DO YOU DREAM OF FANTASTIC SKIING IN A STUNNING
LANDSCAPE? OR HOW ABOUT RELAXING WHILE
SURROUNDED BY BREATHTAKING SCENERY?
Perhaps you’d also like to enjoy exciting-yet-budgetfriendly city breaks? Or how about thrilling surfing
and diving adventures? One of Fjord Norway’s great
strengths is its diversity and, whether you’re visiting
for a weekend or a month, you’ll find that there is
plenty to explore.
Welcome to Fjord Norway in winter.
2
Ski Fjord Norway
The western part of Norway is
called Fjord Norway – with good
reason. The many fjords are the
main features in a fantastic
landscape found nowhere else in
the world. The fjords in Fjord
Norway are easily accessible as
people have lived in small villages
and on farms along them for
centuries. The road network is well
developed and there are excellent
boat and ferry services. The fjords
of Norway have nonetheless
retained their natural beauty and
still feel untouched.
In winter the landscape is even
more dramatic, with snow-covered
mountains and frozen waterfalls.
From December through April, the
ski resorts offer excellent skiing at
all levels. You’ll find it’s all easily
accessible, with short transfers from
airports with international
connections. You will find everything
from children’s slopes to steep-anddeep freeskiing in less-crowded
resorts, offering a far different
experience than some of the more
well-known ski regions. The strict
laws against heli-skiing and
snowmobiles leaves the snow
untracked in the backcountry. In
Fjord Norway you will re-discover
silence.
In Fjord Norway we appreciate
explorers – visitors that value the
history and culture of the places
they visit. Exploring Fjord Norway
with a local guide is the best way
to experience this unique place. The
guides are experts in the activities
they provide, and have great
insight into the history, culture and
nature of Fjord Norway. Bringing a
guide will add value to your overall
experience and ensure a truly
memorable adventure.
Many would say winter is the best
season to explore the region. Prices
are budget-friendly, attractions are
less crowded and accommodation
is easy to find. There are many
attractions to choose from. Three
UNESCO World Heritage attractions
are located in Fjord Norway.
Bryggen, the Hanseatic Wharf in
Bergen, is an example of a building
tradition that dates back almost 900
years. Urnes stave church in Luster
is the oldest stave church in the
world. But nature will always be
the main attraction in our region.
The Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord
are considered the world’s finest
examples of the fjord landscape.
We have eight national parks to
explore, the biggest glaciers to be
found in Norway and endless fishing
opportunities along the coast in
winter.
Use our new product manual as a
planning tool and find the
adventure of your dreams. We hope
it will inspire you and encourage our
already valued guests

How to get to Fjord Norway
YOU ARE JUST A QUICK, COMFORTABLE JOURNEY AWAY
FROM SKI FJORD NORWAY’S GREAT WINTER RESORTS
TRONDHEIM

ÅLESUND
The airports that serve the Fjord
Norway region have direct flights
to more than 50 destinations
throughout Europe, including
London, Edinburgh, Newcastle,
Stockholm, Riga, Amsterdam,
Frankfurt, Paris and Copenhagen.
Remember that if you are flying
into Fjord Norway via Gardermoen Airport in Oslo, there are
a number of domestic links to
a number of smaller airports in
the region, including Kristiansund, Molde, Ålesund, Ørsta/
Volda, Sandane and Sogndal.
They are all great choices if you
want to experience some of the
very best winter destinations.
Of course, depending on where
you’re travelling from, other
transportation links could also
be possibilities; the region is
well served by train and boat
services, plus car rental is a very
easy way to get to your chosen
ski resort or city.

