What’s New
The quarterly “What’s New” occurred on Saturday,
October 10, and was very well attended. Breakfast goodies
included pancakes, sausages, and a special fruit salad.
Pia Louchios gave an excellent overview about recycling,
both in Los Lunas in general, and here at Jubilee. Plans are
underway for getting on site dumpsters for recyclables, to be
picked up by the Village.
J.O. Lopez discussed the community Color Guard, and
noted that the goal is to have a minimum of 8 participating
residents. He talked about the beauty of the New Mexico flag
and its symbol. J.O. raises and lowers the Villa’s outdoor United
States flag. He also mentioned that the flag life is generally about
four months, and that we have had homeowners donate them
from time to time.
Marcy said that anyone who is a veteran may submit a
photo to her for the ongoing project to have a Veteran’s Wall in
the Villa.
New residents were introduced. JoAnne Spurgeon on
Zuni River Circle moved here from Grants, NM, where she lived
for 50 years. Patti Tanis moved here from Colorado. She shares a
home on Jubilee Boulevard with her mom, Kelly Counter. Laurel
Neher, on Agave Court, hails from Minnesota and Colorado,
and loves the warmer weather. Tim Thorstenson and

From the Editor
As we bid farewell
to 2015, we extend a hearty
welcome to 2016! If the past
year is any indication, we have
a lot to look forward to once
again at Jubilee. We have
many new neighbors, who
have already attended events
and gotten into various games
and activities that take place
here. We anticipate having
more and more new residents
as the year unfolds.
Jubilee is a very
caring community. Every
year we have been known to
contribute to outside charities,
with our Craft Fair proceeds,
and individual donations
to children’s organizations
and various food drives.
Neighbors and friends are
always available to help each
other out in times of need, and
have done so ever since this
community started.
The beauty of Jubilee is
enhanced by an almost perfect
climate, scenery from our very
own open space, El Cerro, and
the distant mountain views.
More times than not, we
mention to each other how we
never cease marveling at our
good fortune, for having found
this lovely community.

Halloween Party
Jubilee celebrated Halloween, on October
31, with a very tasty dinner, followed by a
performance from the Rio Grande Players.
The meal consisted of chicken breast, mashed
potatoes, gravy and rolls. Residents brought
side dishes and salads; there was chocolate
pudding, and apple slices coated with caramel and
chocolate for desserts. All in all, very yummy!
Over 100 residents and guests attended,
and enjoyed the show, which consisted of two
radio broadcast scripts with story themes very
appropriate for the Halloween holiday.
The Villa was decorated festively and
appreciation goes out to Marcy, the Queen Bee,
and her “swarm”, appropriately dressed for the
occasion in bee costumes.

Roadside 66 Concert & Dance
Wow! What a way to say goodbye
to daylight savings time on November 1!
The Jubilee Roadside 66 band delighted
over 50 residents and guests to a wonderful
afternoon poolside performance, with music
to dance to. And dance we did for 2-1/2
hours. The weather was perfect, as well.
This group of musicians and singers
consists of Don Ensminger, John Kilby, Rick
North, Eberhardt Privitzer, Tom Teeter, and
Patsy Whiting. With the weather turning
colder pretty soon, they wanted to give
us another outdoor opportunity to enjoy
listening to them and dancing to our hearts’
content. We are so fortunate to have this
group here at Jubilee! Such events continue

to bond friendships and we look forward to
their next performance very, very much.

turkey, stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pie and whatever
other treats were presented by Marcy and a few
helpers. Just another evening meal to share with
friends and neighbors, and to be thankful for in
our Jubilee community.

Thanksgiving Day Potluck
I extend a great big thank you to my
co-hosts and all the people who helped set
up and clean up for our annual Thanksgiving
Day pot luck dinner. The HOA budget
bought two turkeys, one cooked by Sharon &
John O’Connell and one by Bob Lacourciere
and me, plus a ham cooked by Pia Louchios. Kit Nelson & Mike Madziarek also donated
and cooked a turkey so we had plenty of
meats. Sharon & John and Bob & I also made
stuffing and gravy, while other residents
brought mashed potatoes, yam casseroles,
green bean casseroles, pumpkin pie, and too
many other dishes and desserts to remember. If any of the 45 or so homeowners, and
the few guests, went home hungry - it was
certainly not due to any lack of food. It was
another successful event with the wonderful
bounty of food and the camaraderie of this
great Jubilee community. Myra Barker

Christmas Lights at Jubilee
Once again, Brett and Amelia Crowther,
along with a host of helpers, decorated the Jubilee
community with a vast array of Christmas lights.
Trees and bushes were lit up, as well as all kinds of
display pieces such as snowmen, Santas, carolers
and snowflakes. Entering our community and
going to the Villa was a sight to behold! Many
thanks to Brett, Amelia and everyone else who
made this another very merry holiday season here
at Jubilee.

the holiday season. Marcy organized treats
for us, as well - cookies, cocoa, coffee and
gingerbread. We were also treated to Christmas
carols sung beautifully for us by Mary Morton.
The tree was decorated with a variety of
ornaments donated by residents, as well as a
glorious assortment of traditional ones. As soon
as you enter the Villa at this time of year, the
warmth and beauty is so inviting.

