the essence
The year 2013 has been filled with challenges and new beginnings. Convocation
season does that to us. It is an ending to some but a beginning to many. At
UTP, celebrating its 13th convocation ceremony augments achievements and
a sense of fulfillment of obligation and responsibility. This year, for the first time,
the alumni plays an integral role by also contributing in recognising exceptional
talents for the nation and industry with its Alumni Award for Best Research
(Doctor of Philosophy and Master’s Category). Another significant milestone
achieved in this quarter is the establishment of Solar Field Testing Facility at UTP
Centre of Innovative Nanostructures and Nanodevices (COINN) where the official
launching took place during the weekend of the convocation ceremony.
As in the past quarters, the University celebrates creativity and innovations.
In this quarter, the University scored high at British Invention Show (BIS) and
International Trade Fair, Ideas, Inventions and New Products Exhibition (iENA)
2013. Our award winners continued to inspire other faculty members with
their amazing wins. Apart from the academic faculty winning at national and
international competitions, the students also emulated the success by emerging
as the overall champion at the International Student Sports Carnival and bagging
important awards at World Dance Festival in Korea. Being competitive has born
fruits for the University. As Mitt Romney said, “A competitive primary does not
divide us, it prepares us and we will win!”.
Where we excel at hard sciences, we strive to exercise our empathy and
humane bones by bringing meaningful changes to those who are less fortunate.
The University community joined force with the alumni members to bring relief
to flood victims in Kuantan. The University’s annual staple “Menggapai Impian”
continued this year with 60 more children receiving school supplies for the
new term. To date this programme has benefited more than 464 children from
17 orphanages. Taking charity to a bigger scale, this year Yayasan Universiti
Teknologi PETRONAS raised RM500,000 through YUTP Charity Golf 2013.
Proceeds would be channeled for education through scholarships as well as for
research and development initiatives.
Finally, the editorial wishes all readers a productive year ahead.

Alumni Award for Best Research at
UTP’s 13th Convocation Ceremony
YBhg Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, Pro Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi
PETRONAS (UTP) and Chairman of PETRONAS presented Alumni
Award for Best Research to Muhammad Farooq from Chemical
Engineering Programme for Doctor of Philosophy category and
to Jawad Humayun from Electrical and Electronic Engineering for
Master’s category, at UTP’s 13th Convocation on 27 October 2013.
Alumni contributed the awards in support and recognition for creativity
and innovation amongst the scholars. At the same ceremony, YBhg
Tan Sri Sidek also conferred doctoral, masters and bachelors degrees
to 1147 students.
Out of the 1147 students, 157 are postgraduate students from
Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Process
Integration, Asset Management & Maintenance, Electronic Systems
Engineering, Petroleum Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering.
The remaining 990 students were undergraduates from various
programmes namely Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
Information and Communication Technology, Business Information
Systems, Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Geoscience.
Speaking at the occasion, YBhg Tan Sri Sidek reminded the graduates
that convocation is not the end of their relationship with UTP, but
the beginning of a new one. YBhg Tan Sri Sidek also mentioned that
every graduate owes the alma-mater for what they are today. Thus,
graduates should preserve their bond with the university and give
back to their alma mater by actively contributing towards making the
University a better place to seek knowledge.
YBhg Tan Sri Sidek further added that as graduates, they will always
be associated with UTP. Hence, it is their responsibility to ensure their
actions at the workplace safeguard and further enhance the reputation
of the UTP brand.
On another note, YBhg Tan Sri Sidek stated that as one of the
institutions of higher education focused on engineering and technology,
UTP needs to continually monitor the challenges ahead and reassess
its role in order to remain competitive and relevant in the fast evolving
4
national education sector. Efforts to upgrade the research activities
must be implemented so that UTP can continue its meaningful
research contribution to the national economic development and
attract the best talent and institutions for collaboration.
This year’s Chancellor Awards were presented to Lee Hsiu Eik
(Civil Engineering Programme) for Gold, Siti Noor Ashikin Mustaffa
(Petroleum Geoscience Programme) for Silver and Yong Jenn
(Chemical Engineering Programme) for Bronze. Other award recipients
included Nguyen Thi Hoai Vy from Chemical Engineering Programme
for Best International Undergraduate Student Award.
In conjunction with the convocation ceremony, various events were
organised.
Academic & Research Exhibition (ACADREX) is an event that
features UTP’s academic exhibition and innovation forum. One of
the main highlights of ACADREX 2013 was competitions that were
held from 25 – 26 October 2013. The competitions were divided
into 3 categories namely Primary School, Secondary School and
Family. These competitions had attracted participants from various
schools and surrounding community in Perak. They were organised
with the objectives of inculcating a culture of innovation amongst
young Malaysians in line with UTP’s vision of becoming a Leader in
Technology Education & Centre for Creativity & Innovation.
