2014 JUBILEE ROAST OF JOE THEISMANN
This year’s Roast was another great success! More
than 490 people attended the Jubilee Roast of former
Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Joe Theismann, at
the North Bethesda Marriott Hotel and Conference
Center on May 8, 2014.
We greatly appreciate all the support that our
sponsors provided. A special thank you goes to our
lead sponsors, DARCARS Automotive Group and
Kaiser Permanente. An estimated $110,000 in net
proceeds from the event will benefit Jubilee.
The Master of Ceremonies for the 2014 Jubilee Roast
was Larry Michael, the “Voice of the Washington
Redskins.” Roasters included: Jeff Bostic, former
Washington Redskins Center, and original member
of the famed “HOGS” offensive line; Mark Moseley,
legendary Washington Redskins Kicker and
former NFL MVP; and Rick “Doc” Walker, former
Washington Redskins player and NFL Super Bowl
champion and media personality.
The Roasters had some fun telling stories and jokes
about Joe, and at the end, he got his chance to
respond to their barbs.
Joe closed by saying that he has learned over the
years that “life is not just about me, but it is about
giving back, and that is what we are doing here
tonight, giving back to a charity that does very
important work.”

both raise money for the
work that we do and to
tell our story to a larger
audience. The theme of
this year’s Roast had to do
with exercise and fitness.

the pinnacle of fitness. In
our video we featured one of our clients, Sam, who is
enthusiastic about his own fitness and teaching fitness to
others. During the Roast, Sam came forward and joined
John Darvish to lead the audience in some arm exercises.

One of our strategic initiatives this year is client and
employee wellness. We have partnered with Jared Ciner
and his S.P.I.R.I.T. Club to offer exercise classes to our
clients and employees; these classes also include a focus
on nutrition. We have joined a national group of faithbased health care providers in forming a self-insured health
insurance company. A component of being part of this
company is participating in a robust wellness program.
We are wearing pedometers to measure our steps, and
getting e-mails with fitness tips every day.
I am retiring from Jubilee as of May 23, 2014 and
want to tell you all how much I have enjoyed working
with you over these 18 years, and getting to know our
clients.
It has been a true blessing to be here. Now I am looking
forward to more time to spend with all my family &
friends, to read, exercise and do gardening and church
work. Best wishes to all of you.

Being fit is a win for everyone. We all want to feel better
and look better. Being fit means fewer sick days and
fewer health claims; it means more productive employees.
We all want to be fit, and it is easier to achieve that
outcome when we work at it together.
Barbara and Steve Schmidt’s son, Christian, will
graduate from the IB Program at Richard Montgomery
on June 11th. He will be attending Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh starting this fall where he will be
studying Mathematics and Finance.

The
Aurora
is located in North
Bethesda and houses
an estimate of 350
units. Richard Ivanovich (pictured far right in group) along with roommate

and the community’s first residents to occupy the high
rise.
The building is equipped with handicapped
accessible living areas, a workout room, pool and
game room and will feature a completed gardenstyle park, including a grill for family and friends’
entertainment, which Ivanovich’s bedroom window
happens to overlook. What a view!
The County Executive included $669,382 in
his FY15 budget to increase direct service worker
salaries and then the County Council added an additional $287,440. Additionally, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration is including a 4%
rate increase in our funding starting January 1st. This will mean that all of our direct service employees will get at least a $.40 cent an hour increase
starting in January. Our lowest paid position now
makes $10.25 an hour, so this will take that starting hourly rate up to $10.65. The minimum wage
in Montgomery County will increase to $11.50
an hour in four years. This puts us on-track to meet
this minimum wage, but our goal in four years is to
have an average direct service wage of 130% of
minimum wage.
The actions of our elected officials at the State
and County level have helped us move toward this
very important goal. Please thank them for their
actions when you have an opportunity.

Ayomikun Oworu-Oseni, born on April 16, 2014.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
February
Clients celebrated Valentine’s Day at our annual Valentine’s Day Dance at
Georgetown Prep. Prep students volunteered to help set up and clean up after
the event, and they did an outstanding job dancing and socializing with the
clients. It was a fun time for all.
Special THANKS to Janeice Green and Tammy Morton Johnson for helping
to put together the event.

