Sehome High School Home of the Mariners February 2016 (360) 676-6481 Message from the Principal Important Links Sehome Website Calendar Counseling Dept. Learning Center Career Center Athletics PTSA Bellingham School District Winter Weather Information Bellingham Promise Signs of spring are popping up everywhere, including the start of our second semester, the end of our winter athletic season, and the planning for 2016-17 registration. Having navigated first semester, we stand ready to jump into the second semester with confidence. My hope is that you, too, will look forward to the challenges of the new semester. I encourage students to use this time to reflect on their hard work, identify their areas of strengths as well as areas in which they can improve. Parents, please continue to reinforce good attendance habits with your son/daughter. Attendance and accuracy of attendance is extremely important in school. Excessive absences may result in missing work and ‘seat time’ in class, which is difficult to make up. Encourage your student to be on top of their missing assignments by making it a weekly habit to log-into Skyward. Many of our students find it helpful to upload the Skyward App on their phone, which makes it easier and more efficient to check their work and/or missing assignments. If you, or your student, feel they need additional academic support, please suggest to them the following: The after school Learning Center. Bus passes are available for students who visit the Learning Center. Anchor Class. This is time is a time to get academic support, make-up tests or missing assignments, and work on homework. Please encourage your student(s) to get a pass from a teacher so they can be sure to meet with them during their Anchor time on travel days. Communication with their teacher. Encourage your student(s) to take ownership of their learning by emailing or talking with teachers if they see an assignment is not entered or missing in Skyward. These are important skills to have in place when they leave high school. As an update on the progress of plans for the new high school, I am happy to report that our Educational Specification & Advisory Committee has been hard at work. Our team visited four comprehensive high schools earlier in January and came back ready to use these concepts to align them with the ideas and visions we elicited from our students, staff, and families of the Sehome community. In February, as part of the early stages in the design process, the architects will sit down with our staff to listen to their instructional vision and needs for the new building. Look for information later this spring when these ideas and concepts come to life in the preliminary sketches of the new Sehome High School. Be sure to check out all of the amazing activities, celebrations, events, and much, much more in this month’s Mariner Memo. Michelle Kuss-Cybula The Mission of Sehome High School The mission of Sehome High School is to support students in creating a vision for their future, realizing their potential, and cultivating their growth as contributing citizens of our world. We provide a learning environment that tends to students’ academic, social, emotional and behavioral development with provisions for individual learning styles and needs. Learning is the collective responsibility of the entire school community including students, their families, staff and community members. Student, Family, and Community Engagement Save the Date Attendance Reminders: All student absences must be excused within 48 hours of return to school. Parent notes, e-mails & phone calls are accepted. Call 676-6470 x5211 or email [email protected] To expedite the process of picking up your student for an appointment, send a note with him/her in the morning, or call/email the office. Your student will then receive a pass to leave class. All students should stop by the office to sign out before leaving campus! Need help logging into Skyward? Click here for information, or call 676-6470 ext 5205 for assistance. Parents, please remember to check in at the main office when picking up your student (if you haven’t sent a note, emailed or called; delivering an item for your student; or when visiting campus for any reason during school hours. Visitor parking is located near the cafeteria off Ferry Avenue. Please do not use the bus loop during the hours of 7:15-7:45 and 1:45-2:20. The purpose for Anchor travel days is to provide an opportunity for students to seek academic support from teachers and for teachers to call in students who they feel would benefit from more guidance and support. In order for a student to meet with a teacher who is not their Anchor teacher, the student must obtain a pass in advance of Anchor. Summer Opportunity and GAP Year Fair Thursday, Feb 11 during Anchor Attending a summer camp is a great way to build skills, meet new friends, and, oftentimes, earn college credit! A GAP year is a period of time between completing high school and beginning college when a student might choose to explore the world and/ or volunteer. The Assistance League of Bellingham will share information about their scholarship that can offset some of the cost of attending a summer academic camp. This event provides an opportunity for students to take charge of their education and future! Contact Martha Zender in the Career Center if you have questions. Having this event on the college campus during spring break allows students to experience a slice of college life. See Mrs. Zender in the Career Center for permission forms. We will need parent chaperones (you can sit in on presentations if your student is on the field trip.) Please phone Martha Zender at 676-6470 ext 5259 or email [email protected] and plan to complete the volunteer packet 3 days prior to the event. Laura Livingston, Coach and Forensics Advisor, Bellingham United Debate Club Communication—Collaboration—Caring I’d like to familiarize you with our Master Mariner and Good Samaritan Awards. These are two programs created to catch our students doing good things. The Good Samaritan Award is for turning in lost items of value such as keys, electronic devices, money, jewelry and other valuables. The student will receive a “Good Samaritan Certificate” with their name and our mission on it as well as a $5 gift card to a local business. The Master Mariner Award is different in that any adult in the building is invited to award a student for doing something good. These can include random acts of kindness such as helping another person, using kind words and maybe even just being a nice person in general. My goal is to catch the students doing good things and provide a little recognition for it. Students will be entered into a weekly drawing and their photo (if they let me) posted by our ASB office. Selected winners also receive Mariner Gear. Thank you PTSA for supporting this positive program and donating the gift cards and mariner gear. January Master Mariners Isaac Fox Gracie Henoch Darren Ma Jorge Prado Bellingham Schools, in collaboration with the Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival, will show the award-winning documentary Paper Tigers on February 25 at 7:00, with discussion to follow, at Sehome High School Little Theatre. Peggy, Campus Monitor I am thrilled to report that the BUDC team of Bryce Henshaw/Haley Reed (SHS) clawed their way to the elusive State Debate bid at the final District tournament by winning ALL of their six rounds, against impressive opposition. Their determination, dedication in writing a new case just two days before the tournament and their intensive prepping for cases on Common Core, bitcoin/moneylaundering legalization and export controls gained them and a lot of respect from other schools. BUDC has won every District tournament so far. Katie Clarke(SHS)/Hunter Renz (BHS) won Sedro-Woolley, Snohomish and Cedar Park and Bryce Henshaw/Haley Reed (SHS) won Kamiak. I don't recall that this has happened in the three years I've been coaching.
