“Commercial Marketing Booster of the Year”
Ed Pinegar, Pinegar Limousin of Springfield,
Missouri was named as the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) “Commercial Marketing Booster of the Year”. This long-time Limousin firm was recognized at the annual Genetics on
Ice banquet held January 12, 2015 at the Double
Tree Hotel in Denver, CO. This event took place
in conjunction with the National Western Stock
Show (NWSS). The award recognized a seed
stock producer who has demonstrated a strong
commitment to commercial cattle producers.
He grew up on a small family farm and that
farm is now the headquarters of his operation.

honored at the National Western
Stock Show in Denver, Colorado
as the North American Limousin
Foundation (NALF) “Commercial
Producer of the Year”. The award
was presented to Hepper at the
Genetics on Ice social and banquet
held at the Double Tree Hotel on
Monday, January 12, 2015.
He was selected from a group
of commercial producers nominated by various state Limousin
associations to receive the coved
national “Commercial Producer of
the Year. Dale McLellan of Lantry,
South Dakota and Bruce and Gail

Wayne grew up on a family
run ranch near Fort Yates, ND.
He began his ranch activity when
he was just 24 years old, with six
cows. He has now grown his commercial Angus based cow herd to
over 2,700 cows in south central
North Dakota.
The Flying O Ranch has earned
a well-deserved reputation as one
of the most progressive beef producers in the United States. Wayne
and his wife, Jane are passionate
promoters of the beef industry
and recognize how Limousin fit
in a disciplined crossbreeding
program, adding value throughout
the food chain.
They have purchased Limousin
bulls over the years; emphasizing
calving ease, growth and carcass
merit as they have expanded their
herd. He maintains a tight breeding
season to keep consistency in his
calf crop.
He has utilized value added

programs to increase the demand
for his product. He EIDs all of his
calves and targets the NHTC program along with the All-Natural.
He also meets the requirements
of the GAP program for humane
handling.
Wayne still uses horseback to
sort bulls. He has been totally impressed by the great strides in the
improvement of Limousin docility.
Flying O calves do exceptionally well in the feedlot. Wulf Cattle
of Morris, MN has purchased
the Hepper calves in the past and
continue to purchase them for their
consistency and performance in the
Wulf feeding operation.

Agricultural Scholarship at MSU
for a local student majoring in
agriculture.
Pinegar has committed himself
to raising sound, functional cattle that work in the commercial
industry. He uses performance
data and ultrasound information to
improve his product. In addition
he develops a sound phenotype
to go along with the performance
data to produce a product that will
be marketable to seed stock and
commercial producers alike. He
is expanding the use of Limousin
in southwest Missouri through
his production sale and support
of various consignment sales in
Missouri.
Ed is not only interested in
producing the best product he can,
but he also is committed to supporting the North American Junior
Limousin Association. He served
on the North American Limousin
Foundation Board of Directors
from 2003-2008. He was selected
to the Missouri Limousin Association “Hall of Fame” in 2013 and
he was also awarded the Honorary
NALJA member award.
Pinegar Limousin is also committed to promoting Limousin
genetics by a variety of advertisement programs including a large
billboard on Highway 13 near his
farm with the prominent word,
LIMOUSIN and directions to his
farm.
Ed and his wife, Carol, have
four children and nine grandchildren. He values the many dear
friends he has made over the years
and he is dedicated to continuing
the improvement of the Limousin
breed.

