Suncom is a proud member of
the Danville and Greater
Susquehanna Valley United Way.
some it may seem like only yesterday. Suncom began with 27 Board Members and
a staff of 3. Simple beginnings, but with the help of grant funding, families and
community support the corporation was started. Their combination of hard work and
dedication is celebrated every day.
The need of yesterday is still the need of today – having services that help people with
disabilities reach their potential. Today Suncom provides a variety of services to more than
460 people with disabilities with a staff of 200. In our facility based programs,
prevocational and community habilitation, approximately 400 people receive service to
help them with prevocational training and daily living skills. In the prevocational program,
individuals have the opportunity to learn work skills and earn a paycheck by producing
work for local businesses. This production work
serves as a vital tool in teaching hands-on skills
that can lead to community employment. The
pride in earning a paycheck is immeasurable.
Many people can be successful in the
prevocational program working at their pace as
they master their skills.
In the Community Habilitation programs, people have great opportunities to participate
in our community through volunteering, outings, and leisure
activities. Individuals learn about the community and join in.
During time in the program, skills are taught to help with
socialization, independence and daily living. Friendships with peers
and support from
staff give people
a full and
meaningful day.
For Tomorrow,
people will still need services that help
them reach their potential. For
Tomorrow services may change how and
where they are offered due to new
regulations. Change does allow for
growth, creativity and new experiences.
Suncom faces these changes with board members, staff, families, community members and
funding to support any challenges. Suncom has much to celebrate a strong tradition of
yesterday, the strength of today and the creative opportunities of tomorrow.
Happy 50th and many more!
“ Change does not change tradition.
It strengthens it. Change is a challenge
and an opportunity, not a threat.”

Employment Grants
Shane Straub at Burger King
Suncom received two Micro-Grants from Northumberland County Behavioral
Health/Intellectual Developmental Services for Spreading the Spark: Employment 1st!
Suncom will begin an “Employment 1st Spark Library” of technology equipment for
program participants. The funding was utilized to assist Suncom in purchase of two iPads
which will be used by participants enrolled in Suncom’s prevocational program and who
work in the community. The Community Integrated Employment Services’ (CIES)
grant helped fund a recent promotional campaign in the newspaper highlighting the success
of individuals working in the community. CIES has assisted 50 people in becoming
successfull employees at local businesses.

Raise the Region
Suncom participated in the First Community Foundation & Blaise
Alexander’s 4th Annual Raise the Region to help fund the purchase
of iPads to be used by Suncom participants to help with skill building and
communication. Several staff and individuals got up early to promote the
event on WNEP’s Leckey Live segments with other local non-profits.

WNEP's Ryan Leckey and Suncom's Chris Branda
Over 120 people gathered on Saturday, November 14, 2015,
hoping to yell B I N G O. Friends and family, in memory of
Fred Hoffman III, showed their support by organizing a Home
Bingo game. All prizes were donated with love in his memory
to benefit Suncom. Suncom is truly
thankful for the generous donation in
Fred’s memory. Improvements to the
facility and the purchase of a van for
outings were made possible thanks to
everyone, especially Fred, Shelly,
Angie and Josh.
Dedication Donation
is a thoughtful way to recognize the achievement of a friend, child or loved one. A donation is made to Suncom to commemorate
someone’s birthday, anniversary or other occasion as a way to create a fitting memorial to the life of a family member or friend.
Special Thanks to families who have designated Suncom for contributions for their loved ones.
