Coaches vs. Cancer Event Raises $3,185!
Sehome’s Annual “Coaches versus Cancer” Northwest Conference doubleheader basketball games were once again a spectacular event. Thanks to the help of
Blaine High School’s Basketball Community (the school we were matched up against in
the games), we raised $3,185 for cancer research at St Joseph’s Cancer Center. The
night’s activities included a Silent Auction featuring donated items from local artists, businesses, and restaurants; Head Shaving sponsored by the Elysium Salon; and a Halftime
Half-Court Shot. All proceeds benefitted the evening’s charity event.
Honorary Coach for the evening was Dave Hageman, a retired (and missed) Sehome
teacher. Prior to the event, 7 of our Sehome staff member volunteered to have their hair
cut or shaved if enough funds were raised. A huge “THANK YOU!” to everyone who
was involved with this event in some way.
Scholarships Are Rolling In!
Encourage your student to check the scholarship bulletin
weekly for updates. A link to the bulletin can be found on
Sehome’s main web page under the Career Center’s
Scholarship tab under Counseling/Career Center.
Students should take every advantage to apply for scholarships
as it is free aid and reduces college debt!
Remind your student to check deadlines, as these are
concrete, and to follow application directions.

Immunity
Community Update!
This update has been prepared by
Immunity Community, a communitybased health organization.
Measles: Measles has been in the news a
lot lately, with the Disneyland outbreak. Here’s what you need
to know: Measles was eradicated from North America in 2000
but has been back in the news lately due to lower vaccination
rates. Nearly all outbreaks start with an unvaccinated individual
travelling abroad or having had foreign visitors. Measles is a
highly contagious infection that begins with a fever, cough,
runny nose and watery eyes. People often think they just have a
cold. These symptoms appear 7-14 days after you’ve been infected. With a few days, spots will appear in the mouth and, a
few days later, the person will break out with a rash. It is so
contagious that people with measles are asked to quarantine
themselves from others. The measles vaccine has very few side
effects and has been proven not to cause autism. After two
doses, one at around 12 months and one at around 4 years old,
most people will be immune to measles for life. You can always catch up with the vaccine, if you missed it, and a simple
blood test can be run to check your immunity status.

Fred Meyer Community Rewards Program
Fred Meyer donates about $600,000 quarterly to organizations within the communities where their stores are located.

Summer Opportunity
& GAP Year Fair
Thursday, Feb 19th
On February 19th, your student can check out the Summer
Opportunity and GAP Year Fair that will be held during
Anchor period. Local colleges and organizations that will
be offering summer academic camps, such as but not limited to, art, music, science, health care, technology and
leadership will be there. Attending a summer camp is a
great way to build skills, meet new friends, and often times,
earn college credit! The Assistance League of Bellingham
will also be present to share information regarding their
scholarship, worth up to $1,000 per student grades 9-11
planning to attend a summer academic camp. Organizations
offering GAP year experiences will also be participating. A
GAP year is a period of time between completing high
school and beginning college when a student might choose
to explore the world and/or volunteer. It is a time in which
a student can gain experience, learn more about his/her self
and pursue various fields of interest. There is a long list of
summer opportunities on the Career Center webpage.

CONGRATULATIONS SEHOME GIRLS BOWLING TEAM! !
The Sehome Girls Bowling Team placed 3rd at the District Tournament
on January 30th in Everett. Morgan Henry placed 5th as an individual and
will be going to Tacoma next Friday to compete in the State Tournament! We have had an outstanding first season . . . here's our roster if
you'd like to congratulate the girls:
Morgan Henry, Mallory Kruzich, Jessica Vaught, Gabby Gorosave,
Simone Hall, Carolyn Stewart, Dory Linneman, Kayla Thurman,
and Orchid Cassidy. The students are coached by Erin Furda.
Seniors’ Post-Graduation Trip to Lake Chelan
When: Depart Sehome at noon on Sunday, June 21, 2015; Return June 22nd.
Where: Lake Chelan.
What: Enjoy a dinner cruise aboard the Lady Express with DJ Bowling, overnight stay at
Darnell's Resort, continental
breakfast, and waterslides.
Cost:
$200 (approx.) Some scholarships are available. Trip costs can be offset with fami

Drama Spring Fundraiser
The Drama Program will be having a gala night fundraiser
on February 12th in partnership with the Bellingham
Theater Guild (BTG). Come watch BTG’s hysterical
spring comedy “Leading Ladies” (featuring Sehome
junior, Nick Schackel) while also supporting
Sehome! All proceeds go directly to the Drama Program

Each month the Bellingham School District partners with the
Whatcom Farm to School organization to feature a Whatcomgrown fruit or vegetable on the school lunch menu.
February will feature frozen raspberries on the

Dear Parent/Guardian:
We wanted to make you aware that Whatcom County is reporting an increase in the use of
synthetic marijuana or “spice.” Spice is smoked to get a high within 3-5 minutes, with a duration
from 1-8 hours depending on the amount taken. The health effects are extreme, and varied. Across
the country, many serious health issues are linked to smoking spice.
Although “spice” has been banned in several states, it is still legally sold in Washington.
“Spice” mixtures are easy to purchase at some convenience stores, some gas stations, and via the
internet and is sold under the brand names of: K2, Haze Yucatan Fire, Skunk, Moon Bliss, Blaze,
Skunk, and JWH-018. “Spice” is sold in small foil packets and is sold as incense or potpourri.
The Parents Matter advocacy group for Bellingham Public School is working on strategies to reach
out to businesses to stop the sale of these types of products.
Counselors at our school are also working with our students to inform them of the dangers
of “spice.”
