You have chosen the University of Liege to
complete a part of your studies or you are
about to do so. Congratulations, thank you
and welcome.
As you will soon find out, Liege definitely
deserves its reputation as a "land of
hospitality". A cosmopolitan town with a
rich history, Liege has succeeded in
combining its Latin and German ancestry.
The present guidebook should help you in
your first contacts with Belgium and the
Liège area. It includes practical information
which should provide answers to questions
about accommodation, transport and
administrative steps, and we hope will make
it easier for you to find your place among
Liège students.

Our university is keen on offering the best to
international students and suggests several
events that should help them integrate and
collect information. It was twice rewarded in

The University of Liège is mainly located in and around Liège:
in the city centre and on a wooded hill some 10 km south of
the city called Sart Tilman. This guide develops information
about the Liège campuses.
It includes two other campuses:

Cost of living
French, Dutch and German are Belgium's
three official languages. An invisible
linguistic border divides the country roughly
into two parts : the French speaking South
and the Dutch-speaking North. There is also a
German-speaking community along the
German border. Brussels is an important
bilingual entity (French-Dutch), with a
French-speaking majority. Apart from a few
exceptions, the other regions are monolingual.
To meet everyday living expenses a single
student should have at least 600 € per
month at his/her disposal. To this amount
he/she should add study-related costs
(books, etc.).
The climate
The climate may not be the reason why you
have chosen to study in Liège. Belgium is
known for its changing skies. The climate is
often unpredictable. The temperature may
vary widely from day to day. Winters are
usually mild, and summers usually quite
pleasant, if not hot.
Price of some standard commodities:
Loaf of cut bread: 1.90 €- 2 €
French fries (from stalls): 1.50 – 2 €
Glass of beer (in cafés): 1.80 €
One course meal in a restaurant
(single dish): from 9 €
Fast food meal or salads: 3 – 6.50 €

Region' (UGR), a cross-border project
involving 4 countries and 5 regions.
The University of Liège is a laureate of the
enlarged Erasmus university charter for
Lifelong Learning Programme for the years
2007–2013: as a result its mobile students
are part of a European dynamic in which
they can choose among internships and
study stays abroad.
It was awarded the ECTS label, which
sanctions the recognition of processes and of
the rights of students who chose to come to
Liège as part of a mobility agreement and
the DS label for the quality of information
provided on degrees awarded.

Since the end of the 1960s most faculties, that
had long been scattered all over the city, have
converged to a single site, which is also one of
the most extensive green area in Liège, less
than 30 minutes away from the city centre by
bus or bicycle (a few minutes by car), namely
the Sart Tilman Campus.

of art integrated
into the landscape.

You can reach the
Sart Tilman by bus
with lines 28, 48 and 58.
Most of the University buildings are located
on the Sart Tilman Campus, about 10 km
from the city centre. It covers some 1,820
acres, half of which are still woodland.
Some parts are devoted to leisure activities:
walking, cycling and riding, sports and
barbecues.
The scientific, didactic, hospital, sports and
tourist infrastructures are located in clearly
delimited zones – all in full harmony with
the beautiful natural surroundings.
Downtown University buildings
The downtown University buildings host the
Rector’s office and all administrative services,
including the General Direction for
Education and Training and services running
students affairs and the curriculum, as well
as the arts faculty (Philosophie et Lettres).
"HEC–Management School–University of
Liège" has two venues, one downtown
(rue Louvrex, 14) and the other one at Sart
Tilman (Boulevard du Rectorat, 7-Bât. B31).
The Faculty of Architecture offers courses
on two locations downtown: the Botanical
garden and Outremeuse.
Arlon
For over 30 years the Arlon campus has
been dedicated to university teaching and
research in the field of environment. It is
both friendly and modern, and offers all the
services and infrastructures needed to
accommodate students and their learning
activities: lodgings, cafeterias, libraries,
sport equipments. Arlon is a centre of trade,
industry and culture which students
appreciate.

