follow this time honored pattern once
again this year.
It takes a great deal of hard work to
put on a show. Many volunteers are
needed, and we add a generous
sprinkling of dealers. It's not just a lot
of work, it’s fun too! It makes you
appreciate what’s involved in such a
large undertaking, and ultimately, you
feel part of the process. I encourage
you to sign up and volunteer to help
with some part of the show.

April General Meeting
Pocket Studios.com. Dave has written a book “The
Adventures of Piffel the Elf”, it can be bought at Barnes and
Nobles or Amazon.com.
The April 6 meeting of the Georgia Mineral Society was
called to order at 7:35 pm by Bill Waggener, President.
There were 6 visitors with a total of 43 in attendance. Carl
Ziglin asked if there was anyone in the house with a PhD.
There was none.
Carl introduced Julian Gray who gave a great program on
Mineral Oddities and the Tucson Show. Julian received
two l0.0’s and a 9.8 by the GMS judges. Afterwards Carl
presented Julian with a polished piece of wood from
Oregon.
John Trimble gave a presentation on the building. The
trustees have authorized John to proceed with getting
prices and renovation costs while he was setting up

for April 21. The May meeting will be on Tuesday the 12th.
Frank Decaminada has completed the audit for 2007. We
had a $17,854.33 gain for the year. Lizabeth played with
her glasses. Field trip and adopt a hwy information is in
Tips and Trips. Bill attended the National Science Teachers
Association in New Orleans. They were impressed with his
work in Paulding County. We have received our first minigrant application for the year. Carolyn Daniel reported that
we had 29 teams competing at the High School Science
Olympiad Fossil event last weekend at Emory University.
On May 15, she will oversee the National Fossil Science
Olympiad in Augusta. She will also be supervising the
Elementary School Science Olympiad. Recently she
handled the Middle School Olympiad in Woodstock. Bill
asked that the members volunteer when we are requested
to provide a speaker. Roxanne reported that the juniors
went to the Hills of Iron Event at Red Top Mountain, this
included a mine tour and Roxanne collected tadpoles.
There will be no junior meeting in April.
Kim reported that the June picnic and auction will be June
20 at Jones Bridge Park. Also keep October 17 opened for
the GMS workday and auction at his house.
The Show Committee is working hard. All but two dealer
contracts have arrived. Tom Batcha is getting people to fill
the cases. John is lining up demos. Mary Porter has been
working at her computer putting addresses for our mail out
next week. Richard Graveline is signing up people for the
front desk. On Wednesday, Kim will be going to the fire
marshals for approval of the floor plan. Kim encourages
everyone to take show flyers. The grab bag stuffing will be
on April 26 at Kim’s house at a covered dish lunch at noon.
The executive board will also meet on April 26 at 10:30am
at Kim’s.
Carl stated that the May Meeting will be back at the
Chamblee library.
Dave Babulski has a new micromineral art website -Crystal
John Trimble gave his presentation on the new building in
Roswell. It is two adjourning condos near Mansell Road
and was built in 1985. There are several steps involved in
obtaining this property. 1. The building committee found
property with potential. 2. The building committee approved
of the property. 3. The trustees have approved. 4. Find
costs for remodeling, furnishing and operating expenses. 5.
Explain the findings to the membership. 6. Give feedback
from the members to the trustees. 7. Trustee approval for
negotiation with a set price. The real estate agent will
negotiate the price. It will be up to everyone to help
renovate and move into the new building. We have two
estimates: The first estimate is for $6282 and the second is
for $16,474. The second reflects work that was not
discussed with the first company. There is estimated cost
of $1300 for handicap bathrooms to be in compliance with
the rules of the Americans Disability Act. We will need to
re-floor the workrooms. There will be expenses to renovate
the kitchen with a stove, sink, and microwave. A mop sink
for the lapidary room will run about $100. Projection Screen
is about $500. $7000 is estimated for 70 chairs at $100
each. $1320 is estimated for twelve tables at $110 each.
$300 for ten lights for cabbing at $30 each. $750 for three
storage cabinets at $250 each, $140 for a podium. $100 for
a projector stand. There will be additional costs for
refurnishing the lapidary equipment. Condo association
fees will run $250 per month for parking, maintenance, and
outside upkeep. The phone is $50 per month. There is a
security system installed but there will be cost for use.
Insurance should be $50 per month and utilities about $100
per month. There will be numerous miscellaneous
expenses. We can expect an estimated income from the
workshop of about $380 a month; this will be $3 /hour from
3 people for 3 nights a week for 4.3 weeks /month. One
side of the building will be for workshops and classes and
will house our library, slab saw, and faceting machines.
Two of the four bathrooms will be converted into handicap
and the other to be incorporated into the two kitchenettes
making one kitchen. A portion of one of the bathrooms will
be converted to hold a slop sink. Walls in the opposite side
will be removed and the area converted into a meeting
room. Some windows will need replacing; there is a utility
room that connects both sides. Bill said that we need to
keep in mind the resale value of the units. The remaining
walls will need reworking and the carpet will have to go. It
was suggested that we paint the concrete or seal and paint
the concrete floor. We will have room for a rock trimmer
and fossil preparation. There will be no room for the
material from the three sheds in Kim’s backyard. John
stated that if the carpet is glued down then we cannot paint
the floor. This is plenty of parking with handicap access
with about 40 spaces close by.

