constituent vraiment notre force motrice.

Dessins,
pastels et peintures associés à la grâce
et à la fierté féminine. Vigée Le Brun
est derrière un célèbre portrait de
la reine entourée de ses enfants, ce
qui était une tentative de séparer
Marie-Antoinette de son image
extravagante et libertine. Autre
qu’Ottawa, cette exposition est
seulement présentée à Paris et à
New York.

PAINT THE BIG PICTURE
Having always indulged my scientific side as a
scientist working at the bench and now recently
retired, it was time to indulge my creative side.
Beginning with introductory painting and drawing,
in pencil and acrylic, I now participate in Advanced
Studio Practice working on individual portrait
painting inspired by family photos. The talented
instructors patiently teach you the basics and then
you can build upon those. While painting can
be frustrating at times, I am so focused and
rejuvenated. I feel I am definitely stumbling
towards my own style.

Computers are the tools we need
to better accomplish our day-today tasks and reach out to the
rest of the world. Whether for
on-line banking, staying connected
with grandchildren or accessing
information from the best thinkers
and libraries in the world,
computers make our lives easier.
The Bloom Family Tech Lounge
offers Centre participants a place
to relax, learn and stay connected
at their own pace. They can use
the computers on site or bring in
their own devices.
I enjoy volunteering my time
and teaching older adults who
are embracing technology and
understand the possibilities of the
digital era.
We offer expertise in both the
Apple and Windows environment.
Our volunteers are there as a
resource helping with technical
glitches and providing learning
tools, pointing members to the
gamut of resources available at
their fingertips. Clients find a
friendly face, get good advice and
always leave with smiles on their
faces.

JOURNEY ON THE ORIENT
EXPRESS
Classical music is my passion.
As a former professional horn
player with the Montreal
Symphony Orchestra and currently
a writer of program notes for
symphonies across Canada, the
U.S. and Asia, I truly enjoy sharing
my love of music with others.
Teaching music appreciation at
the Cummings Centre continues
to be a wonderful experience.
Participants are eager and
enthusiastic and enjoy learning.
No previous knowledge is
required as we begin our classical
music odyssey exploring a varied
list of classical composers and
their lives. Hop aboard the Orient
Express stopping at cities along
the way discovering composers
from Vienna to Istanbul. Themed
classes focusing on operatic
villains and individual composers
such as Chopin and Beethoven
lead to spirited class discussions.
I look so forward to teaching the
classes and watching participants
bond over music and join me in
search of musical adventures.

WELLNESS PROGRAM
THE WELLNESS CENTRE
WELLNESS POLICY
The programming at the Wellness Centre emphasizes fitness that is functional,
fun and related to everyday movement. The Wellness Centre is uniquely designed
for the adult 50 years and older, keeping in mind that overall health and well-being
are physical as well as mental. Small classes, personal attention and monitoring
set us apart. Individual programs developed by the Centre’s professionals
emphasize brain health, physical movement, strength, balance, posture and flexibility.
The focus is on empowering and maintaining general health and enhanced quality
of life as well as prevention and rehabilitation of injuries, back and joint problems
and fall prevention.
A fitness consultation is mandatory,
at a nominal fee of $20, for anyone
who wishes to participate in wellness
programs and activities.
“Exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic, independent and healthy as you
age,” says Annette Vezina, Program Manager, Wellness Centre. “You must keep
your body fit if you want to be able to enjoy other aspects of your busy life. The
Wellness Centre has a wide array of classes and specialized gym programs that
will help you attain your fitness goals.”
In some cases, codes for wellness
classes are not listed because our
professionals work with you to find
the best class to fit your needs and

HEARING SCREENING CLINIC
Hearing loss is an important health
concern which is often unrecognized and
undertreated. In older adults, hearing
loss has been shown to be associated
with poor quality of life and
functional limitations. Statistics show
that 1 in 3 adults aged 65 and over
suffer from hearing loss; this increases
to 1 in 2 adults aged 75 years and older.
A hearing screening clinic will take
place at the Cummings Centre.
Participants will briefly meet with
an audioprothesist and undergo
audiometry screening. Individual
sessions will last 20 minutes and are
on a first-come, first-served basis.

