2016 DE Events
2016 Autocross

OVR will once again host two Driver Education events at
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The dates for 2016 are June
10-12 and October 14-16. The Fridays for both of these
events are for instructors and advanced drivers. To qualify
as an advanced driver you must have driven at least 10
DE’s and preferably have driven Mid-Ohio before.
Ohio Valley Region / Porsche Club of America will kick off
the 2016 autocross season with five events starting in April
and ending in September. Racing will be held at Forest
Fair Mall, the current location of Bass Pro Shops, near the
intersection of I-275 (exit 39) and Winton Road, north of
Cincinnati.
Mid-Ohio, a 2.4 mile road course with 15 turns, is a world
known course that has hosted numerous types of vehicles
over the years. This year they will be hosting Vintage
Motorcycles, Formula 4, Trans Am Series, Honda Indy 200
Series, NASCAR XFINITY and SCCA runoffs.
For those new to the sport, autocross is a fun and exciting way to drive your vehicle on a small track against the
clock plus we have instructors. Drivers will maneuver
around a cone lined course with sharp curves, slaloms,
straightaways and tight handling situations. All of this is
accomplished in a safe and controlled environment with
one driver on course at a time. Safety is the primary focus
at an autocross.
Unfortunately, the price for OVR to rent the facility has
gone up tremendously over the years. We raised our
prices last year and even though they will charge us
$4,000 more this year for each event we WILL NOT raise
our prices for 2016. However, if the rental price continues
to increase we will be forced to raise our rates for the 2017
season.
For those of you who have never tried a DE before it is
great fun and requires you to do nothing other than have
your car inspected prior to the event, and get numbers for
both sides of your car. OVR has loaner helmets for you.
We have a free pizza party Friday night where you will
meet your instructor. We have once again negotiated great
rates with the Quality Inn and Comfort Inn in Bellville, Ohio.
Our program has become so popular that all run groups
from novice to expert were sold out well before the event
dates in 2015. If you register prior to 30 days before the
events there is a $50 discount on the pricing. Have you
registered yet? We are more than 50% filled for June already. Go to clubregistration.net and register. Don’t be left
out! June is just aroung the corner. Last year, many folks
who delayed were unable to get into the event. See you at

Family Picnic
Donna Spells Wilson - Social Chair
I know many of you have heard the PCA slogan, “It’s not
just the cars, it’s the people.” On May 14, we’re going to
completely embrace that spirit with our Family Picnic. This
event is not just for OVR members, but also their extended
family and friends. Of course there’ll be plenty of car talk
and viewing, but we also are going to have other activities
for those of you who are not so inclined toward the tech
gab and car ogling. We’ll also have plenty of activities for
kids, so bring the young ones, too. The picnic will be held
at Owl Overlook Shelter in Winton Woods. The shelter has
areas for horseshoes, volleyball, a kids' play area and other activities. More details to follow in the coming months!

A 15 minute lunch break has been added to the schedule
and the entry fee has increased to $30 per driver for the
2016 season. Awards are given to fastest time in class,
most clean runs, best time in each run group and year end
champions plus year end prizes at the annual meeting.
Startup time on race day will be 9am, with registration,
tech inspections, track familiarity, morning briefing and
a scheduled 15 minute lunch break. There will be a new
course layout that proves to be more challenging and longer than our 2015 season course.
Autocross is an inexpensive way to gather like minded
people, push your driving limits, learn about safe handling
in your vehicle and have fun. The events are open to drivers with valid driver’s licenses, Porsche not required. We
are hoping for more participation from other car clubs in
the surrounding area so feel free to invite your friends. All
manufacturers are welcome! Last year we had some very
fast cars including: Miatas, Corvettes, Mercedes, Camaros, VWs, and Scions. If you’re interested in autocross

