HEAD COACH MIKE DREVES
3
COACHING STAFF
Mike Dreves begins his third season as Grove City College’s head men’s
soccer coach. In his first two seasons at the helm, Dreves has guided Grove City
to a 17-15-6 overall record.
In 2006 -- his first season as head coach -- Grove City advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament semifinals
after upsetting top-seeded Swarthmore in the quarterfinals.
Last season, Dreves guided a youth-laden squad to within a half-game of the
Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. Grove City closed
the 2007 season with victories over rivals Geneva and Thiel.
A 1997 Grove City College graduate, Dreves took over as head coach in June
2006 after serving as an assistant coach for five seasons under retired head
coach Dr. Don Lyle.
As an assistant coach, he helped the Wolverines post four winning seasons,
an average of 11 wins per season and two postseason berths.
In 2005, Grove City captured its first-ever Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament
title with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Washington & Jefferson. The Wolverines advanced to the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament finals and finished the season with a 136-5 record.
Dreves earned four letters as a player at Grove City from 1993-96. He captained both the 1995 and 1996
teams and helped lead the Wolverines to PAC and ECAC titles as a senior. The 1996 team earned the
program’s first PAC title and also posted a program-record 16 victories.
Dreves’ coaching career began at the scholastic level. He guided the Titusville (Pa.) High School boys’
soccer program from 1997-2000, directing the Rockets to 39 wins and one Tri-County Athletic Conference
championship (1998) in four seasons.
He then joined the Grove City coaching staff prior to the start of the 2001 season and helped the
Wolverines reach the ECAC
Tournament twice.
Dreves graduated from
Grove City in May 1997 with
a bachelor’s degree in mathematics/secondary education.
He earned his master’s
degree in exercise science at
Slippery Rock University in
2006.
Dreves joined the Grove
City athletic department on
a full-time basis in June 2006
as an assistant professor of
physical education and as Fitness Room Coordinator.
He taught mathematics
at both Titusville (1997-2001)
and Mercer (2001-06) High
Schools before coming to
the College.
He lives in Pine Township
with his wife Sue (also a 1997
Grove City graduate) and
Mike Dreves is in his third year as Grove City’s men’s soccer coach. He
their two sons, Joshua and
is the sixth head coach in Grove City men’s soccer history.
Isaac.
GROVE CITY COLLEGE
2008 SEASON PREVIEW
SEASON PREVIEW
Wolverines Aiming For Third Postseason Berth In Four Years
As a rule, the terms “young” and “experienced”
are rarely used together when describing a sports
team. An exception will be made for the 2008 Grove
City College men’s soccer team, however.
After fielding an extremely youthful squad in
2007, the Wolverines will still be rather young in
2008 as numerous underclassmen are expected
to fill critical roles.
However, the experiences gained last year – a
season in which Grove City came within a whisker
of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament – should prove beneficial to the
2008 squad.
Grove City returns a dozen lettermen this fall,
including 11 players who started multiple matches
in 2007.
The Wolverines, under the direction of thirdyear head coach Mike Dreves, will rely on a fiveman senior class in their quest for a third
postseason berth in the last four years.
Senior Bob Terhune is a returning starter at
outside back for Grove City. Terhune started
all 18 matches in 2007.
For the better part of the program’s 70-year
history, the Grove City men’s soccer squad has
relied on iron-clad defense. That will again be the
case in 2008 as the Wolverines return three starters along the back line.
Senior backs Jack Adams and Bob Terhune
both started all 18 matches in 2007 and again will
help anchor the Grove City defense.
Adams is a two-time All-PAC selection at center back while Terhune is a stalwart at outside back.
Sophomore Dave Larkin moved into the starting lineup at outside back during his rookie season and will challenge for a starting post again this
year.
Senior Ben Kristobak, junior Sean Osborne (four
starts in 2007) and sophomore Evan Harding (two
starts) will all compete for full-time starting spots
this year.
Junior Joel Metz will also battle for a starting
assignment after moving from midfield to defender
in the offseason.
In goal, junior Tim Lansing played in four
matches last season, including one start. He owns
Senior defender Jack Adams is a two-year
starter at center back for Grove City. Adams is
a two-time All-PAC selection.