Gembloux
Gembloux is a small and friendly city of
some 20,000 inhabitants. It hosts Gembloux
Agro-Bio Tech (the name of the Faculty of
agronomy in Gembloux) with research
projects that have been internationally
recognized for over 150 years. At the cutting
edge of research on sustainable development and eco-innovation, it is mainly
dedicated to agronomical sciences and
biological engineering. The Faculty’s
buildings as well as most students’ lodgings
are close to each other, which makes it
possible to do without cars or motorbikes.

4 Studying at the ULg
A balanced European university
curriculum
In Belgium the university curriculum is based on
the European model.
It consists of 5 years (6 for veterinary medicine,
7 for medicine) divided into 2 cycles:
3 years to complete a Bachelor’s degree
(180 credits), and (in most cases) 2 more
years for a Master’s degree (120 credits).
Thanks to a combination of options, study
paths and modules, the University of Liège
offers every student the academic
development that fits best his or her
personal project.
Master's programmes can be adapted to the
student's professional goals thanks to a
variety of options, modules, and the chosen
approach (30 credits out of 120).
Exchange students are not bound to the
study paths offered. However, it is strongly
advised not to choose too widely divergent
courses in the Learning Agreement.
The Master’s degrees include various
approaches:
• The in-depth approach includes thorough
learning in a particular field and the
acquisition of the necessary methodology
to do research.
• The didactic approach includes the
acquisition of pedagogical skills needed to
teach in secondary schools.
• The specialised approach trains students
for a profession related to their course of
studies. After their Master’s degree «120»
our students can do an additional
Master’s degree or a third cycle (Doctor’s
degree – 180 credits).
The PhD course leads to the academic title
of doctor. It may only be read after a course
of at least 300 credits (bachelor's degree +

master's) and consists mainly in preparing
and presenting a thesis. The PhD course
includes a PhD training of 60 credits
completed by a research training certificate.
This training is linked to the specific skills
of the research teams and grants graduates
with high scientific and professional
qualifications.

Examinations
Within the same academic year students
cannot take more than two examinations on
the same course. As a rule, the second
assessment occurs during the third set of
exams (August-September).
The Faculty may decide special examination
modalities for exchange students (Erasmus
programme, Erasmus Belgica, cooperation
agreements).
In this case the exchange student must get in
touch with the involved professors and the
departmental coordinator at the beginning of
term.
Examiners convey the results of their
assessments using a figure between 0 and
20, with 10 out of 20 being the pass
threshold for individual courses.

Exchange students have the results of the
examinations they took in Liège validated
by their home universities.
The "Communauté française de Belgique"
requirements to pass into the following
years are not applicable to them.
When you take an examination, remember
to tell your teacher or to write on your exam
paper that you are an exchange student;
mention the name of your ULg department
coordinator.
Marks received at ULg are transferred to the
student’s home university by the ULg
departmental coordinator and related to
ECTS marks according to the following grid.

1 The ECTS system
The European Credits Transfer System is
based on the total amount of work a student
has to produce; it does not only take class
hours into account.
The figure for each course (from 1 to 60)
corresponds to the relative amount of work
required from students for this particular
course, including tutorials, labs, workshops,
field work, internships, and personal
research (whether at home or in libraries) as
well as class attendance. Time spent in
preparing for and taking exams or tests is
also included. One credit is supposed to
correspond to about 30 hours of learning.
Work produced during one year amounts to
60 credits (so that as a rule one semester
amounts to 30 credits). The use of this
system makes transfers from
foreign institutions easier.
Students obtain credits after a successful
assessment of their knowledge and
expertise.