El Camino Real is the earliest EuroAmerican trade route in the United States,
spanning three centuries. We learned a lot on
the self-guided tour, and took advantage of
the overlook showing the trail as it is today, an
historical site.
We then ventured to the Bosque del
Apache to enjoy the birdlife that is prevalent
there at this time of year. Migrating sandhill
cranes, geese, and other waterfowl, gather at
the Bosque for the winter months, and they
are absolutely gorgeous! There can be eagles
and hawks in evidence all year long. Marilyn
and Glenn Bentley have started the field trip
experience here at Jubilee, and we are truly
grateful for their making this another very
interesting and enjoyable day.

Holiday Party
On the evening of December 19,
approximately 160 residents attended the
holiday season’s celebration dinner. Tables were
set up throughout the Villa, and extended out
to the patio under a tent. The centerpieces were
very sweet, and there was a slide show on the
TV, with photos of the events that took place
over the year. It featured many, many residents,
and brought back very fond memories.
We placed our tickets in a beautiful glass
bowl, from which names were drawn and gifts
given out. Poinsettias and other seasonal items
were awarded.
The catering was really delicious - salad
started the meal off, followed by folks visiting
the dinner buffet tables. Main dishes included
pork and salmon with sides of many different
vegetables, and very tasty rolls. Desserts were
delectable petit fours.
We mingled and enjoyed each other’s
company very much. All our thanks go out
to Marcy and her team of helpers who made
this another truly memorable, wonderful
experience here at Jubilee!

Christmas Eve Soup Night with
Vern and Kellie Turner
This event, originally started by Vern and
Kellie, is very special. The name of the event
will remain the same as it always
has, even though Vern is no longer with us.
Betty McKeehan and Kathie & Tom Teeter
co-hosted with Kellie this year, and residents
provided 14 different kinds of soup. Salads,
breads, and desserts were also plentiful for the
approximately 80 people who attended. This has
always been a popular event, and gives soupmakers the opportunity to bring out favorite
soup recipes for all to enjoy. A big thanks to
Kellie and Betty and everyone who assisted
them on this special night before Christmas.

Christmas Day Potluck
On Christmas day, Pam Witt hosted a
traditional Christmas dinner of turkey, ham
and all the fixings, with cooking assistance from
Carol Salvagio. The turkey, ham and dessert were
provided by HOA funds, and the 25 or so residents
attending brought all the side dishes. It was a very
easygoing, friendly way to have Christmas Day
dinner with neighbors. Thanks so much to Pam for
hosting this annual event. As usual, those attending
stepped up to assist setting up and cleaning up,
with a delicious meal enjoyed in between.

New Year’s Eve
The New Year’s Eve party, hosted by Dory
Murray with the assistance of Jerrie Smith, was
attended by about 26 residents, which made for
a very cozy and intimate evening. Pizza was the
main fare with plenty of snacks, salads, and desserts
to round off the menu. Various games were played
throughout the night; people challenged one
another with ‘Apples to Apples,’ ‘Catch Phrase’, and
‘Smart Ass’. Lots of fun and laughter were definitely
the order of the night.
Our own Jubilation Quartet was actually a
quintet this time, with Don Ensminger rounding
out the group. The five men entertained, singing
the prerequisite ‘Auld Lang Syne’, and ended with
Volunteer Experiences
Eileen Tomczyk volunteers at the
VA Office of Performance Evaluation,
which involves doing reviews of patients’
experiences regarding time spent with
doctors, nurses and staff, in an effort
to improve services at the VA clinics in
Albuquerque. This is a fairly new program;
Eileen has been doing it for approximately
a year, once a week for 2-1/2 hours each
session. Eileen is really glad that among
the various service programs available, she
chose the DAV to receive credit for her
volunteer hours.
There are about six other people

received, this important volunteer assignment
has definitely resulted in better services overall.
Eileen also gives helpful information
to clients to enable better communication
with the system such as patient advocacy and
computer access to their online medical care.
The VA is always looking for volunteers;
the reward for doing this is knowing you have
made a difference.
You hear about situations that arise
in the hospitals and clinics that make you
feel good. One story involved a woman who
was in the waiting room while her husband
was having heart surgery. During her wait,
she herself had a heart attack, and her life
was saved right there by the health care
professionals that took charge. Wow!
If anyone is interested in pursuing a
volunteer opportunity with the VA, call 505256-2771 to learn more. People can serve in
many capacities such as reading to patients,
coffee service, etc. Volunteering, in general,
has proven to be a very positive experience,
and people are always needed to help out in all
kinds of ways.

Carol will be working with a 13-year old
girl. The service is provided to children who are
in foster care. Those who are above the age of 8
will most likely remain in foster care until they
are 18 years old. Some children may transfer
from one foster home to another, depending
on circumstances. Should a transfer take place,
Carol will remain with the same child. This is
for the benefit of the child and his or her needs.
Advocates like Carol are given the legal
credentials to talk with the child’s school,
social worker, & medical professionals. The
main focus is to build a relationship with the
client, maintain continuity, and uphold trust.
The advocate also reports to the court system
regarding the child’s welfare. The judge relies
heavily on the advocate’s recommendations.
Carol learned about this opportunity
and program through an article in the Valencia
News Bulletin. She can devote eighteen hours
a month, maintaining contact with the child
and professionals as necessary. Carol’s young
client may always call on her whenever the need
arises.
Carol is very much looking forward to
participating in this very vital service. If anyone
is interested in doing this, you may call 505352-3480. There is a local Los Lunas office, and
help is always needed.

volunteer job in
January, having completed all the requirements
needed to become a Court Assigned Special