Now that we are home from
the National Western Stock Show
in Denver, it is fun to sit back and
reflect on the events of the week.
There were a few “firsts” this year
and I would like to share them
with you.
The week started off with the
induction ceremony for Herman
Symens into the NALF “Hall of
Fame”. It was fun to be part of
the committee and be in on the
“planning stages” of such an important event. I remember the look
of surprise on Herman and Judy’s
face when they were given the
news back in May – thinking they
were there for a birthday party for
Tom Vaughn.
Monday brought the opening of
the Hospitality Tent in the Yards.
NALF sponsored the tent and
Heartland had the volunteers to
staff the tent during the week. We
made the coffee, which was a must
on the cold days and also brought
the Heartland popcorn popper.
Making the popcorn proved
more of a challenge than we
thought. The boxes of popcorn
and oil were in the back of our
truck. We unloaded it Monday
morning and thought we were
“good to go”. Unfortunately, the
oil froze in the packages. I thought
if I put the frozen chunks in the hot
popper, it would melt and be just
fine. No such luck! I got a batch
of smelly, burned popcorn.
Brooks Jeral Marthaler was born on
January 20, 2015. Parents are Jake
and Rachel Marthaler of Hastings,
MN. Grandparents are Jerry and
Linda Wulf of Morris, mn and Steve
and Jeanne Marthaler of Hastings.
Brooks was welcomed home by his
brother, Levi and sister, Emery.
Our next idea was to melt the
oil by holding a package on the hot
coffee pot and another one in front
of the propane heater. This took
time, but eventually the oil did
melt and we had delicious popcorn.
It was a long, slow process to melt
each package, but we made it work
the first day.
We took the boxes into our hotel
room, thinking that the oil would
melt overnight. When we took
out the first package, it was still
frozen solid. We had another day
of trying to melt the oil as best as
we could. We knew that we had
to not only take the packages out
of the boxes at night, but we also
needed to put them on the heater

lbs 6 oz and was 20 1/2 in long. Very

Another first for me was to
cover all the shows on the Hill by
myself. Dean’s knee was really
bothering him. He tried walking
up the incline to get to the barn on
the Hill on Monday, but he ended
up in so much pain that he decided
it would be his last trip. As a result,
I took the camera, watched the
shows and took the photos.
Dean and I ended our week
having one of the most delicious
meals we have ever eaten at Del
Frisco’s. The steak was so tender
that it melted in your mouth. I can
see why it is such a popular place
to dine. We also had a great meal
at The Keg in downtown Denver
when we first arrived in Denver.
We started and ended our week
with wonderful steak dinners!

on December 6, 2014 in Des Moines,
IA. Emily is the daughter of Dan
and Linda Brewer, Brewer Farms
Limousin, Dallas Center, IA. The newest addition to Eggbar
Limousin is Chloe Rahnea Martin born
January 29, 2015. She weighed 8 lbs.

Herman Symens Inducted Into NALF “Hall of Fame”

inducted into the North American
Limousin Foundation “Hall of
Fame” Sunday evening, January
11, 2015 at the Double Tree Hotel
in Denver, Colorado. The ceremony took place in conjunction with
the National Western Stock Show.
A standing room only crowd
was on hand to congratulate Herman and his wife, Judy of Sisseton,
South Dakota on this prestigious
award. The Limousin breed acknowledges the accomplishments
of their long-time supporters and
breeders through the “Hall of
Fame”.
The program began with a
review of the Symens accomplishments and praise for their
commitment to the Limousin breed
highlighted by speeches from six
presenters. Tom Vaughn, former
NALF board member of Cavalier,
North Dakota, nominated Herman
for the award. He gave a review
of the process that was involved
in nominating a candidate for this
award and the unique way that
Herman was told of the award.
Dean Summerbell, Executive
Secretary of the Heartland Limousin Association, gave an overview
of Herman’s career highlights and
his dedication to the cattle industry
as well as stories about his involvement with the youth. He also
commented on the knowledge and
advice he has gotten from Herman
over the years.
Bob Yackley of Onida, South
Dakota, long-time Limousin
breeder and former NALF president, commented on Herman and
Judy’s continued support of the
South Dakota Limousin Association. He also talked about the

