MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Andrew High School Community,
As the summer begins, it is time for us to take a breath from an exhilarating 2015-16 school year.
June is a great time to catch up, reflect on the past year and begin preparation for the next school
August year. Along with the leadership team, we poured through student achievement data, survey data,

Throughout the first month since school let out, the data has told us the following:
• Parent and student survey data points to a high level of satisfaction about their experiences at VJA;
particularly high areas are regarding feeling safe, feeling adults and peers care about them, and the
sense of being prepared for life after high school.
• Participation in school activities (clubs, athletics, theater, etc.) remains exceptionally high.
• Referrals saw a significant decline, particularly regarding tardiness.
• Continued increase of students in honors/AP programs, while reducing students enrolled in basic/
instructional programming.
• Exceptionally high graduation rate, as well as a high level of college acceptance/enrollment for the
Class of 2016.
13 Parent/Teacher Conferences
(no student attendance)
12 PM - 8 PM
As always, there are areas of “not yet” we need to continue to improve. They are:
• Ensuring all students reach acceptable levels of performance in academic or honors classes. Our

passing rate maintained at 98%, but we saw a slight decline in students performing at a C or higher
level.

• Improving communication and collaboration processes with our certified and support staff.

transition to SAT in Illinois.
This summer and throughout the fall, we will continue to dialogue with parent, student, and staff teams
to vet our plans to continue to improve Andrew High School.
We also know that 2016-17 brings in all sorts of new that we are preparing for this summer. We are
expanding our 1:1 program at VJA which will provide devices for all freshmen and sophomores, as
well as increasing classroom sets for upperclassmen, to continue to leverage technology as a tool for
learning. We will be embarking down the road of integrated math - our Class of 2020 will be the
first to work through this new, exciting curriculum. The State of Illinois’ shift to the SAT will include a

substantial shift in both preparation for the new test, as well as educating students and parents of its
impact on the post-secondary planning process. All this while continuing the tradition of creating a
challenging, caring, and community focused school that all of you can be proud to call yours.
Please enjoy the rest of your summer. As always, I remain both proud and humble to serve as your
Principal. If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out at

Developmental Assets Profile (DAP) survey for all students
Consolidated High School District 230 will
administer the Developmental Assets Profile
(DAP) survey this school year. Following
a successful pilot with freshmen last year,
we are ready to roll this survey out to all
students. As part of the online registration
process, parents/guardians will be asked to
provide consent to have their child take the
DAP survey.
As you know, District 230 is committed
to the academic and social/emotional
success of all students. In order to further
support the social and emotional success
of students, the DAP will be administered
this fall during Period 2. The DAP is a 20-25
minute survey that aims to measure students
internal strengths (Commitment to Learning,
Positive Values, Social Competencies, and
Positive Identity) and external supports
(Support, Empowerment, Boundaries and
Expectations, and Constructive Use of Time).
Used over time, the DAP also provides
growth data in these same areas.
The DAP will provide data to determine
additional support or intervention needs as
well as validate current intervention focus. If
you would like more information on the DAP,
please visit http://d230.org/dap/ or the DAP
website at http://www.search-institute.org/
surveys/DAP
“Data from the Developmental Assets Profile
(DAP) survey has been helping organizations
and partnerships since 2005. To date, more
than 600,000 young people in between
the ages of 8 and 18 have taken the DAP,
making it one of the most used instruments in
the world for measuring the internal strengths
and external supports that influence a youth’s
success in school and in life. Multiple studies
have demonstrated that the DAP measures
those strengths and supports in valid and
reliable ways.
When DAP data is combined with data on
attendance, achievement, and other factors,
it is possible to gain a more complete picture
of young people’s lives. That more complete
picture makes it possible to design and
implement better strategies to prepare young
people to thrive in some type of college, a
high-skill career, and citizenship,” according
to developers.
Please be aware that under the Protection of
Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c)
(1) (A), you have the right to review a copy
of the questions asked of your student(s).
Survey questions can be found on the DAP
website (http://www.search-institute.org/
surveys/DAP).
Look for more information on DAP in the
coming months.