We were delighted to restart our partnership with the National Institutes of Health, Office of Intramural Training and Education, which brings its fellows to volunteer at Jubilee. This year, the group will work at several Jubilee homes on a range of
beautification projects and they will visit and spend time with our clients.

Thanks to the fantastic volunteer members of our
Roast Planning Committee, Silent Auction Committee, and to the members of our Boards of Directors.
Your advice and your help in planning and marketing the event , increasing sponsorships and ticket
sales, soliciting and collecting items for the Silent
Auction, decorating the tables at the event, and talking with new guests so that they could learn about
Jubilee and our work helped us tremendously. The
2014 Jubilee Roast of Joe Theismann was a success because of wonderful supporters like you. Thank you very much.

Annapolis again this year. He
served as an excellent self-advocate for respect. Good job!

enjoys his bike riding club,
and visiting his family. Foster has a promising new job
opportunity.
Sarah Glenner has been thinking a lot about her mom, and
she misses her. She requests
that her friends at Jubilee please
say a prayer of remembrance or dedication for her
mom, Joyce S. Glenner.
Marcello Tonini enjoys calling his mom, visiting thrift stores, and visiting community
malls. Marcello enjoys activities with his friends very much.
Kobina Cudjoe has a new
tutor and counselor, Brian
Wong. Kobi is enrolled in
swimming, and he loves it.
STAFF HAPPENINGS
Henrietta Carter visited family members in Georgia
and had a nice time.
Kobi visits his mother in
Virginia often on Saturdays.
Kendra Tappin, who has worked with Jubilee for two
years as our Volunteer Maryland Coordinator, will begin a new job in D.C. in her field of study, creating
policy to support the prevention of violence against
women and children. Congratulations, Kendra!

NEWS FROM CAMELLIA
NEWS FROM HOME
Meg Spaniol always loves to join her friends/housemates
for a weekend at Ocean City, Maryland in the summer.
She attends Slow and Easy Aerobics exercise class every
Monday night. Meg loves to spend time with her father,
whom she calls “a father and a friend.” Meg and her
father spent the Memorial Day weekend together. Meg is
very proud of her father, Joe, who served the USA during
World War II.
Kathleen Fitzgerald loves to help in the kitchen washing
fresh apples for snacks and rearranging utensils. She
spends her leisure hours working tirelessly on puzzle
pieces and beads. She smiles each time she completes
a puzzle or project unaided. Kathleen loves to hang
around with her brother, whom she loves to call “My
Friend.” She also has good stamina to walk at Wheaton
Regional Park.
Sheldon Jenkins, Kelly Robinson, and Steve Morrell
of Cannon Road enjoy getting together for dinner.
Linda Hanna loves to spend time at Wheaton Plaza,
shopping and hanging around with the mother, Ms. Jean.
Linda never misses an evening chatting with her mother
before retiring to bed. Linda loves her mother and spends
every weekend with her. Linda also attends the Rockville
Support Center and participates in most of their indoor
and outdoor activities. Ordering Chinese food is one of
her favorites after an outdoor activity.
Cheryl Suit appears to enjoy the indoor garden at Wheaton Regional Park. Cheryl likes to observe, touch and
smell blooming flowers inside the greenhouse. A leisurely
walk in the mall appears to be her favorite activity. Assisting her to walk through the mall makes her day. The
music of the Beach Boys Surfin’ USA is her favorite. Her
friend Johnny at Blessed Sacrament Church helped her
color the fruit of JOY at the Faith & Light Meeting.
Ben Collins helped to demonstrate exercises with
S.P.I.R.I.T. Club for some of the photos and footage
used in the video shown at the 2014 Jubilee Roast of
Joe Theismann.
The song “Happy” makes everybody happy at Camellia.
During the rainstorm, the television signal was malfunctioning; the radio music was a hit. Meg, Cheryl, Linda,
Kathleen and staff had an impromptu “dance to the music” moment.
Margie is back from Michigan. Hawa and Cheryl have
a long list of fun and meaningful activities in the community. Marian took her time and talent to organize the
residents’ bedrooms, which are looking good. Mamie
makes sure lunch bags are packed and joins the residents
to watch their favorite movie before bedtime. Camellia is
a place called HOME.
Jared Ciner presented Unity Team Program Manager,
Sakiru Salami, a certificate for completion of the last
Biggest Winner competition, part of Jubilee’s Wellness
Initiative.

