THE GAUSELMANN
GROUP
A successful family business from
Eastern Westphalia
The Gauselmann Group has developed after 58 years from
a one-man-business at the beginning to an international
company that employs about 8,500 staff and generated
a volume of business of over 1.9 billion euros in the 2014
business year. The trademark of the group of companies is
the laughing Merkur sun, Germany’s most popular amusement and gaming symbol that is also increasingly becoming
a synonym for modern ‘made in Germany’ leisure entertainment beyond the German borders.
The company founder Paul Gauselmann laid the
business foundation stone in 1957 when he began to operate juke boxes in his spare time. The move to complete
entrepreneurial self-employment followed in 1964 – at this
time Paul Gauselmann already employed over 15 staff.

The ‘invention’ of the modern arcade from 1974 in the
form of MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK was one of the most important milestones in the company history. The first own
branch was opened in Delmenhorst in Lower Saxony. It
greatly stood out against conventional machine halls due
to its special design concept – spacious rooms, modern
machines that always offered the best games and a
pleasant atmosphere similar to the level of a 3 to 4 star
hotel. Today, the Gauselmann Group operates approximately 500 modern entertainment centres in Europe, more
than 230 of which are located in Germany.
The first gaming machine developed and produced
by Paul Gauselmann was called the ‘Merkur B’ and was
brought to market in 1977 after four years development
time. The ‘Merkur B’ offered exciting entertainment with
its innovative games system and enthused players. Ever
since this first gaming machine, more than two million

entertainment gaming machines with and without stakes
and prizes have been produced and sold and/or rented.
The machines only offered one type of game in the early
stages. Today the multi-gamers provide up to 200 ultramodern games making use of touchscreen technology.

of ‘Merkur B’
In the years to follow, the Gauselmann Group advanced to become the clear market leader in Germany.
The group of companies has established itself also in
international markets ever since the beginning of the
1990s and has been catching attention with games and
technologies that are ‘made in Germany’. The decision to
exploit new business fields was taken at the turn of the
millennium. Thus, the Gauselmann Group entered into
the liberalised sports betting market in 2006.
The greatest acquisition in company history was
made in 2012 by the group of companies upon purchasing the British arcade chain Praesepe that employs
approximately 1,500 staff and operates about 170 entertainment centres in Great Britain.

The group of companies also made history in 2013:
Alongside launching its first own licensed online casino
in Schleswig-Holstein under www.merkur-spielcasino.de
by its subsidiary Cashpoint, the casino approval for
Saxony-Anhalt was a considerable milestone. Together
with the Stadtcasino Baden AG, the Gauselmann Group
launched its first Merkur Spielbank in Leuna-Günthersdorf in December 2014.

Company founder Paul Gauselmann not only has
the interests of the Gauselmann Group with its entire
staff at heart but also those of the complete German
amusement and gaming machine industry as well. He
has been active in a leading role since 1966 in various
industry associations and keeps continual contact with
politics and society. He has headed up the ‘Verband
der Deutschen Automatenindustrie’ (VDAI – German
Amusement and Vending Machine Industry Association)
for over 34 years now.
Alongside his commitment to the gaming machine industry, the company founder shows untiring
service for cultural, social and sporting initiatives in his
home region of Eastern Westphalia. He was honoured
with the German Federal Cross of Merit for this in
1993. Ten years later, he received the higher-graded
First Class of the German Federal Cross. In addition
to this, he was awarded with honorary citizenship in both
Espelkamp and Lübbecke on his 70th birthday.
For decades, Paul Gauselmanns’ four sons have been
playing an active role in the success of the group of companies. Peter Gauselmann, eldest son and computer science
graduate, was assigned in the 1980s in building up the
computer department – what is today BEIT Systemhaus.
Business studies graduate Michael Gauselmann has already
been active since 1982 in the company and has played a
major role in the business internationalization since 1993.
Armin Gauselmann, also a business studies graduate, became a member of the company board in 1997 and is responsible for the fields of human resource and real estate as
well as the Deutsche Automatenmuseum (DAM), a private
collection of historical coin-operated machines. Together
The Gauselmann

with his mother Karin Gauselmann, he is a member of the
board of trustees of the Gauselmann Foundation. Karsten
Gauselmann was responsible for the Gauselmann Group
vehicle fleet for many years. Today he is active as hotelier
yet continues to support the group of companies in his role
as member of the Supervisory Board.
The entrepreneurial family discusses fundamental
strategic decisions in the Family Council. This is made up of
Paul Gauselmann, his wife Karin and their sons.

SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT
Corporate commitment to the region
Social commitment in and around the region of Lübbecke,
where the group of companies is headquartered, is a matter true to heart for the entire Gauselmann family and for
Paul Gauselmann in particular.
Social &
health affairs
Culture
SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT
Environment
Local &
professional sport
The entrepreneurial family promotes in particular local
sport. Alongside the company sports association ‘BSG
Merkur Gauselmann e. V.’ with more than 1,000 members, the Gauselmann Group supports a large number of
local sports clubs and initiatives. Many sporting projects
have already been implemented, tournaments have taken
place and sports equipment has been bought thanks to
the financial support of the group of companies.
Paul Gauselmann
also supports the
tennis club TV
Espelkamp-Mittwald
in a sporting way. He
was German Champion in the Men's 65
age group in 2010.
SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT
The Gauselmann
Group supports
numerous sports
clubs – for example,
the handball top
division team
TUS N-Lübbecke.
Local professional sport also receives continual support.
Thus, the Gauselmann Group is the main sponsor of the
handball top division team TuS N-Lübbecke as well as the
men’s first team of TV Espelkamp that has been playing
in the second league for over ten years and the football
district league team FC Preußen Espelkamp. Furthermore,
the football club DSC Arminia Bielefeld and the annual
tennis competition Gerry Weber Open in Halle/Westphalia
are sponsored. In addition to this, individual professional
sportsmen and women as well as clubs outside of the region of Lübbecke have been taken into consideration. Thus,
‘the games makers’ support the two tennis professionals
Tommy Haas and Sabine Ellerbrock (wheelchair tennis),
the German Ice Hockey League and the football teams VfL
Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC.
The group of companies also supports projects
and initiatives with great commitment that serve health
prophylaxis and emergency care. The latest examples
here are the financial support in purchasing a sonography machine for the Lübbecke hospital as well as an
ultrasound unit at the Johannes Wesling Clinic Minden.
Furthermore, the modernisation of the Rahden hospital
13
and the extension of the Stroke Unit at the Minden Clinic
would not have been possible without the personal commitment of Paul Gauselmann. As long-standing chairman
and board member of the ‘“Schlaganfall” – Neurologische
Klinik Minden e. V. Förderverein’ (Charitable Trust for the
Minden Stroke – Neurological Clinic), stroke prophylaxis is
a matter dear to the heart of the entrepreneur. He initializes together with local partners the annual ‘SchlaganfallInfo-Tour’ (Stroke-Info-Tour) through the region of Lübbecke. This took place already for the 14th time in 2015.

Business activities and ecological commitment go sideby-side at the Gauselmann Group. The group of companies has made use of regenerative energy for many years.
Thus, a wind power turbine was installed in 1999 at the
development and production location in Lübbecke. The
photovoltaic system on the adp factory roof as well as
on 14 CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK rooves underlines
the pronounced environmental focus of the company.
Furthermore, environmental protection has long since

been a strong part of the operative daily routine within
the Gauselmann Group. Organisational and technical
processes within the company are continually optimised
to save resources and reduce emissions. The significance of this subject is reflected in the certification of
the development, production and sales departments at
the adp Gauselmann GmbH according to the internationally valid environmental management norm DIN EN ISO
14001:2004.
There are also many various examples for the cultural
commitment of the Gauselmann Group. The tower of the
Levern abbey church was renovated in 2012 with financial support from the company. The Gauselmann entrepreneurial family made a further important contribution to the preservation of the cultural heritage in the
region in restoring the more than 500 year-old Schloss

Benkhausen. The family purchased the cultural-historic
gem in 2010. The extensive renovation work was almost
entirely completed in autumn 2013. Schloss Benkhausen
serves mainly as the Gauselmann Group training centre,
yet also offers room for external events such as conferences, weddings and official events in the field of art
and culture.

The Deutsche Automatenmuseum –
Gauselmann Collection
Michael Gauselmann laid the foundation stone in 1985
for the Deutsche Automatenmuseum – Gauselmann
Collection that today consists of approximately 1,800
historic exhibits from all around the world by purchasing
coin-operated machines and researching their history.

Visitors can see the approximately 200 rarities in its
unique permanent exhibition and be enchanted by these
silent witnesses of the entire industry and economic field
that span over more than 100 years.
Foundations
Company founder Paul Gauselmann set up the Gauselmann Foundation on his 65th birthday. The earnings
from the capital that have now reached approximately
five million euros are put to use for cultural and social
projects in the whole Lübbecke region. A total of 86
institutions could be supported in 2014 with a total sum
of more than 150,000 euros.
In addition to this, the entrepreneurial family founded the ‘Stiftung Kinderfamilien-Hilfe’ (Children-Family
Support Foundation) in 2008. This foundation offers help
to children who are temporarily suffering from financial
difficulties.
The Gauselmann Foundation annually
supports a large
number of social and cultural
projects.