2008 SEASON PREVIEW
Five Seniors, Dozen Lettermen To Lead Grove City In 2008
Sophomore Evan Moore made 17 appearances
as a freshman in 2007. Moore will compete for
a full-time starting post this season.
a 2-0 record and an 0.77 goals-against average as
a reserve. Lansing is the only experienced goalkeeper on the Wolverines’ preseason roster.
Grove City also returns a pair of seniors at the
midfield positions in Paul Cardinal and Matt Sol.
Cardinal made an immediate impact in his first year
in the program by starting the 2007 season
opener.
Sol, meanwhile, has been one of Grove City’s
most consistent performers over the past three
seasons. He will be counted on for leadership at
both ends of the field this season.
Sophomores Erich Beyer, Evan Moore and
Chuck Witt all played extensively as freshmen in
2007 and will compete for starting spots at midfield
this season.
Fellow sophomores Zach Barzanty and Alex
Ford are also looking to break into the lineup this
season.
Grove City will look to senior forward Tyler
Ferrier for offensive production in 2008. Ferrier
recorded four goals as a sophomore in 2006.
5
SEASON PREVIEW
At forward, Grove City returns a pair of offensive dynamos in senior Tyler Ferrier and sophomore Jake Kern.
Ferrier is looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued junior season. He scored once in his
two starts last year after racking up four goals and
three assists as a sophomore in 2006.
Kern led Grove City in scoring in 2007 with six
goals in 17 games. He capped his rookie season
by earning Second Team All-PAC recognition.
Sophomores Austin Bernal and Daniel Bernal
are looking to challenge for time up front for Grove
City.
Grove City will be tested frequently throughout the 2008 season by one of the most rugged
schedules in program history.
In addition to the challenging conference slate,
the Wolverines will also face national power Messiah along with regional powers Baldwin-Wallace,
Carnegie Mellon, Ohio Wesleyan and Penn State
Altoona.
Grove City opens the 2008 season August 29
against visiting Point Park. Presidents’ Athletic Conference play begins October 4 against Thiel.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular season November 1 against archrival Geneva College
at 12 p.m.

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.
Comprised of 10 select private institutions Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel
College, Thomas More College, Washington &
Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and
Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique
organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics.
With academics at the center of each member’s
philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that
an athletic program is a part of college life, but not
an entity in itself.
During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham
College, Geneva College and Saint Vincent College
all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC
championships for the first time during the 2007-

Grove City Wraps Up 2007 Season With Strong Finish
After back-to-back postseason appearances,
and four consecutive winning seasons, the Grove
City College men’s soccer team posted a 6-8-4
overall record in 2007.
At face value, that record may seem rather pedestrian. However, those three integers are hardly
indicative of Grove City’s 68th season of intercollegiate men’s soccer.
Seven of Grove City’s opponents advanced to
postseason play, including national semifinalist
Messiah. In addition, injuries to several upperclassmen forced a number of newcomers into the lineup
on a regular basis.
Despite these obstacles, Grove City still came
within a half-game of qualifying for the Presidents’
Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
For the fourth consecutive season, Grove City
opened the schedule at home. Senior goalkeeper
Mike Manahan stopped five Penn State Altoona
shots but Grove City dropped the opener, 1-0,
August 31.
Four days later, Grove City opened the road
portion of the schedule with a 0-0, double-overtime draw at La Roche.
The Wolverines doubled up La Roche in shots,
12-6, but could not break the scoreless tie.
Manahan picked up his 17th career shutout in goal.
Grove City improved to 1-1-1 Sept. 7 with a 32 victory over Goucher in the opening day of the
Messiah Tournament in Grantham, Pa. Junior Matt
Sol broke a 2-2 in the 88th minute with his first
career game-winning goal.
Freshman Chuck Witt added a pair of goals in
the victory.
Following a setback against eventual Final Four
participant Messiah, Grove City rebounded for a 51 victory at Pitt-Bradford Sept. 12. Sophomore
goalkeeper Tim Lansing earned his first collegiate
victory after making four saves in goal.
Grove City moved to 2-3-2 on the season Sept.
18 by earning a 1-1 tie at NCAA Tournament-bound
Penn State Behrend. Freshman Jake Kern tallied his
first collegiate goal while Manahan stopped three
shots in overtime to preserve the draw.
Kern scored his second goal of the season
Sept. 27 to help send Grove City’s match with
Franciscan into overtime.
In the extra session, senior Chad Ashby gave
Grove City a 2-1 victory with his first career gamewinning goal. Ashby’s goal -- his first of the season -- came at the 109:40 mark.
Grove City opened PAC play Sept. 29 with a 11 overtime draw at longtime rival Bethany. Bethany
took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the match. but
the Wolverine defense held the Bison at bay for
the final 106 minutes.
Meanwhile, senior Tommy Bresson scored the
equalizer for Grove City at 63:17. Grove City had
two corner kicks in the second overtime but could
not convert either into the game-winning goal.
The Wolverines remained undefeated in the
conference Oct. 2 with a 3-0 win over Waynesburg.
After a scoreless first half, Tyler Ferrier scored his
first goal of 2008 at 50:44. The Wolverines then
added a pair of late insurance goals.
Defensively, Grove City recorded its second
shutout of the season. Manahan faced just two
shots on goal in the win.
Three days later against visiting Saint Vincent,
Grove City out-shot the Bearcats, 34-12, but could
only garner a 1-1 draw. Sol scored an unassisted
goal in the 27th minute but Saint Vincent forced
overtime on Luis Rodriguez’s goal at 82:35.
Manahan earned the PAC’s Goalkeeper/Defensive Player of the Week award for his performances
against Waynesburg and Saint Vincent.
Barry Snyder capped his career at Grove City by
earning Second Team All-PAC honors following
the 2007 season.