Missouri News ...
Annual Meeting and Banquet to be held in Lebanon
Members of the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association will
hold their annual meeting, banquet
and benefit auction on Saturday,
April 18, 2015. The festivities will
take place at the Laclede County
Fairgrounds in Lebanon. This
will be held in conjunction with
the “Great American Pie Sale” to
be held the next day, April 19, at
the fairgrounds.
The social will begin at 5:30
p.m. followed by the meal at 6:30
p.m. There will be a silent auction,
live auction and raffle.
Great American Pie Sale
The “Great American Pie Sale”
will take place Sunday, April 19,
2015 at the Laclede County Fairgrounds in Lebanon. To get to the
fairgrounds you need to take #129
Lebanon exit, go west on Jefferson
(Hwy 64) 0.6 miles to Elm Street.
Turn right (east) 0.4 miles to the
Laclede County Fairgrounds. The
building for the dinner on Saturday
night is next to the sale arena on the
fairgrounds.

Dennis Alt, Double A Limousin, was elected to the NALF
Board of Directors at the annual
meeting in Denver, CO January
12, 2015. Double A Limousin
is located in Shawnee, KS and
Nevada, MO.
Alt and his father purchased
their first Limousin bulls in 1978
to use in their 800-head of commercial cattle. From 1983-1995
they were part of Quelques Vaches
Land & Cattle. Dennis re-entered
the registered Limousin business
in 2011. Double A currently
runs approximately 150 cows,
predominately Lim-Flex with an
emphasis on producing bulls for
the commercial cattlemen.
Dennis serves as vice president
of the Missouri Limousin Breeders
Association, he is a member of the
Heartland Limousin Association,
the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association and the NCBA. He is a
member of the St. Joseph parish
in Shawnee.
He and his wife, Nancy, have a
daughter, Kelsey, and son, Nathan;
and two grandchildren, Cooper
and Thayer.
Field Day
The MLBA field day will be
held in conjunction with the Missouri Cattlemen’s Show June 1214, 2015 at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. Entry forms
will be available on the MLBA
website in April/May. The Open
Show will take place Saturday,
June 13. The Junior Show will be
held Sunday following the MCA
Junior Show.

In Memoriam
Nadine Gentzsch
Nadine Elizabeth Gentzsch of
Millersburg, MO passed away
November 22, 2014 at the age of
71. Services were held November
26 at the Debo Funeral Home in
Fulton, MO.
She graduated from Fulton High
School and received her degree
from Christian College in Columbia, MO. She was employed
at Don Landers & Company in
Columbia until her retirement.
Nadine was a lifelong cattlewoman. She and her husband
Bill and daughter, Shea, operated
Gentzsch Limousin for several
years. Bill served on the North
American Limousin Foundation
board of directors and Shea was
the editor of the Limousin World
for several years. They are also
life-time members of the Heartland

Fullblood Alliance Holds Meeting
Members of the Fullblood Limousin Alliance (FLA) held their
quarterly meeting at the Pear Tree
Inn in Sikeston, MO January 24,
2015.
The results of the election for
the board of directors was announced. Randy McCutcheon of
St. Joe, AR and Ken Ragsdell of
Rolla, MO were elected to threeyear terms to replace retiring board
members Stephen Haynes and
Billy White. The current officers
will serve another term and they
were appointed by acclamation.
Three FLA heifer grant recipients were announced. Colt
Schrader of Beggs, OK and John
and Emma Holland of Ft. Gibson,
OK were the lucky winners.
The Fullblood show will be
held in conjunction with the Ozark
Empire Fair in Springfield, MO
July 30-August 2, 2015. The
junior members will have an opportunity to exhibit their animals
in three shows. More details will
be printed in the next issue of the
Heart Beat and the FLA website.
The 2015 budget was set and
the goals for the organization
were discussed. Registrations of
Fullblood cattle were up this past
year; however, members were
encouraged to increase not only
registrations but also membership
in the organization.
Other items discussed include
the updating of the FLA website.
It is now more user-friendly. In
addition, Stephen Haynes is working on having a sale in the fall in
Bowling Green, KY.
Door prizes were given out
and the winners were Deanne and
Lesliegh Christensen, MO; Violet
Barnard, AR; Emily Haynes, KY;
Terrill Britt, OK; and Laura Ray,
KY.
The next FLA meeting will
be held in Guthrie, OK April 11,
2015. The time and place will be
announced at a later date.