Greetings to all,
Be still my heart! Is this a dream or are we actually
seriously looking at a home for GMS? Since the first
meeting in 1935 with the first donation ($100), the Georgia
Mineral Society has maintained a Building Fund with
repeated efforts to establish a home. Long before I came
along, GMS looked and planned. Always the money on
hand was well managed and growing. The first year that I
was President, a new home was my stated goal for the
year… it did not happen. Joan’s Building Committee
presented several possible locations.

home. None of these efforts progressed to an operating
budget status or a bid.

Junior Field Trip
A Day in a Miner’s Life

Peek back at life in the 1830s with demonstrations on gold
panning, blacksmithing, shingle making, pioneer tools,
candle making, folk toys, spinning, pine needle basket
making and more. $3.50-$5 for the different activities. We
will meet at the Town Center at the Gold Museum at 9 a.m.
If there is enough interest, we can visit one of the mines
nearby.

The meeting room should hold about 40 seats; the building
association is enthusiastic about the possibility of our
moving in. The roof was replaced within the last two years
and the outside wood has recently been repainted. The
building is one level above flood plain but is near the top of
the hill and has good drainage. We may have 8-10 parking
spaces in the daytime but there are plenty of spaces within
easy walking distance. Lizabeth suggested using googleearth to look at the outside of the building and Bill
suggested that that should be Kim’s job. Rose our real
estate agent said that we can set up a time for the
members can come look at the building. Bill said that he,
John, and Anita will be there the next day at 1:30pm if
anyone wishes to see it. Jay Gorday pulled on his beard
and crossed his legs. Mary Porter sipped on her Mountain
Dew. Sue asked if we could get a mortgage or we had to
pay cash down. She asked about how much of our
reserves would be left. Bill assured her that we will have
reserves and John stated we should have about $60K left.
John said that we might publish an extra edition of Tips and
Trips to explain the proposal to the membership. Kim
cleared his throat. Sharon White asked if there were many
condo rules. John said that there are rules and that he will
have to read over them. Sue said that our workshop
income should pay for the workshop only and will not pay
for our other expenses. Bill will come up with an operating
budget before we make a final decision. Lawrence Parker
asked who are our Trustees? Bill stated that they are
Marcella Wood, Eva Ostrofsky, Anita Westlake, John
Trimble, and himself. Bill asked for the membership to send
all of their email questions to Kim. Then as an after thought
that the questions should go to himself. Lizabeth asked
about the neighborhood, there are three schools and a park
nearby and the residential areas are nice, there are many
car dealerships on Alpharetta Hwy, the crime level is low
and the area well patrolled.
Kim will take donated stamps to Olin Banks. An additional
visitor was introduced. Margaret Ronan gave out door
prizes. Bill named the nominating committee, the two board
positions are John Trimble chair, Kim Cochran; the three
non-board positions are Julian Gray, Linda Batcha, and
Ginger Peterson. Ginger Peterson made a motion to
adjourn and it was seconded by John Trimble, the motion
carried and the meeting ended at 9:53.