2 The ECTS and DS labels
The European Commission awards two
highly coveted labels in the field of teaching
and training.
The DS Label is awarded for the quality of
information on degrees and their
supplements.
In 2009 the University of Liege was awarded
the ECTS Label. Only 28 European
universities can currently claim this award.
In 2010 ULg was awarded the 2nd European
label, the DS Label. With this second award
the University of Liege became the only
Belgian university with these two European
awards, and entered the circle of
17 European universities that can claim
them both.
The Diploma Supplement is an exhaustive
and standardized document that is
appended to all higher education degrees. It
provides detailed information on the
students’ university curriculum, the study
programme, the skills acquired. It makes the
diploma more readable and more easily
comparable abroad. It ensures a great
transparancy, wheter for other university
institutions or for future employers.
Through the ECTS Label the European
Commission acknowledges the quality of the
ULg's support to mobile students –
especially in the field of information and
services. As it conforms to ECTS-related
procedures, the ULg makes sure that results
are both accessible and easy to transfer, and
thus that the academic value of students'
stays abroad is recognized.

3 Formalities
ERASMUS MUNDUS: SEE YOUR VADE-MECUM
Trainees or doctoral students
(stays from 1 to 12 months)
If you wish to come to the ULg for an
intership or a research programme
without taking any courses, here are
the steps you should go through
before leaving:
1. Send a detailed application (with
your CV, the dates when you wish to
come, the specialised field in which
you work) to a Professor in our
University who is a specialist in your
discipline.
2. If your application is accepted, get
in touch with Anne-Laure Villeminot

3. Provide evidence of your
registration as a student in your
home university.
4. Your intership or research
convention must be signed by your
University, the Professor at ULg with
whom you will be working, and
yourself.
5. Get in touch with Anne-Laure

registration form.
6. Register online.
7. You will then receive a letter of
acceptation.
Preparing your departure
1 Discuss the courses you intend to take at
the ULg with your coordinator in your home
university.
2 Get in touch with your ULg coordinator
to check whether you can actually take
those courses.
3 Send the online application form to our
Erasmus Office before 15 May and your
printed Application Form duly signed and
stamped by your coordinator before 31 May.
Students applying for the second term have
to send the online Application Form before
1 November and the printed and signed
Application Form before 15 November.
Be careful: it will not be possible to
complete the online Application Form after
the deadlines. After completing the online
procedure, you must print the form, sign it
and send it to our Office.
Important: We cannot accept your
application without your coordinator's
signature and stamp.

to be handed in on arrival if you come for
the first term or to be sent along with the
application form if you come for the second

Contacting your ECTS departmental
coordinator
The academic coordinator will validate
your learning agreement and explain how the
courses are organised and what methods
of evaluation are used.You will be informed
about how to contact her or him in a letter sent
along with the official letter of acceptance.
Changes in the study contract must
immediately be notified to the departmental
coordinator.
A copy of the modified study contract will
have to be signed by the coordinator and sent
on to the Erasmus Office.
No change to the study agreement will be
accepted unless it is signed by the appointed
coordinator.
Administrative formalities
EU students can move from one EU country
to another with a national ID or passport;
no visa is required. Before travelling to
countries outside the EU, enquire with
consular offices or diplomatic missions
whether a passport and visa are required.
Students from outside the EU who stay in
Belgium and wish to travel around should
have a passport and an A card supplied at
the town hall.
To travel outside the Schengen area, ask the
diplomatic mission of the country you wish

Welcome Days
In order to provide you with complete
information the International and Erasmus
Office, Service for the Promotion and
Information on the Studies
with the participation of ESN-ULg
(Erasmus Student Network) organise
welcome days for exchange students. They
should contribute to a quicker and smoother
integration.
For the 1st term they will occur on on
Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 September
2011, for the 2nd term the welcoming day will
take place on Friday 3 February 2012.
On the agenda: introducing ULg, local
gastronomy, visit of the Sart Tilman domain,
exploring the city… A detailed programme
will be sent individually.

Before getting back home, you should

French to attend classes and take exams.

In Gembloux
A French course for non-native speakers is
organized in Namur. It consists of about 40
hours per term and is equivalent to

Individual health insurance is compulsory in
Belgium. Therefore all students have to
subscribe to the health insurance fund of
their choice.

