Dakota was named as the North American Limousin
Foundation (NALF) “Commercial Marketing Booster
of the Year”. This long-standing Limousin firm was
recognized at the annual banquet held January 13, 2014
at the Renaissance Hotel in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO. The award
recognizes a seedstock producer who has demonstrated
a strong commitment to commercial cattle producers.
Fourth generation cattlemen, Curt Wieczorek and
his wife, LeeAnn, along with Curt’s parent’s Wally
and Noreen, started using Limousin genetics back in
1974. In 1981 they held their first production sale and
have hosted one ever since. As a testament to their
total commitment to their customers, buyers from that
very first sale return each year to purchase Wieczorek
genetics.

Richard Fott of Hamel, South
Dakota was honored at the National Western Stock Show in Denver,
Colorado as the North American
Limousin Foundation (NALF)
“Commercial Producer of the
Year”. The award was presented to
Fott during the Limousin Pen and
Carload Show Thursday, January
16, 2014. Fott was selected from
a group of commercial producers
nominated by various state Limousin associations to receive the
coveted national “Commercial
Producer of the Year” award.

Richard Fott Named ...

Fott, Richard continues his father’s
crossbreeding program using
Limousin bulls on 800 head of
Hereford, Angus and black-white
face cattle.
They have been buying Limousin bulls since the 1970’s from
South Dakota, Minnesota and
Nebraska Limousin producers.
Their first bulls were purchased
from Pompadour Hills Limousin
of Highmore, SD.
Today, the herd has 50-75 percent Limousin x Angus crossed
cattle. The cows are naturally
serviced to calve in mid-April. Retained heifers are artificially bred
to calve during the same calving
window. All are born in a calving
pasture consisting of rolling hills
and creeks.
Fott accepts 85-95 pound birth
rates as they will be big enough to
withstand the cold weather. Sires
are selected for birth weight and
structure. Being a one-man operation, time management is critical.
A 45-60 day calving window is
important and unassisted calving
is necessary.
A rotational grazing system
based on seasonal growing is
used at the Fott ranch. All of his
pastures are native grass. Winter
forage consists of corn stalks and
unharvested hay ground. Late winter feeding is hay and cane silage
with some distiller’s grain that is
fed prior to calving.
The calves are weaned in late
November and sold to buyers notified by Fott two weeks in advance
of the sale at the Platte, SD Livestock Auction. They traditionally
have gone to the same feedlots.
In addition to the cattle, Fott
has a row crop operation of 400
acres to compliment the extensive
pasture and hay land. He usually
harvests silage off an additional
350 acres.
Muscle is the prime reason for
using Limousin genetics, according to Fott. His British based cow
herd and replacement females have
very little trouble calving and the
Limi-crossed calves have vigor at
birth. He believes in the Limousin
muscle, efficiency, and growth
advantages.

“Taking care of people and
making sure they are satisfied
has always been our number-one
goal,” Wally has been quoted as
saying time and time again.
Another signal of their commitment to their customers is the
personal service each customer
receives. Curt continues to personally deliver the cattle purchased
from the Wieczorek family.
“The extra time spent delivering
the cattle and visiting with the
people goes a long way in building
lasting relationships. Plus, you
also see their cows and learn the
kind of bulls they need,” Curt said.
In addition to free delivery
within 500 miles, sale bulls are
kept for buyers from their sale,
which is held on the last Friday
of February, until April 15 at no
charge and all bulls are unconditionally guaranteed through the
first breeding season.
“It has always been a pleasure
to work with a family operation
that closely watches all sides from
breeding, to birth, to management,
to marketing,” said long-time sale
consultant Mark Smith. “They
truly have their customer’s best
interest in mind.”
Other personal touches from
the Wieczorek family include
homemade Christmas cookies for
many of their customers; bidding
and buying customers calves,
mostly for the all-natural market;
and only requiring half-payment
sale day with the remainder due
upon delivery.
In fact, many years ago when
the commercial cattle market was
particularly tough, Wally stood
up on sale day and told the buyers
in attendance that he knew they
needed good bulls. He gave them
the option to pay as much as they
could that day and then pay the
remainder when their calves were
sold.
The Wieczorek family also
has a large farming operation in
the heart of pheasant country,
where they host pheasant hunters
and Curt is known for his quality
hunting dogs.