Saturday, 26 October 2013 also saw the launching of Solar
Field Testing Facility at UTP Centre of Innovative Nanostructures
& Nanodevices (COINN). This facility would allow for real-time
performance measurement of Solar PV in real solar conditions to
be conducted. The establishment of this facility is timely as the
researchers are now moving towards developing building-integrated
PV (BIPV) in the form of power generating windows in the initiative
towards up-scaling the prototype to near ready for commercialisation.
UTP and its Students Representative Council also organised its annual
event, the ConvoFair at its campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar from 25
October to 27 October 2013, featuring various activities that included
paintball, kayak and performances by local popular artistes such as
Hyper Act and Forteen.
Collaboration
Promoting Sustainable
Forest Management
with FRIM
UTP signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Forest
Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) to collaborate in promoting
sustainable forest management (SFM) and optimal use of forest
resources through the application of knowledge and technology,
generated through scientific research and development activities.
The signing ceremony was formalised between UTP Vice Chancellor,
Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj. Hashim and FRIM Director General, Dato’
Dr Abd Latif Mohmod. Also present as witnesses were UTP Chief
Financial Officer, En. Hasbullah Hj Ihsan and FRIM Senior Research
Officer, Forest Biodiversity Division, Dr Lillian Chua.
The signing of this MOU was another important milestone for UTP’s
journey towards becoming a recognised higher learning institution.
The significant alliance with FRIM augured well towards the holistic
development of both parties and further helped UTP to remain relevant
to the industry and nation at large.
Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim said that, “Within UTP’s 1,000-acre campus
area, there exists four endangered tree species namely Vatica flavida
(resak padi), Shorea hemsleyana (cengal pasir daun besar), Shorea
macrantha (kepong hantu) and Aquilaria malaccensis (karas). These
four species have been touted as our nation’s heritage and FRIM
has been supporting us by coming in once a month to check on
these trees and at the same time, conserving them. Through this
collaboration, the university provides FRIM access to our forest areas
to conduct research activities and the findings will be shared with UTP
community in the future.”
Abdul Rahim also expressed hope that this initiative will help to
enhance the UTP campus community’s appreciation of the importance
of conserving threatened species and its habitats, and the benefits of
rehabilitating degraded sites.
Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod said this collaboration is in line with
FRIM’s mission to develop appropriate knowledge and technology for
conservation, management, development and use of forest resources;
and its pursuit of excellence in scientific R&D and technology transfer
in the forestry sector.
“Close to a century of R&D in forestry and forest products has allowed
FRIM to play a role in the protection and conservation of Malaysia’s
natural resources. This has considerably enhanced our capacity
to undertake sustainable management of our forest resources and
address national and global concerns with regards to biodiversity loss
and degradation of natural environments,” he said.
Abd Latif said plant conservation research in UTP began in 2007 when
FRIM initiated the search for the Critically Endangered dipterocarp
species, Dipterocarpus semivestitus (keruing padi) and this had led
to the discovery of the three other endangered species Vatica flavida
(resak padi), Shorea hemsleyana (cengal pasir daun besar), Shorea
macrantha (kepong hantu) in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sri
Iskandar campus and UTP campus in Tronoh.
“Continuing our efforts in saving rare and threatened tree species
is the discovery of 44 mature trees of Aquilaria malaccensis (karas)
between 2011 and 2013. Wild stocks of karas trees are heavily sought
after for its pricey agarwood or gaharu. Untouched populations are
hard to find, and it is gratifying to note that UTP has healthy and
undamaged trees in significant numbers. The secured campus ground
has ensured the safety of all tree populations,” he said.
Apart from the conservation of natural resources, he said FRIM’s
vast experience in rehabilitation of degraded areas is another area of
possible collaboration with UTP.

also an avid sportsman and is a
qualified FIVB international coach
for volleyball. His other sports
passion is rugby.
6
Tuan Haji Mohd Noor Rosli Baharom is UTP’s Deputy Vice Chancellor
(Student Affairs & Alumni). This exclusive interview explores his thoughts and
perspectives in engaging with the university’s alumni and the importance
of connecting in mind, spirit and soul to ensure sustainable relations.
He believes that alumni perpetuate the university’s legacy of excellence.