OSLO
BERGEN AIRPORT FLESLAND
This is the most centrally located city airport for the region’s
skiing facilities. Direct flights
to more than 40 international
destinations depart from here.
The nearest major skiing centres
are Voss Resort and Voss Fjellandsby, but you can also easily
reach Ski Sogn and Røldal from
Bergen. From Flesland you can
use the Ski Fjord Norway shuttle
bus, which takes you straight to
Voss Resort and Voss Fjellandsby in about 90 minutes. However,
probably the easiest way of getting around the region is by car.
All major car-rental companies
have offices at Flesland as well
as most of the other destination
airports in the region. Why not
try the ski-rental-car offers from
Avis at its rental stations in the
Ski Fjord Norway region? www.
fjordnorway.com/ski/ skicar. If
you prefer public transportation,
the airport bus departs every
15 minutes from Bergen Airport
Flesland to the city center.
From there you can choose to
continue your journey by bus,
train or express boat. Travelling
by train to Voss is fast and easy.
Departing every hour or so from
Bergen Central Station to Voss
Station, it only takes about an
hour before you arrive at one of
Norway’s top ski resorts.
If you prefer the smaller and
undiscovered resorts north of
Bergen, catch one of the several
express boats that depart from
the city’s harbour. Taking one of
these boats to Sogndal is a great
introduction to the magical fjord
landscape. Bergen is also the
starting point for the Hurtigruten
coastal express boat trip, which
departs for Kirkenes in the far
north every evening of the year.
HAUGESUND AIRPORT KARMØY
The airport lies between Bergen
and Stavanger and is the destination for many international
flights. Haugesund is perhaps
best known as the birthplace of
the Norwegian Vikings. Today
the city plays an important role
as a hub for offshore industries
in the North Sea. Haugesund
is the closest entrance point
to the renowned ski resort of
Røldal, said to have the deepest
snow in Europe. The airport is
also well situated for those who
want to hit the slopes in Sauda.
You can hop on a direct shuttle
bus which leaves the airport for
Røldal, only a two-hour trip.
Haugesund also has a regular
Flybuss service to the centre
which makes a number of stops,
or you may rent a car at the
airport.
ÅLESUND AIRPORT VIGRA
Fjord Norway is home to the
beautiful city of Ålesund and
its airport Vigra. It’s the perfect
place to fly into if you want to
experience the stunning scenery
at ‘close-to- the-fjord’ resorts
in the northern part of Ski Fjord
Norway.
There is an airport bus service
to the centre of Ålesund (which
takes about 20 minutes) and
also a coastal express boat with
daily departures from Trondheim
to Kristiansund. Of course, you
always have the option of hiring
a rental car.
STAVANGER AIRPORT SOLA
This is the natural destination
when you want to go skiing in
the southernmost resorts of
Sirdal and Sauda and, of course,
to spend time in the 2008 City of
Culture, Stavanger. The airport
bus service, the Flybuss, also
makes getting into the city easy,
especially for the first-time
visitor. Services are every 20
minutes to a number of stops
in Stavanger. There are also
several car rental companies located at the airport offering good
deals in the winter season.
Travel Tips!
The towns and cities in Fjord
Norway have many sports shops
that offer good deals on
a wide range of ski equipment,
or you may rent ski equipment at
the resorts. Just on Voss you will
find more than 5 sports shops,
offering the latest in alpine
equipment at very competitive
prices!