Taj Ma Garaj Social

On Saturday, April 9, OVR is co-hosting a social with the
Mid-Ohio Region at the Taj Ma Garaj in Dayton (300 S.
Perry St.) The event will begin with an optional tour starting
at 1 p.m. and arriving at the Garaj at 3 p.m. Members from
both regions will congregate at the Garaj from 3-6 p.m. for
a social event surrounded by the amazing Porsche collection of the late John Dixon. The event will also include
a tech quiz presented by Ron Carr, a past winner of the
Porsche Parade Tech Quiz. Light refreshments and drinks
will be available. Registration is currently open on clubregistration.net.
Street Survival

It’s 2016, and OVR is adding a new program to the calendar. This year we will be sponsoring a Street Survival
class for teenage drivers.
The Tire Rack Street Survival is a teen driving program
governed by the BMW CCA Foundation. Through the
volunteer efforts of members of the BMW Car Club of
America, the Sports Car Club of America, the MercedesBenz Club of America, the Porsche Club of America and
the Audi Club of North America as well as other automotive enthusiasts who serve as the personal coach with
each teen, over 100 schools will be held across the U.S.
this year.
The school's aim is to reduce deadly car crashes involving
teenagers by providing them a controlled setting where
they can gain invaluable experience in car control, all with
a knowledgeable coach always at their side helping them
to understand how important experience is over guessing
when the unexpected happens on the road. The volunteers
give of their time and talents to help our most valuable resource, young people, gain experience that will allow them
to make educated decisions when driving, rather than
guessing what to do and whether they, their passenger or
others sharing the road with them, will live or die.

We are looking for this to be a spectacular event! There
is a spot for anyone to volunteer and assist to make this a
success. We need volunteers for instructors, registration,
course set up, traffic control, course workers, set up &
tear down, and general staff. Each person will have lunch
provided and a logo shirt for the event.

The event includes classroom instruction and in car instruction. Some of the key points covered are:
• Primary emphasis of the school is a "hands-on" driving
experience in real-world situations.
• Driving is done in the student's own car to teach him/her
about its handling limits and how to control them.
• Qualified coaches are in the car with the student throughout the entire day.
• The course is wet down (in part) to allow the student to
experience "mistakes" at a very slow speed. In this class,
mistakes are learning experiences.
• Challenging driving courses are created in a controlled
area to allow the student to experience abnormal car
behavior and then teach him/her how to handle the new
situation.
• This is not a course for learning how to drive at high
speeds.
• Safety and car control are the objectives.
Our event will take place on May 7, 2016 at the Forest Fair
Mall (Cincinnati Mills Mall, 1047 Cincinnati Mills Drive,
Cincinnati, OH) from 9am-5pm. We will need volunteers
for set up/take-down, in-car coaching and support for the
event.

Katarina
Thomas Crihfield - DE and Safety Chair
You probably don’t know it, but the car you see pictured on
this page, owned by our editor and secretary, Josh Snyder, is named after the famous ice skater Katarina Witt for
three reasons. For starters, both are German. Second, as
a 10-year-old, Josh had a bit of a crush on Fraulein Witt as
she was winning her second Olympic gold medal in figure
skating in 1988. Finally, and most importantly, Katarina
the Porsche encountered more ice than an episode of Ice
Road Truckers as Josh and I drove her home from Colorado at the beginning of March two years ago and she
performed majestically.
Katarina is a concept brought to fruition by Josh. He had
a vision before the car was ever in his hands, and this car
has been an ever-changing machine over the past two
years. The first project involved replacing the suspension,
wheels and tires. The suspension is all 935-style RSR Bilstein coilovers with solid bushings and Tarrett sway bars.
The wheels are 17” Fuchs replicas wrapped in Nitto NT05s
(soon to be NT01s.) The second project was the interior.
Recaro race buckets replaced factory sport seats. New
Rennline aluminum floorboards and pedals make for nice
jewelry. The interior is topped off with RS style door panels
and a B&K harness bar.
The third project was quite possibly the largest change.
A 3.6 VarioRam transplant from a 993 made for some
huge horsepower gains and relieved the original tired 3.2.
The fourth and most recent project was the brakes. 996/
Boxster S brakes were added along with a 23mm master
cylinder to top off what I consider the best all-around 86’
911 a person could want.
The story of this car defines what this great club is about,
and more importantly, to me, it was a wonderful start to my
friendship with Josh. Those who know me know that if I’m
at a club event, I’m either working on a car or talking about
working on a car. It’s just who I am. Those who read my article in the May issue last year, know about the journey that
got the car home and the friendship that the car bonded.
Now, a mere two years after we returned
home with the car, I’m pleased to announce that (what I’m calling) “Phase
1” of Katarina is complete. More on that
later.
When Josh made the decision to sell the
2008 Cayman S that he barely owned
long enough to mold his own butt print
in the seat, I knew he was interested.
When he had purchased half the build
parts for the car before we ever flew out
to see it, I knew he was serious. Now
seeing his efforts and watching him
develop “wrenching” skills, I’m inspired.
Building great friendships is exactly what
this club has meant to so many. The cars
we love just help facilitate those friendships. I wonder if OVR founding member
Jerry Wolf would’ve known way back in
1961 that 55 years later this club was going to be a family to some.

