Eastbourne Residential Olympic Paint & Plate Competition May 21st we all set off to the Congress Hotel for 4 nights. What a glorious sunny week we all enjoyed. Tuesday and Wednesday we enjoyed visits to Tunbridge Wells, Penhurst Manor House, Battle of Hastings. Our evenings were spent dancing or playing bingo which our student Dan assisted with. Our holiday was made even better by the staff of the hotel, all of whom went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. Our coach driver Gavin became one of us as did all the other guests who took the students to their hearts and commented “they had made their holiday”. Many photos were taken and they will be on display soon for all to enjoy. Chris Burton Traxx @ 2b 90s disco The Art Group at W2W have been busy designing plates for a competition being run by Wedgewood Visitor Centre As the winning entry will be painted onto a plate by a Wedgewood artist the students are keen to produce something really special The plates are to commemorate the Olympic Games and the design has to include the following items Olympic Rings, Olympic Torch, an Olympic Sport, an Olympic Medal and a London landmark, results to be announced so watch this space! The club is run by a lady called Jasmine who is a qualified coach who is very helpful and friendly. First we do some warm-up exercises then we have a game of football I was the goalkeeper for one side and we won 4-0. Everybody had a great time if you want to join speak to Kelly. On behalf of everybody on the 101 club committee we would like to say a big thank you for making another disco a successful and enjoyable night, also a big thank you to our resident DJ Tim Brady and to the co DJ’s James Hughes and Chad, and to our dance music DJ James O’Rourke for banging out some classic unforgettable 90s dance tunes!! We are currently planning our next event and we would welcome any requests or suggestions for future events kind regards James O’Rourke and Amy Barrett, chairpersons and all of the 101 club committee. Thanks again to all who came! See you again on the dance floor! (James Hughes) Cricket After 2 weeks of torrential rain we were at last able to start our cricket. We met Margaret our cricket coach who was going to take the students for training this term. We first went to the cricket pavilion for introductions and talked about the health and safety of playing cricket and the basic rules of the game, as it was a cold day we did some warm up exercises such as running and stretching. We then split up into two teams and tossed a coin to see who would bowl first. The game started with both teams scoring runs but the winning team scored 20 runs before bad light stopped play. Back then we were treading very carefully with little resources in staff or facilities, and very few students. Now when I look at the list of activities just for the summer term, it’s really amazing how things have changed. We had a residential in May to Eastbourne, our signed choir performed at Greenhill special school; Club 101 had their AGM to complete another very successful year. June started with a Jubilee day at the project, which was really enjoyable. For the first time we had a stall at the Stone festival in Westbridge park. This July we had the grand opening of the Friendship garden at Summerfield Court, and even though the weather tried to spoil it, we had a great time. Well done to all the staff and volunteers and students who made it possible. Special mention for Janet Mason and the ladies who made the cakes. We said goodbye to Amy Jones our trainee social worker who has returned to Uni. Pleased to say that Alison Lloyd and Alison West are now associate members of the Federation of Small Business and along with Mike West are keeping up to date with all things pertaining to looking after our staff with regards to employment law. In June we completed 24 weeks of dancing for our students with Barbara Litchfield who competed in the world ballroom championships. All the students loved it, (and also the staff). We were pleased to be able to fund this through the project initially to find out if it was successful. Hopefully we can carry on in the future, if we can find other funding. Visitors were treated to a guided session of making a stunning Diamond Jubilee celebration card. Full instruction was followed from a guidance sheet and each visitor was supported by very able and confident members of the Clifford Cards Team. Visitor’s comments were extremely complimentary they recognized the high professional standards each student had reached. They were amazed at all our efforts and impressed by the number of outlets in the local community who sell our exciting range of Clifford Cards. Sessions are available to all students who attend at the Clifford Project and Trinity Skills for Life. I have been a volunteer for around two years now and those hours were always a highlight in my week. Being on staff has been like becoming part of a family - sensing all the teamwork, hard work, commitment and at times lots of craziness! I feel I am learning so much from students, and more experienced staff. It’s good to be asking lots of questions!. I am looking forward to the fantastic Jubilimpics variety show being worked so hard on by all the wonderfully talented Performing Arts students. And thanks to the special hair and beauty girls for welcoming me so kindly! ing old ch h on Tor Sim mpic Oly Since January we have been very privileged to have Barbara Litchfield a former world finalist dancer of Premier Dance Studio Longton coming in every Thursday afternoon to teach dance to our young people. They have been learning ballroom, latin, line dance and St Bernard Waltz etc. The students have been having great fun and really progressing...quite literally in the barn dance. Three of our young people on 25th March were entered for two social dance exams (Alistair Smith, Simon Lewis and AnnMarie Hordell) which is quite a nerve racking ordeal but all three were tremendous and passed with flying colours, they attended an awards ceremony on May 19th to collect their certificates and trophies. The young people displayed some of their dancing skills recently whilst on holiday in Eastbourne and watch this space as we would love to be able to hold tea dances in the community. The students held a Jubilee party on Friday 1st June at the Clifford Project, we decorated the car park with bunting and flags and the students took part in a variety of games and activities including a treasure hunt, egg and spoon race and obstacle course. The day ended with a Jubilee buffet and speeches from the students overall a big success. I stack the shelves, having cleaned them first and also tidy the freezers, which is very nice on a hot summer’s day. I finish work at about 2.00pm and return to the project. (Alison West) (Kelly Morton) (By Dan Alcock) (Katie Hagemeijer) A Day at the Co op We also had a visit from an Olympic torch bearer and all the students were able to have their photo taken holding the Olympic torch. I report to the boss called Carol who is very friendly. I travel to work by bus. Club 101’s Friendship Project is drawing to an end now. It has been a year-long project which was funded by the Staffordshire County Council Community Wellbeing Fund. It has been an outstanding success and all of our students should be congratulated for their hard work and creativity. The opening of the Friendship Garden at Summer Field Court on July 4th was the culmination of many months work; and we had a successful open day with many admiring visitors. (see photos). On Wednesday August 1st there will be another open day when the Stone Library window made by the students in their glasswork sessions over the year. This beautiful piece of work will be in permanent place in the library so if you can’t make the event (between 11 and 1pm); then please pop into the library at any time (it’s open on Saturdays and closed on Wednesday afternoons). Our next project is imminent! We will be making 2 art installations for the town of Stone to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee year. Watch this space for more details! Club 101 fundraising committee.
