Projects galore at the Sibley County
fairgrounds in Arlington
By Dennis Van Moorlehem
Sibley County Fair Board Member
Well, I thought it was wet last spring, but
this year takes the cake. We have been
struggling to get our grounds in shape for
our 2013 fair. So much for the bad news.
We are, in fact, getting everything lined up
and the entertainment is locked in.
Along with this, we are finalizing plans
to lift and place footings and a new floor
in the octagon refreshment stand, then
lower it and repaint it this fall. Why the
fuss? This building is one of the oldest
buildings in Arlington. It started out as a
band shell in the park behind the Sibley
Medical Center. As near as we can figure,
the band shell was built on site in the late
1800s. Sometime in the early 1900s, it was
hoisted up and moved to its present location. Here it served as a refreshment stand
and judges’ stand for the old race track
area in back of the present grandstand. In
the 1940s, the new grandstand was built
facing away from the old race track, thus
the new track was born and the building
was relegated to a refreshment stand. We
hope to save this historic building for the
next 100+ years and show visitors inside
for the first time in many years by the 2014
fair.
My personal favorite project is also taking shape for the 2014 fair. Our new Heritage Center is in the process of getting bid
specs drawn up and financing lined up.
What is a Heritage Center? This building
will be 85 feet wide by 112 feet long with
a stage, dressing rooms and space for
around 40 commercial booths. It will be located east of the old school house adjacent to the carnival area. We intend to have
family-based entertainment, educational
programs, youth-based shows, and whatever other presentations we can line up.
This will be one of the largest projects we
have ever attempted and are up to having
it done by early summer 2014. We are lining up $200,000 of financing and are interested in any type of donations you may be
interested in giving.
A third project we have for 2013 is new
pens in our FFA building. We will have
Thursday at 6:00 PM the draft horse people will put on their Farmers Horse Hitch
Show. On Saturday the Sheriff’s Posse
puts on its Annual Horse Show. New this
year, on Sunday at 1 PM, we are proud to
present for the very first time a Ranch
Rodeo, these are amateur horsemen and
women showing their skills performing various ranch jobs done for hundreds of
years by real old fashioned cowboys. As
usual these shows are free. Come on out
set and watch, cheer the contestants, lean
back and enjoy a day at the 2013 Sibley
County Fair.
pens that match the pens we have in the
sheep and goats buildings.
These improvements are made possible
by $61,500 dollars from four grants we received this year. If we sound proud of our
plans, you are correct.
With all this building going on we have
also lined up some great grandstand entertainment. New this year after many years
we will present Professional AWF
Wrestling on Friday, August 2nd. On August 1st we will have the return of Night Of
Destruction. The name describes the
evening very accurately. Saturday, August
3rd, Arlington Raceway Auto Racing
makes its return by popular demand. On
Wednesday night, July 31st, we will have a
presentation of old time draft horse Farmers Horse Hitch demonstrations. These
guys will show you what your ancestors
went through to make a living in the past.
We have additional teams this year and the
guys are anxious to show you how well the
teams work.
In our horse arena east of the race track,
we will be presenting shows each day. On

Sibley County 4-H
at the Fair
By Angie Esselman
Sibley County Extension
2013 4-H Summer Intern
It is getting close to that time of year
again, county fair time! What comes to
mind when you think about the Sibley
County Fair? Some might say the rides, the
food, or the animals. But many will say 4H! Sibley County takes pride in
its 4-H program, and is
happy to showcase its 4Her’s hard work at the
county fair. 4-H projects exhibited at the county fair
range from several categories. Some of the most
popular non-livestock projects include: photography,
flower gardening, crafts and
fine arts, wood shop, clothing,
wildlife and biology, exploring
animals, and much more. All of these great
projects are displayed all fair long in the 4H building for the public to view. The projects with the highest rating from the judges
have the opportunity to be displayed and
judged at the state fair by the 4-Her who
put endless effort into them.
Not only do 4-Hers exhibit project
boards, but the favorite project among the
Sibley County 4-Hers are their livestock
projects. The livestock projects exhibited
require time, effort, and a lot of dedication
by the 4-Hers and their families. The livestock exhibited by 4-Her’s at the Sibley
County Fair include: dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats, horse, poultry, rabbits,
and llamas. A different livestock show occurs every day of the fair allowing spectators the opportunity of seeing something
new each day of the fair.
What are the great qualities 4H has to offer and why are so
many youth and volunteers
involved in it? 4-H is a
learn-by-doing program
that allows youth to find activities they love and allows
them to thrive in them. 4H also allows youth to develop great leadership,
problem solving, and communication skills as well as lifelong friendships.
If you or your family is interested in
joining 4-H or becoming a 4-H volunteer,
please contact the Sibley County Extension
Office at 507-237-4100 or check out our
website at www.extension.umn.edu/
county/sibley.
Come and visit your local 4-Hers and all
of their great projects at the Sibley County
Fair Wednesday, July 31 – Sunday, August
4. See you at the fair!
Page 9
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN 4-H?
4-H serves youth in grades kindergarten through one year past high
school from all backgrounds and interests. 4-H offers membership
without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender,
disability, or handicap. Those who are in kindergarten through
grade 3 may participate through Cloverbuds.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN 4-H?
Join a local 4-H club — 4-H clubs are groups of youth who meet
regularly to work on 4-H projects, perform community service,
develop leadership skills and learn to work together. Guided by one
or more adult volunteers, a club can be any size, from a small group
of neighborhood kids to a large group from a school or county.