Made in Germany
The Gauselmann Group products are predominantly manufactured in Lübbecke – for both the national and global
markets. Production ensues according to the internationally
valid norm DIN EN ISO 9001:2008. In this way customers
benefit around the whole world from the utmost ‘made in
Germany’ quality.
The Gauselmann Group has a further production
location in Mechernich – the headquarters of the subsidiary GeWeTe Geldwechsel- und Sicherheitstechnik. Money
changing machines and pay stations for local authorities
are made there. As market leader in Germany, HESS
develops hardware and software solutions for banks, public
institutions, commercial enterprises and casinos.
21
To be optimally prepared for the future, the Gauselmann
Group has an additional production site in the Russian
city Welikij Nowgorod. The subsidiary Merkur Rus has
been manufacturing gaming machines since June 2005
here – naturally according to the internationally valid ISO
9001:2008 standards.
The many years of experience in development and manufacturing have placed the Gauselmann Group as a reliable
partner both nationally and internationally for AWP operating
companies and casino operators. The group of companies
convinces furthermore with its ability to quickly adapt to
legal and social working conditions, to individual customer
preferences as well as local market specialities and player
customs in the corresponding sales markets.

BUSINESS SEGMENTS
Spielothek Division
The Spielothek Division brings together the global activities of the group of companies in the field of arcades.
The Gauselmann Group is market leader in Germany
with more than 230 exemplarily managed entertainment
centres under the brand name CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK and offers its guests modern recreational fun
in a special way. There are four factors in particular that
explain why CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK is the most
successful and most popular arcade chain in Germany:
CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK
First-rate
atmosphere
Innovative
products with the
best games
Best service
Qualified
personnel
Quality is given top priority at CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK – that is reflected not only in the best possible
games range but also in the certification of the CASINO
MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK headquarters according to the
internationally valid quality management norm DIN EN
ISO 9001:2008 in January 2014. The certification has
also been extended to the entertainment centres by the
end of 2014.
2013: Service-Champion Bronze
2015: Top national employer
23
CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK was able to assert
itself as well in 2013 in Germany’s largest service ranking
from the daily newspaper ‘DIE WELT’ and was the only
company in the gaming machine industry to receive the
seal of ‘Service Champion Bronze’.
CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK was the only arcade
chain in the industry to be awarded ‘Top Employer’ in
2015 and so belongs to the 800 honoured companies in
Germany where the staff very much enjoy working.
In the international arcade segment the Gauselmann
Group operates under the brand name CASINO MERKUR
International. The global business activities have been
continually expanded upon since 1986. The Gauselmann
Group also offers a first-rate atmosphere, new and innovative products, optimal customer service and qualified
personnel beyond the German borders to be able to
provide ultra-modern entertainment for the international
players. Each offer is individually adapted to the needs of
the corresponding markets.
CASINO MERKUR International was internationally
active in Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Spain, Czech
Republic, Serbia, Great Britain, the Netherlands and
Slovakia in 2014, operating approximately 220 modern
entertainment centres under the laughing Merkur sun.
It is not only in
Germany where
the Gauselmann
Group offers
first-rate
entertainment.
Saved from dereliction: The restoration of the 500 yearold Schloss Benkhausen by the Gauselmann entrepreneurial family has given the town of Espelkamp one of
its landmarks back. An ultra-modern training centre has
been created after just three years of renovation time
25
with eleven conference rooms and beds for 50 people in
31 single or double rooms, offering space for seminars,
training courses and events of all kinds. Furthermore, the
Deutsche Automatenmuseum – Gauselmann Collection
has been housed in the buildings since October 2013.
BUSINESS SEGMENTS
New Media
The company division New Media covers the fields of
sports betting, online gaming and financial services.
Merkur Interactive, founded in 2006, is responsible for
the development of this segment.
The Gauselmann Group succeeded in entering the
international sports betting market with a controlling
interest in the Austrian company Cashpoint in 2005.
Cashpoint offers both stationary solutions such as betting
shops or points of sale operated via self-service terminals
as well as online offers – individually adapted to the country-specific laws of the corresponding target markets.
Alongside licensed internet platforms in Denmark, Austria,
Schleswig-Holstein in Germany and Malta, the company
currently operates more than 5,000 POS terminals in the
form of betting shops, kiosk systems and self-service terminals in Germany, Denmark, Austria, Belgium and Great
Britain. Cashpoint underlined its position as specialist for
sports betting yet again in 2013 with the development of
Axel Schulz and
Pierre Littbarski

Bet Book.