• If you are from an EEA country (EU +
Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) you
are insured through your own national
health service. Before leaving your home
country, you should ask for the Health
insurance european card. This form covers
you in case of illness abroad, and is valid
for a maximum of one year.
If you need to see a doctor in Belgium,
youwill have to subscribe to a health
insurance fund with your Health insurance
european card. You will then be refunded for
many of the medical costs you incur in
Belgium.
Moreover, in order not to be confronted
with difficult situations, we highly
recommend that you take out a mobility
insurance policy such as "Tous risques".

The staff in this unit is committed to

It organizes trainings about first aid

Red Cross. It is in charge of following
students who practise a sport or an artistic
activity at a professional level as well as
temporarily or permanently handicaped
students or students who meet with
psychological difficulties or a debilitating
disease.
Finally it can listen to students that feel bad
for whatever reason (personal difficulties,
strained relations with other students or
with professors…) and send them on to

family planning centre concerned primarily
with counselling young people. Students can
find competent doctors, lawyers and

2 Students' tutoring
The first days in a new environment are
always difficult. You have to find your
bearings, meet new fellow students, locate
rooms and all sorts of necessary
information, not to mention lodgings...
This necessary adaptation process takes
time and energy.
Liège students may at first seem
rather standoffish, but if you turn to them
and ask for help or advice, they often turn
out to be friendly and generous.
In order to facilitate contacts between
exchange students and local students, the
ULg set up a tutoring system in which local
students offer their help and support to
newcomers – show them the city, the
university, and contribute to their smooth
integration into the local life.
The International and Erasmus Office can
provide the names and addresses of local
students involved in this scheme, but will
not interfere in your meetings.

Initiating an email address
The University suggests that you initiate an
email address on the pattern

It will of course be free. We are aware that
you may already have another (or several
other) free addresses.
So, is this really useful? It is!
A lot of messages (some professionally
useful from tutors or the administration,
some just friendly about things to do, price
discounts at concerts and the like) will be
sent or forwarded to you by the University,
and the only address we know is your
university email.
ULg email boxes are beyond any
comparison with other free providers. They
have a storage capacity of 500 Mb and are
protected by a double anti-virus software
and two anti-spam filters. You can even
have your mail automatically forwarded on
to another address.

4 Opening a bank account
If you choose to open a bank account in
Belgium you had better do so at once. Banks
will require the following documents:

Bus
The name of the local bus company is TEC
(Transports En Commun). It offers an
extended and modern network.
A ticket and information office is located on
place Saint-Lambert
You can buy
• ticket 1.60 €
• 8 journey card for 6.80 €
• a season's ticket (you need a photo) for
28 €/a month, 220 €/a year. Students under
25 can benefit from a 50% cut if they hand
in a certificate when they register. For
students over 25, seasons’ tickets cost
50 €/a month and 295 €/a year.

Bus lines 48 and 58 take you from
downtown to Sart Tilman and around the
various buildings on the campus. They both
leave from the Opera house. Their different
routes are marked on the maps. Note that
only line 48 stops at the main station.
The busline 28 takes you from Fléron, and
pass around Bouny, Chaudfontaine, Romsée,
Ninane, Beaufays, and Tilff to Sart Timan
(various buldings and University hospital).

Through its five comprehensive libraries the
library network at the University of Liege,
that has pioneered support to Open Access,
supplies students, scholars and scientists
with remarkably rich and diversified digital
and printed resources.
The printed documents includes thousands
of scientific journals and several million

exceptional ancient collectibles including
6,500 manuscripts, 500 incunabula (among

Students' associations
The objectives of the "Fédération des
étudiants" (Fédé) are to represent and
inform students, and to defend their
interests, to offer services (such as students'
jobs), and to provide support in the
students' academic life. It supports various
cultural initiatives (photo lab, 48 FM radio,
a newsletter called Le P'tit Torê – or "small
bull" in Walloon), socially involved projects
(the Benin project, an Amnesty
International cell, an Oxfam group…) and
entertainment activities such as Unifestival.
Along the same lines the Fédé also supports
students' associations that apply about
interesting initiatives they have developed.
It publishes a guidebook-cum-diary with all
sorts of useful information that you will
receive during the welcome days.