Junior Field Day will take place on
Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the Martin
County Fairgrounds in Fairmont,
MN. This event will follow the
Heartland Regional Show, also in

heifer at next year’s Iowa Beef

Donald Lindsey
Donald Charles Lindsey, father
of Dustin and Shane Lindsey, of
Spirit Lake, IA passed away December 26, 2014 at the age of 75.
Services were held December 31,
2014 at the Good News Community Church in Okoboji, IA
He was born and raised in the
northwest area of Iowa. He was
active in 4-H and FFA. Fitting
and showing livestock became his
greatest interest. After graduation,
he worked in Odebolt fitting and
grooming cattle at major livestock
shows.
Don farmed for many years in
addition to working as an order
buyer and a field representative
at Sheldon Livestock. He was a
member of the Good News Community Church in Okoboji and the
Iowa Cattleman’s Association.
He is survived by his wife,
Charlene; four sons all living in IA,
Lon of Milford, Shane of Prairie
City, Jay of Des Moines and Dustin
(Jeri) of Terril; a daughter, Robin
(Dana) Johnson of Bellavue, NE;
a step-daughter, Kristi (Mike) Wolthuis of Fostoria, IA,; a step-son,
Tracy Fanning, ten grandchildren,
eight great-grandchildren and
many other friends and relatives.

Edward Leih
Edward Craft Leih of Indianola,
IA passed away January 11, 2015
at the age of 90. Funeral services
were held January 16 in Indianola.
Memorials were requested to be
given to the Warren County Fair
in Indianola.
He spent his early adulthood
serving in the United States Navy
during WWII where he fought
in the Pacific Theatre. After his
marriage in 1948, he and his wife,
Betty, bought their farm in Warren
County, IA and raised three boys.
He also worked for John Deere
and continued to add land to their
family farm.
In 1972 Edward started raising
Limousin cattle and found passion
for the cattle business. He attended
shows and sales and also delivered
bulls across the county and into
Canada and Mexico.
Edward was a member of the
Medora United Methodist Church,
Warren County Cattlemen’s Association and the North American
Limousin Association. He shared
his favorite hobby of fishing with
three generations of Leih children.
He is survived by his wife,
Betty; sons David and Joe (Jan),
daughter-in-law, Neena; nine
grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren along with many other
friends and relatives.

Annual Meeting, Banquet and Benefit Auction March 7
The Minnesota Limousin Association will hold their annual
meeting, banquet and benefit auction March 7, 2015 at the Litchfield
VFW located at 915 E Hwy 12.
The social will begin at 11:15
a.m. followed by the junior meeting at 11:30 and the meal at 12:00.
We hope to have a large contingent
of Limousin enthusiasts take part
in this annual event.

Show
Members of the Minnesota
Limousin Association will serve
as the host for the 2015 Heartland
Limousin Regional Show. This
annual event will take place at
the Martin County Fairgrounds in
Fairmont, MN June 5-6.
Cattle need to be stalled by
noon Friday; however, exceptions
will be made if there are school
conflicts. Contact Dean Summerbell, HLA Executive Secretary at

situation, when you will arrive,
and the number of cattle that you
are bringing.
That afternoon there will be a
variety of games and activities for
the junior members, organized by
the NALJA directors. In addition,

Chad Settje of Creston, NE
was elected president of the North
American Limousin Foundation
board of directors at the annual
meeting January 12, 2015 in
Denver, CO. He will serve in this
capacity for 2015-2016. He joined
the NALF board of directors in
2010 and has served two terms as
treasurer.
Lonely Valley Limousin sold
over 120 bulls in 2014 and they
have a repeat customer rate over
90%. That is attributed to breeding functional cattle that fit their
customer’s demands.
In addition to managing the

