GEORGE SAPE
Dear Friends,
I want to welcome you to an extraordinary evening of wine and
food, at one of the greatest auction houses in the world. This
promises to be an eventful night, for many reasons, and I am
glad to be able to share it with you. But understand that this
unique event, in support of a truly unique institution, would
not have been possible without the participation and help from
many different sources.
First, I want to thank Jamie Ritchie, CEO and President of
Sotheby’s Wine Americas and Asia, and his staff for making
this evening possible, and in this venue. It is not often that we
are fortunate to have access to this institution, where one can
actually gain ownership of unique parts of civilization, whether
it is art, artifacts, or in this case an opportunity to experience
wine at its best.
I also want to thank Prince Robert of Luxembourg for his
contribution tonight of the wines of Domaine Clarence Dillon,
which includes the venerable Chateau Haut-Brion among
others. His generosity goes well beyond tonight’s wines, and
his role in helping to shape the Cité du Vin has been constant
and continuing. In the same vein, I want to thank all of the
other Chateaux owners whose extraordinary generosity to
support the Thomas Jefferson Auditorium through tonight’s
auction is a further reminder that the friendship between
France and the U.S. has many facets.
GEORGE SAPE
We also want to thank Chef Daniel Boulud, and Chefs Edouard Leroux, Aaron
Bludorn, and Ghaya Oliveira. No one in New York’s food world exemplifies the
Franco-American unity more than Chef Boulud, and the team of chefs tonight
from Restaurant Daniel and Café Boulud represent both French and American
talent resulting from his influence.
Finally I want to thank the Board of the American Friends of La Cité du Vin whose
support for the project has been crucial since the beginning, and whose continued
support is essential for the future of the Jefferson Auditorium.
This project started for me three years ago when the ground for the Cité had not
even been broken. When the idea of this world center for wine was presented to
me, it seemed only natural that the U.S. should participate. We settled on the
dedication of the auditorium as the best expression of our support, to recognize
the role that one of our Founding Fathers played in solidifying relations between
then a fledgling nation and an old world power, but also as the genesis of wine
entering the culture of this country. Thus we honor one of our Founding Fathers
by being “founding fathers and mothers” of a new venture dedicated to wine in all
of its larger implications – cultural, scientific, societal, and as a common thread in
the world community.
The support each of you gives tonight to this venture makes you part of it. The Cité
will open officially in June, and your role at the very start of the process here in the
U.S. is important on many levels. That said I hope you enjoy this evening. Wine is,
after all, about good feelings and friendship.
George Sape
American Friends of La Cité du Vin
President
JAMIE RITCHIE
Sotheby’s is delighted to host this special dinner and
benefit auction for the soon-to-be-opened Cité du Vin
in Bordeaux. The funds raised tonight will go towards
naming the auditorium the “Thomas Jefferson
Auditorium,” so the history, influence and growing
enjoyment of wine in America is immediately
represented to visitors through the name of our
country’s founder and a great wine lover.
Tonight’s lots have been created especially for this
auction and include exclusive visits to the greatest
properties in Bordeaux. Each was donated directly by
the individual Châteaux. The owners and winemakers all friends of both Sotheby’s and the Cité du Vin - are
extremely generous hosts and will surely make your
once-in-a-lifetime visit is one that you will never forget.
We are very grateful to Prince Robert de Luxembourg
and Domaine Clarence Dillon for generously donating
so many great wines for tonight’s dinner – we hope you
enjoy, and that the quality of your bids matches the
quality of the wines!