Ski Resorts in Fjord Norway
THEIR LOCATION IN THE FJORD
LANDSCAPE MAKES THE SKI
RESORTS IN FJORD NORWAY
UNIQUE. HERE BOTH FAMILIES AND
FREESKIERS CAN ENJOY SKIING
EXPERIENCES THAT ARE REALLY OUT
OF THE ORDINARY
Great skiing terrain and good
snow conditions are the most
important ingredients for a
fantastic skiing experience.
Compared with some places in
Central Europe the resorts are
small, but they have greater
altitude differences, which means
long downhill runs. The resorts
are friendly and it is easy to
find your way around, making
them particularly suitable for
families with children who
want a relaxing winter break.
The coastal climate of Western
Norway means heavy snowfalls
on a regular basis. Resorts such
as Voss Fjellandsby, Røldal and
Stranda are among the most
dependable in Europe for snow,
and the chances of powder are
good! If you come mid-week, you
will often have the slopes almost
to yourself. But a skiing holiday
in Fjord Norway has more than
unforgettable skiing to offer. The
resorts are only a short distance
from idyllic villages or towns
and a skiing holiday in Western
Norway can easily be combined
with a round trip, a fjord cruise
or a visit to one of the region’s
cities. Fjord Norway is home to
companies that offer activities
such as snowshoeing, sledging,
ice-climbing and ski & sail. There
are also great cross-country trails.
THE MOST
IMPORTANT SKIING AREAS
AT VOSS you will find two ski
resorts, VOSS RESORT AND VOSS
FJELLANDSBY, which are only a
20-minute drive from each
other. They are the biggest
and most easily accessible ski
centres in the region, with good
ski schools and long histories of
welcoming guests from abroad.
www.visitvoss.no
SKI SOGN consists of two
small ski centres and several
accommodation options. You can
have an exciting and different
skiing holiday here that also
includes activity tours in dramatic
scenery.

RØLDAL is known as the
freeskiers’ favourite, with snow in
abundance and exciting terrain.
www.roldal.com
THE ALPEPASS REGION consists
of the resorts of Stryn, Stranda,
Sunnmørsalpane, Stordal,
Ørskogfjellet, Ørsta, Volda and
Harpefossen. One ski pass gives
you access to all the ski resorts,
which offer both powder and
fantastic beginner slopes.

A WINTER WEEK IN
MYRKDALEN*
(Sunday - Sunday)
VOSS FJELLANDSBY IS SITUATED IN MYRKDALEN, ONE OF NORWAY’S MOST
SECURE AREAS FOR SNOW
It’s only a short 25 km drive from
the centre of Voss. This new resort
opened in 2003 and enables
Voss to offer a variety of skiing
experiences, from great beginners’
slopes to challenging terrain for the
most experienced skiers. The skiing
season is long in Myrkdalen. The
winter startsin November and lasts
until May.
In Myrkdalen, you will find 7
ski lifts and 13 slopes that are
suitable for the whole family.
The area is perfect forfamilies
with children and, if you choose
16
Ski Fjord Norway
to stay in the vicinity of the ski
centre, the distance to the ski lifts
is so short that you can strap on
your skis on your doorstep and
ski over to the lift. The resort has
its own children’s area with ski
lifts and, of course, offers both ski
rental and ski schools for every
level of proficiency. In addition to
the ski centres, there are lots of
possibilities for cross-country skiing
and ski touring in the immediate
area. The short distance to the
centre of Voss and to the fjords
means there is so much you can
do! In Voss, the whole family can
take a sleigh ride, go swimming
in a heated swimming pool or
organise a friendly bowling match.
Older children and adults can go
for guided walks or try abseiling.
A tandem paragliding trip or
sightseeing trip in a helicopter
gives you a unique bird’s eye view
of Voss. In the centre of Voss,
you can explore the Vangsgata
shopping street and the nearby
Amfi shopping centre, with its
shops, cafés and restaurants.

odation in

The ski resort is surrounded
by Sunnmørsalpene’s arsenal
of craggy peaks and the view
towards the fjord is exceptional.
The combination of plenty of
snow and magnificent options
for powder skiing, makes
Strandafjellet a great place for
skiing tourists and off-piste
enthusiasts. This is often cited
as the best place in Scandinavia
for off-piste skiing. At Mount
Roaldshorn, Scandinavia’s
biggest express lift was installed
last year, along with a new
panorama restaurant.
The skiing center has eight lifts,
a rolling hoop, a children’s area,
a terrain park and 18 downhill
runs of varying degrees of
difficulty – from family pists to
professional FIS grade pists.
Cross-country skiers are sure
to love the 15 km of prepared
skiing tracks, as well as
the fantastic terrain routes.
Sunnmørsalpene are one of the
most spectacular and beautiful
areas in Norway for skiing from
peak to fjord, with stunning
views above the UNESCO fjord
landscape. You can reach
Strandafjellet in only 60 minutes
by car from Ålesund and in
around 80 minutes from Ålesund
Airport Vigra.