Since Katarina was greatly inspired by Jack Olsen’s Black
Beauty RSR clone, I’m sure you can guess what the next
phase of this car is, and it’s not for the faint of heart. In my
10 years of wrenching on Porsches, I can tell you that this
car and with a certain 914-GT clone have been my favorite
cars that I’ve had the honor to work on. This car has given
me a lifelong friend and memories that I wouldn’t trade for
anything. The best part is there are more to be made.

Wine Tasting

The 2015 OVR PCA charity wine tasting will be on Friday,
May 6 at 6:30 pm! This event was at capacity last year
with more than 90 OVR wine tasters sampling 25 different
highly rated wines and enjoying hot hors d’oeuvres. This
year will be more of the same, but space is limited. Registration will open soon on clubregistration.net at $30 per
person.
We are returning to the fabulous venue, Indian Hill Historical Society's "Little Red Schoolhouse" located at 8100
Given Rd. (the intersection of Camargo Rd. and Given Rd.)
If you missed this event last year, mark your calendar and
be sure to join us on Friday, May 6. This is one of our few
charity fundraising events for the year and our annual wine
auction at the end of the evening provides an opportunity
to bring home the wines you like.
The historic Little Red Schoolhouse has a lot where you
can park with us and display your Porsche in the flattering evening light. The location offers a picturesque,
historic setting for this event. There will be a silent auction
with several unique items to support Parkinson's Wellness and Children's Tumor Foundation. There are sure to
be some special Porsches on display. The doors will be
open, weather permitting, and we hope to have a wonderful spring, indoor-outdoor evening enjoying fine wine and
socializing amidst fabulous Porsches.