Young Squad Makes Tremendous Strides Throughout Season
Grove City’s hopes of qualifying for the conference tournament faded as October progressed,
though. Still, the Wolverines regrouped down the
stretch to pick up impressive road victories over
two geographic rivals.
Grove City recorded its third shutout of the
season Oct. 24 as the Wolverines blanked Geneva,
2-0, in Beaver Falls, Pa.
Kern scored just three minutes into the match
while sophomore Sean Osborne scored at 50:48.
Sol and Dave Larkin both tallied assists.
Three days later, the Wolverines concluded the
2007 campaign with a 4-2 win over Thiel in
Greenville, Pa.
Kern picked up his first career hat trick and
also assisted on a goal by Ashby. Sol and Paul Cardinal both assisted on Kern’s goals.
Manahan and Lansing combined for the victory
in goal.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE
PROGRAM HIS

ORY
Since its humble beginnings as a varsity sport
in 1938, the Grove City College men’s soccer program has emerged as one of the region’s finest.
Few programs can match the sustained level of
excellence that the Grove City program has attained
over the last 70 years.
The soccer program began in 1938 under the
direction of legendary coach/athletic director Robert E. “Bob” Thorn.
Grove City’s rise to the area’s elite began during those formative years as the Wolverines posted
a 10-3 record in the 1941-42 seasons. After a twoyear hiatus in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II,
Grove City continued to excel on the field.
In 1948, the Wolverines recorded their first
undefeated season by going 5-0-3. Four years later,
Grove City completed its first perfect season by
winning all six matches on the 1952 schedule.
Grove City made its first appearance in the
NCAA Championship Tournament in 1962.
Following Thorn’s retirement, Dan Leviton took
over as head coach from 1957-61. During his tenure, Peter Buttner became the College’s first twotime All-American as he earned First Team AllAmerica in both 1958 and 1959.
Cliff Wettig replaced Leviton as head coach in
1962 and made an immediate -- and immeasurable
-- impact on the program. In his first season, Wettig
guided Grove City to a 6-4-1 record and the
school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The next year, John Mulholland earned Honorable Mention All-America at fullback as Grove City
went 6-3-0.
Grove City’s 1948 team (above) went 5-0-3
while the 1952 team (below) went 6-0-0.
The 1964 team (above) went 9-0-0 while many
of the same contributors helped the 1965
Wolverines (below) register an 8-0-1 mark.
Grove City followed with an 18-4-2 mark over
the next three seasons. In 1956, Grove City went
7-0-0. Frank Sbrocco became the College’s first
All-American as he earned Honorable Mention at
outside left that season. Ross Emerson graduated
as the squad’s all-time leading scorer with 48 goals.
The 1964 team set a new program record for
wins by going 9-0-0. In 1965, only a 1-1 draw against
Pitt kept Grove City from a second straight perfect
season as the Wolverines went 8-0-1.
The 1969 squad tied the single-season program
record for wins by going 9-2. Fullback Matthew
Lux earned Third Team All-America that year.
The Wolverines compiled a 7-3-0 record in 1970,
Wettig’s final year as head coach. Russ Trimmer
then coached Grove City to a 5-3-1 mark in 1971.
Grove City went 7-0-0 in 1956, Bob Thorn’s