Folgefonn
Summer Ski
The ski resort is located about 19
kilometres from the village of Jondal
on the Folgefonna Glacier, the third
biggest glacier in Norway.
For years, this centre has given skiing
enthusiastsan opportunity to ski
during the summer months.
It is a fantastic feeling to race down
the snow-covered tracks in the
middle of July – in the scorching
sun with the thermometer reading
20 degrees. There is a tarmac road
all the way to the centre and good
parking facilities.
You can hire skis, a snowboard or
a sledge for fun on the glacier. The
resort is usually open from May to
September and the trip from Bergen
takes two hours. There are several
accommodation options available
in the charming village of Jondal,
situated by the fjord. It is easy to get
to the ski centre by shuttle bus, and
you can enjoy the long, light summer
evenings down by the fjord.
Why not take a guided glacier
walk? Walks start from Folgefonn
Sommarskisenter. The face of the
glacier is made up of both gentle, flat
areas of ice and more challenging
areas with crevasses. Guided glacier
walks are run daily and they are
adapted to the participants’ wishes
and fitness levels.

What is Ski Touring?
The Guide
Sverre Hjelmeland is a man who
really knows mountains. At 29 years
old, he’s been guiding people in
some of Norway’s most stunning
terrain since he was just 15. He’s
passionate about the places he gets
to work and is keen that others get
to experience the thrill of being in
such an environment as safely as
possible. And, as an IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain
Guides Associations) mountain
guide, that’s exactly what he ensures. He is also one of the owners
of Norgesguidene, a company that
specialises in ski, alpine, rock and
ice climbing experiences in Fjord
Norway and beyond.
Ski Fjord Norway talked to Sverre
to find out exactly what makes ski
touring so special. He said: “I think
it’s the whole experience of being
out there. Ski touring is not about
the ‘perfect’ track down, it’s about
the whole day. You have a full day,
the walk up the mountain, you eat
on the way up and talk together.
Then there are the birds and the
animals you get up there, the different types of snow. And then you ski
back down home again. It’s not like
a normal ski resort with small runs.
You’re virtually alone the whole day.
“When you’ve had those days
when everything’s come together, the weather, the snow, the
mountain with the fjord blue-green
below, it’s perfect. You get the
alpine terrain, you get a lot of snow
and the scenery makes it very special. You get alpine views but also
see the ocean and the fjords. There
are not many places in the world
where you get so much good skiing
without a tree.”
match your skill level, no matter
what that is, from novice to accomplished skier.
He adds: “Most people are very
surprised. They can’t believe that
Norway looks like this. They discover
that this is something very different
to what they have done before.”
We are sure you’ll agree.
The good news for anyone who
wants to try ski touring is that the
region has some of the most accessible summits in Europe. Sverre says
that you can trust your guide to take
you to a mountain to
touring in Fjord Norway.
© SVERRE HJORNEVIK
The Skier
So, what is ski touring like when you
don’t spend your average working
day up in the mountains like certified
mountain guide Sverre Hjelmeland
does?
Ski Fjord Norway caught up with Stefan Herz, 44, who lives in London, to
find out about his experience of ski
40
Ski Fjord Norway
Stefan spent time in the Sunnmøre
Alps in March 2010 after flying into
Ålesund. He’s quite the accomplished
skier and has skied in many places,
particularly in the Alps. But he still
found that Norway had the sort of
stunning scenery that makes a lasting impression. He says: “We were
there for five days, doing various ski
tours around the area. The mountains I was hugely impressed by,
I didn’t expect them to be quite as
alpine as they were. That actually
exceeded my expectations.”
And what of the solitude that one
