Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates. Prehistoric users of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley. The span of approximate occupation has been dated from 300 B.C.E. to 1150 C.E. Their visits probably involved hunting, food gathering, and religious ceremonies, although scarcity of water would have limited the length of their stay. Fine examples of rock art left by these ancient peoples can be found at several sites within the park. Winters are mild with temperatures ranging from freezing to 75 degrees. Daily summer highs usually exceed 100 degrees F and may reach 120 degrees. Summer temperatures can vary widely from day to night. Average annual rainfall is four inches, coming in the form of light winter showers and summer thunderstorms. Spring and fall are the preferred seasons for visiting the Valley of Fire. PAID ADVERTISMENT As sworn officers of the Nye County Auxiliary, we work to enhance the effectiveness of the Sheriff’s Patrol and County Courts. For over twenty years, our role in Southern Nye County community services has been growing in scope. We now support traffic control for Accidents. Fire/Rescue and Special Events as requested. We are involved in citation writing for illegal Disabled Persons parking areas, and function as reporting witness to criminal activity and unsafe conditions. We serve, on call, at the request of the Nye County Sheriff, and any legal authority within that organization. Even though the Auxiliary Unit is a volunteer organization, there are specific standards of conduct and performance that remain continually a requirement. An application, interview, and background check are the first steps to membership. Training in various job-related subjects is available to each new member. Continuing education is also provided for such topics as First Responder Medical and Hazardous Material awareness. This training is for the mutual benefit of the member and the organization. Knowledge and working within the scope of training helps protect the individual. With the commitment of a minimum of fifteen hours of service each month, the member gives to the community a vital service using their life skills and experience. Applications are available through the Town Office and Sheriff’s Patrol. We are representative of all segments of the community, and dedicated to return to our neighbors and visitors a high level of service. There is currently a critical need for trained and qualified people to address the call for service. Through the Nye County Sheriff’s Auxiliary, you can make a meaningful difference. We have been recognized as Unpaid Professionals by those we serve. Join us in our efforts, you will be welcome. Advertise in our newsletter for more exposure!
