In February 2007, Grove City College inducted men’s soccer standout Frank Sbrocco (left) into its Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the inaugural class. In 1956, Sbrocco became the first Grove City athlete to earn All-America honors. Sbrocco is pictured with Grove City College President Dr. Richard Jewell. 2 MEN’S SOCCER 2007 HEAD COACH MIKE DREVES 3 COACHING STAFF Mike Dreves is in his second season as Grove City College’s head men’s soccer coach. In his first season as head coach, Dreves directed the Wolverines to an 11-7-2 overall record, including a 4-2 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play. Grove City advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament semifinals in 2006 after upsetting top-seeded Swarthmore in the quarterfinals. A 1997 Grove City College graduate, Dreves took over as head coach in June 2006 after serving as an assistant coach for five seasons under retired head coach Dr. Don Lyle. As an assistant coach, he helped the Wolverines post four winning seasons, an average of 11 wins per season and two postseason berths. In 2005, Grove City captured its first-ever Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament title with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Washington & Jefferson Nov. 5. The Wolverines advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament finals and finished 2005 with a 13-6-5 record. Dreves earned four letters as a player at Grove City from 1993-96. He was a two-year team captain and helped lead the Wolverines to the 1996 PAC and ECAC titles. The 1996 team earned the program’s first PAC title and also posted a program-record 16 victories. Dreves’ coaching career began at the scholastic level. He guided the Titusville (Pa.) High School boys’ soccer program from 1997-2000, directing the Rockets to 39 wins and one Tri-County Athletic Conference championship (1998) in four seasons. He then joined the Grove City coaching staff prior to the start of the 2001 season and helped the Wolverines reach the ECAC Tournament twice. Dreves graduated from Grove City in May 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/secondary education. He then earned his master’s degree in exercise science at nearby Slippery Rock University. He taught mathematics at both Titusville (1997-2001) and Mercer (2001-06) High Schools before coming to the College. Dreves joined the Grove City athletic department on a full-time basis in June 2006 as an assistant professor of physical education and as Fitness Room Coordinator. Dreves lives in Pine Township with his wife Sue (also a 1997 Grove City graduate) and their two sons, Joshua and Mike Dreves is in his second year as Grove City’s men’s soccer coach. In 2006, he directed the Wolverines to an 11-7-2 overall record. Isaac. GROVE CITY COLLEGE 2007 SEASON PREVIEW SEASON PREVIEW Wolverines Counting On Veterans, Youth In Quest For PAC Crown There are two construction projects related to the men’s soccer program at Grove City College as the 2007 season approaches. One is a major renovation. The other is more along the lines of a remodeling project. Fortunately for the Wolverines, it is their home field -- College Field -- that is undergoing the major renovations. While College Field will now feature a new press box and scoreboard in 2007, the team that calls the facility home will also have a different look this fall. Grove City must replace five starters from last year’s 11-win team that advanced to the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament semifinals. Among the graduated are the program’s alltime leading scorer (Bob McNees), two four-year starters at defender (Brendan McCommas and Stuart McCommas), a pair of veteran midfielders (Jonathan Breese and Jonathan Mahtani) and the College’s 2007 Senior Man of the Year, Ian Lamborn. Junior defender Jack Adams helped Grove City post nine shutouts during the 2006 season. Adams is a returning All-PAC selection. However, the Wolverines are still well-stocked as they prepare to challenge for the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the postseason. Second-year head coach Mike Dreves welcomes back 10 lettermen in 2007, including six fulltime starters. Three of those starters helped form the core of one of the region’s top defenses. Senior stopper Tommy Bresson enters his fourth year as a starter while senior goalkeeper Michael Manahan is a two-year starter. Junior sweeper Jack Adams is a two-year letterwinner who started 19 of 20 matches last year. In his three years as a starter, Bresson has helped Grove City post 30 shutouts and an aggregate 0.89 goals-against average. He earned Second Team All-PAC honors in 2006. Manahan is a two-time Second Team All-PAC selection in goal for Grove City. He led the conference in save percentage in both 2005 and 2006. Adams also landed on the conference’s Second Team following the 2006 season. Senior Tommy Bresson has started 64 consecutive matches since arriving at Grove City in 2004. He earned Second Team All-PAC last year. 4 MEN’S SOCCER 2007 2007 SEASON PREVIEW Grove City Seeks 5th Straight Winning Season, Return to Postseason Senior midfielder Barry Snyder started all 20 matches for Grove City in 2006. Grove City also welcomes back senior defender