Advertisement and marketing

continue to strive to make sure
that the advertising and marketing
geniuses are accurate. I like the
taste and tenderness of Limousin
beef. I do not like to throw away
a large percentage of waste fat that
I have paid for. As long as we still
have a choice in America of what
to buy, I will continue to buy lean
and tender Limousin meat.

It seems as though everyone is
talking about the weather. This
winter takes me back to my younger years, or maybe because I was
so young the snow seemed to be
deeper and the temperatures colder
than they’ve been in the past few
years. This year really is a what we
call a “typical” Minnesota winter.
According to the National
Weather Service and the Minneapolis/St. Paul newspapers, we’ve
had 33 days in December and January with zero degrees or colder.
That is the most since the winter
of 1981-82. We have experienced
spinouts due to black ice and
numerous crashes, snow-covered
furnace vents that have caused
illness, schools that have been
closed a record number of days
due to the cold weather, and a record-breaking number of frostbite
case at local hospitals.
Dean and I came home December 30 after a wonderful trip
to Florida and South Carolina. It
was 81 degrees when the plane
left Orlando. When we arrived
home, we discovered that neither
car would start, we had no water
Recipe of the Month
I have made several variations of the Layered Pudding Dessert,
using different flavors of puddings. ~ Bev Summerbell
Pumpkin Pudding Dessert
First Layer
1 cup flour
2 T. sugar
1 stick oleo
½ to ¾ cup finely-chopped pecans
*Mix ingredients and press into 9x13-inch greased pan.
*Bake at 350 for approximately 10 minutes – let cool.
Second Layer
8 oz. cream cheese, softened at room temperature
2/3 cup powdered sugar
1 small container Cool Whip (or ½ of large container)
*Beat these ingredients together and spread over first layer (after
it has cooled a little).
Third Layer
2 regular-size packages vanilla instant pudding
1 (20 oz.) can canned pumpkin
2 cups cold milk
*Mix together and spread over the second layer.
Fourth Layer
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Small container Cool Whip (or remaining ½ large container)
Chopped pecans (optional)
*Mix cinnamon and Cool Whip, spread over layers and top with
pecans.
*Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Palmer Ivy, daughter of Adam and
Michelle Nielson of Arlington, SD was
born October 9, 2013. She weighed 7
lbs. 7 oz. and was 18.5 in. long. Big

Meek of Paola, KS as he recovers
from his second knee surgery in the
past few months. He said if he had
his knee done first, he never would
have had the other one done.
Our thoughts are with Ed Bergler, Cripple Creek Cattle Co of
Dakota, MN who is undergoing
physical therapy for severe back
pain. His next step is surgery if
this does not work. Good luck!
We are also thinking about Mike
Christie of Baldwin City, KS as he
continues his treatments. We wish
him the best!
Good luck to Tom and Rosalie
Smith of Smithton, MO, long-time
Limousin breeders and pioneers in
the Missouri Limousin Breeders
Association. They have sold their
farm and moved into Sedalia, MO.
We hope they are happy in their
new home.
Our sympathy is extended to
the family of Ben Price of Reading, KS. Ben was a pioneer in the
Kansas Limousin Association and
held the NALF founding #12 in
the organization of the Limousin
breed. He passed away January
26 in Emporia, KS. His obituary
is on the Kansas news page of the
Heart Beat.
We also extend our sympathy
to the family of Donna (Bies)
Klapperich of Rapid City, SD.
She passed away February 6, 2014.

were united in marriage May 25,

Annual Banquet & Sale to be
Held in Lebanon
Members of the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association will
hold their annual meeting, banquet, benefit auction and sale the
weekend of April 12-13, 2014.
The festivities begin on Saturday
night with the banquet and benefit
auction, which will be held on the
Laclede County Fairgrounds in
Lebanon. This will take place in
conjunction with the “Great American Pie Sale” to be held the next
day at the fairgrounds.
The social will begin at 5:00
p.m. followed by the meal at 6:00
p.m. There will be a silent auction,
live auction and raffle.
Members of the Missouri Junior
Limousin Association will also
hold their meeting Saturday, April
12. There will be an election of
officers, discussion on the field day
and planning for those traveling
to Amarillo for the NALJA show
in July.