ALAIN JUPPÉ
In a little more than 1 month from now, on May 31st, I will be
inaugurating La Cité du Vin in Bordeaux.
La Cité will invite its 500,000 expected annual visitors to embark
on a journey through time and space to explore the cultures and
civilizations of wine.
The main mission of La Cité du Vin will be to enhance and
transmit to the largest possible audience the universal and
living heritage of wine, thanks to a strong focus on new
technologies, images but also on art.
La Cité du Vin will tell the story of the latest expression of the
unique ties that unite Bordeaux and the United States thanks to
wine. It will also give the opportunity to its visitors to discover
the unexpected aspects of this overseas culture, without
forgetting to taste its wines.
Since the very beginning of this project, strong supporting
American voices have been heard.
Over time, they have become the American Friends of La Cité
du Vin who now stand by our side advocating the idea that wine
is such a special and unique product, which has the power to
draw landscapes and bring men together.

1 JEROBOAM DE CHÂTEAU LATOUR 2011 (5L)
Blending: Cabernet Sauvignon: 84.5% ; Merlot: 15%; Petit Verdot: 0.5%
A beautiful bright, deep color. Fine, fruity, floral bouquet with lots of
freshness and impressive concentration. In the mouth, the wine is
very refined, rich, tight and smooth. The finish is deep and powerful,
with complex aromas. A clean, direct wine, fairly long on the palate,
which retains its freshness throughout tasting. 2011 belongs to the
classic vintages family.
LUNCH AT THE PROPERTY WITH FREDERIC ENGERER
PRESIDENT OF ARTÉMIS DOMAINES AND OF CHÂTEAU LATOUR
(FOR A TOTAL OF 4 GUESTS).
THE CHÂTEAU
Château Latour is situated in the heart of the Médoc wine region, about 50 km
north-west of Bordeaux, where the legend of the vineyards of Bordeaux began. The
Château’s prime terroir, l’Enclos, overlooks the estuary of the Gironde river which,
over the centuries, has given the vineyard its geological complexity and, on a daily
basis, ensure a mild climate.
In the years since 1993, under the leadership of François Pinault, the estate’s owner,
significant changes have been made with a view to maintaining Château Latour’s
pursuit of excellence in the wines that it produces.
The 90 hectares of the estate are locally managed by Frederic Engerer and his team.
The estate is planted with about 80% of Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% of Merlot and 2%
of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The Merlot plays a regulating role, tempering the strength of the dominant
Cabernet Sauvignon. It is mainly planted on the lower slopes of the hilltops in the
Enclos, where the layer of gravel are a little shallower and the clay limestone can
give its powerful, full-bodied, generous character.
The unique terroir of Château Latour was given “first growth” ranking in the official
1855 classification.
Starting price : $7,500
CHÂTEAU LATOUR
BORDEAUX EXPERIENCES AUCTION - LOT 6
1 DOUBLE MAGNUM CHÂTEAU CHEVAL BLANC 2009
Drought conditions in July and August contributed to making the
grapes more concentrated, while the mild temperatures in August
and September helped them reach excellent ripeness levels. Cool
nights in July, August and September preserved all the freshness and
aromatic complexity of the harvest. Put these three factors together
and you get a great vintage. When harvest time came, the ripeness of
the grapes was amazingly consistent, and they had great balance,
always the sign of a perfectly ripe crop.
Intense crimson color. The bouquet is very complex, with black fruit
and spice, liquorice and menthol scents. The sensation on the palate is
powerful and concentrated with the smoothest of tannins. A wine
boasting great length, outstanding balance and elegance.
PRIVATE VISIT AND A LUNCH FOR 6 GUESTS WITH PIERRE LURTON
THE CHÂTEAU
Created by accident or design, there are some truly exceptional wines around the
world. Cheval Blanc is one of them.
An alliance between a unique terroir and a symbiotic combination of the Cabernet
Franc and Merlot grape varieties, Château Cheval Blanc produces a wine with the
extremely rare quality of being good at any age. It is actually one of the most
consistent wines in the world.
This subtle association, this perfectly complementary quality, gives Cheval Blanc its
highly specific touch, that of power combined with elegance.
It is sometimes said that this wine is an example of absolute art.