Universities have traditionally reached out to their alumni in various ways. Some with huge and
sustainable success but most soldiered on with lackluster results. But over the years the demands
and expectations on and from alumni changed. It has become a challenge to convert graduates into
active alumni. Tuan Haji Mohd Noor Rosli said that “...at UTP we explore all forms of communication
to connect with our alumni including facebook which now has 3,535 members. The question is how
much do new “likes” and “follows” translate in engaging them to visit the campus, follow our news and
share their views and ideas with us?” LinkedIn is another powerful tool that has connected many alumni
members currently, 2,485 Alumni are on LinkedIn.
While not over-ruling the power of virtual tools, he said thus far, the far more traditional face-to-face
interaction has yielded the desired impacts. The annual homecoming held usually in conjunction with
the university’s convocation ceremony, seminars, workshops and charity events hosted by the local and
international chapters have drawn more and more alumni to “return” and give back to their alma mater.
He shared that to date the University has in its database 9,896 names from the total number of 10,600
who graduated since the first convocation in 2001. Of that number, 6,800 has registered with UTP
Alumni Association worldwide. And the number keeps growing every day.
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established with the intention of producing a pipeline of
professional talent for the oil and gas industry for PETRONAS and other related national and international
corporations. After more than 15 years since its inception, the University has been successful in
meeting the demands of the industry. 60% of the graduates entered oil, gas and petroleum industry
with renowned brands like SHELL, Exxon-Mobil, Halliburton, Schlumberger, Technip and Baker Hughes
(to name a few) apart from PETRONAS. Others joined related engineering and technology giants like
HUAWEI, LG, Motorola, Proton, INTEL and others. Malaysia’s automotive industry players like Proton
for example preferred graduates trained at UTP. Many UTP alumni have also carved illustrious careers
in financial sectors, consultancy firms, insurance and specialist service providers. Some Alumni are also
successful entrepreneurs managing their lucrative businesses.
Feature Story
Many of our graduates have steadily climbed the corporate ladder, worldwide. One of our
illustrious and successful alumnus is Paul Adong Bet Dang, who is now the managing director
of Nile Petroleum Corporation (NilePet) in the Republic of South Sudan. He is not only respected
for his technical competency but most importantly his leadership. And on that, Tuan Haji Mohd
Noor Rosli remarked is already a recognition on the University’s ability to produce leaders for
the industry and nation, a vision aspired by the University. There are many successful alumnus
who have made great impact in various organisations locally and internationally. They have now
reached strategic decision making levels and also able to influence direction of industry and
national development. Tuan Haji Mohamed Noor Rosli strongly believes UTP Alumni is now in a
position to be the shakers and movers of industry and national building.
With alumni members peppering the globe, the sky is the limit for the University to collaborate with
the alumni to undertake initiatives and projects that would bring good to the world. Already there
have been CSR and community programmes organised in South Sudan, Cambodia, Vietnam
and Thailand especially focussing on education and in triggering interests for children to take up
science and technology interest in their studies.
The University understands that our graduates have different priorities as soon as they joined the
workforce. They are more focused on finding the right career fit, building a family and starting to
strengthen their economy. And so, throughout the years, UTP Alumni has only requested for the
members’ time, knowledge, experience and network.
But now with the inculcation of philanthropy culture through social engagement with alumni, the
stage is now set to tap the economic power of Alumni in providing financial assistance to the alma
mater. Recently there have been moves to encourage salary deductions but only amongst alumni
who are attached with PETRONAS and its subsidiaries as a start.
Tuan Haji Mohd Noor Rosli also said that he is proud that in the recent convocation ceremony,
UTP Alumni Association has come forward to join the University in recognising talents and efforts
in research by contributing the Alumni Award for Best Research both in the Doctor of Philosophy
and Masters categories.
Tuan Haji Mohd Noor Rosli believes that there are many more opportunities to explore in bringing
the alumni closer to home – its alma mater. Like any parent, the University does not expect any
return from its alumni. To keep them closer to the University’s heart namely, by engaging them
in the university’s activities, respecting their ideas, thoughts and input, and recognising their
contributions – the University hopes that together with the alumni – both can bring meaningful
impact in nation building and the world. The potential of this synergy is limitless.
TIPS ON ALUMNI MANAGEMENT
1. Build loyalty and sense of belonging from day one. UTP Alumni recruits associate members
amongst first year undergraduate students so that the relationship between students
and alumni can be developed and nurtured. All UTP students will become UTP Alumni
associate members and their status will be automatically transferred to full membership
upon graduation. As an associate member, UTP students are eligible to participate in
activities organised by the alumni for them.Ultimately, an associate member will be able to
enjoy great affiliation with successful alumni members in various industries worldwide.