apply for a fee waiver.
Helping Students Make Healthy Choices
District 230 is committed to working
closely with students, families, community
resources and law enforcement to help
students make healthy choices. Over
the years we have utilized a number
of strategies including health class
curriculum, peer education, dean’s office
meetings, the Snowball retreats and the
Athletic and Co-Curricular Honor Code of
Conduct to educate students about the
consequences of their actions and provide
opportunities for them to choose healthy
activities. As part of our ongoing efforts, we
partner with local police departments and
conduct canine searches in our schools.
We hope that such unannounced searches
serve as a method to deter students from
bringing drugs or illegal substances onto
campus. The addition of the Advisory
curriculum also assists in educating
students about these important topics.
Back-to-School Night Welcome to the 2016-17
School Year Orientation for New Students
and Parents
Andrew High School will welcome parents
and new students at a Freshman Parent
Orientation meeting on Tuesday, August
16th, at 7:00 p.m. The program will feature
presentations by school administration
to acquaint parents and students with
information about the student’s first year
at Andrew. On Wednesday, August
24th, at 7:00 p.m., parents are invited
to attend the annual Back-to-School
Night. This evening provides parents
with an opportunity to meet their student’s
teachers and to learn about course
goals and expectations. Each parent will
follow his or her student’s daily schedule
through the evening. Administration will be
available to answer questions and provide
assistance.
STUDENT DEBIT CARD / LUNCH CARD CHANGE

All District 230 Students Must Prove Residency Within The District Each Year
In the district’s ongoing efforts to be fiscally
responsible, all District 230 students need
to show proof of residency within the district
boundaries on an annual basis, similar to when
students first enrolled at the high school.
Category I (one document required)
This procedure was put into place to protect
the financial interest of taxpayers in District 230
by assuring that the students who receive an
education in our schools are legally entitled to
do so.
• Signed and dated lease and proof of last
month’s payment, e.g. canceled check or
receipts (renters)
A series of dates were held in the Spring for
families to verify residency for the 2016-17
school year.
All families must provide one document from
Category I and three documents from Category
II. All of the documents must be presented
at one time, partial paperwork will not be
accepted.
• Most recent property tax bill and proof of
payment, e.g. canceled check or form 1098
(homeowners)
• Mortgage papers (new homeowners)
• Letter from manager and proof of last
month’s payment, e.g. canceled check
or receipt (trailer park residents)
• Housing letter (military personnel)
• Letter of residence from landlord in lieu of
lease (7:60-E1)
• Letter of residence to be used when the
person seeking to enroll a student is living
with a District resident (7:60-E2)
STUDENT SCHEDULES FOR 2016-2017
Each year Andrew High School releases student schedules to families that have
completed all registration steps in the allotted time frame. This year a hard-copy
mailing will NOT be sent home but we will be sending all information via email with
attachments. This is in conjunction with our effort to reduce paper and to model our
migration of technology.
EARLY-BIRD SCHEDULE RELEASE DAY will be August 3rd for families with all
steps completed by July 31st.
Otherwise, families can come to the school on August 10th between 12 noon –
5 p.m. to complete the steps. When steps are completed, the schedule will be
activated in Skyward shortly thereafter.
The following steps need to be completed before the schedule will be activated
in Skyward. The window to complete all steps is June 28th - July 31st.
1) RESIDENCY: all families are required to provide proof of residency on an
annual basis. If you have not proven residency for the upcoming school year,
the Guidance Office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
to accept your residency documents. See above list for required documents.
Contact our Guidance Department at 342-5821 with any questions.
2) CONSENT: all families are required to provide consent annually FOR EACH
CHILD to use technology, appear in photos, acceptance of student handbook,
etc. This step is done in Skyward under the parent login (not the student login).
3) HEALTH RECORDS: all incoming freshmen and transfer students must
have a physical on record with the Nurse. Also, all seniors need an updated
Meningicoccal vaccine on file. An incomplete file will delay your child’s start
of the school year. All documents can be sent to the Nurse at Andrew High
School.
4) PAYMENT: school fees can be paid electronically in Skyward (we do not accept
Discover), through a mail-in check, or in cash. Requests for payment plans,
or for a waiver of fees, must be done with our Cashier at 342-5870 who can
provide appropriate forms.
*The option to purchase Andrew Spirit-wear and to purchase English novels
will be available in the Commons on August 10th from 12 noon – 5 p.m.
Have a question? Email us at [email protected]
Category II (3 documents showing
proper address are required)
• Driver’s license/state ID card
• Vehicle registration
• Voter registration
• Most recent cable television
and/or credit card bill
• Current public aid letter
• Current homeowners/renters
insurance policy and premium
payment receipt
• Most recent gas, electric, and/or
water bill
• Current library card with address
• Receipt for moving van rental
DEANS’ OFFICE
As summer continues to progress, we encourage
all families to continuously reinforce District 230’s
points of emphasis for our students: personal
responsibility, solving problems peacefully, and
making positive choices. Summer brings large
amounts of unstructured time that challenge
kids on the above points. When our students
find themselves in difficult situations where there
is not someone immediately available to assist
them in their decision making process, we hope
they fall back on what we as a school, and you as
a parent, have discussed with them. Reinforcing
the ideas of taking personal responsibility for our
choices, choosing to solve problems peacefully,
and wanting to make positive choices, may help
our students, your children, reduce some of the
stresses in their lives.
2016-2017 ID Handout
All students will receive a 2016-2017 school ID on
their first day of school. Freshmen will find their
ID in the orientation day packet they will receive
on Wednesday, August 17th. Sophomores,
Juniors, and Seniors will need to pick up their
ID in the cafeteria between 7:15 a.m. and 7:50
a.m. on Thursday, August 18th. Additional ID
pickup times will occur during lunch periods on
Thursday, August 18th.

