After gaining a place at Liverpool Art
College he went on to form Frankie Goes
to Hollywood and outsold all of his
contemporaries combined. Banned by the
BBC for its explicit sexual content, the
single Relax, with its outrageous video,
became one of the top ten best selling UK
hits of all time. He was the first artist ever
to break free from an unfair recording
agreement after a test case in the High
Court, with historic legal implications for
all artists’ contracts. In an interview with
the Times (1993) and in his best selling
autobiography A bone in my flute (1994),
he disclosed his HIV-positive status.
He exhibited his painting and collages with
his first solo show in 1997 at The Gallery in
Cork Street and has since exhibited at The
Royal Academy and The Liverpool Tate.
His second solo show at The Liverpool
Biennial in 2002, which included a
printmaking project completed at the
Royal College of Art, had the highest
attendance of the Independent strand.

paper. Tissue paper layered still reveals
something of what is hidden. This
discovery contributed to the creation
of my first installation in 1983 shown in the
Museum of Modern Art of Latin America,
Washington DC.”
“In the 1980s I discovered accidentally the
medium with which I created my artistic
identity: use of pastels on layers of tissue
It’s this medium that ensures that a Cinalli
is among the most instantly recognisable,
attributable works of contemporary art.

Sir Peter Blake attended Gravesend
School of Art and then the Royal College of
Art, where his contemporaries were Bridget
Riley and Frank Auerbach. One of the
leading pioneers of Pop art, his use of
imagery from comics, pin-up magazines
and consumer goods captures the essence
of his time. His work on album covers such
as Band Aid, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart
Club and Paul Weller's Stanley Road
helped to establish him firmly in the British
consciousness. Peter Blake was elected
RA in 1981, awarded a CBE in 1983, and
was knighted in 2002.