The Pen & Carload Show Thursday, January 16, 2014 wrapped up
the Limousin events at the NWSS in Denver. Sixteen exhibitors brought
23 pens and six carloads of bulls for judges Lance Sennett of Waynetown, IN; Dr. Dave Nichols of Manhattan, KS; and Gary Giacomini of
Bishop, CA to evaluate.
The grand champion Lim-Flex pen, also exhibited by Magness, was another
group of March 2013 bulls with an average weight of 1,085 lbs. and an average
WDA of 3.88 lbs.
Magness Land & Cattle of Platteville, CO had a great day as they took home the
grand champion Pen of Three with their 2012 fall bulls. They had an average
weight of 1,667 lbs. and an average weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.47 lbs.
They also had the grand champion Lim-Flex pen and they swept the
Carload Show, taking both grand and reserve grand champion honors.
The Lim-Flex reserve grand champion Pen of Three went to Hager Cattle Co.
of Karlsruhe, ND with a pen of January 2012 bulls. This pen had an average
weight of 1,280 lbs. and an average WDA of 3.89 lbs.
The reserve grand champion Pen of Three and” People Choice” selection from
those watching the show was the Pen of Three March 2013 bulls exhibited by
Symens Brothers of Amherst, SD. They had an average weight of 930 lbs. and
an average WDA of 3.46 lbs.

Ron and the late Carolyn Holland of Vassar, KS were pioneers
in the Limousin breed. Education and cattle were both very
important to them, and they have
generously donated money to be
set up in a scholarship fund for the
juniors. Ron was elected to the
NALF board of directors in 1984
and again in 1987. He served again
in 1996 and 1999. Ron was inducted into the Kansas State Fair “Wall
of Fame” in 2012, serving for 12
years as Beef Superintendent. His
wife, Carolyn, was a leader and
officer in the “Limouselles” (now
known as the Limi Boosters).
Carolyn passed away in August
of 2011 and in the fall of 2012 Ron
sold the farm and moved to Wichita, KS. We thank the Holland
family for their generous donation.

Nancy of Eureka, Kansas received
the Kansas Bankers Association
Grasslands Award in January. This
award honors the family agricultural business that has been vital in
Wilson County since 1912.
The property originally belonged to the Gibson family. Dee
Anna (Gibson) Corns and her sister
grew up on the home place. In
1998, following the death of their
mother, her son and daughter-inlaw, Randy and Nancy along with
their two daughters, Randee and
Ashlee, moved there. At one time
the property was utilized for planting corn. Today the Corns have
changed their business to raising
Limousin cattle and to creating
pastures that are optimal for strong
cattle production.
Randy is the Eureka school
district superintendent and he is
also the president of the Kansas
Limousin Breeders Association.
Their daughter, Randee, is serving
as a member of the NALJA board
of directors.
In 2012 the Corns family participated in the Wilson County

allows the grassland/pasture to

Cattle are grazed at a stocking
rate that will maintain or improve
the quality and quantity of desirable vegetation. The watering
facility provides livestock and/or
wildlife access to water. Good
family business planning and visionary care of natural resources,
such as that done by the Corns
family, keeps Wilson County in
the business of feeding the nation.

Cole Siems Receives Boyer Scholarship
Cole Siems of DeWitt, NE was
the recipient of a $500 scholarship
awarded by Jay and Carol Boyer
of Liberty, NE. This scholarship
is given to a young person who has
a background in Limousin cattle.
He showed cattle at the county
fair, the Syracuse Progress Show,
and the York-Hamilton County
Progress Show. He took top honors with his Limousin heifer at the
county fair and had a class winner
at the progress shows. The LimFlex heifer that Cole exhibited was
sired by Styles Upgrade J59 out of
JTBO 02X.
The Boyer family has been in
the Limousin business for many
years. Albert, Jay’s father, started
raising Limousin cattle in 1974.
His wife, Dora, was a teacher in
Kansas ...
In Memoriam
Ben Price
Ben Price, Jr., 89, passed away
January 26, 2014 in Emporia, Kansas. He was a lifetime farmer and
rancher. Services were held February 1, 2014 at the Reading United
Methodist Church in Reading, KS.
Ben was the president of the
Reading State Bank and he was
a lifetime member of the Kansas
Livestock Association. Both Ben
and his wife, Ruth were founding
members of the North American
Limousin Foundation (NALF)
and the Kansas Limousin Breeders
Association.
In June of 1968 Ben joined

