iving a donation to the silent
auction at the Best of the Best Gala
on Monday, August 20, 5:30 to 8:00
p.m. or bidding on an item in the silent
auction raises funds to support local
scholarships for students at the University
of Maine Hutchinson Center. In 2012
over $7,000 was raised and given as
scholarships to local students.
But more than money goes along
with those scholarships. Someone who
couldn’t imagine being able to go to
college due to the cost, now takes a
giant step towards fulfilling their dream
of a college education.
Getting a scholarship is a pat on
the back, a vote of confidence, an
amazing and encouraging message
that someone believes in you and your
ability to succeed.
A scholarship expands horizons,
changes lives forever and makes
learning a new skill or pursuing a career
possible.
The college education that
scholarships provide improves the life
of not only the recipient but also the
lives of their family members, present
and future, by increasing their potential
income and significantly decreasing the
chance that they will be laid off from a
job.
For those who have so generously
given items for the silent auction and for
those who have bid on silent auction
items, we gratefully acknowledge your

UMAINE HUTCHINSON CENTER scholarship opportunities
T
he University of Maine Hutchinson Center and
several donors offer a number of scholarship
opportunities to Hutchinson Center students.
Scholarship awards will depend on the amount
of money available and the number of qualified
recipients. The scholarships are need-based. We
sincerely thank our benefactors who truly believe
in education and in providing scholarships to
those who might otherwise not be able to take a
college course or continue pursuing their degree.
q Shirley and Ronald Jarvella
The Jarvellas know the struggles families have
balancing the many facets of their lives. Ron
and Shirley have chosen their scholarship to
benefit those who are raising their family alone,
yet know the value and importance of a college
education. Single head of household (single
mom or dad with children), part-time student,
taking three credits or more UMaine Orono,
course at the Hutchinson Center.
q Best of the Best Scholarship
Established in 2007, the Best of the Best
Scholarship was created by VillageSoup but is
funded through community giving. The Best of
the Best Scholarship is awarded to deserving
Waldo County residents. In four years, scholarship
fundraising has garnered more than $32,000.
q Fred Hutchinson
Fred Hutchinson grew up in Atkinson and served
as the president of the University of Maine from
1992-1997. He credited his education at the
University of Maine with making the difference in
his life and chose to offer this scholarship to pass
the opportunity on to those who follow him. First
time taking a University of Maine, Orono, creditbearing undergraduate course at the Hutchinson
Center.
q United Mid-Coast Charities Annual Fund
The purpose of the Fund is to assist Maine
residents in need as they pursue their college
education through the University of Maine
Hutchinson Center. This is for a UMaine, Orono,
undergraduate or graduate course offered in
Belfast at the Hutchinson Center.
q Pete and Ann Bixler
Pete and Ann Bixler have lived on the Maine
coast for 40 years. Holding doctor of science
and master of arts degrees respectively,
they have experienced the benefits strong
educations bring. They have also seen the
negative effects of a weak education, especially
for working people in the Midcoast area. Their
scholarship aims to help these people by
making the University of Maine programs at the
Hutchinson Center available to them through
financial aid.
q Andrew E. Kuby, Jr. Memorial
(Belfast Rotary Scholarship Fund)
$500 Belfast Rotary scholarship awarded to one
student in the fall and spring semesters (not
available in the summer semester). Scholarship
is awarded at the beginning of the semester.
The reimbursement check will be available upon
completion of the course at the end of the
semester by submission of the grade to Belfast
Rotary Scholarship Committee. The Rotary
Club values the ideals of personal character,
academic achievement and service to the
community and looks for these qualities in its
awardees.

q Senior College Hutchinson Center
The Senior College at the University of Maine
Hutchinson Center offers two $1,000 scholarships
each year to Maine residents over the age of 35
who are taking classes at the Hutchinson Center
and are in need of financial assistance. Senior
College recognizes the value of continuing
education for adults and the financial strain this
can create. The Scholarship Committee of the
University of Maine Hutchinson Center shall select
students to receive this scholarship.
q American Association University Women
Mid-Coast Maine Branch of the American
Association University Women (AAUW) offers a
scholarship funding for first-time college students
and for those who have been out of college
for awhile, to cover cost of one initial college
class including tuition, fees, books and required
materials at the UMaine Hutchinson Center.
q Seaport Family Practice — Health Professional
The Hutchinson Center Health Professional
Scholarship is an annual award for an adult
returning to school for a career in the health
professions. The recipient need not have the
highest GPA or greatest financial need, but must
exhibit qualities that are necessary for success in
a health career: compassion, curiosity, humility,
determination, sense of humor, and a willingness
to work with others.The Hutchinson Center
Health Professional Scholarship is sponsored
by Seaport Family Practice. Recipients are
chosen by the Hutchinson Center Scholarship
Committee.