Don Lyle became the fifth head coach in program history prior to the start of the 1972 season.
After four solid seasons, Grove City broke through
in 1976 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the
NCAA Championship Tournament.
In the process, the Wolverines won a schoolrecord 10 matches and advanced further in an
NCAA Tournament than any other Grove City squad.
The next year, Grove City shattered the singleseason win record by going 16-2 and earning a
share of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference crown.
The Wolverines also captured the program’s first
ECAC title. Senior Greg Kreutzberg set a new program record with 25 goals in 1996.
In 1996, Grove City won 16 matches, a share of
the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and
the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament.
The Wolverines celebrated the country’s
bicentennial in 1976 by advancing to the NCAA
Division III Tournament quarterfinals.
Grove City closed the 1990s with double-digit
win totals in 1998 and 1999. Following a 10-win
season in 2000, the Wolverines then returned to
the ECAC Tournament with a 13-6-1 overall record.
The new decade continued to prove bountiful
for Grove City. After a combined 23 wins in 2003
and 2004, the Wolverines won their first-ever outright PAC title in 2005. Grove City also advanced
to the finals of the ECAC Tournament.
Mike Dreves, who captained the 1995 and 1996
teams, succeeded Lyle as head coach in 2006. He
guided Grove City to 11 wins and a berth in the
ECAC semifinals in his first season as coach.
That year, Bob McNees became Grove City’s
all-time leader in goals with 63.
In 1977, Grove City again broke the single-season win mark by going 11-3-0. The Wolverines
closed the 1970s by going 18-5-1 in 1978-79. That
run continued into the next decade as Grove City
returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1980.
The 1980 team made Grove City’s third all-time
appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Following a brief dry spell, Grove City rebouded
in the middle of the 1980s. The Wolverines followed
up a 9-4-1 mark in 1985 by going 11-2-1 in 1986.
Defender Bill Juergens earned Second Team AllAmerica honors following the 1986 season.
Grove City returned to the postseason in 1995
by qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship Tournament (ECAC).
Grove City won its first outright PAC title in 2005.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE
ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE
ABOUT
The beautifully landscaped
campus of Grove City College
stretches over 150 acres and includes 27 neo-Gothic buildings.
It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation.
While the College has
changed to meet the needs of
the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in
1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts
institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest
quality education at the lowest
possible cost.
Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school
governed by private citizens
(trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does
not accept federal funds.
Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the
Judeo-Christian tradition.
Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal
arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in
education.
Grove City’s programs in
electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology.
The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for
today’s global business reality.
An extensive variety of internship
opportunities are provided
across the curriculum.
Grove City College wants its
students to be prepared in this
age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman
receives a notebook computer
which is his or hers to keep upon
graduation with a four-year degree.

COLLEGE
PROGRAMS AND MAJORS
Grove City College’s
Breen Student Union
This is part of the Information
Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology
across the curriculum.
The College believes that its
student body has a unique mix
of talents and abilities. Its Career
Services program helps students
identify those key assets during
the first year and then builds a
four-year strategy to help them
pursue a satisfying career.
Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases,
alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer
presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan,
in addition to offering two-week
sessions in January and May.
Most of the 2,500 students
live in separate men’s and
women’s dormitories. The rest
are local commuters or married
students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and
social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams.
Grove City, a town of 8,100

MEN’S SOCCER 2008 -- CELEBRATING 70 YEARS
OF
EXCELLENCE
ATHLETIC FACILITIES
All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s
superior facilities for competition, practices and
off-season training and conditioning.
Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades
scheduled in the immediate future.
On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is
home to the College’s football and track and
field teams. During the summer of 2006, the
College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn
Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that
features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a
rubber infill system.
Lights were also added at Robert E. Thorn
Field while the 8-lane track around the field was
resurfaced.
These upgrades benefit the entire campus
community as the complex will now be used
by both the College’s club sports teams and
its intramural program, along with the varsity
teams.
The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also
features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to
the stadium.
Phillips Field House, located at the north
end of the complex, features several locker
rooms, an athletic training room, meeting
rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the
football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. Several upgrades to the
facility were recently made.
The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses
the Grove City College Arena, home to the
College’s basketball and volleyball programs.
The 1,800-seat Arena recently received new
scoreboards, new scorer’s tables and new
shotclocks.
Grove City College installed CSTurf, lights
and new track and field competition areas
at Robert E. Thorn Field in summer 2006.
The Grove City College Pool is one of the
nation’s premier small-college venues for
both swimming and diving and water polo.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
In addition, the PLC features the Grove City
College Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts
the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming
and Diving Championships at the state-of-theart facility.
In 2008, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division
Championships at the College Pool.
The PLC also features a second pool, the
Recreational Pool, which is used by members
of the College community year-round.
A fitness room featuring aerobic, Cybex and
free weight equipment is an integral part of the
PLC. Expansion of the fitness room is a keystone of the Center’s ongoing renovations.
The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural
rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four
basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts,
four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two
indoor jumping pits.
New synthetic floors were installed in the
intramural rooms in summer 2006.
The building houses an athletic training
room, locker rooms and offices for coaches
and physical education faculty. In 2004, the College constructed a new office suite for coaches
and athletic administration.
Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have
also received numerous upgrades in recent
years.
The varsity soccer field, College Field, was
expanded and re-sodded during the summer
of 2005. College Field also received a new
press box during the summer of 2007.
Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities received major facelifts in 200708 as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic
scoreboards were installed on both fields.