It’s Showtime
All of our months of planning is about to come to together.
Things are really about to get busy. As I have mentioned
before a show does not just happen. It takes the efforts of
many. As of this writing we are waiting on two more
contacts. There are still a few cases available for exhibits.
There are openings if you wish to demonstrate. We have
many timeslots open to work the front desk. We need folks
to help bring food for the dealer dinner. The post cards
were mailed out a few weeks ago. The grab bags have
been filled. Most of the auction items have been gathered.
As you see there is much to be done. As in the past with
your help we will have another successful show.

Hello GMS members, We would like to continue to
remember Dot Durden. Remember Jeannette Banks, she
had hip surgery at Crawford Long and is waiting on results
from that surgery as well as she will begin physical rehab at
South Cobb Hospital. We should also remember Olin as he
is taking good care of her during this time.

you have going on in your lives that you would like to

Hills of Iron Field Trip Review
Sometimes, you just miss something good. That was the
junior trip on March 21. The weather was perfect. The
speakers were interesting. The trip to ochre mines at the
nearby New Riverside Ochre Company was fun. We even
got to join Tom Batcha with an archeology group from
Gwinnett to visit an old furnace way, way off the beaten
path. We collected rock specimen and hundreds of
tadpoles for our schools. And after nearly a month, I still
have mud on my tires. But, it was worth it. Don’t miss the
Hills of Iron Field celebration of the iron industry next year
at Red Top Mountain State Park. We definitely got dirty
and had fun.

Children: Allowed only under close adult supervision.
Fee: There is no fee to visit the mountain but a donation for
the caretaker is recommended.
Collecting: Rutile, lazulite, prophyllite, iridescent hematite,
pyrite, ilmenite, muscovite, fuchsite and various microminerals.
Directions: Take I-20 east to the exit for Washington, Ga.
SR78 (SR10, SR17) and turn left. Travel North to
Washington. Turn right onto SR378 and drive about 11
miles to the Graves Mountain area. The entrance to Graves
Mountain is about ½ mile east of the Lincoln County Line
and on the south side of the road. Liability release forms
will be signed and donations made at the entrance to
Graves Mountain. Parking will only be allowed at the
parking area at the end of the paved entrance road.
Safety: The quarry contains high and unstable walls and
loose rock can become dislodged creating a hazard. Stay
away from all highwalls. Wear sturdy footwear to prevent
injuries. Safety glasses when using hammers.
Tools: Rock hammer, chisels, sledge, pry bar, storage
containers and a hand truck to take items to and from the
collecting areas.
Other Essentials: Pets must be kept under control and on
a leash. Bring plenty of water and food since none is
available at the mountain. Everyone needs to be off the
mountain by 8:00 pm.

DMC Program / SFMS Field Trip committee's purpose:
To collect field trip information from it's member societies; schedule and
coordinate field trip dates; disseminate field trip information to all
member clubs so that each member society may publish this information
as one of their "official" scheduled field trips.

Geology Hike Sunday, May 10, 2009 1 PM ‐ 3 PM Sweetwater Creek State Park ‐ Lithia Springs, GA Geologist and Friends of Sweetwater Creek State Park member John Johnston will lead a moderate 2‐mile hike identifying rock types and explaining how they formed. There will also be a visit inside the ruins of the Civil War era New Manchester Mill alongside the beautiful rapids of Sweetwater Creek. $1‐$2 plus $3 parking. 770‐732‐5876.