Thanksgiving in Havana

I spent Thanksgiving week in Havana, Cuba and although I
didn’t see any Porsches during my time there I can say the
car culture is alive and thriving. If any of you caught the
series called Cuban Chrome on the Discovery channel this
fall you will understand what I’m talking about.
Cuba is still not open to Americans for tourist travel, but
there are ways to visit the country if you are so inclined.
Jill had visited Cuba 10 or so years ago on a cultural trip
with a women’s group that had the approval of our government. Trips like that are still available, but your time is
somewhat structured with prearranged visits to cultural
activities, such as the ballet, artist schools, grade schools,
etc. Not that I would mind that, but I would prefer a lot of
free time to wander around Havana to photograph all the
‘40s and ‘50s American cars still plying the streets.
My chance came when Jo Brenzo, who operates a photography studio in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, invited
me to join a small group of photographers on an inaugural photography trip to Havana. We have stayed in San
Miguel for part of the past six winters and I have taken a
couple of photography field trips with Jo to ruins of a large
hacienda outside of town so that was the reason for the
invitation.
The group consisted of eight photographers and those
who lived in San Miguel would be taking a bus to Mexico
City for the flight to Havana while those of us who lived
elsewhere would fly to Mexico City to meet up with the others. As luck would have it, Jill and I were offered a chance
to house sit for a friend in San Miguel for the month of
November which allowed me to join that part of the group
for the bus ride to Mexico City. We flew to Havana on
Monday, November 23rd and arrived there mid-afternoon.
Just to be on the safe side I asked the Cuban woman
working the immigration station not to stamp my Passport she smiled and said okay. It used to be that your passport
could be confiscated and you could be fined upon returning to the US if you travelled to Cuba without our government’s permission.
As soon as we exited the airport terminal I got my first look
at some of the old American cars that are used as taxis.
There are four types of taxis available in Havana. The old
American cars are called Taxi Particulares; Bici Taxis are
pedal cabs; Coco Taxis are three wheeled motor taxis,
so called for the round passenger area that resembles a
coconut; and finally the yellow and black State Taxis that
are more modern Chinese cars. I felt like my head was
on a swivel on the van ride from the airport to our hotel
in Havana Viejo or old Havana trying to look at all the old
cars along the way.
I spent the first two days going out with Greg, another
member of the group, who had hired a local photography
guide. Greg had found Yosel Vazquez’s name on Trip
Advisor where he was highly rated as a guide in Havana.
I shared the cost with Greg and was glad I did. Yosel is a
thirty-one year old college graduate who I mistook as an
American or Canadian when I first met him - his English is
that good. Yosel hired Taxi Particulares for us each day
to take us to parts of the city that most tourists don’t visit.
He also would talk to locals to ask permission for us to
take their photos. In case you’re wondering, the two Taxi
Particulares were a ’59 Pontiac and a ’56 Dodge.
It is amazing to see how the old American cars have been
jury-rigged to keep them running without the availability of
replacement parts. Most of the original engines have been

substituted with Russian, Chinese or Japanese diesels.
The ’59 Pontiac that we used had a Japanese Hino diesel
with its 5-speed transmission grafted into it and the driver
was using the column shifter to row through the five gears.
I have no idea how he knew which gear he was selecting,
but he managed it quite well. Obviously the interiors were
worn out a long time ago and the majority have been replaced with tucked, rolled and pleated vinyl interiors. If you
are long in the tooth like I am you will know what kind of interior I’m talking about. If not, then check out the photo of
the ’53 Buick convertible. It seems like most of the original
wheels are long gone too and have been replaced with an
odd assortment of aftermarket wheels. Regardless, it’s still
a thrill to see all these old American cars still being used
and providing their owners with a source of income.

The nicer looking cars and the convertibles in particular
are used as taxis for the tourists while the more decrepit
ones are local taxis. The owner of a sharp looking convertible can get anywhere from 30 to 50 CUCs for an
hour’s ride around Havana. The CUC is the convertible
currency that tourists use and it is based on the US dollar
so 1 CUC equals $1.
I saw lots of Chevrolets from ‘48s to ‘59s and the same
can be said for Fords from ‘48s to ‘57s. Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles and Buicks were in abundance too. Lesser numbers
of Pontiacs, Plymouths, Dodges, Desotos and Chryslers
were seen as were a smattering of Willys Jeeps, Kaisers,
and one Nash Ambassador, an
Edsel, and a Lark. The rarest car
I saw was a ’54 Buick Skylark
convertible. They were only built
in ’53 and ’54 and had many body
and trim parts specific to the Skylark. As far as older foreign cars
go I saw an MGA coupe, a Saab
96, a Mercedes, and a Traction
Avant Citroen.
There are lots of tourists visiting
Cuba with the majority of them
staying in Old Havana or at a
beach resort and they come from
Europe, Asia, Canada, and South
America. I didn’t run into any
other Americans, but I know some
go on the cultural trips I mentioned above or sneak in through
Canada or Mexico. If you are
thinking about going I’d try to go
now before the cruise ships and
hordes of Americans are turned

