Newsletters and websites are no longer the only way to engage with our membership. There are new and interesting ways to communicate and share through social media in real time through mobile devices. The new chair is expected to update a club account for social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, engaging our membership in dynamic ways. If you're interested in this position please contact Josh Snyder at joshsnyder@ gmail.com and/or Grant Karnes at [email protected]. 1 Rallye Porsche Mariemont 11 Monthly Social/Board of Directors Meeting 14-16 Mid-Ohio Driver's Education Check our website, http://www.ovrpca.org for updates on all events. The dates for 2016 are June 10-12 and October 14-16. The Fridays for both of these events are for instructors and advanced drivers. To qualify as an advanced driver you must have driven at least 10 DE’s and preferably have driven Mid-Ohio before. Ohio Valley Region / Porsche Club of America will kick off the 2016 autocross season with five events starting in April and ending in September. Racing will be held at Forest Fair Mall, the current location of Bass Pro Shops, near the intersection of I-275 (exit 39) and Winton Road, north of Cincinnati. Mid-Ohio, a 2.4 mile road course with 15 turns, is a world known course that has hosted numerous types of vehicles over the years. This year they will be hosting Vintage Motorcycles, Formula 4, Trans Am Series, Honda Indy 200 Series, NASCAR XFINITY and SCCA runoffs. For those new to the sport, autocross is a fun and exciting way to drive your vehicle on a small track against the clock plus we have instructors. Drivers will maneuver around a cone lined course with sharp curves, slaloms, straightaways and tight handling situations. All of this is accomplished in a safe and controlled environment with one driver on course at a time. Safety is the primary focus at an autocross. Unfortunately, the price for OVR to rent the facility has gone up tremendously over the years. We raised our prices last year and even though they will charge us $4,000 more this year for each event we WILL NOT raise our prices for 2016. However, if the rental price continues to increase we will be forced to raise our rates for the 2017 season. For those of you who have never tried a DE before it is great fun and requires you to do nothing other than have your car inspected prior to the event, and get numbers for both sides of your car. OVR has loaner helmets for you. We have a free pizza party Friday night where you will meet your instructor. We have once again negotiated great rates with the Quality Inn and Comfort Inn in Bellville, Ohio. There are a few changes to the 2016 season. A 15 minute lunch break has been added to the schedule and the entry fee has increased to $30 per driver. Awards are given to fastest time in class, most clean runs, best time in each run group and year end champions plus year end prizes at the annual meeting. Startup time on race day will be 9am, with registration, tech inspections, track familiarity, morning briefing and a scheduled 15 minute lunch break. There will be a new course layout that proves to be more challenging and longer than our 2015 season course. Our program has become so popular that all run groups from novice to expert were sold out well before the event dates in 2015. If you register prior to 30 days before the events there is a $50 discount on the pricing. We urge you to sign up as soon as possible to reserve your spot for June! Clubregistration.net is already setup for the June event for registration, which opens on January 1. Don’t be left out! Last year, many folks who delayed were unable to get into the event. See you at wonderful Mid-Ohio. Autocross is an inexpensive way to gather like minded people, push your driving limits, learn about safe handling in your vehicle and have fun. The events are open to drivers with valid driver’s licenses, Porsche not required. We are hoping for more participation from other car clubs in the surrounding area so feel free to invite your friends. All manufacturers are welcome! Last year we had some very fast cars including: Miatas, Corvettes, Mercedes, Camaros, VWs, and Scions. Family Picnic Be on the lookout for more articles about Autocross in upcoming issues of The Bent Pylon. If you’re interested in autocross and have questions, please contact Bill Kief at [email protected]. Donna Spells Wilson - Social Chair I know many of you have heard the PCA slogan, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” On May 14, we’re going to completely embrace that spirit with our Family Picnic. This event is not just for OVR members, but also their extended family and friends. Of course there’ll be plenty of car talk and viewing, but we also are going to have other activities for those of you that are not so inclined toward the tech gab and car ogling. We’ll also have plenty of activities for kids, so bring the young ones, too. The picnic will be held at Owl Overlook Shelter in Winton Woods. The shelter has areas for horseshoes, volleyball, a kids' play area and other activities. More details to follow in the coming months! 4 Chili Party Pictures Ted Hunter - OVR Member Taj Ma Garaj Social Josh Snyder - Editor On Saturday, April 9, OVR is co-hosting a social with the Mid-Ohio Region at the Taj Ma Garaj in Dayton (300 S. Perry St.) The event will begin with an optional tour starting at 1 p.m. and arriving at the Garaj at 3 p.m. Members from both regions will congregate at the Garaj from 3-6 p.m. for a social event surrounded by the amazing Porsche collection of the late John Dixon. The event will also include a tech quiz presented by Ron Carr, a past winner of the Porsche Parade Tech Quiz. Light refreshments and drinks will be available. Registration is currently open on clubregistration.net. In 2001, the Drie Staaten Gruppe was born and the club became an officially recognized 356 Registry affiliate. After missing a few years, the club reenergized the Bull Session and Family Picnic at Sharon Woods Park in 2008. The club has grown to over 75 members, most who own Porsche 356s. The Drei Staaten Gruppe will celebrate their 40th Anniversary with a two day casual and fun weekend on May 21 – 22, 2016. The long standing Bull Session and Family Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 22. There will be a host hotel available for those travelling from out of town. The Bull Session will be held at the Lone Oak Pavilion in Sharon Woods Park. This is a free event but we will ask for an RSVP, to be published in March, to ensure we have enough food and drinks for lunch. We will have our own private shelter and a large parking area for your car. Lunch will be served around noon. Activities will include a swap meet for all Porsche related goodies, a People’s Choice competition for some really neat Porsche AG Club Trophies, and our always challenging Porsche Trivia Quiz. In addition, we will be inviting owners of some very historic Porsches to display their cars at our Bull Session. We The