Since 2006 the "Fédé" has also been a

ESN-ULg is an international network of

"48 FM" (a name inspired by the bus line to
Sart Tilman) has promoted a student radio
in the heart of the city.
The students' radio has its own frequency on
105,0 FM. Webradio broadcasts on the
Internet www.48fm.com every day from
8 a.m. to 1.05 a.m. 48 FM offers a lot of
music with some cultural or didactic
features, but without any advertisements.
The radio station is located on the 3rd floor
of Maison de la Fédé, Place du 20-Août and
is open to all (with an obvious priority to
students). It is currently and recurrently
looking for motivated collaborators, so if
you'd like to try your hand at playing
compère or DJ, or radio technician, or
webmaster for a rich and varied website, do

The city of Liège
Liège is located in the French-speaking part
of the country, of which it is the most
significant city.
Liège is a child of the river Meuse: the river
has given the city its shape and moulded the
character of its citizens. Take your time to
discover this multi-faced city and its many
neighbourhoods, which are like so many
small villages. On Sunday mornings go and
stroll through the "Batte", the longest
market in Europe, along the river.
Liège and its area rely on water and fire: the
fascinating alliance of opposites. The
history of Liège and its province is closely
linked to that of coal. From this burning
stone comes one of the city’s nicknames:
"La Cité Ardente". This means that though
the sun doesn’t always shine on Liège, you
will still find it in the heart of its citizens.
The first image that Liège and its province
give to tourists is one of a welcoming,
animated region.
30 km from the Netherlands, 45 km from
Germany, 2.15 h. from Paris and 3.15 h.
from London, the metropolis stands at the
heart of Europe, at the crossroads of Latin
and Germanic cultures.
Liège is obviously a student town. Its
nightlife is busy and lively. Evenings in the
downtown streets called "le Carré" are
unique. This part of the city has a double
life: luxury shopping by day, and by night
busy students cafés and discos where you
can eat, drink and dance till dawn.
If you like the arts you will find much of
interest: the ORW (Royal Opera of
Wallonia), the Philharmonic Orchestra,
about a dozen theatres, some pop-rock,
electronic music and jazz festivals,
international contemporary dance and
theatre gatherings, poetry festivals, etc.
Many cinemas offer a wide range of films,
from the more experimental to blockbusters.
Should you want to escape from the city,
just take a bus for about 10 kilometres.
Liège is surrounded with green, wooded
areas. The Sart Tilman woods, which belong
to the University, are undoubtedly the most
easily accessible and most rewarding in
their layout.
Liège also stands on the threshold of the
Ardennes. Don’t hesitate to go a bit further
to discover this country of sudden deep and
twisting valleys where you can walk or
cycle, visit castles and abbeys, breathe pure
air and enjoy cheerful hospitality.

By car
An intricate network of roads makes travelling
to Liège and to Sart Tilman very easy.
By train
Liège is also accessible by train from the
Guillemins Railway Station
(tel. +32 2 528 28 28), from where a regular
bus service takes you to the town centre
(lines 1, 4, 30, 27, 48, all going left to "rue
des Guillemins") and to the Sart Tilman
campus (lines 48 and 58).

By plane
The national airport Brussels Airport
(Zaventem) is located near Brussels. It is
possible to travel directly by rail from
Brussels to Liège (two trains per hour). The
trip takes about an hour.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport is another
international airport, with busses, coaches
and trains leaving from Charleroi (the
station is 7 km from the airport and there is
a shuttle).

