Last year the annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction was canceled due to the blizzard that took place in Kearney during the “Cattlemen’s Classic”. This year the weather was cooperative and Limousin breeders, their family and friends gathered for the annual event. The meal was served as the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney in conjunction with the “Cattlemen’s Classic”. Following the dinner, Limousin breeders went to the Country Inn and Suites, headquarters for the Nebraska Limousin Association, for dessert and the benefit auction. Annual Meeting Gerald Gustafson, president, welcomed everyone and gave a review of activities and sales in Nebraska that past year. Gwen Behrends, secretary/treasurer, gave a financial report. Mark Nutter of Thedford was elected to serve as the Nebraska representative on the Heartland Limousin Association board of directors. State Fair The Nebraska State Fair has a new 25,000 square foot exhibit titled “The Nebraska Agriculture Experience” in 2014. This is a collaborative effort between the state fair, the NE Department of Agriculture and the Natural Re- sources. “The focus of the experience is to provide visitors with an innovative, interactive view of where Nebraska agriculture is today and where it’s headed,” said Dr. Chuck Hibberd, dean of extension at the U of NE-Lincoln. “This will be a comprehensive look at food production in the state – and how NE is positioned for global leadership in feeding the word,” said Hibberd. The exhibit opens in time for the state fair; however, it will remain open year-round. Plan to stop and visit the exhibit when you are at the state fair for the Limousin Open show August 27. We hope to have a large contingent of breeders exhibit their cattle in the show as well as members in the stands watching. Vol. Cattle Feeding Nebraska has taken the lead and is the nation’s top state for cattle feeding. As of February 1, Nebraska had 2.46 million head of cattle on feed in feedlots above 1,000 head. Although these figures could fluctuate over the next year, there has been an overall positive trend for cattle feeding in Nebraska. Department of Agriculture Director Greg Ibach noted that there are many variables in the business of feeding cattle and Nebraska is a natural fit. “Nationally we are the second largest ethanol producer and third in corn production. We have nearly 23 million acres of range and pastureland, an excellent partnership with the University and a strong processing sector. These position Nebraska well for ongoing success,” he said. “We are the third largest agricultural state in the nation, and I don’t expect that to change,” Director Ibach said. “We also need to continue to encourage our young, beginning farmers and ranchers to get into the business of growing food.” 1/30/13 - Red - HOMO Polled - PB S: Wulfs Xtractor X223X D: WZRK Miss Nascar 8012U CE: 6 BW: 2.5 WW: 75 YW: 114 MA: 35 CM: 4 SC: 0.9 DC: 31 CW: 53 RE: .87 YG: -.15 MS: -.01 $MI: 53 ATLAS topped the 2014 Wieczorek bull sale.
