OBITUARIES
Peggy Haddad Saoud
Peggy Haddad Saoud, 90, passed away peacefully in the
presence of loved ones on Sept. 9, 2014.
She had been living in Chandler for the past 3 ½ years,
but lived most of her life in Superior in the same home
built by her father when she was a young child.
Peggy graduated from Superior High School in 1941. As a
young woman Peggy worked in her father’s clothing store
and at The Valley National Bank, which is now Bank of the
West.
She married her husband, Ramzy, in 1957. A few years
later they purchased the Superior Dry Cleaners and
operated it for 30+ years before retiring. They moved to
Chandler in February of 2011 to be closer to their families,
but she still referred to Superior as her
home.
Having been married 54 years, Ramzy
preceded Peggy in death in June of that
year.
Peggy is survived by her daughters
Sandra Saoud Pike (Mike), Cindy
Johnston (Joe), grandchildren Ramzy
and Cassy Saba, James Johnston,
William Johnston (Ashley) and 2 great
grandchildren.
Services were held on Sept. 15 at St. George Antiochian
Orthodox Church in Phoenix.

Superior celebrates Headstart’s 50th anniversary
By Mila Besich-Lira
Superior Sun
The students and staff of Superior Head
Start invited the community to come
and celebrate the 50th anniversary of
the national Headstart program. The
Headstart program is a federal program
that provides pre-school programs for the
low to moderate income residents in the
United States. The program focusses on
the basic fundamentals of learning through
play, reading and age appropriate lessons
and helping the children to learn by doing.
The Superior Headstart had a patriotic
celebration where they learned about the
colors red, white and blue, they made hats
with red, white and blue and they made
a healthy red, white and blue snack of
strawberries, blueberries and yogurt. The
students practiced serving themselves
and few even helped to serve the guests in
attendance.
This week the students will take their
first walking field trip through their school
neighborhood. They will walk around the
block and learn where different businesses
are and see their neighborhood.
The Superior Headstart has been serving
residents of Superior for over 20 years.
The school accepts donations of magazines
and other items to have for craft supplies
and the students always love when
community members stop in to read to
them. You can learn more about Superior
Headstart by calling 520-689-2812.

Last April, Americans

(over 780,000 lbs.) of

6,100 sites operated by

4,400 of its state and local

When those results are

DEA and its partners have

This initiative addresses

misuse , and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse
in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of
accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs
are obtained from family and friends, including from the
home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now
advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused
medicines, flushing them down the toilet or throwing
them in the trash, both pose potential safety and health
hazards.
DEA is in the process of approving new regulations that
implement the Safe and Responsible Drug Disposal Act
of 20`0, which amends the Controlled Substances Act
to allow an “ultimate user” (that is, a patient or their
family member or pet owner) of controlled substance
medications to dispose of them by delivering them to
entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept
them. The act also allows the Attorney General to
authorize long-term care facilities to dispose of their
residents controlled substances in certain instances.

Panthers
By Andrew Luberda
Superior Sun
Midway through the second quarter of Friday’s Copper
Helmet game versus seventh-ranked Ray it appeared the
tenth-ranked Panthers were making a statement, leading
the Bearcats, 20 – 0. At that point, the game had all the
makings of a signature win, but things changed in a hurry
as the Bearcats went on to score 34 unanswered points in
a 34 – 32 victory.
“(We had) way too many penalties and it cost us the
game,” Panthers’ head coach Ryan Palmer said after the
disappointing loss. “When we’re up 20 – 0 we must stay
focused and disciplined.”
Despite giving up a 20-point lead, the Panthers had their
chance to win, battling back to pull within two points late
in the game. A successful 2-point conversion was nullified
after the Panthers were called for a penalty, one of many
that ultimately cost them.
During the Bearcats run of 34 unanswered points, the
Panthers turned the ball over three times and were called
for several penalties. Despite everything seemingly against
them, the Panthers hung in.
“Our kids fought back and almost overcame (the
mistakes),” Palmers said. “It was a very hard fought game
and both teams competed to the very end.”
Panthers’ QB Gage Cruz rushed for 158 yards and four
touchdowns. He also threw for a touchdown on a pass
play to Matthew Zavala, who finished the game with nine
receptions for 187 yards. Sophomore running back Edgar
Pacheco rushed for 98 yards in the game.
Pacheco and Jalon Murray led the Panther’s defense with
12 and 10 tackles, respectively. Elias Olmos and Marcos
Buena each recovered fumbles on defense. Olmos also
recorded an interception.
The Panthers will look to end their two-game losing
streak this week when they host Joseph City. The Wildcats
are 1 – 3 and enter Friday’s game off a 56 – 6 loss to thirdranked Mogollon last week. Friday’s game is scheduled for
7:00 p.m.

Choose the good life
I
n 1 Chronicles 10:12, we read some sad things about
Israel’s first king, King Saul. He was unfaithful to the
Lord, he did not keep the Word of the Lord; and, he
did not inquire of the Lord for guidance, but consulted a
medium for advice.
From Isaiah 1:16 & 17, “Make yourself clean, stop doing
the evil things and wrong deeds. Learn to do what is
right.” Isaiah also said: “Seek the Lord while He may be
found, call on Him
while He is near. Quit your evil ways
and thoughts. Turn to the Lord
and receive His
mercy and forgiveness” (55:6,7).
There is a right

choice for you. Family Life Christian Center
Life can be filled
with pain and frustration, or, you can experience: love,
mercy, a calm spirit and peace of mind.
You can pick a difficult lifestyle or an easier one. Regardless, you will always live the live that you have chosen. So choose right. Choose Jesus Christ to be your friend
and savior. Choose the good life! Live with no regrets!
