VS: Where’s the best boarding
you’ve ever done?
TR: Othe
Other than Jackson (Wyoming),
where I live, you have the crème de
la crème which is Alaska, or even
northern British Columbia, Canada. It’s
kind of challenging because it’s not
like you can just roll in and get it. You
have to put your time in and wait for
conditions to get right, and when it is
good, it gets no better. But, it’s pretty
hit and miss.
VS: How often do you board? Is it a
daily routine for you?
TR: When there’s snow, indeed. For
the most part, I’ll shred from midNovember to the beginning of May.
And a month or two in the summer
in the southern hemisphere, like
Argentina, Chile or New Zealand.
VS: Did you always board, or did you
start with skiing?
TR: I started skiing when I was like 2,
because I grew up here in Jackson. I
skied from when I was still in diapers
till I was 12. That was around the time
that I first snowboarded—and the last
time I skied.
VS: Do you remember your first time hopping
on a snowboard?
TR: It was frustrating. It’s crazy how sharp the
learning curve is from snowboarding. The first
couple of days you’re just like, “Why won’t this
work?” You try for a couple of days and you
start to figure out the way the edge works, you
scorpion (fall on your face and have your legs
and board kick up behind you like a scorpion’s
tail) a few times. Then in four days, you can pretty
much ride the whole mountain. You might be a
danger to anyone around you, but you still can
get around.
VS: Do you have any advice for young kids that
want to do what you do?
TR: I’d say, “Keep it fun.” If you’re not enjoying
this, then you’re doing something wrong. A
lot of other people who are really good at
snowboarding, doing tricks and competition
stuff, think that you have to just live in the
(terrain) park. I think that’s totally not the case. It’s
about getting better on your actual board, edge
to edge, and riding natural terrain, and the tricks
will come.