Mart already have a commitment for a Porsche 904. On Saturday May 21, we will be offering a series of day trips within easy driving distance to fun places to visit in and around Cincinnati. Saturday evening will be capped off with a B&B Riverboat dinner cruise. Departure time and per person costs will be posted soon. The Saturday offerings will be a choice of: Drive to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Drive to the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton Other info for in town self guided tours will be to: Visit to the American Sign Musuem Queen City Underground Tour Cincinnati Brewery history Tours Visit our website at www.dreistaatengruppe.com for more info as the organizing committee puts the finishing touches on the 40th Anniversary weekend plan. All Porsche enthusiasts are welcome to join in the fun and games for the weekend. We would like to see your 911s, 914s, and all other Porsche models in addition to our 356s at the Bull Session. Grant made a motion to accept the bylaws that were emailed to all board members in late 2015. Mike Valentine accepted the motion and Jerry Wolf seconded the motion. All board members present voted to approve the bylaws. Grant also previously asked for nominations for charities for 2016. Bill Kief nominated One Way Farm. Dennis Okin nominated Children’s Tumor Foundation and Ohio Valley Voices. Jeff Clark nominated the Arthritis Foundation. Thomas Crihfield nominated Parkinson’s Wellness. The members present voted to support Children’s Tumor Foundation and Parkinson’s Wellness in 2016. Finally, Grant announced the Taj Ma Garaj joint social with MORPCA to be held on Saturday April 9. The event will include a tour, a social and a tech quiz with questions determined by Ron Carr. Registration is currently open on clubregistration.net. Committee Reports Advertising: Grant Karnes announced that Toni Lichvar resigned as the advertising chair. The position will be dissolved because there is less need for one now with the ease of advertising paying through the website. Autocross: Bill Kief announced that four autocross events are on the calendar and that he has a full crew of volunteers. Autocross will once again be at Forest Fair Village, but the price will increase to $30 per person. He will fill out the observer and event report this year. The same committee will also host a TireRack.com Street Survival event. Chief Instructor: Jerry Wolf said that SCCA was still going to allow 2005 helmets this year. Thomas Crihfield said that he would follow up with National to see if the older helmets are still ok for DEs. Club Race: Grant said that Putnam gave away our date to MORPCA for a DE this year, so we will probably not host a club race. Concours: John Meyer is planning an event for Saturday June 25. He plans to charge $10 per person and ask the 10 club for $1000 to buy food and drinks. He wants to plan a tour that will end with a picnic and concours with food provided. This year the club will also be doing the Porsche VW Reunion and RPM concours. Tony Watkins suggested handing out schedules at events to help get people involved in other events. DE: Dennis Okin reported that 13 people have already signed up for the June DE. The club will be buying 18-20 new helmets. Thomas Crihfield is the new DE chair for this year at the June event. Historian: John Meyer passed around pictures from MidOhio in 1983. Members at Large: Mike Valentine pointed out his chartreuse green IROC car (that looked yellow) in the pictures and said that he is getting the same color GT3RS (green, not yellow.) Membership: No report. Merchandise: Grant said that the online store is getting a few orders, and that Dennis can use some of the items as door prizes at the chili party. Newsletter: Josh Snyder said that the February issue would be small and he requested a portrait picture for the cover. Past President: John Meyer said that the annual meeting went well and there were some leftover drinks for the chili party. Rally/Tour: Jeff Clark he is planning a tour on Sept 17. Safety: Thomas reported that he would keep the chair position for another year. He will get a committee organized to do tech at the DEs. However, he still needs some volunteers to help organize. He plans to do shifts, stickers and lots of volunteers again. Social: Donna Spells Wilson reported that she submitted a budget to Herb Beck for the family picnic event in May in Winton Woods. She asked for money for a bounce house and basketball inflatable for kids. She said that tablecloths, meat and chips would be provided. Members will be permitted to bring their own alcohol. She needs committees in three areas: food and beverage, games and prizes, and setup and cleanup. Technical: Rich Rosenberg has a contact out for a tech session with Bilstein. Website: No report. New Business: Grant asked for ideas about how to engage new members. He proposed emailing members for less than two years to offer some free events to them. Jerry suggested offering a free event to any member who hasn’t been to an event. Around the Zone Michael Soriano - Zone 4 Representative, Photo by Gary Chisolm Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members, As we enter the second month of the New Year, I am pleased to see that many regions are making a real effort to encourage their membership to remain connected throughout the winter months. A number of regions are holding events to welcome new members or introduce their newly elected officers. A few regions hold their formal banquets now as opposed to the end of the year which is always so busy; while others have held fundraising events to help benefit their communities. This time of year many regions hold tech sessions which are designed to help us better prepare for the upcoming driving season. Most of the regions have held their Planning Meetings to help establish a preliminary calendar of events for the year. Amongst the events already planned are numerous DEs. Zone 4 regions host Driver’s Education events from April through October. These events are designed to provide a safe, structured, and controlled teaching and learning environment so that participants can improve their driving abilities and acquire a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and driving safety. They take place at a number of tracks including Gingerman, Grattan, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, MidOhio, Pitt Race, Putnam Park, Waterford Hills and Watkins Glen; so why not consider attending one this year. As I look at all of the Zone 4 regions’ calendars, I am pleased to see that many regions are working together to create new events as well as helping to promote each other’s events. Over the past few years, I have attended some spectacular events throughout the zone providing me the opportunity to meet truly remarkable individuals. I highly recommend that you regularly visit the Zone 4 website, and check out the events page which contains a calendar of some of the many events taking place throughout the zone.