hears about on these ski tours? Did
Stefan experience any of that blissful
quiet, of being alone with nature? Oh
yes! He says: “I loved the fact that
we didn’t see anyone else at all. On
the days that we went ski touring,
we were the only people. That was
great. As was the fact that you could
walk straight from the road and begin to gain altitude, no long walks in.
That was absolutely brilliant.
And was Stefan impressed enough
that he would consider a return trip
to Fjord Norway? Well, that’s a big
‘yes’ again! He says: “I’m definitely
going to come back and explore a bit
more of it. The difference between
ski touring in the Sunnmøre Alps and
touring in somewhere like Chamonix
is that, in Chamonix, you’re probably touring with something like 50
people if it’s a nice day. In Norway,
you’ve got it to yourself.
“To be honest we had too much
snow!”
“It’s absolutely fantastic.”
Preparing for
Ski Touring in
Fjord Norway
Planning
Make sure you speak to a qualified tour operator and guide
before your trip. By doing this,
you can ensure that your holiday
is a fantastic skiing experience,
tailored to both your wishes
and skill level. There are an immense number of peaks, trips
and accommodation to experience in Fjord Norway, all with
unique features. With your guide
helping you, you can decide
together on the best trip for
your needs, start making your
itinerary and mentally prepare
for your adventure!
Skill level
Ski touring in Fjord Norway is not
only for
expert skiers. Beginners, for
instance, will be pleased to
learn that not all the peaks are
near-vertical. There are several
peaks in the region that have
perfect ski-touring qualities for
those who are less-experienced:
untouched snow with ski lifts nearby. A great way to ‘soften up
the trip’ is to use a ski lift to get
so far up, then continue to walk
up the mountain from there.
But, however you choose to do
it, ski touring always involves
walking uphill before you get
the thrill of going downhill. To
prepare for this, it is recommended to do a bit of training before
hand. The best method is hiking
over medium-to-long-distances,
either with or without skies.
Knowledge
For most people, ski touring will
be a new experience. To make
your trip as good as it can possibly be, you should ask your tour
operator and guide about the
area that you’re going to explore.
There are so many resources to
choose from including internet
pages and forums, maps, books,
etc. Knowing something about
the area you’re about to explore
will add another dimension to
the trip. Buy your own map,
bring it on the trip, use it and
then you can look at it again
when you’re back home. Maps
are not only useful tools, they
are one of the best souvenirs!
And, of course, they can be used
again to plan future trips.
Equipment
In Fjord Norway you can either
rent all the equipment you need
or, alternatively, bring your own.
Following is a list of ‘standard
equipment’ required for ski
touring:
• Alpine skis with walking mode
– big skis in the winter and
smaller, more lightweight ones
inspring and summer.
• Good lightweight boots with
walking mode –look for Dynafit
binding compatibility.
• Skins for the skis and adjustable poles.
• A small backpack (30L) with
avalanche beacon, shovel and
search probe.
• Good warm clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen and, of course, a
camera.
As most gear can be rented, it’s
easy to travel
light in Fjord Norway. But we
strongly recommend that you
don’t rent boots – buy a
pair that fit your feet! The whole
trip depends on good, comfortable boots.

Surfing, fishing and bird life. The winter in Sunnmøre is inviting for many unique activities in addition to skiing.
There are excellent waves for winter surfing at Alnes on the island of Godøya, just offshore from Ålesund. The
fantastic Borgundfjord cod fishery, which takes place right alongside Ålesund, and the bird island of Runde, are
perhaps at their best and most exotic in the winter. These activities are perfect even on days when the weather
conditions are not at their best!