356 Club 40th Anniversary Celebration

The local Porsche 356 car club was loosely organized by
a small group of 356 faithful 40 years ago, and has been
gathering at local club member venues for the annual Bull
Session ever since. In 2001, the Drie Staaten Gruppe
was born and the club became an officially recognized
356 Registry affiliate. After missing a few years, the club
reenergized the Bull Session and Family Picnic at Sharon
Woods Park in 2008. The club has grown to over 75 members, most whom own Porsche 356s.
The Drei Staaten Gruppe will celebrate their 40th Anniversary with a two day casual and fun weekend on May
21 – 22, 2016. The long standing Bull Session and Family
Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 22. There will be a host
hotel available for those travelling from out of town.
The Bull Session will be held at the Lone Oak Pavilion in
Sharon Woods Park. This is a free event but we will ask
for an RSVP, to be published in March, to ensure we have
enough food and drinks for lunch. We will have our own
private shelter and a large parking area for your car. Lunch
will be served around noon. Activities will include a swap
meet for all Porsche related goodies, a People’s Choice
competition for some really neat Porsche AG Club Trophies, and our always challenging Porsche Trivia Quiz. In
The Mart
addition, we will be inviting owners of some very historic
Porsches to display their cars at our Bull Session. We
already have a commitment for a Porsche 904.
On Saturday May 21, we will be offering a series of day
trips within easy driving distance to fun places to visit in
and around Cincinnati. Saturday evening will be capped
off with a B&B Riverboat dinner cruise. Departure time and
per person costs will be posted soon.
The Saturday offerings will be a choice of driving to the
Kentucky Bourbon Trail or the United States Air Force
Museum in Dayton. Other options for in town self guided
tours will be to visit the American Sign Museum, Queen
City Underground or Cincinnati Breweries.

Executive Board Reports
President: Grant Karnes said that he would be attending the Zone 4 President’s Meeting, and he asked for any
specific questions from any of the chairs.
Vice-President: No report.
Treasurer: Herb Beck reported that money came into the
club for badges, the chili party, the quarterly membership
rebate from National and an advertisement for Foreign
Exchange. He paid the deposit for the Little Red Schoolhouse for the Wine Tasting in May.
Committee Reports
Autocross: Bill Kief reported that the autocross committee
will set up the course for this year on April 16, a week before the first event. They want to get 40 cars per event and
they’ve talked to the BMW and the Mazda club for more attendees. This year, if there are five or more cars for a given
marquee, they will get their own run group. Jeff Renner
said they need coaches for the Street Survival event and
they will set up clubregistration.net for volunteers.
Chief Instructor: Dale Timmester said they have a couple
new contacts that haven’t instructed for us before, so he is
in the process of vetting those contacts.
Concours: John Meyer is working with Jeff Clark to put
together an event that will include a tour ending at a park
for a picnic and concours.
DE: Thomas Crihfield announced that he will share duties for the June DE with Dennis and then he will run the
October event on his own. He also said that we will allow
SA2005 helmets for the June event because of the shortage of SA2015 helmets on the market. Dale added that our
members should check with other clubs if they are attending DE events to see what their rules are. Jerry Wolf suggested that we could allow people to use loaner helmets
for other events if needed.
Historian: No report.
Membership: Brent Fagan announced that OVR has 808
primary members, 518 affiliate members for a total of 1326
members.
Merchandise: No report.

