SHEEP TAGGING & RECORDING REQUIREMENTS FROM 1ST JANUARY 2015
ENGLAND – LAMBS
As from 1st January all lambs being identified from this date on any holding in England must be identified with either Double
Electronic Tags (Breeders) or a Single Electronic Slaughter Tag (Prime Lambs and/or Store Lambs).
Sheep Keepers will record the single identified lambs by batch – recording the Number of
Animals and Flock Numbers.
Lambs born in 2014 and identified with a single, non-electronic tag DO NOT need to be
retagged when moved after 1st January 2015.
CULL EWES
Those individually identified with electronic tags will be electronically read and recorded.
For those individually identified with the old style Manual/Non-Electronic Tags (Historic Flock) it is our recommendation that
Sheep Keepers retag these at the time of selling with a set of double electronic tags.
However rules do permit:
Those sheep being moved as a “Batch” direct to slaughter (including through a market) using old manual tags as the identifier list the total number in each consignment
BUT
If these sheep move to a non-abattoir holding or through a market to a non-abattoir holding, they must have their individual
manual/non electronic tags (UK +(up to) 12 digits) read and recorded on the Movement Licence.
We recommend any Historic Flock with old style non electronic tags be sold with a declaration to slaughter.
Please ensure all Ewes sold are tagged with electronic tags – we will read them and provide you with print outs of numbers –
failure could impact upon your Single Farm Payment Monies. If in doubt please speak to Keith on 07801 032847 or James
on 07772 618315

Twilyte Limousin
dispersal sells to 6000gns peak
The dispersal of the Holling family’s Twylite herd of Limousins at Newark on Saturday 6 June
saw a solid trade throughout, with pedigree and commercial buyers in attendance and willing
to pay well for well bred, correct females.
Auctioneer Paul Gentry said trade reflected the uncertainty in the prime beef sector at the moment, with buyers slightly more cautious than at previous dispersals. “There were some great
cattle on offer and those buyers with confidence in the beef industry were prepared to pay well
for the cattle they wanted. Unfortunately, the continuing issues in the prime cattle trade are filtering back to the breeding sector and some buyers were less keen to commit.
“Overall trade was good and the cattle on offer were a credit to the dedication of the Holling
family to breeding functional, modern cattle suited to a wide range of farming systems,” he
added.
Leading the prices was a 6000gns call for the herd’s 2011-born stock bull, Manorhouse Geronimo, a Mayfields Drambuie son out of Manorhouse Velcro, a Hartside Oneman daughter. Bred by
W J Wright, he sold to F S Knight, Stoke Doyle, Peterborough.
Second best at 4800gns was another of the stock bulls, Confluence Greta. This Greenwell
Charttopper son is out of Confluence Bly, a Plaisant daughter and was the choice of P and J H
Boyle, Southoweram, Halifax.
Topping the female prices at 4400gns was a heifer and calf outfit, with this being Twilyte Holly,
a 2012-born Redskins Enzo daughter out of Hodgro Polygala, a Bapton Javelin daughter. She
sold in calf to Annandale Excalibur and was knocked at 2400gns to M P Carter, Lutterworth,
while her heifer calf, Twilyte Jaynie by Confluence Greta sold at 2000gns to P R Walker and
Son, Lund, Driffield.
Then at 3700gns Twilyte Jazzy, a Redskins Enzo daughter out of Twilyte Bliss,a Jencralodge
Supasonic daughter. This January 2014-born heifer headed to Northern Ireland with L
McEldowney, Maghera, Co Down.
The same buyer then paid 3600gns for Twilyte Inara, a November 2013-born heifer by Redskins Enzo out of Scorboro Chanel, a Limo Tanat daughter.
www.newarklivestocksales.com
Following her at 3200gns was Coachhouse Fiona, a Coachhouse Bingo daughter out of Coachhouse Valletta, a Haltcliffe Picasso daughter. This one sold with her heifer calf, Twilyte Lucy,
at foot and was bought by F and S Stamper, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
Another heifer and calf outfit then followed at 3050gns, with this being the Pennys Donny
daughter Twilyte Hetty and her heifer Twilyte Jiggle, a Confluence Greta daughter. Hetty sold
for 2000gns and is out of Twilyte Ettie, a Lawf Scott daughter and sold to Rowplant, Tibshelf,
Alfreton, Derbyshire, while Jiggle was knocked down to R L Ritchie, Wainfleet St Mary, Skegness, at 1050gns.
Then making 2900gns was Twilyte Gemstone, an Annandale Excalaber sired heifer out of
Fieldson Vanessa, a Mereside Rufus daughter. She sold with her heifer calf, Twilyte Jade, at
foot and was bought by M P Carter, Lutterworth.
The same buyer then spent 2800gns on Twilyte Glow, a Greenwell Donny sired second calver
out of Beck Audrey, a Beck Regent daughter. She sold with a heifer calf, Twilyte Lily, at foot by
Coachhouse Bingo.
Also making this price was calved heifer Twilyte Hatty, a Redskins Enzo daughter out of
Twilyte Dainty, a Lawf Scott daughter. Sold with her heifer calf at foot, Twilyte Jigsaw, she
sold in-calf again and was bought by Messrs Carter again.
A pair then made 2700gns, with the first being Twilyte Glamour, a Pennys Donny daughter
out of a Scarcliffe Nijinsky daughter. She had a heifer calf at foot by Annandale Excaliber and
was bought by Dylan Pritchard, Rhosybol, Anglesey.
The other at this price was the August 2013-born heifer Twilyte Irmina, a Manorhouse Geronimo daughter out of Twilyte Elderberry, a Wilodge Ultimate daughter. Buying her were F
and S Stamper.
Just shy of that at 2650gns was the second calver Twilyte Glitter, a Pennys Donny daughter
out of Scorboro Duvet, a Ronick Upshot daughter. She sold to M P Carter with a heifer calf at
foot by Coachhouse Bingo.