Awards Scholarships
Mark and Marion Nutter of Thedford,
NE braved the chilly temperatures as
they looked over the bulls in the Yards
at the NWSS.
Jay and Carol Boyer of Liberty,
NE awarded two scholarships this
year. These scholarships are given
to young people who have a background in Limousin cattle and have
shown their projects at the county,
state, regional or national levels.
Carter Siems of DeWitt, NE
was the lucky recipient of one
of the scholarships. He showed
his heifer, DJKO Astro Lady, a
1/29/13 daughter of War Alliance
out of Boyer’s Kiss of Love 170K.
The other scholarship winner
was Dallas Donovan of Lincoln,

Pen & Carload Show Completes Limousin Events at NWSS
The Pen & Carload Show, held Thursday, January 15, 2015 concluded
an exciting week of Limousin events at the National Western Stock Show
(NWSS) in Denver, CO. Twelve exhibitors brought 18 pens and five
carloads of bulls for judges Mike Smith of Plainville, KS; Dr. Dave Nichols of Manhattan, KS; and Gary Giacomini of Bishop, CA to evaluate.
Grand champion Pen of Three Lim-Flex Bulls.
Magness Land & Cattle took home the grand and reserve grand
champion banners with their Lim-Flex Pen of Three bulls. The grand
champion and Division II champion pen had an average birth date of
January 3, 2014; an average weight of 1,472 lbs. and an average WDA of
3.88 lbs. This pen was also selected as the People’s Choice Lim-Flex Pen.
The grand champion purebred Pen of Three belonged to Magness Land &
Cattle.
Magness Land & Cattle of Platteville, CO exhibited the grand champion Pen of Three Limousin purebred bulls. The pen, the Division I
champion, had an average birth date of September 3, 2013; an average
weight of 1,595 lbs. and an average weight per day of age (WDA) of
3.18 lbs. CJSL Windfall 9072W sired the group.
Magness Land & Cattle won reserve grand champion Pen of Three banners
with their Lim-Flex bulls at the National Western.
Symens Brothers were selected the Reserve Grand Champion Purebred pen
with their April bulls.
The reserve grand champion Pen of Three and Division III champion,
came from Symens Bros. of Amherst, SD. This pen had an average

Limousin Tops All Breeds for Sale Average in Sioux Falls
The Limousin portion of the
Sioux Empire Farm Show Red Carpet Show and Sale was held Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the W.H.
Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls,
South Dakota. Breeders from South
Dakota and Minnesota brought a
quality set of bulls and females to
the show and sale.
An enthusiastic crowd of buyers
bid aggressively and the results ended with the Limousin breed topping
all other breeds in the sales. Six out
of nine bulls brought $5,500 each
from six different buyers.

Center. Breeders from South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin
and Wyoming brought a quality set
of bulls and heifers for judge Nate

Annual Meeting, Banquet and Benefit Auction Held in Rapid City
Members of the South Dakota
Limousin Association (SDLA)
held their annual meeting, banquet
and benefit auction Thursday,
February 5, 2015 at the Ramkota
Hotel in Rapid City. This event
took place in conjunction with
the Black Hills Stock Show. The
Limousin Show and Sale was held
the next day, February 6, at the
Convention Center.
A large crowd of seedstock and
commercial breeders from South
Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin,
Wyoming, and Iowa along with
their families, friends and other
Limousin enthusiasts gathered
for the delicious prime rib buffet
dinner followed by the meeting

the crowd to the annual meeting,
banquet and benefit auction.