Grants for buildings and renovations
By Dennis Van Moorlehem
Sibley County Fair Board Member
Each year people ask me if we made any
money at the Sibley County Fair. My answer is a standard we are happy to break
even. The next question is how you keep
the grounds up and maintenance of buildings. Here is the down and dirty answer to
that question.
As soon as the Fair ends we (the fair
board) start to make the next year’s
money. First, we clean all buildings and
send out letters to past storage customers
and new ones we have run across in the
past year. In October the board meets on
two to three weekends and park these
units ranging from lawn mowers to RVs.
campers, boats of all descriptions, as well
as ski-doos. When we close the doors at
the end, we have every building full to the
rafters. Ca’ching enough money to shingle
a building.
In November I start writing grants. First
on the list this year was a $7,400 County
Fair Arts Access and Cultural Heritage
Equal Share grant to repair the old judges
stand, the octagon refreshment stand. We
got lucky and received it. The work will
start after this year’s fair. Ca’ching another
building fixed
Next, I turned to the County Fair Arts
Access and Cultural Heritage Grant
Competitive grant. We again got the grant
for $50,000 to help build the estimated
$250,000 future Sibley County Heritage
center. This center will be the largest building on our grounds to be used to provide
educational, as well as entertaining, events
that have struggled for years to fit in on our
refreshment stand stage. We plan to add
many more types of stage presentations as
well as house a new and larger commercial
booth area around the outside of the new
building. I know you all loved the old #21
with its blazing heat and evening sound effects when races and other grandstand
events occurred. This Ca’ching is the first
step, but we will need everyones support
to complete it in time for the 2014 fair.
A glutton for punishment, I applied for
a Small Arts Project grant from the Prairie
Lakes Regional Arts Council. We received
$2,020 to finance the children’s day and
senior day entertainment. Ca’ching this
grant has helped us to put on some great
shows again this year.
Next, we applied for an AgStar Grant to
replace the old wooden pens in the Future
Farmers Children’s animal petting building.
This grant for $3,000 will replace all of the
old pens. Ca’ching a much needed upgrade to a ever popular event.
stand. This project will be completed later
this fall. Ca’ching a 100-year-old building
will look new again.
Lastly, we ask businesses and private citizens to donate to our fair as sponsors or
donate to individual projects. If this
sounds like a lot of work, it is. Most of this
work is done by 25 fair board members
who are paid absolutely nothing for the
honor of serving on the Sibley County
Agriculture Association the 501c3 tax exempt organization that runs and have ran
the fair for 144 years.
We proudly invite everyone to come to
our 144th annual fair. Not the largest but
one of the best. While there, ask any of us
for the tour of our grounds. Notice the
pride we show without even knowing it
when we talk about our fair yours and the
boards.
Thanks, see you at the fair!

Not “Kidding” Around
By Joy Cohrs
Sibley County Fair Board Member
The Fred and Ann Jutz family lives southwest of Gibbon in Severance Township.
The Jutz children
have
been involved
with
Sibley
County 4-H for
over 25 years.
Former 4Hers Stacy, 27,
and Josh, 25,
are both employed
at
nearby Bode
Dairy. While in
4-H, they were
members of
the Blazin’ West Stars club, which sister Johanna, a 2013 GFW graduate, belongs to.
Johanna plans to attend St. Benedict’s College in St. Joseph this fall.
Stacey is currently a county adult leader.
While in 4-H, she showed dairy goats,
poultry and pets. She also did photography and flower gardening.
The family had a dairy herd until they
lost their barn to fire. Josh showed dairy
along with goats, poultry and other projects like photography, creative arts and
wildlife/biology.
Johanna shows dairy goats and pets.
She also does clothing, fine arts, photography and flower gardening. She serves as
club reporter, county 4-H ambassador and
4-H federation reporter. This past year has
kept her busy fulfilling her duties as 201213 Gibbon Princess.
The siblings have participated in Share
the Fun and softball with their club. They
also do ditch cleanup and visit the local
nursing home,
Southview Living.
While
there, they play
bingo,
sing
Christmas carols and other
activities with
residents.
The Jutzes
have quite a
number
of
goats,

breeds. Johanna plans to bring 12 to show
in 4-H at the fair. They will also show many
others in open class and lease many to another 4-H family.
Fred and Ann are very involved with
their family and 4-H. Fred is a former 4-Her
and Ann has served as club leader.
The girls agreed that county and state
fair was their favorite part of 4-H while
Josh enjoyed playing softball with the
club.
The Jutzes use their goat milk for drinking and feeding the ‘kids’ (baby goats).
Some people make yogurt, cheese and
soap with it. The family has contributed
greatly to the rapid growth of the dairy
goat project.
