InternatIonal Bringing hope to the hopeless Focus on the Family ® International efforts touch hearts all over the world S arah’s* parents died when she was just 14, a familiar tragedy in South Africa, a nation where an estimated 3.8 million children have been orphaned, in large part due to AIDS. After her parents’ death, Sarah became the head of her family, assuming care for herself and her little 10-year-old brother. She has all the responsibilities of a mother: finding food for both of them. Making sure her brother gets to school on time. Struggling to explain to school officials why fees haven’t been paid for months. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up in the morning, they will advise you. — Proverbs — 6:21b-23 There’s no way around it: your children look to you as a hero. And the words that come from your mouth carry a weight in your children’s young hearts that is hard to overstate. A single positive word can carry them through a whole day. Imagine then how much of an impact a heart-to-heart conversation with your child can have! Hope in South Africa Helping Hispanic Families (continued) T his year, Focus on the Family is working tirelessly to bring hope and relief to orphans like Sarah in South Africa. We’re working with Focus on the Family Africa and Children’s HopeChest® to open care centers throughout the city of Durban. By the end of the year, we plan to be helping hundreds of orphans every day, providing nutritious meals, biblical discipleship and basic medical care. We’re called as Christians “to look after orphans and widows in their distress.” In a country with millions of orphans, the opportunity to serve is huge. Children, like Sarah, will find comfort for today and hope for eternity because of your support. Sixto Porras is the Focus on the Family® regional director for the Latin World. He and his team are dedicated to Hispanic families and strengthening homes from Southern Europe to South and Central America. Through radio and television programs (more than 10,000 so far!), Sixto teaches families how to thrive. Because of support from friends like you, families around the world are being unified and strengthened every day. Thank you for caring about families here in the States and overseas. Sixto is often cited as a family matters expert by television and newspapers. YOU can have an impact on his ministry with your gift today. Thank you for supporting Focus on the Family and our efforts here in the United States and around the world to help families thrive. Sarah is strong for her brother in the face of their parents’ deaths, but talking to her about her family brings tears to her eyes. Together, let’s wipe her tears. Let’s bring hope to South Africa and other countries where the need is the greatest. n Work hard to engage in meaningful conversation with your children every day. Ask questions. Listen carefully. Show your children that what they say matters. They’ll respond by sharing more and more about their lives. By opening their hearts and letting you speak truth into them. And it’s never too late to start! You can bring relief to South Africa’s orphans and to people in need all over the world.