Glenn Treftz, SDLA president,
welcomed the crowd and introduced the members of the board.
He went over the treasurer’s report
and explained some of the new
ideas that the board has initiated
for advertising and promoting the
breed. Glenn also announced that
Glen Jakober of Aberdeen, SD had
given money to the association in
memory of his wife, Sharon. That
money will be used for the next
five years to sponsor the jackets
that are given to the recipients of
the “Commercial Producer of the
Year”.
Dean Summerbell, Executive
Secretary of the Heartland Limousin Association gave an overview
of activities from the previous year.
He then had the honor of presenting the “Commercial Producer of
the Year” award to Sterns Farms of
Garden City, SD.
There was an election for an
open seat on the SDLA board of
directors. Matt Bruner of Astoria,
SD was elected. We want to thank
Amanda Radke of Mitchell, SD for
her service.
The evening concluded with the
benefit auction. Chisum Peterson
of Pukwana, SD served as the auctioneer. Thanks for your service!
There was a wide variety of items
on the auction including a Valentine basket, jewelry, a western
picture frame in oak, a decorative
basket filled with wine/wine glasses, farm toys, a box of meats and
cheese, homemade pies, cookies
and breakfast rolls, and jackets. In
addition, there was also straws of
semen and advertising. The evening concluded with the famous
“mystery box”! John Franseen of
Marshfield, WI and Bart Mitchell
of Wauzeka, WI teamed up to purchase this “cooler of fun”.

SD thanked the members of the
association for recognizing him as the
“Commercial Producer of the Year”.
Stern Farms Named SD “Commercial Producer of the Year”
The South Dakota Limousin
Association selected Delmer and
Lynda Stern of Garden City, SD
along with their son Kyle and wife
Denae as the 2015 South Dakota
Limousin “Commercial Producer
of the Year”. The Stern family
along with their daughters Angie,
Maggie, and Jill and granddaughter Kennedy were honored with
their award at the South Dakota
Limousin Association banquet
held at the Ramkota Hotel in Rapid
City, SD during the Black Hills
Stock Show.
The Sterns run a herd of 525 all
red Limousin-crossed Red Angus
cows which are all spring calving
beginning March 15 each year.
They retain some replacement
heifers and market the weaned
calves at the end of December in
Watertown, SD, traditionally topping the market. Symens Brothers
and Richter Feedlots of Hecla,

on an annual basis. Wulf Cattle
of Morris, MN has also bought
their calves.
Delmer began using Limousin
bulls in the late 1980’s and has purchased from a number of producers
including the first two bulls from
Symens Brothers of Amherst, SD.
Treftz Limousin, Vaughn Farms,
ROM’N Limousin, Wulf Cattle,
Venner Limousin, Bruner Limousin, Bar JZ Limousin, and the
Black Hills Stock Show Limousin
Sale have all sold Limousin bulls
to the Stern operation. They also
purchased bred heifers from Jakober Limousin to start their Limousin influence in their female herd.
They purchased the entire Limousin cow herd from John and Jean
Larson after John passed away in
2011. They also purchased a set
of Red Angus heifers bred to Liberty Ranch Limousin bulls from
Liberty Ranch and still have many
of those cows in production. In
addition to the 18 to 20 Limousin
bulls, the Sterns maintain a small
group of Charolais bulls.
Besides their livestock operation, they farm over 2,000 acres
of corn and 2,500 acres of pasture
and hay ground.

Curt Wieczorek of Mt. Vernon,
SD was elected to the North American Limousin Foundation board
of directors at the annual meeting
January 12, 2015 in Denver, CO.
Wieczorek Limousin is located
on ground that was homesteaded
by Curt’s great-grandfather in
1882. Curt is a fourth generation
farmer and with his wife, LeAnne,
and his parents Wally and Noreen,
they started using Limousin genetics in 1974. In 1981 they held their
first production sale and have hosted one ever since. They continue
to make their living in agriculture.
They have a large farming
operation in the heart of pheasant
county, and they host and guide
pheasant hunters. Curt is known
for his quality hunting dogs.
Curt is a member of the NALF
Performance committee. In addition, he is a member of the local
township and church boards, the
South Dakota Limousin Association and the Heartland Limousin
Association.