Liège Airport, also called Liège-Bierset, is

Private accommodation
First of all you should know that in Liège
this type of accommodation is called a
"kot". There are about 7,000 "kot" and
studios in Liège.
What is a "kot" ?
It’s an individual room, generally furnished
and rented by the landlord. Usually there are
several kots in the same building. Students
share facilities such as toilets, bathroom and
kitchen. A room can also belong to the
landlord's house, and the student will then
share some facilities.
They can also choose fully independent
lodgings (studios or small flats). The price for
a furnished kot is around 275 €/month,
additional costs not included. There are two
types of prices: those that include the cost of
electricity, heating and gas and water, and
those that don’t. The landlord can also
demand a monthly provision for expenses
with final settlement based on meters at the
end of the student’s stay. Make sure that you
take this into account when comparing prices.
To have more choice and take time to
compare lodgings, we advise you to arrive in
Liège at least one or two weeks before the
beginning of classes. It is better to wait till
you are here to make a choice and to pay
nothing before you have seen the place. You

lodgings is agreeable (transport, shops, etc.).
Be very cautious and read carefully the
renting contract your prospective landlord
will have you sign, particularly regarding
duration. A lawyer from "Centre Jeune" can
provide free help and advice.
The University lodging office can provide
you with a temporary accommodation (for
1 or 2 weeks) while you look for your
permanent lodging (depending on what is
available). You can ask for this temporary
lodging via the form for "Erasmus lodging" .
If you are to stay the whole year in Liège,
you must look for a "kot". A private

selfservice system with hot meals, cold
dishes, salads and desserts from 11.45 to
13.45. Prices range from 4 to 7 €, including a
drink.

The six 'counter' cafeterias are open from
Monday to Friday, with limited opening
times during examination periods and

In February or March of each year, the
University Theater organizes the worldrenowned International Festival of
University Theater (RITU), which attracts
theater companies and observers from
numerous countries abroad. Exchange
students avail themselves of free tickets at
the International Relations Department.
The Opéra Royal de Wallonie, in
collaboration with the bus company, offers a
free shuttle service to its temporary location
on days with performances.
'Nickelodéon' is a university cineclub. It is
run mainly by students from the cinema
department at the University of Liege. It
aims at showing rare or forgotten films from
the history of cinema. Every Thursday night.

2 In Gembloux
The city of Gembloux
Practical tips
Gembloux is located in the province of
Namur, about 80 kilometres west of Liège.
The town developed around a medieval
Benedictine abbey before it acquired an
international reputation in agronomy as
early as the 19th century (reaseach and
teaching as well as socio economic
developments). The Gembloux Faculty is
located at the heart of the 'agrobiopole' that
brings together institutions involved in
teaching, research and technology transfer
in agronomy and biological engineering.
The town of Gembloux has over 20,000
inhabitants and is a major communication
hub. It is at the crossroads of the 'Nationale
4' (Brussels-Namur) and the 'Nationale 29'
(Charleroi-Tirlemont). Two motorways
(E411, Brussels-Namur-Luxembourg, and
E42, Mons-Liège) are only a few kilometers
away. It lies on the railway line from
Brussels to Namur and Luxembourg.

If you come by train, including Eurostar, you
arrive in Brussels-South. From there take an
IC train to Gembloux (direction Namur or

walk from the station. On leaving the
station go straight ahead Avenue de la
Station and follow the raiway lines to
Avenue de la Faculté d'Agronomie. The
entrance is on your right a few hundred
yards further.
By plane
From Brussels-National, take a shuttle train to
Brussels-North, then an IC train to Gembloux
(direction Namur or Arlon or Luxembourg).
From Charleroi Brussels South take the shuttle
bus to the Charleroi-South station – line A,
then an IC train to Namur or Ottignies. From
Namur, take an IC train towards Brussels (first
stop Gembloux). From Ottignies, take a train

About 500 rooms or flats are available in
Gembloux and neighbouring villages. The
average rate for monthly rent of a room with
local inhabitants is 235 euros.
University accommodation
Students can also find lodgings in various
residences that belong to Gembloux Agro-Bio
Tech. They are close to the centre, and apart
from flats or flatlets, most consists of individual
rooms. Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech can book
rooms for students if they file in a request by
the end of June for the first term and by the
end of November for the second term.