He is survived by his daughter,
Cynthia Wilson of Reading; two
sons, Brian (Angie) of Garden
City, KS and Bruce (Tamla) of
Reading, nine grandchildren and
thirteen great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his wife,
Edith Ruth, his parents and brother, Robert.

Washing Raw Meat May Do
More Harm Than Good
We wash our clothes to get them
clean. We wash dishes to get them
clean. So it would be logical for
people to think washing meat and
poultry should make it safer to eat.
Despite widespread belief in this,
washing raw poultry, beef, pork,
lamb or veal is not a good idea.
Barbara Brown, Oklahoma
State University Cooperative Extension food specialist, said washing raw meat before cooking is not
a good idea because bacteria in the
raw meat and poultry juices can be
spread to other foods, utensils and
other kitchen surfaces.
“The secret is to get meat onto
the baking pan with the minimum
amount of human contact,” Brown
said. “Consumers believe by
washing the meat and poultry they
are removing bacteria that makes
the food unsafe. What they don’t
realize is some of the bacteria are
so tightly attached you couldn’t
remove them no matter how many
times you washed the meat. Keep
in mind cooking will take care of
those bacteria.”
However, there are some bacteria that are easily removed, but
the mist of the water can splash
the bacteria onto other kitchen
surfaces. Failure to clean these
contaminated areas can lead to
foodborne illness.
Brown said it is important to
wash your hands after handling
raw meat or poultry, or its packaging, so you avoid spreading the
bacteria to other foods or kitchen
surfaces.
“Wash your hands with warm
water and soap for at least 20
seconds before and after handling
raw meats.” She aid. “Wash countertops and sinks with hot, soapy
water. You can sanitize surfaces
with a solution of 1 tablespoon of
unscented, liquid chlorine bleach
per gallon of water.”
Brown also pointed out cooking
to the correct internal temperature
kills the bacteria.
“Be sure to use a food thermometer to ensure poultry and other
meat has reached a safe internal
temperature. All raw beef and veal
steaks, roasts and chops should
reach a minimum temperature of
145 degrees Fahrenheit,” she said.
“For safety and quality, allow meat
to rest for at least three minutes
before carving or consuming.”

Limousin Events Held in Rapid City
The Banquet was well attended in Rapid City.
The South Dakota Limousin
Association (SDLA) held their
annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction Thursday, February
6, 2014 at the Ramkota Hotel in
Rapid City. This event took place
in conjunction with the Black
Hills Stock Show. The Limousin
show and sale took place the next
day, February 7 at the Convention
Center.
A large crowd of seedstock and
commercial breeders from South
Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin
and Iowa, their families, friends
and other Limousin enthusiasts
gathered for the delicious prime
rib buffet dinner followed by the
meeting and benefit auction.
Tim Bernaud, SDLA secretary,
welcomed everyone and thanked
them for coming. Dean Summerbell, Executive Secretary of the
Heartland Limousin Association,
gave an overview of activities
from the previous year. He then
had the honor of presenting the
2014 “Commercial Producer of
the Year” award to Dale and Terri
McLellan of Lantry, SD.
The evening concluded with
the benefit auction. We appreciate
the service of Chisum Peterson for
once again serving as auctioneer

There was a wide variety of items
on the auction including framed
pictures, kid’s toys, caramel rolls
and apple pies, a Limousin crock,
Valentine’s baskets, jewelry, jackets, and advertising in various
cattle publications. In addition,
there were also straws of semen, a
semen collection and tubs.
Kiley McKinna had the final bid
of $275. He was quite surprised
when he opened the envelope and
found that he had almost doubled
his money. It was quite a night!
Thanks to everyone who donated items and those who purchased
items at this year’s benefit auction.