Faye Norwood
is the resident
“social
butterfly.”
Faye
celebrated her
60th
birthday
in March with
a big bash at
the Jubilee office
with her friends
and family. Her
family came in big numbers to celebrate with her and to
show how much they love her. They brought many gifts!
In her pink dress and tiara, the birthday princess danced
the night away, and she was very happy. She received a
birthday gift from her friend, Brian.
Spring is not all about allergy season. Spring is rebirth!
Curtis, Kate, Max and Jordan were thrilled to see the cherry blossoms across from the Holocaust Museum, and they
watched marathon participants at the Smithsonian Mall and
kites flying like birds in the sky.
Curtis Cooper makes sure every Sunday to be ready and
dressed for church service. Curtis, staff and his roommates
went to Washington, D.C. to watch the Rock and Roll marathon. He attended the Science & Technology Expo at the
Washington Convention Center. It was a wow moment –
lots of gadgets and innovative tools on display. His friend
Patrick invited him to eat out. Curtis has lots of friends. His
friend Peter fixed his bicycle’s flat tire. John Darvish, President & CEO DARCARS Automotive Group, invited Curtis to
join him and his wife at Jubilee Roast. Curtis winds down
to WHUR music of rhythm and blues.
Gloria O’Connell celebrated her 75th birthday on March
28th. She requested and had a birthday dinner at Friendly’s Restaurant with her friends. Her family sent her gifts.
She was very
happy when her
sister, Karen, sent
her two new hats
that she asked
for in addition to
the gifts her sister
brought for her.
Gloria has been
enjoying her People magazine. She looks through it and shares the pictures
with staff and her housemates.
Max Poznerzon enjoys riding the subway and Metro bus to
Washington, D.C. He does not mind walking to Glenmont
station to catch the subway. Max was glued to the photography about Broadway on display at the National Portrait
Gallery. He watched all the trailers of popular Broadway
shows and a documentary film on the Alvin Ailey Ballet.
Max went to the Verizon Center to check the basketball
score of the Wizards and the Pacers and relaxed with a
cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee near the arena.
Jordan Gould listens to his country music radio station every
day. He had a birthday brunch with his family and received lots of gifts. He attended the Jubilee Roast. He has
swift feet for long walks. He toured the entire STEM Expo
at the Washington Convention Center and had a picture
taken behind the planet Earth. Jordan lit the Peace Lamp at
the Hyattsville Mennonite Church.
Megan Hornbostel was happy to spend time at home with
her parents on March 1st.
She has been keeping busy
and fit with Zumba, Slow and
Easy Aerobics, swimming,
and the S.P.I.R.I.T. Club classes. Megan enjoys going to
the movies. She celebrated
her housemates’ birthdays
with them in March. Megan
states that she is happy living
at Milestone.
Kate Whitmore keeps up her good housekeeping values.
She helped out tirelessly to keep the kitchen spic and span.
During the Disability Sunday at the Hyattsville Mennonite
Church, she read the prayer, “Fruits of the Holy Spirit,” with
Curtis. She put on a pink shirt to join the maddening crowd
at the tidal basin to look at the cherry blossoms at their
peak.
Kate, Max, Curtis and Jordan cannot wait to continue the
spring to summer adventures to museums, Union Station,
Kennedy Center Millennium shows, and to stroll along the
boardwalk at the National Harbor.
The ladies were happy to get a new flat screen TV with
money they received as a Christmas gift. They enjoy
watching their favorite shows and movies together.

Paula Lang and Tom Lee had a wonderful time at a church cookout for
Memorial Day. We ate and enjoyed
meeting people and Tom danced with
all the ladies and Paula ate all the fruit
and veggies her stomach could hold!
Tom Lee had a
great time visiting with his sister
in March.
The men at St. Rose House have been keeping very
busy!
Tom enjoyed time out for lunch with
Doris Decte to say goodbye.
Anthony Pedone celebrated his 50th birthday, and he
got a fabulous new blue tricycle as a gift! He loves to
ride his new trike.