On the same day two drafts of commercial cattle with calves at foot also met a ready demand,
with 40 Limousin crosses from the Gascoines Group selling to a high of £1950 twice. The first
of these sold to C E Hardcastle, Grantham, while the other was knocked down to John Casey,
Beaconsfield.
Meanwhile, the Neachell family’s draft of 26 cows and calved peaked at £1750 when selling to
R N Gent, Newark, with another at £1720 bought by John Casey.

Market. Please call any time to discuss marketing and what
day of the week….
Still the Hoggs keep coming and today the heavy hoggs

MR ROBERT E. NEEDHAM, LOUTH
In summary of a proper man, always the same, loved a joke and banter with his many friends
and fellow cattle men
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Robert Needham, of Lincolnshire, in his
sleep on Wednesday 3rd June 2015, at the age of 71.
Robert attended the Royal Smithfield Show every year since leaving school and competed in
the Young Farmers Competitions.
His family had exhibited at Smithfield since 1958.
He became a Member of the Club in 1965, served on the Club’s Council from 1973 to 2009
and was elected a Vice President of the Club in 2006.
Robert was steward of cattle at Smithfield from 1979 and was Chief Cattle Steward five times
between 1988 and 1993. He judged the Pure Breed Cattle and Championships in 1978 and
again officiated as judge of the Cattle Championships in 2000.
In 2004, having won the Regional National Festival of Meat Beef Ribs Championship at the
2003 Countryside Live Event to qualify, he entered and won the Supreme Champion Beef Ribs
title at the 2004 Royal Smithfield Show Grand Final and won the Beef Ribs Championship
again at the 2011 and 2013 East of England Smithfield Festival and was Reserve Champion in
2014.
Robert was a top Breeder of Lincoln Red cattle under the renown Market Stainton Herd and
with his family won the Lincoln Red Breed Championship numerous times. Robert was well
respected throughout the cattle work and had judged virtually all county and national show
both home and overseas.
The funeral of Robert Needham will take place on Monday 15th June 2015, at 2.00 p.m., at St
Peter’s Church, Gayton le Wold, Louth, Lincolnshire
(For directions use LN11 0RA, which will get you very close to the Church, on the same road.)
Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy are with Ann; John, Sue & Family; Rachel, Robin
& Family and Richard, Rosemarie and Family at this sad time.

Voting slips are out, please vote - BWMB English Central Region Nominee Kate Drury -Katherine E Drury Bsc(Hons) NDA AICB
MRAC
After talking to farmers recently in markets throughout the Midlands it is clear that the wool industry faces an exciting and challenging time. I look forward, if elected, to working hard to meet these challenges on your behalf.
The BWMB is invaluable to the sheep industry always providing a place to sell wool. In turn supporting all sheep producers and
the stratification system that we rely on to maintain agriculture as a way of life throughout the UK. They actively engage with all
levels of the wool industry from farm to shop and are best placed to help the industry adapt to the market. Ultimately price is
key and we must strive to make wool a valuable commodity and not a cost to the farm budget.
I have been fortunate to have been involved in agriculture my whole life, growing up and working on the family farm near Market
Harborough, Leics/Northants Border. Competing at a National level with Berrrichon sheep and regularly visiting the Paris
Show.
Attending two agricultural colleges, Moulton and The Royal at Cirencester, and working on research stations both in the Uk and
in France I am passionate about where we stand in the sheep world for both wool and meat. I have worked for a shearing gang,
an agricultural market, education/farming charity and have experience of lobbying, and the board room through Council and
School Governor work.
The English Central Region covers a diverse 17 counties and therefore requires a broad approach to represent it. It is an exciting time with wool commanding a bigger audience through the “Campaign for Wool”, demand increasing on the world stage,
consumers wanting local/natural products and shearing training valued. If I am successful I will relish the opportunity to represent you.
