the need to be heard won out. “I come from a huge family and I always felt overshadowed,” she says. “People didn’t necessarily want to listen to what I had to say. I was always the girl in the background. So being onstage performing was my way of saying, ‘It’s my turn to be heard now.’” Driven to become a performer, Lloyd began checking out blogs, digital radio stations, and YouTube, where she discovered other aspiring artists posting videos of themselves singing hit songs. “I didn’t have the technology to post my own, or I would have, but I watched people get their success and I wanted the same thing,” she says. Inspired by Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne, Lloyd wanted to rap as well as sing and began practicing for hours at home in her bedroom. She decided to try out for The X Factor when auditions were held in nearby Birmingham. “There were so many people there,” she recalls. “I looked around and thought, ‘This isn’t for me. I don’t want to be queuing up to be told no.’ Because I hate being told no. But in the end I went for it because I don’t give up.” That determination sealed her fate. After finishing third runner up, Lloyd joined the “The X Factor Live” Tour, performing for half a million people throughout the UK in 2011 and earning a legion of devoted fans who call themselves “brats.” This past spring, she hit the road for the headlining UK Sticks & Stones Tour, which has clearly been one of her favorite endeavors so far. “When I get onstage, that’s it,” she says. “It’s the one moment I can have with the audience where I’m not thinking about anything else. That’s what I love. It’s the reason I do this and why I’ve made this my job, so I can sing live.” Now Lloyd is looking forward to making her mark in the music industry with her forthcoming second studio album, Sorry I’m Late. “The U.S. is a big deal,” she says. “It’s a bigger field for me to play in and I like that. I love a challenge. I will never reach that level where I can completely say, ‘Oh, I’ve done it. I’m a star.’ It’s never going to happen. There will always be something bigger and better that I want to achieve.” cherlloyd.com 360 MAGAZINE 111 Night Moves Photographer: Nelson Blanton for Stylehouse Productions Inc.