ULTIMA
Fine Arts
This past semester, students
in the ULTIMA Fine Arts
class have been working on
creating projects for Spring and
Summer. On Tuesday, May 3,
2016, students hosted a Spring
Art Show for friends, family,
and faculty. Students not only
created all of the art but also
put together small presentations
to share with their friends,
family members, and faculty
who attended the show. Light
snacks were also provided by
the ULTIMA Daily Living Class.
It was a huge success and
thanks to all that attended!

all incoming freshmen must have a
complete physical prior to entry into
high school, including an up-to-date
immunization record, before receiving
a class schedule. All students are
required to have:
• Two (2) doses of Measles, Mumps
and Rubella vaccine (MMR) given on
or after the 1st birthday
• Polio vaccine series with booster
given on or after the 4th birthday
• Tetanus Diphtheria, Pertussis series
with Tdap booster
• Three (3) doses of Hepatitis B
vaccines according to the required
schedule
• Two (2) doses of Varicella vaccine
given on or after the 1st birthday
The form for the physical is two
sided.
• Your physician must sign and date
to verify the immunization record
and again after the physical portion
with his/her stamp, including phone
number.
• Parents must also complete and sign
a comprehensive health history. This
is a mandated portion of the state’s
physical form and it is on the top of
the second page of the physical.
Please be sure that all signatures are
present before returning your form to
school.
• The nurse is required by law to
RETURN any physicals NOT in
compliance with the law. DOUBLE
CHECK that all signatures are
present.
• Always make a copy for your records
Important reminders
• Each student must also have a pink
emergency sheet on file in the
Nurse’s Office.
• Please remember that no student will
be able to receive their schedule for
the 2016-2017 school year until all
medical records are in compliance
with the state law and on file in the
Nurse’s Office.
• Send your forms in as soon as they
are complete to avoid a delay in
getting your class schedule.
• The Nurse’s Office is closed in the
summer. Physical and emergency
forms are available in the Main Office,
Guidance Office, or online during the
summer.
• Completed forms should have
been mailed or turned in to the

remember to send a new Medication Form prior to the start of the 2016- 2017 school
year. This form needs to be updated each school year for your student to continue
receiving his/her medication.

they can attend any tryout or practice.
This year we will be using an online service to do this.
Parents should visit

The only paper work needed to be turned in is an IHSA physical form
that must be completed every year.
These are available online and at the main entrance.

MUSIC BOOSTERS
The summer season has
kicked off for VJA Marching
Thunderbolts! We are going
to miss all of our graduated
seniors, but we are looking
forward to getting to know a
large freshman class. While
summers are for going to the
beach, family vacations, and
hanging out with friends; if
you’re a Marching Thunderbolt
it also means you spend time
making new friends and learning new music
and a new show! The 2016 Marching Band
show is called “This Heart of Glass” featuring
music by Cold Play. We are all excited and
can’t wait to watch the show develop through
the summer and take shape at Band Camp
July 24th -30th.
The fall season is all set and we invite you
out to one of our shows, starting with the
parent preview show at VJA at 7:30 p.m. on
September 3rd on the football field. The next
weekend we travel to Lake Park for the Lancer
Joust on September 10th then onto Morton
on September 17th. On October 1 we are
hosting our second annual VJA Invitational
which takes place all day at VJA with our own
Marching Thunderbolts closing out the day
performing their show “This Heart of Glass”.
From there we go to Lincoln Way on October
8th, Providence on October 15th, and ISU
for our state competition on October 22nd.
We have our Fall Craft Show on October
29th and 30th, with the Community Show on
Saturday, October 29th at 7:30 at VJA. We
finish our season this year on November 4th
and 5th at Super Regionals at Lucas Oil Field
in Indianapolis. It’s a busy season, but so
much fun! Please feel free to come support
the program at one of these shows. Looking
forward to a great summer and a successful
fall season. Eyes With Pride!

ANDREW FEST ASSEMBLY
At our Andrew Fest Assembly we had several people (male and female students, staff, and a
school board member) have their heads shaved for the Saint Baldricks Foundation; play Human
Hungry-Hungry Hippo; play Bubble Ball; and the two teachers with the most donations pledged
in their name were gracious enough to play Pie in the Face (as you can see Ms. Monroe got the
pie). We were also able to say good-bye to two of our teachers that retired at the end of this
year (Mrs. Viverito (pictured) and Mr. Roche). What a way to close a great year!