South Dakota.
In Memoriam
Donna (Bies) Klapperich
Donna Rae Klapperich, 49, of
Rapid City, South Dakota passed
away February 6, 2014 following
a battle with cancer. She is the
daughter Harold and Judy Bies of
Rapid, City, SD. Services were
held February 11 at St. Therese
Church-The Little Flower in Rapid
City.
She grew up in Rapid City and
she enjoyed showing livestock.
Donna was elected as the South
Dakota Limousin queen in 1984.
She worked for two years on a
cattle ranch near Hayes, SD. She
returned home to the family ranch
to fulfill her lifelong passion of
raising cattle.
In 1988 she married her husband, Dean and began raising their
family. Their children, Hannah
Rae and Taylor Dean, were active
in sports and 4-H. Donna’s first
priority was spending time with
her husband, children and family.
Her passion was being at the family ranch, tending to her Limousin/
Angus cattle, attending sporting
events for her children and nieces
and nephews, and doing volunteer
work.
Donna is survived by her husband, Dean; children Hannah
(Justin) Uhrig, son Taylor; parents
Harold and Judy Bies and four siblings, all of Rapid City, SD.

and place.

McLellan Ranch Named SD “Commercial Producer of the Year”
Dale McLellan of Lantry, SD
was named the 2014 “Commercial
Producer of the Year” by the South
Dakota Limousin Association.
Dale and his wife Terri accepted
the award that was presented at
the SD annual banquet in Rapid
City February 6, 2014. Also in
attendance at the banquet were
family members – their grandson,
Clate; son-in-law, Shane Farlee;
and nephew and his wife, Josh and
Morgan Newman.
The McLellan family has
ranched on the family ranch for 37
years. Dale, along with his brother
and son, farm over 2,000 acres of
corn, wheat, and sunflowers in addition to 1,500 acres of hay across
three counties.
The McLellan’s have used
Limousin bulls to breed their 600
Angus based cow herd since 1979.
Dale’s father and uncle purchased
a Limousin x Hereford 50 percent
bull from Kirby Briggs to produce
some black, brockel faced mother
cows. They then began to purchase
purebred bulls and have continued
with that program. They background their heifers but sell their
steer calves earlier.
They have sold their feeder
calves off the farm to Wulf Cattle
for the past six years. McLellan’s
have purchased bulls from Wulf
Cattle, Schott Limousin, and Hunt
Limousin .
Dale likes the hybrid vigor that
Limousin-crossed calves possess.
The calving ease, performance and
feed efficiency are high priorities
for their management program.
Dale’s commitment to Limousin
has withstood the terrible storm
that killed nearly 200 of their cows
and calves in October of 2013.
Although adversity hit the western
plains of South Dakota, several
ranchers attended the South Dako-
ta Limousin Association banquet
and congratulated the McLellan
family on their selection.

late 1970’s at the SD State Fair.
A Limousin breeder thought that
these French cattle would work
well on Jim’s herd of black whitefaced cows and he wanted to test
their performance. “I liked the
muscle, the calving ease, the disposition, and the maternal traits
in the Limousin cattle,” said Jim.
In 1982 they purchased some
purebred cows. The next March
they held their first bull sale in
McLaughlin. Six years ago they
moved it to the Mobridge Livestock Exchange.

The people behind the
cattle at Schott Limousn ranch take pride
in their product, but
they also take pride in
the relationships they
have made through
their business. They
sell bulls into neigh-
boring states of ND, MN, NE and
MT. Jim says that driving into
the buyer’s yard and delivering a
bull is a very important part of the
business.
They maintain an extensive
database on their herd. Jared has
a degree in computer science from
SD State University and has added
his knowledge of technology to
the ranch. Priscilla handles the
heat detection during AI season,
keeps the calving book, and in the
fall starts working on replacement
heifer data. A few years ago Jim
placed steers in the Beef 20/20
program at SDSU, which gave
producers an opportunity to follow
cattle through the processing phase
and determine profit or loss.
Jim says his priorities are simple; first is the quality of the cattle
they produce, second is the people
(customers and consumers), third
is the beef industry as a whole,
fourth is Schott Limousin, and fifth
is monetary. “Taking care of the
first four properly, with character,
and the fifth one will fall into
place,” he said. Jim went on to say
that he hopes when people drive
out of the ranch they will realize
the meaning of the word above the
main corral gate – People.

the South Dakota “Commercial Producer of the Year”. Dean Summerbell
presented the plaque to the McLellans at the South Dakota Limousin banquet
in Rapid City.