the new betting terminal called ‘Merkur Bet Book’, made by
Merkur.
The Gauselmann
Group is also active in the field
of new media.
The company has owned a valid sports betting and online
casino licence since the end of 2012 for Schleswig-Holstein
and is allowed since then to offer sports betting in Germany’s
most northerly state in betting shops, on betting terminals and
also on the internet. A modern online casino went live already
in autumn 2013 under www.merkur-spielcasino.de. The first
two own betting shops were opened in 2014 under the X-TiP
brand.
edict eGaming, that has belonged to the group of companies since 2008, is also active in the New Media segment
alongside Cashpoint. The Hamburg-based company is the
specialist for online gaming platforms as well as for the
development and the technical operation of online casino
solutions and system platforms for the gaming market. edict
eGaming markets its own products exclusively in the B2B
field.
PREVENTION
As manufacturer of amusement and gaming machines
and operator of exemplary arcades, the subject of
prevention has been an integral part of the company philosophy and company-internal guidelines for
the Gauselmann Group for many years. At the same
time the group of companies predominantly shaped
and enforced the subjects of responsible gaming and
prevention on the association level and ensured the
industry-wide implementation of important player protection measures – independent of the legal guidelines,
based on voluntary obligations.
The Gauselmann
Group is scientifically supported
by the responsible
gaming commission.
It is very complicated to measure just how many people
are really to be classified as pathological players. All
available studies prove that the amount of these players
remains constantly at a very low level in Germany. Scientists assume that only about 10 in 1,000 players are
apparent through their pathological playing behaviour.
Thus, Germany is placed towards the end of the scale
taking a European comparison into consideration.
29
Gaming remains a harmless leisure time activity for 99
percent of our guests. According to all studies, 0.18 to
0.56 percent of the entire adult population exhibit a
problematic gaming behaviour.
The most important lever of our prevention activities is
the multi-faceted and extensive information policy that
enables affected persons as well as their relations, staff
and in particular the general public to be able to openly
and freely discuss this subject, free of prejudices.
As market leader in Germany, we offer inter alia modern arcades, innovative amusement products with the best games
and first-class service – that naturally also takes the awareness for responsible consumer protection into consideration.
Intensive co-operation with experts from politics,
science as well as help and support agencies is necessary to
implement effective prevention measures. Continual training
and sensitizing staff alongside the information offer for
responsible gaming are factors of the successful prevention
work that revolves around the subject of gaming with low
stakes and prizes.
The Gauselmann group of companies thus places
emphasis on continual dialogue with a nationally and
internationally recognised team of experts that is actively
committed within the framework of the responsible gaming commission of the Gauselmann Group. The experts of
this commission are Prof. Jörg Häfeli Stäger (University of
Lucerne, Switzerland), Pieter Remmers (Director Assissa
Consultancy Europe, Netherlands) and Roman Neßhold
(Institute of Gambling & Dependency, Austria).
STAFF AND TRAINING
The decisive factor for the success of the Gauselmann
Group lies in its motivated and productive workforce. A total
of 8,462 people were working for the group of companies in
2014 – 5,793 alone in Germany. In addition to this, over 200
apprentices were active in 15 different vocations and dual
studies.
Training young people
is a true matter of heart
for the entrepreneurial
Gauselmann family.
Training is not only offered in the classical business and
commercial-technical jobs yet also in industry-specific
careers: The careers ‘coin-op specialist’ and ‘coin-op
service technician’ were officially recognised and approved as qualified positions that require training in 2008
after long efforts made by well-known interest groups,
institutions and companies – with the Gauselmann Group
leading the way. The good to very good results of the
graduates as well as numerous top distinctions at state
and national level reflect every year the training quality.
The high numbers of applications that the Gauselmann
Group receives each year speak for themselves: Approximately 2,300 young people applied to ‘the games makers’
in 2014. 87 of these were employed for the available
training positions.
31
Company sports association
‘BSG Merkur Gauselmann e. V.’
The company sports association ‘BSG Merkur Gauselmann e. V.’ has also received support from the entrepreneurial family for more than 15 years. The ‘BSG Merkur
Gauselmann e. V.’ is the largest company sports association in the Minden-Lübbecke region with over 1,000
members in 24 different sports and furthermore belongs
to the largest company sports associations in North
Rhine-Westphalia. The representatives of the individual
sports divisions have already shone in numerous competitions and tournaments. Thus, the BSG footballers secured
the championship title at the European Summer Company
Sports Games in Prague in 2013.
The ‘Merkur Kicker’
footballers have
proven themselves in
many competitions.
Merkur Senior Citizen Club
Paul Gauselmann and 26 former employees of the group
of companies founded the ‘Merkur-Senioren-Club’ (Merkur Senior Citizen Club) in March 1998 to maintain the
contact between former colleagues and the company. At
the beginning of 2015 the club counted more than 100
members.
