The picture on an average TV looks like Times Square on steroids: too
bright and garish to seem anything like real life. That’s because default
settings for TVs are configured to make an impact on the sales floor of
your local electronics superstore, not necessarily in your living room.
Taking the steps below will enhance your viewing experience by making
the picture look more realistic.
Room Lighting
Before you make any of these adjustments, set the room lighting for
watching a movie. For bright plasmas and smaller direct-view sets, place
a dim light directly behind the TV and leave the rest of the room dark.
Look for special “daylight” bulbs that glow at 6,500 degrees Kelvin. You
should also prevent any light in the room from reflecting off the TV, as
glare will hamper image fidelity. Watching at night is best, but if you
watch during the day, thick curtains will really improve the picture.
Backlight
Reserved for LCD displays, backlight controls the intensity of light emitted
by the display, and it is usually set high by default. Lowering it can make
the image more watchable in a dark room, while setting it too low can
cause the picture to lose impact. The easiest way is to set the control
to its midpoint, then find a very bright sequence of video, such as a
hockey game, and watch for 10 minutes or so in your dim room. If you
experience eyestrain, lower it by 10 or 20 percent, and then watch again.
If not, keep it about 50 percent. Depending on your setup and sensitivity,
setting it at zero may work best.
Brightness
Also called black level, the brightness control actually adjusts how dark
the dark and black sections of the picture appear. Excessive brightness
can result in a two-dimensional, washed-out look, while low brightness
can compromise detail in shadows. To find the happy medium, watch a
scene that has a roughly equal amount of light and dark material. Turn up
the control all the way, then decrease until black sections begin to appear
black, as opposed to dark gray. If you notice a loss of shadow detail—for
example, when people’s eyes disappear into the depths under their
brows—then you’ve set brightness too low.
Contrast
Also called picture or white level, contrast controls the intensity of the
bright and white parts of the image. High contrast can obscure details
in bright areas, cause eyestrain in dim rooms and shorten the lifespan of
your television. Setting contrast too low robs the image of impact. To fix
it, display a still image of a white object with some visible details—such
as someone wearing a white button-up shirt. Adjust the control up all the
way, then reduce it until you can make out all the details, like the buttons.
Contrast set between 30 and 50 percent is usually best.
Color
Also called saturation, this control adjusts how intense the colors look.
Too much color makes the set look garish and unrealistic; too little color
diminishes the impact of the picture, making it look drab. First, set the
color-temperature control to the warmest option, then find an image of
someone with light, delicate skin tones, preferably a close-up of a face.
Turn up the color control until it looks like the person has sunburn, then
reduce it until the skin looks natural. If the rest of the colors look too drab,
you can increase color slightly at the expense of accurate skin tones.

an annual event where regular-season games are
played outdoors. The first Classic, held on January 1,
2008, had an NHL-record 71,217 fans in attendance.
The second, a year later, earned the highest
television ratings of any hockey game in 33 years.
“The reaction of our fans, and sports fans in
general, to the Winter Classic has been nothing
short of phenomenal,” Bettman said. “It’s an event
that is fun, entertaining and exciting. Perhaps
most of all, it captures the imagination. It takes
our game back to its roots. And in that regard,
it’s special to our players who participate in it,
because it conjures up days gone by when they
learned how to skate outdoors. There’s no surprise
that this event has become destination viewing
on a day that historically had been devoted to
college football.”
The event is not without its hitches. The NHL
invested in a travelling ice rink to keep tight
control over the unpredictable outdoor
conditions. But the hardest part of the Winter
Classic has become selecting the outdoor venue.

the recent economic downturn, the
NHL reported that season ticket
renewals were at 85% for the league
for the 2009–2010 season. While some
would find that surprising, Mr. Bettman said he
wasn’t surprised—but he was certainly grateful.

THE NHL KEEPS TECH-SAVVY FANS PLUGGED IN
Less than a decade ago, watching a hockey game on TV was rare. Today, fans have 24/7 access to
games, video, radio and news features. Has the sport gone overboard in its efforts to connect?
Not according to National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman, who says that the average
hockey fan’s appetite for information is not exactly “average.”
“We’re attempting to use all of our existing platforms in new and exciting ways because this is how
fans are consuming sports,” Bettman said in an exclusive interview with
Verizon Spotlight. “And we’re making sure we’re doing everything possible
to make that experience as robust as possible. Our fans tend to be the most
tech-savvy and broadband connected. We want to make sure that these fans
are getting the kind of content that is connecting them to the game and
giving them access they can’t get anywhere else.”
In his 17 years with the NHL, Bettman has overseen the league’s expansion
of modern technology to bring fans unprecedented access to the sport.
Besides partnering with NBC and VERSUS, the league reaches out on television through their own
NHL Network and the NHL® CENTER ICE® subscription package. Online they offer an interactive fan
community, 30 team Web sites, live games on NHL GameCenter LIVE™, even a Twitter account. But
Mr. Bettman’s one-of-a-kind weekly show, The NHL Hour on XM Satellite Radio’s NHL® Home Ice, has
become a hockey fan’s direct line to the league’s top employee.
And while Bettman’s tenure as NHL Commissioner has not always been without controversy, no one