NEWS FROM SANDY RIDGE
Edward Hyson is affectionately known as “Mr. Ed, Resident Chief.” He keeps staff informed of all things at
Sandy Ridge Road. He is really enjoying retirement
these days, preferring to shop, eat out and watch his
Orioles baseball team. If they aren’t playing, he roots
for the Nats.
James L’Heureux enjoyed the PCR Beach Party.
Brian Lyman celebrated his 59th birthday with a party
at the home of his sisters and brothers. He brought
back cake and goodies to share with his housemates.
He looks forward to all parties, picnics, and vacation.
Stephen Roldan has enjoyed the visits by members
of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church for dinners each
week. Stephen and his housemates especially enjoyed the visit by one family with a dog!
Lisa Zimmermann has regained all the weight she lost
during her illness, and she looks and feels great. She
looks forward to dinner with her father and weekends
with her mom. She works on the Smart Snacks crew,
delivering packages of snacks to three area schools.
Go Lisa!
The St. Rose House Support Committee created a
schedule for parishioners to join the staff and residents
for dinner each Thursday so that they could get to
know one another better.

Laura Elrod is the newest resident at Sandy Ridge Road.
She likes to dance, and to make everyone laugh. We
welcome her lively spirit at SRR!
Shakia Swinton always has a big smile for everyone,
despite her knee pain and mobility issues. She loves
shopping and socializing with her peers. She also
joined the S.P.I.R.I.T. Club, and she enjoys working out.

NEWS FROM HOME
June 2014
Jubilee by laws require that Board members rotate off
after 9 years of service. It is always hard to see high
quality board members leave, but there is wisdom in the
provision—new Board members bring new perspectives,
new capabilities, and keep Jubilee on the cutting edge of
service provision to adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. (And, to tell the truth, we work Board
members pretty hard, and they may need a break after 9
years!) In our June meeting, the Board approved two new
members.

Daniel L. Miller holds a PhD in molecular
biology from Princeton University and works at the
Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Daniel’s
commitment to serving persons with disabilities was
shaped by his parents’ work in drug and alcohol
rehabilitation during the heroin epidemic of the
1960s and ‘70s and by their subsequent care giving, in which Daniel and his siblings shared, for
disabled and elderly individuals. Daniel attends
Hyattsville Mennonite Church, which founded Jubilee
and continues to provide institutional partnership.
•Carol S. Fried holds a Masters in social work from
the University of Michigan and works as an adult
psychotherapist in private practice. She brings to
Jubilee extensive background in the field of service to
persons with disabilities, having served for several
years as president of the Board of the Arc,
Maryland. Carol is already well integrated into
Jubilee, having served as a member of the Jubilee
Housing Advisory Committee since 2012.
On April 4th the Social Club STARS group went downtown to walk around the National Mall. We walked
from the National Museum of the American Indian to
the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and back! It was a
beautiful night and the cherry blossoms were just beginning to bloom.
NEWS FROM ST. PETER’S
Donna Fluke leaves the Jubilee Board after nine years of
service, including two as Board President. Among Donna’s many contributions to Jubilee, two stand out for me.
She represented and reflected concerns of parents and
other family members of those who receive Jubilee services, and worked to strengthen their voice and Jubilee’s
attention to their concerns. She was eminently qualified
in these efforts, as her son and daughter receive services
from Jubilee. A second focus as Board president was to
increase Board members’ understanding and appreciation of one another. This team-building has strengthened
the Board and helped to mobilize all Board members’
contributions. Although Donna is leaving the Board, we
are happy that she will continue to work on maintaining and improving Jubilee’s communication with Jubilee
families.
Mary Anne Fazio invited me to her brother’s lake house
in Deep Creek on April 18th. I had a great time! We
went to the Casselman River Bridge, Spruce Artisan Village, Deer Park where the spring water used to come
from, Swallow Falls State Park, Oakland and Kitzmiller.
It was so much fun to see what western Maryland looks
like! Thank you, Mary Anne and family!