HOSTELLERIE DE PLAISANCE.
THE CHÂTEAU
Château Pavie’s history goes back to Roman times. The first vines in Saint-Emilion
were planted on the slopes of Ausone and Pavie in the 4th century AD. The
outstanding quality of the terroir on the famous south-facing Côte de Pavie was
revealed over generations, and became widely-acknowledged by the mid-twentieth
century. Impressed by the estate’s history, geographical location, and terroir,
Gérard Perse acquired Château Pavie in 1998. He is responsible for the château’s
renaissance. Nothing deterred him from his goal of making Château Pavie one of
the very best wines in the appellation. Gérard Perse now shares this passion for
viticulture and winemaking with his daughter, Angélique, and her husband,
Henrique Da Costa. Château Pavie has 37 hectares of vines in a single block with

2 BOTTLES OF 75 CL CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1918
2 BOTTLES OF 75 CL CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1945
copyright : F.Poincet
For this very special auction, I wanted to put forward two very
exceptional vintages, symbolic of the relation between the United
States and France.
Having been conceived in France but born in New York as a refugee
from the German invasion of my country, I feel a particularly strong
link of gratitude to America. It is thanks to the help of the American
Army that the two world conflicts were won.
When the lucky acquirer of these wines will drink them, I hope he will
have in mind the sacrifice of so many of the “Boys” for the cause of
liberty. Baron Eric de Rothschild
THE CHÂTEAU
Lafite already existed as a medieval fief as early as the 14th century. In the
18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, at the head of the property, played a major role
in improving viticultural techniques and promoting Lafite in France and overseas.
In France, Lafite quickly became known as the “King’s wine”, introduced to the
Court of Versailles by Marshal de Richelieu.
Lafite was recognized as an outstanding wine as witnessed in the exceptional
writings of Thomas Jefferson, future President of the United States.
In 1855, the Official Classification that took place on the occasion of the Exposition
Universelle de Paris, recognized Lafite as “First of the Firsts”. This classification was
a historical milestone and is still relevant today.
On 8 August 1868, Baron James de Rothschild purchased Château Lafite.
Since then, five generations of Rothschild have followed one another at the head of
the Château. Baron Eric de Rothschild is now running the property since 1974
sharing a common goal over generations: up holding Lafite’s unique qualities of
charm and “drinkability”.

been home to vineyards for over four centuries. Since 1998, Château Haut-Bailly
has been under the ownership of Robert Wilmers, chairman of M&T Bank, and his
wife Elisabeth. The Château itself, built in the 19th century is at the highest point of
the property allowing for spectacular views of sunsets over century-old vines.
THE OWNER
Robert G. Wilmers acquired Château Haut-Bailly in 1998.
Born in the US, this Francophile American grew up in Belgium and studied at
Harvard. Since 1983, he has been C.E.O. of the M&T Bank Corporation in Buffalo,
New York. In 2011, Robert G. Wilmers was voted "Banker of the Year" by his peers.
His clients did not suffer as a result of the subprime crisis. He was awarded the
Legion of Honour in 2008.
Much appreciated for his extreme courtesy, intelligence, and inimitable humour,
"Bob" Wilmers lost no time in becoming a respected member of the small circle of
great château owners. He has done much to promote the fine wines of Bordeaux
around the world.
The year he became owner (1998), he instituted a number of improvements. Thanks

1 IMPERIAL (6 LITERS) OF 1995 PETRUS
« Unquestionably one of the vintage's superstars…
Forget all the nonsense about Merlot producing sweet, soft, ready to
drink wines, because low yielding, old Merlot vines made in the way of
Petrus (...) Frequently possess as much aging potential as any great
Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in the world(...)
Look for the 1995 Petrus to last for 50+ years. » Robert Parker
LUNCH FOR 2 AT THE MOUEIX FAMILY HOME PREPARED BY
3-STAR CHEF MICHEL GUÉRARD
DESCRIPTION OF PETRUS
Petrus is one of the most celebrated wines of Bordeaux and without contest the
most famous wine of Pomerol of which it is the supreme archetype. Two persons
are at the origin of the fame of this exceptional wine: Madame Loubat who
transformed its - until then - anonymous reputation, and Jean-Pierre Moueix who
made it into a great wine. Petrus has only one fault: the small size of its vineyard at
11,42 hectares or 28 acres. Added to the relatively advanced age of its vines and low
yields (the amount of grapes on the vine), that makes for only 30 000 bottles that
the entire world cries out for.
Starting price : $20,000