Dustin Heath, who earned his first letter in 2006. Heath made five starts at outside back, helping the Wolverines to a 4-1 record in those five matches. Senior midfielders Chad Ashby and Barry Snyder return after strong junior seasons. Ashby led the team with five assists from his wing position while Snyder started all 20 matches. Junior Matt Sol made 13 starts during the 2006 season, including all three postseason matches. Junior forward Tyler Ferrier appeared in all 20 matches as a reserve last season and provided instant offense for the Wolverines. Ferrier finished second on the team in goals (4), assists (3) and total points (11). He will again be counted on for offensive production this season. Senior Eli Lamborn has made nine career starts and is a three-year letterman. He will contend for a full-time starting spot this season. Junior defender Bob Terhune missed much of 2006 due to an injury. He played in 12 matches at Senior goalkeeper Michael Manahan earned AllPAC Second Team in 2005 and 2006. 5 SEASON PREVIEW stopper as a freshman and will be an integral part of the Grove City defense again in 2007. Several other veterans are also expected to challenge for playing time this fall. Junior forward Andrew Yackel will challenge for a spot up front while junior Ben Kristobak is in the mix at defender. A number of sophomores are back after seeing spot duty as freshmen. Defenders Scott Degelman, Sean Osborne and Mike Soriano return, as do midfielders Ryan Lesser and Joel Metz. Lesser had two assists in 2006 while Metz scored twice in limited action. Sophomore Tim Lansing is Manahan’s backup in goal. Lansing did not allow a goal in his two appearances last year. Grove City will open the 2007 season August 31 against visiting Penn State Altoona. Presidents’ Athletic Conference play begins Sept. 29 at Bethany. The non-conference schedule features a trip to Grantham, Pa. for the Messiah College Classic Sept. 7-8. The Wolverines will face Goucher and national power Messiah during the two-day event. Grove City will also play Baldwin-Wallace, Carnegie Mellon and Lake Erie in preparation for the conference schedule. Comprised of 10 select private colleges Bethany College, Chatham College, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg College and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham College, Geneva College and Saint Vincent College all joined the PAC. Chatham will compete for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007- PAC GROVE CITY COLLEGE 2006 IN REVIEW 2006 IN REVIEW Grove City Advances To ECAC Southern Tournament Semifinals Calendar years ending in the number six have been traditionally bountiful for the Grove City College men’s soccer program. Grove City’s 1956 squad went 7-0-0 while the 1966 team posted a 71-1 record. Grove City celebrated the nation’s bicentennial in 1976 by advancing to the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals with a 10-3-1 mark. The 1986 team went 11-2-1 while the 1996 team won the ECAC Southern Championship with a 16-2 record. That history of excellence continued in 2006 as Grove City recorded an 11-win season and advanced to the semifinal round of the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament. Under first-year head coach Mike Dreves, the Wolverines opened 2006 with seven consecutive home matches. Following a season-opening setback against Medaille Sept. 1, the Wolverines notched three straight victories at College Field. Senior Bob McNees became Grove City’s alltime leading goal-scorer Sept. 2 in a 3-0 victory over visiting Pitt-Bradford. McNees scored all three Grove City goals on second-half penalty kicks in becoming the program’s most prolific scorer. McNees’ three goals in the win gave him 49 career goals, surpassing the long-standing mark of 48, set by Ross Emerson in the mid-1950s. The victory over Pitt-Bradford also represented Dreves’ first victory as head coach. It was also the Wolverines’ 50th shutout this decade. Grove City’s defense continued to shine over the next seven days as the Wolverines earned a pair of shutout victories. An overtime goal by McNees in the 98th minute Sept. 6 lifted Grove City to a 1-0 home win over La Roche in non-conference action. Senior Ian Lamborn assisted on the game-winner while in goal, Manahan stopped 10 La Roche shots. Three days later, the Wolverines’ win streak reached three as Grove City blanked Waynesburg, 2-0. McNees scored a pair of unassisted goals while the Grove City defense limited Waynesburg to just one second-half shot and no corner kicks. Longtime non-conference rival Carnegie Mellon ended Grove CIty’s win streak Sept. 12 by pulling out a 2-0 victory at College Field. Grove City concluded the lengthy homestand by splitting back-to-back non-conference matches. Grove City improved to 4-2 Sept. 16 with a 2-0 victory over Geneva. The homestand ended on a down note, though, as Penn State Behrend picked up a 2-0 victory at Grove City Sept. 20. Following a 10-day layoff that included a weather postponement, Grove City raised its over- all record to 6-3-1 by going undefeated in its first three road matches. Senior defender Brendan McCommas and Lamborn both scored their first goal of the season in a 2-1 victory at Thomas More Sept. 30. McCommas scored