Fjord Norway
– a winter destination with lots to offer
Haugesund - Homeland
of the Viking Kings, Norway’s Birthplace
THE ‘GATEWAY TO THE FJORDS’ AS IT IS KNOWN, BERGEN IS NORWAY’S
SECOND LARGEST CITY, BUT YOU WOULDN’T KNOW IT; IT STILL HAS THE
EFFORTLESS CHARM OF A PICTURESQUE, SMALL TOWN.
TODAY, HAUGESUND IS KNOWN AS A THRIVING AND EXCITING COASTAL
TOWN. YET IN 1839 THERE WERE ONLY 12 FAMILIES LIVING ON THE SITE
WHERE THE TOWN LIES TODAY. NOW THERE ARE OVER 30,000 PEOPLE
WHO CALL HAUGESUND ‘HOME’.
It is perhaps most famous for its
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bryggen,
the unique, colourful collection of
wooden buildings rebuilt in 1702, that
line the harbour. Then there are the
seven mountains that surround the
city including Fløyen, with its famous
funicular railway. With great views over
the city and beyond, the five-minute
trip on the funicular to the station at the
top of Fløyen (320-meters above sea
level) is a must.
Despite retaining a small-town feel,
Bergen is still a shopper’s dream, with
big-name brands and sophisticated
boutiques in the malls and streets,
as well as interesting independent
retailers offering something just a
little bit different. There is also a
wealth of coffee-shops, bars, clubs and
restaurants to be found. No matter
what your taste or pocket, you’ll find
the city has much to offer in terms of
wining, dining and good times!
If you’re after a dose of culture, then
Bergen makes the perfect destination;
be transported back in time with a
visit to the home of the celebrated
composer Edvard Grieg, Troldhaugen.
His residence from 1885 to 1907, the
house, just a short car journey from the
city centre, has remained unchanged
since then. It attracts more than
The area that surrounds the town,
Haugalandet, is known for its wild,
natural beauty. Culture wise, Haugesund
is home to highly popular jazz and film
festivals, plus there is also Festiviteten,
which is very much the artistic centre
as it hosts both theatre productions and
concerts.
Meanwhile, if you fancy getting to grips
with something a little more energetic,
there are many outdoor sports and
activities for you to experience in the
area such as fishing, boating, extreme
sports and even following the Viking
trails of old.
Haugesund has so much history to offer,
especially when it comes to the Vikings.
If you want to experience something
of what life was like back then, then
a visit to the impressive Norvegen
History Centre at Avaldsnes is a must.
With artefacts, reconstructions, reenactments and video presentations, all
housed in the impressively constructed
museum, you will be transported back
to a time where life was unbelievably
hard but the Vikings endured, creating a
successful, highly structured society.
The location of the Nordvegen History
Centre is often referred to as the
‘birthplace’ of Norway. It was following
a battle here that in 870AD that Harald
the Fairhaired established Norway’s first

100,000 visitors annually.
Or why not admire the wide variety
of artworks on display at Bergen
Kunstmuseum (art museum)? With
everything from traditional landscapes
to portraits, from sculptures to
challenging pieces of modern art, the
museum, right in the centre of the
city, has a fascinating collection of both
Norwegian and international pieces.
There are also theatres and indoor
and outdoor concert venues attracting
some of the biggest names in the
entertainment world or, if you prefer,
you can seek out one of the many bars
that has live music on nightly for a
more intimate experience.
During the winter, there is a host of
cultural events and attractions including
concerts, theatre, both film and music
festivals and, as Christmas approaches,
the renowned ‘Pepperkakebyen’, a
magical, miniature gingerbread version
of Bergen which takes pride of place in
the city centre.
Bergen’s great location also means that
it is the starting point for the ‘Norway
in a Nutshell’ round-trip which runs
every day of the year, allowing you to
experience some of the very best fjord
scenery.

throne while the country’s name came
from the strait of Nordvegen.
But when you’ve had enough of the
historical side of things, you’ll find that
modern day Haugesund is a great
place to let your hair down, relax and
sample some of the best restaurants
and nightlife you could hope to find.
With its coastal setting, even taking a
simple coffee outside takes on a special
charm. Foodies will be delighted with
the choice that Haugesund has to offer,
especially when it comes to traditional
Norwegian dishes and fresh seafood,
often with a little international twist.
Meanwhile, shoppers will find
themselves well catered for with an
excellent choice of both high-street
favourites and small, independent
retailers. You won’t have to battle like a
Viking to get something you’ll treasure
forever!
With culture, scenery, great nightlife
and entertainment on offer, Haugesund
is the perfect place for the whole
family to explore, no matter what their
interests. There’s truly something for
everyone!

THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE IN 2008, THE REGION OF
STAVANGER IS A BEAUTIFUL AND EXCITING REGION KNOWN FOR ITS
FANTASTIC VIEWS OF THE FJORDS AND MOUNTAINS AND THE WHITE
SANDY BEACHES. A FJORD CRUISE TO LYSEFJORD IS A MUST! YOU’LL
ALSO FIND GREAT SHOPS, RESTAURANTS, BARS AND CLUBS, AS WELL
AS A WEALTH OF OTHER ATTRACTIONS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT YOUR
VISIT IS AN UNFORGETTABLE ONE.
A REAL ARCHITECTURAL GEM, ÅLESUND, WITH ITS STUNNING
BUILDINGS AND BEAUTIFUL LOCATION, HAS BEEN VOTED NORWAY’S
‘MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY’. WITH TOWERS, SPIRES AND JOYOUS COLOURS
DECORATING MANY OF ITS BUILDINGS, THIS WONDERFUL LOCATION IS
A MEMBER OF EUROPE’S ‘RÈSEAU ART NOUVEAU NETWORK’ THANKS
TO ITS DISTINCTIVE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE. ÅLESUND IS SITAUATED
ONLY ONE HOUR’S DRIVE FROM THE ALPEPASS SKI RESORTS AND THE
SUNNMØRE ALPS.
With numerous small, quaint streets,
Stavanger city centre has plenty of
charm with which to attract the visitor.
Combine this with a strong history,
plus all the very best amenities
that you would expect to find in a
modern city, and Stavanger is well
worth a visit. Cultural highlights
include Stavanger Domkirke (dome
church), next to the city park. After a
devastating fire in 1272, the church
was eventually finished some 25 years
later. Enjoy a visit to the Archeological
Museum, which takes visitors back
to the Stone Age with its impressive
collection of artifacts. One of the
highlights is a skeleton of a polar bear
that’s more than 10,000 years old.
As beautiful as it is, it is sometimes
difficult to believe that this splendour
comes from tragedy. Fire raged
through the centre of the city
in 1904, destroying most of the
homes. But, thanks to an incredible
rebuilding effort, the city had risen,
phoenix-like from the flames, by
1907. Despite being one of the most
beautiful cities in the world, there
is more than architecture to call the
traveller to its streets. With galleries,
museums, great shopping, cosy
cafes, sophisticated restaurants and
more, Ålesund has an abundance
of activities and attractions that will
help create a truly unforgettable
experience.
And, of course, in winter, the city
streets take on an even more
magical air when everything is
covered in crisp, white snow.
Imagine the views that await
you after climbing the 418 steps
up Mount Aksla, one of the most
The region also has a fantastic cultural
scene, with many exciting cultural
attractions on offer whether you
are interested in history, museums,
innovative architecture or colourful
festivals.
And when you’ve had enough of the
‘high-brow’, why not relax with a
well earned coffee at Sjokoladepiken
in Øvre Holmegate, Stavanger’s own
little Notting Hill, or even something
stronger, in one of the many cafes or
bars that are in the city? From homemade cakes and quick-and healthy
bites to full a la carte creations, foodies
will be spoilt for choice in Stavanger.

popular tourist attractions in the
region. Not only will you see this
amazing city from an entirely new
perspective, but you will also be
able to look at the Sunnmøre Alps
and the islands lying off the coast.
The area has man-made beauty and
natural wonders lying side by side, in
perfect harmony.
There are also lots of things to do
for the whole family, especially
children, thanks to attractions such
as Atlanterhavsparken Aquarium
(considered one of the best in
Europe) where you will watch with
amazement as a host of incredible
sea creatures swim before your very
eyes and, of course, feeding time is
always a must-see! A beautiful city,
lying amongst beautiful nature – let
Ålesund show you that, sometimes,
fairytales really do come to life.
