WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY - WHAT IS IT?
T
his is the fourth year that McDonald’s
Restaurants around the world have celebrated World Children’s Day in the middle of November in a show of support for
children in more than 100 countries. The McDonald’s family has raised more than $50 million to
benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC)
and other children’s causes over the past three years.
An annual global
Here in Hawaii, the more than $40,000 raised last year went to
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii, whose primary focus is operating Hawaii’s Ronald McDonald House (RMH), and the Ronald McDonald
House Family Room at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
This year’s World Children’s Day celebration again spans three days, from Friday
November 18, through Sunday November 20. Again, McDonald’s restaurants all over the
world, including Hawaii, will be donating a portion of the money raised from select menu
items (see page 2) for the good of the children.
In addition, all McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. will be offering “helping hands” for
$1 as part of the “Give A Hand” program with proceeds also benefiting RMHC. For each
$1 donated, customers get a “Hand” that they write their name on and post at a designated area within the store where they are purchased. To donate on-line, go to
www.rmhc.org/giveahand.

whose children are receiving primarily
outpatient treatments for their serious illnesses. We will also have a beautiful second location dedicated to families of
inpatient children. Of course, the RMH
Family Room at Kapiolani Medical Center
for Women and Children will continue to
offer respite and support services for all
families of children being treated there.
This is the third year in a row that the
Honolulu Star-Bulletin has offered to print
this special World Children’s Day insert
section. It is incredibly generous of them
to allow us the opportunity to tell the
RMHC story to such a wide audience. But
their generosity doesn’t stop there. They
have encouraged regular advertisers to
participate in this project and are donating all of the net proceeds from the ads to
RMHC. That’s pretty incredible, and I urge
everyone to remember and support the
Star-Bulletin and the businesses and organizations whose advertisements appear in
this section. WCD’05

Two years ago, then fouryear-old Bucky Ludgate was
featured on the cover of this
tabloid with his mother Nicole.
In last year’s insert we revealed
that when Bucky had finished
his cancer treatments, he and
his mother were separated—
Bucky going home to American
Samoa and his mom being
shipped out to Iraq
with her army reserve unit.
This year we can share some
great news! Nicole has written
to us that she has completed
her active duty and is reunited with Bucky back home.
Here’s what Nicole shared
about Bucky in her letter:
“Bucky is doing wonderful! He
turned the BIG 6 this past July
and is starting Level K this
year. He just loves being
around all the kids in his class,
and he calls them ‘his students.’ He’s slowly regaining
his strength and his coordination skills are coming back as

ose Ann and Roger
Mamuad of Waianae visit the
RMH Family Room
every day. Their 21-monthold daughter Franchesca is
somewhere in the middle of
inpatient treatment that
may last six months and
they want to be with Franchesca, their only child, as
much as they possibly can.
“We hope she can be at
home at least by Christmas,” said Rose Ann, as dad
helped the precocious patient move around the Family Room despite her being
hooked up to a portable intravenous rack.
It’s certainly not easy for
someone in the Mamuad’s
situation. Being at the hospital every day keeps them an
hour’s drive from home,
family and friends. Rose Ann
is juggling her night classes
and Roger, his job as an
alignment technician at Lex
Brodie’s in Waipahu.
For the Mamuads, the
RMH Family Room has been
a blessing. “Our daughter
has lived over half her life in
the hospital,” said Rose Ann.
“So she really loves coming
here to this room with us because it’s very different from
the hospital surrounding it.
R
It reminds her of home.”
“She asks to come to the
Family Room,” added Roger.
“She eats better when we
feed her here, she loves to
crawl around on the carpet
and play with the toys.”
Another important way
Rose Ann and Roger say
they utilize the Family Room
is to use the computer and
Internet connection to stay
in touch with friends and
family via e-mails. “Also, this
is a great place to get together with other family
members who come to visit
Franchesca,” Roger said.
“And when Franchesca is
taking a nap, Rose Ann and I
can take a break together
here and have a soda and a
snack.”
“Not in the noisy cafeteria
but here in this calm, quiet
place,” said Rose Ann, gesturing to the surroundings.
“If we want, we can watch a
DVD or spend time talking
with other parents who are
going through the same
thing we are.”
“We are really grateful for
the Family Room and we
deeply appreciate the helpful, supportive volunteers
who each day show that
they really care.” WCD’05

Family Room find especially
valuable. “The computer and

the kids are amazing. They don’t
complain. Some don’t k now anything much other than being in
and out of the hospital, but
they’re just regular kids. They
want to play a game...they
want to go back to their room
and call their
friends…they argue
the same…they are
just being kids.”
Gail says volunteering at the
Family Room
makes her feel
embarrassed to
complain about
the little things
in her everyday life. “Giving back
makes
me realize how
much I
have
and
how
used,” she says. “Also just having the quiet and privacy and
place to get away for short periods of time are really important to the families. They say
it’s like a little apartment-kind
of cozy and homey.”
Even with Gail’s busy schedule, she still makes sure
that she works her

Gail is a busy lady and when