ADAPTED PROGRAMS
Everyone needs a helping hand when recovering from surgery or adjusting
to life with a long-term condition. The Adapted Exercise Clinic is more than
a rehab facility – it is a place where people with similar challenges exercise
together, laugh together and share ideas. “There is a place for everyone at
the Cummings Centre,” says Maria Fragapane, Program Manager.
For over 15 years the Adapted Program participants have continued to
train and improve whether from a stroke, progressive neuromuscular
disorders (Parkinson’s disease, MS) or other health challenges. Successful
rehabilitation comes from exercising body and mind and the Cummings Centre
provides so many opportunities to do just that.
Unique offerings such as adapted boxing and sailing complement a full
roster of innovative programming. Lecture series highlight relevant and
timely topics and provide opportunities for exchange and outreach with the
greater community. Volunteers complete the team. “We could not function
without the invaluable collaboration of our volunteers,” says Stefani Novick,
Program Manager. “They create a unique link of seniors helping seniors.”

99 WAYS TO MAKE
AN IMPACT
The impact our volunteers make on a daily basis can be seen on the smiling
faces of the people with whom they interact. Their contribution is felt and
seen in so many areas. Significant strides in the adapted exercise gym, funds
raised to ensure our continued delivery of services to those in need, strategic
decisions thrusting our Agency to the forefront of innovation for the 50+
population are due to the dedication of our volunteers. Bonds are made
through support and genuine sharing whether welcoming someone at the
door, assisting in the Tech Lounge or serving a meal.
"Our Cummings Centre volunteers are outstanding individuals making a
remarkable impact," says Lynn Gordon, Director of Volunteer Services. "Our
volunteers inspire us with their passion and commitment. We hope you will
join our team of volunteers and see how you too can make an impact. Whether
big or small, each impact matters and does make a difference."

VOLUNTEERS BENEFIT FROM IMPROVED INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
I believe in the work being done
at Cummings. The Centre
provides seniors with everything
they need from comprehensive
adapted programming for those
with health challenges to support
groups as well as activities for
boomers and seniors wanting to
learn and have fun.
As a governor and volunteer
working on several committees,
I use various skill sets from my
working life to truly impact the
Centre. My presence is so
appreciated by all the staff and
participants. While I can say
that I have helped the Centre,
my involvement has helped me.
The sense of joie de vivre is
contagious – there are no long
faces at Cummings!
- Brian Dankner
Volunteers believe that they receive substantial benefits from their
volunteer activities, giving them a chance to develop new skills. Their
volunteer experience has given them better skills in communications,
organizing, fundraising and technical or office work.

LEAVING A LEGACY
A GIFT TO ENSURE WE CAN MEET THE NEEDS OF
SENIORS TODAY AND TOMORROW
STEPHEN’S STORY
FOUNDATION
Stephen was born in Warsaw, Poland. He was an only child and had a
peaceful childhood. When the Nazis came to power, Stephen’s parents made
the decision to move the family to a small town in Lithuania in the hopes that
they would be safer.
One day, as Stephen was relaxing on the top of a small hill watching a
shepherd tend his sheep, he was disturbed by loud noises coming from the
town. The Nazis had entered the village and gathered the townspeople inside
a synagogue only to burn it down with all of them inside. Stephen's parents
perished along with the others. Stephen, now alone in the world, escaped to
the forest and spent the rest of the war hiding and running.
After the war Stephen made his way to Montreal, graduated from university
and was able to make a good living. He never married and continued to be a
loner. As a result of his past experiences, Stephen suffered from extreme
paranoia, making it hard for him to trust anyone.
As the years passed Stephen became worried about his future and who
would take care of him as he grew older and weaker. Stephen came to the
Cummings Centre and the staff worked with him and supported him even
though his paranoia made it difficult. During this time Stephen created a fund
at the Cummings Centre to honour and remember his parents.
After a brief illness, Stephen passed away peacefully. He left a legacy in
his will to the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors Foundation. He was
acknowledging the great work the staff and volunteers do and in his own way,
thanking them for helping him. Through his generosity others will benefit.
Stephen will not be forgotten, and his legacy will live on.
Please join Stephen and others who have left bequests to the
Cummings Centre. With planning, anyone can leave a legacy.

I love our cooking classes and I look so forward
to meeting with the other group members and
seeing what we will be creating together.
There is such a sense of friendship and caring

Everyone pitches in working together and joking
around while we prepare our recipes for the day.

ENHANCE YOUR INDEPENDENCE
SOCIAL SERVICES
We all struggle with the reality of aging, whether for ourselves or our loved
ones. We are worried about the challenges we will face in the future or
those we are already facing today.
We don’t like the thought of losing our independence. When we experience
difficulty getting around, cooking meals, or simply doing what we want,
when we want, we don’t always know where to look for help.
Imagine sitting down with someone who can provide you with a plan to
improve your quality of life. The Cummings Centre professional Social Services
team is trained to provide you with the support you and your family need.
We listen to what is going on in your life, either as a senior, or as someone
caring for a loved one. We see the bigger picture so we can help you make
the best short and long-term choices.