Treftz Limousin Holds Third Annual Production Sale
Treftz Limousin of Wetonka,
South Dakota held their third annual “Where Muscle Still Matters”
Limousin production sale Saturday,
February 8, 2014 at the Aberdeen
Livestock Sales in Aberdeen, SD.
The bulls were easy fleshing,
performance oriented and backed
by 30 years of selection. Over 60
percent of the bulls in the sale were
homozygous polled. Although the
winter of 2013/2014 will go down in

Commercial Producers Purchase Bulls at Sioux Falls Red Carpet
Sioux Empire Farm Show Red
Carpet Show and Sale was held
Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the
W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux
Falls, South Dakota. Nine Limousin breeders from Minnesota,
South Dakota and Wisconsin consigned 15 bulls and one female.
Weather was a major factor
affecting the sale-goers with high
winds and blowing snow which
created whiteout conditions the
day before the Limousin event.
Temperatures fell to below zero on
the day of the show and sale, thus
hampering the traditional crowd of
buyers who were trying to dig out
from the tough winter conditions.
However, commercial producers
who saw value in the bulls and
female that were offered at the sale
gathered to evaluate and bid on the
quality set of cattle.
John Symens and Jeff Keyes appreciated Jay Langdeau’s purchases of their
bulls at the Red Carpet Sale.
The grand champion female,
consigned by Bruner Limousin, was
Lady Brun 2309Z, a 2/28/12 red,
double polled daughter of Master
BRUN Captain 1458U out of
LADY BRUN 1851X bred to HUNT
Testament.
The sale order show was held in
the morning of the sale. Judge Neil
Pierson of Lake City, SD selected
SYES Worktime 252Z, a 5/6/12 red,
polled son of CHTT Work Time 4925W
out of Miss SYES Nightowl 152T
consigned by Symens Brothers of
Amherst, SD as the grand champion
bull.
Auctioneer Chisum Peterson
hammered the gavel to begin the late
afternoon sale.
Jay and Avanny Langdeau of Fort
Pierre, SD paid $5,750 for the right
to take home the grand champion
bull home consigned by Symens
Brothers.
Langdeau also purchased MRL
Zuckerman, a 10/7/12 red, polled

Liberty Ranch Holds Special Two-Day Sale
Liberty Ranch of Plainville,
Kansas held their first ever twoday sale at the Plainville Livestock
Auction February 7-8, 2014. Roger
Comeau, owner, and Mike Smith,
ranch manager with his wife Deb,
welcomed the crowd who gathered
to view and bid on the quality set of
cattle and horses. The females sold
on Friday and the bulls and horses
were auctioned off on Saturday.
The ranch was established 30
years ago by the Comeau family as
a registered seedstock producer of
Limousin cattle. It encompasses
over 20,000 acres of land and is
in the top ten ranches in terms of
registered Limousin and Lim-Flex
in the breed.
Topping the sale was MDCS
2139Z; a 3/14/12 double black,
double polled 25 percent Lim-Flex
25 son of MAGS Seymour out of
MDCS 70T. He was purchased by
Galen Peterson of Stockton, KS for
$10,000.
The second high-selling bull was
purchased by Damon Stauffer of
Arlington, KS for $9,000. RRDC

The Minnesota Junior Spring
Classic will be held the weekend
of April 12-14, 2014 at the Mower
County Fairgrounds in Austin.
The “Boot Camp will take place
Friday, April 12. Showmanship
will also b held that day, beginning
at 4:30 p.m. Please make note that
this is a “no fit” show. There will
be two rings, starting with juniors
and intermediates, finishing with
seniors. Exhibitors do not need to
wear their official JMSC t-shirt for
showmanship.

meeting Monday, January 13, 2014

State Sale and Banquet in

The Limousin Association of
Wisconsin will have a busy weekend March 1-2, 2014. The banquet
will be held at the Log Cabin in
Bangor Saturday, March 1. The

the delicious prime rib dinner at