in the fifth minute off Chad Ashby’s corner kick while Lamborn’s first career goal at 61:36 gave Grove City a 2-0 lead. Three nights later, the Wolverines battled host Washington & Jefferson to a scoreless draw. Manahan preserved Grove City’s fifth shutout of the season by making five saves. Defensively, Grove City limited W&J to just seven total shots. Grove City opened conference play Oct. 7 with a 4-0 triumph over Waynesburg. The Wolverines broke the match open with three second-half goals. McNees scored twice while senior midfielder Jonathan Breese and freshman Joel Metz also scored. McNees earned his third PAC Offensive Player of the Week award while Manahan earned the conference’s Goalkeeper/Defensive Player of the Week award Oct. 8. Bob McNees earned PAC Player of the Year honors in both 2005 and 2006. He graduated as Grove City’s all-time leading scorer with 63 goals. 10 MEN’S SOCCER 2007 2006 IN REVIEW Wolverines Record 4th Straight Winning Season, Post 9 Shutouts 1-0 lead. Ferrier assisted goals by sophomore Matt Sol and McNees while an “own goal” capped the scoring. Grove City’s bid for a second straight league crown ended in the PAC semifinals, however, as Westminster eliminated the Wolverines, 3-0. Still, Grove City’s 11-6-1 overall record earned the team an invitation to the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament. The Wolverines earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament and faced top-seeded Swarthmore in the quarterfinals Nov. 8. Grove City fell behind in the fifth minute but tied the match at 26:19 as Ferrier scored off a Breese assist. Defensively, the Wolverines blanked Swarthmore through two overtime periods, sending the match into a shootout. In the shootout, McNees, Ferrier and Brendan McCommas all scored, giving Grove City a 3-1 lead. Manahan stopped Swarthmore’s fourth shootout attempt, sending the Wolverines to the semifinals. Three days later at Carnegie Mellon, fifth-seeded Gettysburg scored twice in the second half on its way to a 2-0 semifinal-round win over Grove City. McNees earned PAC Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. Both Breese and McNees earned First Team All-PAC honors. The setback against Bethany ultimately proved to be Grove City’s final loss of the regular season. A convincing 4-1 win at Saint Vincent Oct. 18 ignited a season-ending five-match win streak. McNees posted two goals and an assist at Saint Vincent while Ashby added a goal and an assist. Ferrier scored off junior Barry Snyder’s assist. Three days later, Ferrier broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute as Grove City rolled to a 2-0 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson. Mahtani sealed the win with a goal at 72:53 while the defense posted its seventh shutout of 2006. Grove City improved to 3-2 in the PAC by scoring a season-high six goals Oct. 24 en route to a 6-0 home win over Thiel. McNees notched a hat trick while Metz, Snyder and Ben Kristobak all scored once. The Wolverines extended the win streak to four Oct. 26 by pulling out a 2-1 overtime victory at Lake Erie. Ferrier tied the match with a goal in the 32nd minute while McNees scored the game winner 6:28 into the first overtime. Grove City then wrapped up the regular season with a 4-0 win over Thomas More on Senior Day Oct. 28. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a notebook computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. THE COLLEGE PROGRAMS AND MAJORS Grove City College’s Breen Student Union This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum. The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. During the summer of 2006, the College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. Lights were also added at Robert E. Thorn Field while the 8-lane track around the field was resurfaced. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex will now be used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. Several upgrades to the facility were recently made. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. The 1,800-seat Arena recently received new scoreboards, new scorer’s tables and new shotclocks. Grove City College installed CSTurf, lights and new track and field competition areas at Robert E. Thorn Field in summer 2006. The Grove City College Pool is one of the nation’s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo. 15 ATHLETIC FACILITIES In addition, the PLC features the Grove City College Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-theart facility. In 2008, the Pool will host the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Championships. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic, Cybex and free weight equipment is an integral part of the PLC. Expansion of the fitness room is a keystone of the Center’s ongoing renovations. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. New synthetic floors were installed in the intramural rooms in summer 2006. The building houses an athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. In 2004, the College constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities received major facelifts in 2007 with new fencing and electronic scoreboards scheduled to be installed for the 2007-08 academic year.
