The Sarah Smith Education Foundation (SSEF) supports the quality of education at Sarah Smith through strategic investments in curriculum and instructional programs that directly enhance the school’s mission of academic excellence for all Sarah Smith students. We accomplish this by providing funding in two areas: 1. Academic enrichment and supplemental curriculum materials not covered through the Atlanta Public Schools budget 2. Faculty development opportunities that encourage teaching innovation and excellence Message from SSEF Board The Foundation Board is focused on the future, specifically future excellence at Sarah Smith. We believe that public funds will remain under pressure and that the need for unexpected, necessary expenditures to preserve excellence will arise. The Foundation is committed to providing our children with access to a world-class education by funding exceptional curriculum and educational enhancements and supporting our talented faculty. Sarah Smith parents expect, and our students deserve, a quality education beyond the means of tax revenue alone. As such, the need to supplement public funds is a fact of life, especially with today’s public budget challenges. While public funds provide the basics, the 2 In 2011-2012, SSEF purchased seventeen new Promethean Boards completing our goal of equipping every classroom with this important technology. In conjunction with this the foundation funded teacher training, “Connecting Technology to Today’s Learners.” Foundation strives to foster teaching excellence and student achievement beyond the “basics.” The Foundation can meet these goals only with the deepest commitment of members of the Sarah Smith Elementary School community. The 2011-2012 SSEF Board This year alone SSEF will spend more than $260,000 for educational enrichment programs, materials and training. We are at a pivotal point with the addition of approximately 200 new students and 20 new teachers. The way that we address present opportunities and challenges will enable our school’s continued success. Jennifer Vincent, Treasurer Elect Looking ahead, our biggest challenges will be preserving and continuing to build on Sarah Smith’s excellence. Our goal for the 2012-13 school year is to raise $185,000 through our SuperStar Annual Fund. We hope every parent, grandparent, faculty and staff member of Sarah Smith will choose to make a contribution this year in support of SSEF to help us maintain the high standard of education excellence that we have come to expect at Sarah Smith. Last year, the media specialists, Margaret Gillogly and Kelly McQueen, received $1,000 from SSEF to purchase e-Books that support the common core curriculum. “Before the grant, I purchased 100 e-books for student use, and the students really loved them. That’s what got me thinking about purchasing subject related unlimited use e-books for the teachers to access and use in conjunction with the Promethean Boards,” said Ms. McQueen. “The books are essentially electronic text books that engage students. The books are interactive -- students and teachers can highlight sections, pause the lesson to use the dictionary if needed and they feature videos and quizzes to supplement the text and challenge the students,” explains Ms. Gillogly. “For the younger children they enhance emergent literacy skills, and for the older kids the texts are subject specific and support various units. For instance, there is one in support of the 3rd grade unit on economics that covers supply and demand, one for 4th graders on Westward expansion, and another in support of the 5th grade biology unit on cells and genes.” “As media specialists we see the importance of utilizing technology to improve and enhance student learning. We are grateful to the parents who support SSEF and allow our school to offer this innovative learning technology,” says Ms. McQueen. 5 Specials Art, Media Center, Music, and PE–$10,100 Provides funds for program-enhancing materials and equipment to supplement what APS provides. Grades: All Instructional Assessment Learning A-Z–$2,700 Online, animated leveled books and interactive quizzes provide individualized instruction and tracking of student reading progress. Grades: K-1 in reading and math. Reading and math levels can be used to provide individualized instruction. Grades: 1-5 International Baccalaureate–$40,100 SRS was first awarded IB status in 2006. The IB program encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged world citizens. This program impacts the whole curriculum at SRS, teaching each student essential skills for learning and becoming a productive global citizen. SSEF funds pay for inquiry materials for each grade STAR Reading and Math Assessment Program–$10,000 A fast and reliable computer-based method for assessing and tracking student progress Classroom & Specialist Subsidies According to research released by the National School Supply and Equipment Association, public school teachers in the United States spent more than $1.33 billion out of pocket on school supplies and instructional materials in the 2009-2010 school year. The report revealed that teachers spent on average $356 of their own money on supplies and resources. To alleviate this burden from our teachers and ensure each classroom provides an optimal learning environment, SSEF issues $300 grants to every teacher and specialist each year to purchase classroom materials. Darren Wegg, a 2nd grade teacher, explains how he uses his grant money: 6 The $300 grant from SSEF to purchase instructional materials is a huge help in creating a rich and stimulating classroom environment. This year, I purchased an iPod/CD player so that I am able to utilize the weekly reading stories on CDs in the Treasures series, Junior Great Book Stories and also play music during the work day when appropriate. I purchased headphones for the classroom computers so students can listen to stories on the TumbleBooks website, and take Accelerated Reading Quizzes in private on the computer. I have also used my SSEF grant to purchase language arts and math posters to provide visual cues for the students, supplemental grade level curriculum workbooks that are aligned with the new Common Core Standards, and student mailboxes and pocket charts to help the children with organizational skills. I am very grateful for the support that the Sarah Smith Education Foundation provides to my classroom.” and for required development and training of teachers. Sarah Smith is one of only a handful of elementary schools in the APS system that affords students the opportunity to matriculate through an IB accredited program for grades K-12. as the First Lego League Competition, where select SRS students from the Robotics Club present their solution to the First Lego League (FLL) problem. Grades: 4-5 International Travelers Program–$9,500 A school-wide program supporting the updated Georgia curriculum and the IB philosophy. Each Spring, with passports in hand, the entire school will travel (virtually) to Provides funds for academic competitions such 7 Instructional Assessment Each year SSEF funds membership dues in STAR Reading and Math an online skills assessment program for students that allows teachers to bridge assessment and instruction. Mr. Blackwell, a 4th grade teacher, has found STAR assessments help drive curriculum and allows him to create individual instruction plans for each student: “I am a big fan of STAR assessments. The depth of information we are able to get on each student is amazing. I can analyze individual strengths and weaknesses based on how, or even how long it took for the student to answer the questions.” Mr. Blackwell explains, “I find it very useful in setting individual goals for each student. For instance, based on a student’s beginning school-year reading level, STAR assessment will help us set a realistic goal for the student to achieve by year-end. The program will even provide actionable data – for example, to achieve a specified reading level the student will have to earn a certain number of points on Advance Reader quizzes. That allows each student to move at his or her own level and pace, and allows me to meet each student where they are.” Mr. Blackwell has developed a unique way to utilize the assessment tool to incentivize his students to achieve. “For every student who achieves 100% of their AR goal by the end of the year we do something special like pajama day at school. Also, students who double their goal get a bowling party. The students love it and I love that this program allows me to spend half the time I normally would assessing the students and more time on classroom instruction and practice.” 8 an exciting international destination.