especially in February, followed by a very wet spring, then a very dry
summer before a return to rainy weather as of September 20th.
Château Margaux 2012 is “almost” a great vintage, ultimately not that
far removed from the 2010. It has more power, and the same purity,
balance and charm.
Château Margaux is proud and honored to contribute a
PRIVATE VISIT AND TASTING FOLLOWED BY A DINNER FOR 6/8
GUESTS AT THE PROPERTY HOSTED BY MRS CORINNE
MENTZELOPOULOS (CHÂTEAU MARGAUX’S OWNER AND CEO).
THE CHÂTEAU
Château Margaux has sought to achieve excellence in its wines for over 400 years
now through painstaking and necessarily long studies of its terroir, through a
constant desire to learn and innovate, by remaining sensitive to demanding
markets, and above all through a passionate commitment that has been shared by
the families that have succeeded each other at the estate. Today Corinne
Mentzelopoulos, supported by her team, and following in her father’s footsteps,
devotes her time and energy to radiating her enthusiasm for this wine, whose name
is synonymous with greatness, balance and harmony.

CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 2009: A NEW MASTERPIECE
1 DOUBLE MAGNUM CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 2009
2009 is a vintage that benefited from extraordinarily favorable
conditions for six months in a row. However, this vintage will also be
long-remembered because Botrytis was all-pervasive. This was a
dream vintage where the only challenge was avoiding excessive
sweetness in the grapes. 2009 can undoubtedly be considered a great
Yquem, a combination of perfect ripeness... and splendid Botrytis
cinerea. This fabulous wine is one of the great vintages of Yquem!
PRIVATE VISIT AND A LUNCH FOR 6 WITH PIERRE LURTON
THE CHÂTEAU
Château d'Yquem dating from the 15th century, famous since the Age of
Enlightenment, sits atop a rise overlooking the Sauternes region, forty kilometres
southeast of Bordeaux.
The wine of Château d'Yquem is somewhat of a miracle. It is due to the
serendipitous fusion of a unique terroir, the expertise and unstinting efforts of men
and women in the vineyard and cellar, and a microscopic fungus, Botrytis cinerea.
In 1999, the L.V.M.H group (Moët Hennessy - Louis Vuitton) became majority
shareholders of this truly unique estate listed as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855
classification. Château d'Yquem's philosophy has been the same for over 5
centuries: to do everything possible to produce – nature permitting – an excellent
wine, with yields of just one glass per vine.
THE CEO
At the age of 23, he took over management of Clos Fourtet, a Saint-Émilion Premier
Grand Cru Classé belonging to the Lurton family. At the age of 34, Pierre Lurton was
appointed Managing Director of Château Cheval Blanc, a Saint-Emilion Premier
Grand Cru Classé A belonging at the time to the Fourcault-Laussac family. On 2004,
Pierre Lurton was appointed CEO of Château d'Yquem, a Premier Cru Supérieur in
the 1855 classification, by Bernard Arnault and the LVMH group.

In a context made special by the exceptional fact of a year with triple

a capricious weather.
While in its youth, it showed mainly notes of roasted fruit and sweet
spices, the wine has taken today a full body. Soft and fresh, it offers a
beautiful aromatic expression, in a pleasant balance.
THE CHÂTEAU
Convinced of having in his hands an exceptional terroir, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel,
