Momiji-Maki-e
Nama-Ha-Suri-Nuri is a technique in which leafs of plants
are painted with strongly pigmented urushi and pressed on
urushi lacquer ground to leave
the leaf‘s pattern.
Momiji-Maki-e-Nuri is one version where „Momiji“ Japanese
Maple leafs are used. The
remaining urushi is sprinkled
with various metal powders, in
this case gold, platinum and
copper. Some are left pure red
and orange urushi.
The Maki-e work is executed
on a black stone surface „KuroIshimeji“ but can be applied on
any kind and color of urushi
ground.

a perfect stage to apply this
technique

Tame-Momiji-Maki-e
Nama-Ha-Suri-Nuri is a technique in which leafs of plants

platinum and copper.
The whole work is then coated
with 15 layers of transparent
urushi. This transparent final
coat is called „tame“
The leaf pattern are shimmering through the honey color
Tame layer. Since urushi becomes more transparent with the
time, the pattern will appear
stronger.

I had to wait several months
until the lacquer has reached
a certain hardness close to
the hardness of the malachite
itself to grind the surface even
and to polish. It is a very time
consuming lacquer version.

Kujaku-Ishi-Nuri
Kujaku-Ishi = Peacock stone
(Malachite) Kujaku-Ishi-Nuri I
have eventually discovered on
a Japanese Sword scabbard
called „saya“. First I had to
crush some malachite pebbles and sieved the grains to
different sizes. It was then
sprinkled into wet black urushi
lacquer.
Many layers of black lacquer
have been applied over the
Tame-Usu-Nashiji
Tame-Usunashiji Large
„usu hirame“ gold flakes are
sprinkled into wet lacquer.
Tame refers to many layers of
transparent lacquer that is applied over the polished hirame
layer. With the time urushi gets
more transparent and so the
sparkling effect of the polished hirame flakes will become
more intensive.
This lacquer is applied on all
pen types.
