A popular region among tourists in France
Everyone knows the place they grew up in, but not always that of the neighbours. On 1 January 2016, Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes will be merging
to form a single Region, boosting their strength and appeal. With incredibly diverse scenery and lands of history and culture, we have a lot to learn from each
other. Here's a panorama of some of the future Region's assets as a primary source of employment for those working in the French tourism industry.
A Region where the living is easy
We welcome our visitors to a climate that is sunny and gentle. We have beaches of fine sand, and ideal venues for water sports, hence the
nickname "Glissicon Valley". You can enjoy winter and summer sports, what with the Pyrenees and the Atlantic coast.
Poitou-Charentes will continue to promote its top five destinations: the Charente valley, the Futuroscope, the Poitevin marshland, La Rochelle and the Atlantic
coast (Ile de Ré, Ile d’Oléron, Rochefort and Royan). Aquitaine is also proud of its stretch of Atlantic coast along with its vineyards, beach resorts and the
Lascaux caves. Limousin can attract tourists to its porcelain art sites, gastronomy in Corrèze, great lakes and the village of Collonges-la-Rouge.
There are various labels to emphasise remarkable sites and cities of art and history as well as quaint towns packed with personality. Our
Great Region offers all sorts of top-quality holiday accommodation and will continue to support local initiatives.
Extraordinary diversity
Discover the full breadth of stupendous scenery in our Great Region. There's the ocean and mountains, lakes, marshes and forests. Some of the most extraordinary features include the
Pyrenees, the Landes pine forest, the Dune du Pilat, the Poitevin marshland, Vassivière lake and Dordogne Valley. A shining example of the sheer breadth of beautiful scenery in France!
Let us share even more: the Great Region boasts 720km of coastline, including one metropolitan city (Bordeaux) and
four large towns (Poitiers, Limoges, Bayonne and Pau), making it a truly appealing area.
Shared history embodied in exceptional heritage
Our lands are steeped in history. Saint-Savin abbey, the Limousin septennial ostensions, the Jurisdiction of Saint Emilion, the
Saintes arena, Mount Gargan and Cordouan lighthouse. Many are listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
Local arts & crafts are well represented with tapestries in Aubusson, porcelain and enamel in Limoges. The Region showcases its heritage and history via
the ancient Lascaux IV cave, the Nuits Romanes (over 150 evening events) and Oradour-sur-Glane, a centre commemorating a martyred village.
Important personalities have left their mark on the territory: Aliénor d’Aquitaine, Henri IV, Richard the Lionheart, François
1er, Jean Monnet, and François Mitterrand, further enhancing the appeal of the territory.
A rich culture accessible to all
The Region also manages culture, in terms of employment, accessibility and territorial balance. Our Great Region hosts many festivals with an
international, national or local reputation: there's the Francofolies in La Rochelle, Garorock in Marmande and the Nuits de nacre in Tulle.
Literature and film are also celebrated with the cartoon festival in Angoulême and the international festival of press cartoons and caricatures in Saint-Just-le-Martel.
Many regional languages are spoken in the Great Region, forging a strong local identity. These include Gascon, Basque, Poitevin and Languedocien.

Its bold, curvaceous lines seem to beckon you in. The building represents both a gnarled budding vine and
the nectar swirling in the glass. The whole world of wine is reflected in the sun setting over the Garonne river;
the Cité du Vin is lovely to look at and fascinating to visit.
Covering nearly 14,000 sq.m, this unique cultural site introduces you to the very soul of wine and all its various facets.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy the experience, with a circuit geared around 20 themes that whet all five senses. The
permanent exhibition is the core feature of the Cité du Vin. It gives visitors a hands-on role in finding out all about wine. Visitors travel through time and space to
learn about wine-growing and wine-loving civilisations. There are tasting sessions and introductory workshops, temporary exhibitions, a boutique selling wines from all
over the world, wine bars, a belvedere, a panoramic restaurant on the 7th floor and a wine tourism platform. An opportunity to find out about a great era that inspired
humankind, shaping their lives over the centuries.

July 2016 - The International tapestry and
woven arts centre
is due to open in Aubusson
This new museum will shed light on the various tapestries produced in Aubusson
over the centuries. A luxury product, and traditional local craft, Aubusson tapestry
has been forged by five centuries of history. It is listed as UNESCO Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Further to a call for tender to design the Cité the
project was awarded to the firm Terreneuve teaming with museographers Paoletti
and Rouland.
Located in the former Ecole Nationale d’Art Décoratif, the Cité houses spectacular
exhibits, in three times the space. It also plays a role in development, training,
support and communication. 700 sq.m are devoted to "La nef des tentures"
designed like a theatre to showcase exceptional contemporary creations. Recent
contemporary output has been exhibited against a novel backdrop. These works
include "Peau de Licorne" by Nicolas Buffe and "Confluentia" by Bina Baitel and
were produced further to calls for tender launched since 2010. The outer façades
feature striking colours with textile cladding and wooden beams, boasting clean
lines in the manner of a multi-coloured cathedral.