2. At the onset of the relationship, do not burden the alumni members with financial
contribution because they are just starting their career and thus have different priorities and
commitment. Instead, ask for the alumni’s time, knowledge, expertise and opportunities to
bring meaningful change to the society and community.
3. Make it easy for alumni members to connect. If it is geographically challenging to gather
all, then have chapters or branches in the respective locations so that alumni can connect
in spirit and in soul.
4. Each alumnus carries the university’s DNA. The members are part of the legacy and they
can help shape the direction of the future. Engage them to help define the university’s
progress and strides.
5. Like any other parents, never demand their “return” but instead nurture them so that they
understand the meaning of obligations and gratitude and cajole them to play an active part
in guiding their next generations.

UTP organised the Regional
Conference on Student
Activism (RECONSA 2013)
UTP organised the Regional Conference on Student Activism
(RECONSA 2013) on 16-17 November 2013.
Themed, Embracing Volunteerism, this conference was held with the
objectives of:
• Enriching and creating a conscious society that practices
volunteerism in a right and comprehensive manner.
• Reinforcing the concept of well-rounded students who excel in
academics while actively participating in voluntary activities and
contributing to society
• Providing a platform for students to think critically and creatively
in presenting their ideas and interacting with others from different
backgrounds.
The two keynote speakers, Hasanain Juaini, a known figure in
volunteerism field and Edmond Yap, the Founder of EduNation and
eight presenters were able to provide interesting insights to all the 200
students from various universities who attended this 2-day conference.
Young Programmers Camp 2013 (YPC13) Codes the Future
On 21 and 22 September 2013, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)
organised the Young Programmers Camp 2013: Coding The Future
(YPC2013) for students to further explore the world of technology in a
more interactive, fun and upbeat way.
YPC13 is the university’s community-outreach project concentrating
on secondary school students in UTP’s surrounding vicinity. For this
project, the students were selected from SMK Ahmad Boestamam,
Sitiawan and SMK Seri Iskandar, Bota. The two-day camp was
organised by Syntech Organisation, UTP’s students IT club, and
supported by Faculty of Science and Information Technology (FSIT)
UTP.
The objectives of this programme are to stimulate students’ creativity
and innovation in IT as well as to promote UTP academic programmes
to secondary students, namely Information & Communication
Technology and Business Information Systems. The students
were taught internet programming, commonly known as website
development.
Although many languages are used to generate a functional website,
the students were only exposed to the core languages, which are
the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheet
(CSS), to make it easier for them to understand how a website is
built. The module is based on an online learning platform, a website
dedicated to teach people, especially beginners how to code.
Other activities were also carried out during the camp. In addition
to addressing and enhancing the students’ creative-thinking and
problem-solving aptitudes, these activities were designed to exercise
14
and train the students’ soft skills such as leadership, team-work,
communication, listening skills.
All the activities were coordinated by UTP students with the assistance
from 20 Information Technology (IT) students from Kolej Universiti
Sultan Azlan Shah (KUISAS), Kuala Kangsar. At the end of the event,
a competition on web development was conducted to test students’
understanding and encourage them to be competent students.

Eduspec Junior
Robothon National
Finals
UTP hosted the Eduspec Junior Robothon National Finals on 17
November 2013. The theme of the 8th season robotics game was
“Better City Better Life”. 600 students from 40 different schools from
all over Malaysia participated in this event.
This competition is one of the largest and fastest growing educational
and competitive robotics programmes in Malaysia. Participants
performed with outstanding efforts as they competed aggressively
against opposing teams. Each team was given the same amount
of time to complete a certain task. The demands for students to
collaborate as they challenged against other schools and tested their
critical thinking skills were essential for this competition.
“We realise the importance of IT literacy for 21st Century Learners,
because IT literacy facilitates learning. Thus, it is important to introduce
a programme that has industrial relevance, a well-planned syllabus
with a good blend of content, pedagogical and technical knowledge.”
Said Lim En Hong, group CEO of Eduspec Holdings Bhd.
It is a common objective to develop different methodologies to attract
and maintain student interest during class while keeping in mind the
intellectual dimension of the experience. The learning-by-making
model appears as an acceptable method of reaching this objective.
It is a smart and amazing learning methodology. Robotic learning has
shown effective results as it has drawn many students interest and
kept them engaged in effective learning. This competition served as
a great platform for students to exchange their skills and display their
sportsmanship.
Eduspec Junior Robothon is a technological and educational
competition event. It provides an applied Information Technology &
Science platform for the children, to inspire creativity and encourage
team spirit as they strive for success and honour.