Newsletter: Josh Snyder reported that we have a new advertiser and that standing articles will run again in April.
Past President: No report.
Rally/Tour: Jeff Clark said that the $10 fee for the Taj Ma
Garaj includes the tour. He will make a separate clubregistration.net event for the tour and send out an e-blast with
information. Karah-Lyn Crihfield will update the website.
Safety: Thomas Crihfield is looking for someone to organize safety for the June event. He also thanked Tony
Watkins for his work with safety with the autocross events
last year.
Social: Donna Spells Wilson announced that she will be
stepping down as the social chair because of her obligations with a charity. Randy Wilson will be taking over for
her.
Technical: Rich Rosenberg reported that he has a tentative date for a tech session with Koni for April 30. They are
located near the airport and the event will probably be in
the late morning.
Website: No report.
New Business: Ed Busam has been working on getting
window cling decals that go inside the window. All members present voted to spend up to $800 to get new decals
with the OVR logo. We will also be receiving special PCA
decals for our 55th anniversary this year.
Brent Fagan announced three events hosted by other
organizations. The Porsche swap meet in Hershey, PA will
be on April 16. The Drei Staaten Gruppe Bull Session will
be in Cincinnati on May 21-22. The Put-In-Bay road races
are August 28-31.
Thomas said that he talked with Brad Kettler while in Daytona. Our club can come and visit his Audi North America
race shop in College Corner, IN. Thomas will follow up with
more details.
Social Media Chair

OVR is looking for a new chairperson to manage social
media. Newsletters and websites are no longer the only
way to engage with our membership. There are new and
interesting ways to communicate and share through social
media in real time through mobile devices. The new chair
is expected to update a club account for social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, engaging
our membership in dynamic ways. If you're interested in

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,
With the arrival of spring it’s time to
take off the car covers and unplug the
trickle chargers. During the last month
of winter, a few Zone 4 regions held their
Banquets and Galas. I was able to attend Motor-Stadt region’s banquet at the
Spartan Hall of Fame Café. The well attended fun-filled evening included a raffle
of items from a number of region sponsors and everyone went home with a prize. That same
evening was Western Michigan region’s Winterfest 2016.
The region held an auction to raise money for one of their
many charities. The next day I attended their Morning
After Brunch.
Since October, we’ve had numerous meetings with
Porsche as well as the organizers of the Detroit Grand
Prix regarding a car corral at Belle Isle. After a great deal
of hard work and some lobbying, I am pleased to announce that there will again be a Porscheplatz hosted by
Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) and the Porsche
Club of America (PCA) when the Chevrolet Detroit Belle
Isle Grand Prix returns to the Motor City June 3-June 5,
2016. The weekend will include the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (WTSC) featuring the P, PC, and GTD
classes of the IMSA WeatherTech Series. It will also feature the cars of the Verizon Indy Car Series and the trucks
of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks presented
by TRAXXAS.
The Porscheplatz includes an exclusive “Porsches Only”
Car Corral which allows Porsches to park on Belle Isle.
And remember this is the only parking available on the
island. PCA members and Porsche owners have been
selected by the Detroit Grand Prix to take part in this parking opportunity but there are limited spaces so purchase
your tickets early. You must have a PCA Car Corral ticket
and be driving a Porsche vehicle to park on Belle Isle (club
membership is not required).
Your single or multi day ticket includes premium Car Corral
parking on Belle Isle (This is the only way to park on the
island), a hospitality tent, video feed of the races, complimentary beverages, reserved seating in Grandstand 2 and
easy access to the pits and concessions. Another highlight of our Porscheplatz is presentations by race teams,
drivers and sponsors such as Michelin and Mobil 1. We’ll
have some giveaways as well.
I have made special arrangements for 2 promotions in
coordination with this event. The first 30 people to purchase multi-day tickets will receive a FREE Corral Pass for
Friday. In addition, I am currently in the process of organizing a Michigan State Police escorted motorcade from
The Henry Autograph Hotel on to Belle Isle concluding at
the Porsche Car Corral. This is a very unique opportunity
for us, but will only occur if there is enough interest and
participation.
For the convenience of our out of town guests, a room
block has been set up at The Henry Autograph Hotel in
Dearborn for June 2 – June 5, 2016 at a significantly reduced rate of $130 per night. For reservations call 1-888709-8081 and mention the Porsche Club of America Room
Block.
Tickets are on sale now for the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle
Grand Prix. To purchase tickets, go to http://detroitgp.com/
tickets/. Click on the Car Corral tab. You can view information on ticket plans and purchase tickets. Tickets may also

Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix office in the GM