Nuits Romanes: over 170 festive, friendly
soirées in high summer
The biggest free festival in France is being held for the 12th consecutive year all
over Poitou-Charentes (Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne).
Featuring the masterpieces of Roman heritage in the Region, the art of spotlighting
and live performances, the Nuits Romanes have become an eagerly awaited event,
attended by over 194,000 spectators in 2015.
With 170 free shows starting at nightfall, the spotlighting of Roman edifices is
accompanied by contemporary works performed by ensembles and companies of
both national and international repute.
There are concerts (classic, gospel, soul, jazz, rock, contemporary music, world
music etc.), shows (circus, acrobatics, dancing, fireworks etc.) and gastronomy
with tasting sessions for regional produce, all setting the pace for summer in
Poitou-Charentes.

The Grand Hôtel de la Plage in Biscarrosse:
you can't get closer to the water!
This is a place teeming with history, in a fantastic location. Overlooking the
main beach in Biscarrosse, the ancient building has now been converted into
an all-white 4-star hotel overlooking the ocean. All 33 comfortable, spacious
rooms enjoy a sea view. Some rooms have a balcony, others have a terrace, where

A night by the canal in a former lock house
There are several lock keepers’ houses located along the Garonne canal, between
Bordeaux and Toulouse which have sat empty for years. They have now been
converted to develop services for those using the canal, and the tow-path, which
is now a greenway.
This is how lock keeper house No. 33 became L’Auberge de la Poule à Vélo (which
translates literally as the Cycling Hen's Inn!). This original, pastoral address for
fine dining lies some 12 km from Agen. Two elegant rooms with a canal view
occupy the first floor, with a restaurant, bar and little boutique on the ground
floor. On the menu: top quality, local produce and friendliness.
There's a bistro and service point for cyclists at lock house No. 42, called La
Chope et le Pichet (which translates literally as "The Beer Mug and Jug").

Charente shipowner's house dating from 1745 now houses one bedroom and 4
suites.
In this house restored in 2014, the suites all boast a marble well-being centre

There is one 23-sq.m room, three 41-sq.m suites and one 43-sq.m suite. They

The Les Chervelières forest estate:
two charming 4-star gîtes and two 3-star
fishing gîtes
in a singular setting.
20 minutes from the Poitevin marshland and 45 minutes from the Futuroscope,
these gîtes have been fitted out in novel penthouse style using a mix of stone,
wood, glass and metal. The lakeside gîte has been fitted out in a former barn, near
an island and private well-being centre. With a 160 sq.m living room and three
bedrooms, it can sleep up to 7 guests.
The dovecote gîte, sleeping 4 guests, has a medieval-style courtyard with

David Royer, upcoming talent in the 2016 Gault
& Millau
The chef at Les Orangeries in Lussac-Les-Châteaux near Poitiers, David Royer,
earned the Upcoming Talent 2016 Gault & Millau award in October 2015 alongside
25 others, including Loïck Vallet from Thiers Temps in La Rochelle and Luke
Dolphin from L’antre in Bidart. He earned a sensational 2 toques for his first rating
in the 2016 guide.
He also won the "Sustainable Restaurant Award", the first European restaurant to
receive this distinction. The "Les Orangeries" hotel was the first hotel in France to
earn the European Ecolabel in 2006. It initiated local sourcing, had its vegetable
and ornamental gardens certified organic and in 2011/2012 participated in a
national experiment for environmental labelling, which is now used in the COP21
climate–friendly menu label initiative.
This global approach to sustainable development has prompted Poitou chef
David Royer to serve cuisine sourced from the organic vegetable garden and
local farmers. He is exploring fare with veggie leanings, using top-quality, local,
organic produce, harnessing nature (hydrolates, flower water and edible flowers).

handy hints to use vegetables properly and save on energy.

The Kaïku* wins its first star
Nicolas Borombo is a talented, 30-something chef who cut his teeth at the
famous Crillon and Georges V restaurants in Paris. After a stint at the Grand Hôtel
in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, he decided to go it alone and made the Kaïku the most
famous restaurant in town. He mostly produces local, seasonal, surf-and-turf
specialities, prepared with an original twist.
His specialities include ravioles de txangurro (spider crab ravioli), clear coriander
and lemongrass soup, pearly hook-and-line fished croaker and squash with
preserved lemon. Hailing from Bayonne, he naturally crafts dishes with Basque
flavours, sourcing produce from the local fish market, regional livestock farmers
and vegetable growers like Jean-Luc Garbage who supplies seasonal vegetables
to many Michelin-starred restaurants. The authentic, inventive and tasty cuisine
was rewarded with a star in the 2015 Michelin Guide. The restaurant is located
in one of the oldest buildings in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, between the historic town
centre and the seafront.
Last October, Nicolas Borombo was elected to the "Talent of Tomorrow" category
in the 2016 Gault & Millau guide.

Located in a former 16th-century mill, the Moulin de la Gorce serves traditional
gastronomic fare with plenty of punch. The Chef, Pierre Bertranet, learned his
trade in Paris at the world-famous Maxim’s, Ritz and Drouant. His "intuition
