Friday, February 4th, 2011 | 7-10 p.m.
Minnesota History Center
St. Paul, Minnesota
Welcome to the 10th annual Winterfest!
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
This festival is the highlight of the beer year for myself and many Minnesota beer drinkers. Winterfest features the unique, the rare
and the best specialty beers Minnesota breweries have to offer. Since the weather has turned cold we bring out some of our bigger
beers that can stand up to the frosty weather. The Minnesota Craft Brewer's Guild is excited to have five new Minnesota breweries
pouring at the event tonight. I believe it will be the inaugural pouring of beers from Big Wood and Harriet Brewing. It is a truly a
great time to be brewing beer and drinking beer in Minnesota. The explosion of new breweries in the past few years demonstrates
Minnesotan’s demand for great local beer. Enjoy all the special beers that are being showcased tonight. As always, be mindful of the
strength of these beers.
Thanks to all the individuals and companies that make this event happen: volunteers, the Minnesota Craft Brewer's Guild festival
committee, sponsors, participating breweries and attendees. Enjoy the food, music, beer and camaraderie tonight. And don’t forget to
vote for the coveted Snowshoe award, the crowd favorite beer of the night.

Twin Cities Hot Club
The Twin Cities Hot Club (TCHC) represents
Minnesota in the burgeoning revival
of gypsy jazz originally popularized by
Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and
the Hot Club of France. They recreate not
only the famous la pompe (the pump) that
distinguishes this romantic brand of acoustic
jazz, but also gypsy bossanova, musette,
bolero and swing. TCHC perform this timeless
deep-rooted music that is physical, and
speaks directly to the heart.

Beer Styles & Sensory Analysis
Michael Agnew will be onsite at Winterfest doing presentations on beer
styles and sensory analysis. Learn how to taste beer and what to look for to
get the most out of your Minnesota beer experience.
□□ Session 1 – 7:30
Don’t be Afraid of the Dark or “Dark” is not a Flavor – Many people say they
don’t like dark beer, but the range of tastes in even the blackest of beers
makes such a statement absurd. Sample a selection of dusky drams that
might make you see the light.
□□ Session 2 – 8:20
The Bold and the Bitter – Minnesotans love hops. There is more to hoppy
beer than Pale Ale. From peppy pilsners to Imperial IPA we’ll sample a
range of lupulin-drenched delights.
□□ Session 3 – 9:00
Wood, Smoke, and Fire – Barrel-aged beers, smoked beers, and yes, even
chili beers are a growing trend in the craft beer world. Minnesota brewers
are doing their part with offerings that range from the traditional to the
radical.

August Schell Brewing Co.
New Ulm, MN | www.schellsbrewery.com | Brewmaster: Jeremy Kral
FLOOR 2 | TABLE 8
Established 1860. The August Schell Brewing Company remains the second oldest family-owned and managed brewery in the United States. All of the
stockholders and board members are direct descendents of August Schell (or spouses of them). Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, the
brewery and its grounds are open to the public and visited by thousands each year.
There’s an old saying “Never trust a brewery under 140 years old." Okay, it’s our old saying, but it’s true, nonetheless. Schell's is the second oldest familyowned brewery in the country. While breweries and beer trends have come and gone, we’ve been right here, tirelessly brewing fine lagers and ales for
the people who appreciate them. Visit our brewery grounds and you’ll see deer, roaming peacocks, gnomes, not to mention barrel after barrel of the
finest beers imaginable. That’s just who we are, as it has been for over a century.
□□ Schell Bock OG 16 Plato, IBU 26 IBU, 29 SRM
□□ Schell Pilsner - 12.7 Plato, 30 IBU 3.1 SRM
□□ Hopfenmalz 13.0 Plato, 44 IBU ,10 SRM
□□ Stag #3- Rauchbier OG 15 Plato IBU 30 SRM 22
Schell Bock is modeled after traditional bocks of Germany, where it required by law the
original gravity be at least 16 degrees Plato. A harmonious blend of 10 different types
of malt and noble hops, Schell Bock is fermented slowly using an authentic German
yeast strain. Following fermentation, an extended lagering ensures a smooth finish.
Dark amber color with a robust malt character.
Hopfenmalz is an amalgam of our favorite beer styles: the elegant drinkability of a
Pilsner, the bready maltiness of a Vienna Lager, and the hopping of a Pale Ale. The malt
backbone was created using a large amount of Vienna coupled with judicious amounts
of Caramunich and Caravienne. In the kettle, we aggressively hop it with Cascade from
the Pacific Northwest and Tettnang that we purchase direct from a farmer in Germany.
Just to ensure we use enough hops, we dry hop it also. Hopfenmalz was fermented with
one of our house lager yeasts at a higher temperature to add some flavor complexities.
Originally brewed in 1984 (yes, you read that right-we've been making this beer for
27 years) , Schell's Pils is a shining example of the true European Pilsner style beer.
Brewed with 100 percent barley malt, where the Sterling Hop flavor is showcased. Its
full hop characteristic and delicate aroma were developed in Pilsen, Bohemia around
1840.
Stag Series #3 is August Schell’s interpretation of a traditional Franconian Rauchbier
(smoke beer). Rauchbiers date back to the early 1500s, when green malt was dried
over open fires. The grain picks up the smoky flavor from the fire, and this is carried
over to the beer. Stag Series #3 uses a blend of malts smoked over beechwood and
cherrywood to create a twist on the traditional style. The remainder of the malt bill
includes Dark Munich Malt, Caramunich, and a touch of black malt for color. It is
hopped with Tettnang and Sterling. Served uncarbonated, unfiltered via a Bavarian
Stich-Fass

Barley John’s Brew Pub
FLOOR 2 | TABLE 6
New Brighton, MN | www.barleyjohns.com | Brewmaster: John Moore | Head Brewer: Colin Mullen

beer and food with flavor, creativity and integrity. We offer nightly dinner specials , a rotating seasonal beer
selection, and a seasonal patio to compliment our traditional and not so traditional pub offerings. Stop in and

□□ Stockyard IPA
Elevated hop and alcohol levels present a wonderfully complex British-style IPA. A
more subtle presentation of hops is balanced with a toasty malt sweetness.
□□ Wild Brunette
Our signature ale! Brewed with MN grown Wild Rice and hopped with Willamette hops,
this brown ale has ties to the American-style brown, but the vanilla nuttiness of the
Wild Rice make it unique to us.
□□ Old 8 Porter
Rich, dark and roasty - our ideal version of a Porter. Roasted malts balance the body
with subtle smoky overtones.
□□ Belgian Dubbel
Brewed using an assortment of Belgian malts, candi sugar and fermented with a
Belgian yeast strain for a classic dubbel flavor. The dubbel (double) is a darker Belgian
style when compared to a tripel. Added dried cherries to the whirlpool to bring out a
dried fruit character.
7
□□ Winter Ale
Our annual Winter Warmer features caramel and munich malts for a robust malt
backbone to balance the elevated alcohol. Hopped with English Fuggle hops and
fermented with our house yeast. Orangish color with a warming finish.
□□ Dark Knight
Our latest incarnation of our potent Double Fermented Porter. Aged in Heaven
Hill Bourbon barrels for 8 months. Smooth rich chocolate and smoky overtones
pay tribute to our Old 8 Porter, higher alcohol content plays in hand with the huge
Bourbon notes for a fiery finish.
□□ Black Walnut Vanilla Brunette
This cask of Wild Brunette has be aged and infused with a handmade Black Walnut
extract and Vanilla Beans. The Black Walnut and Vanilla Bean accentuate the natural
nuttiness of our Wild Brunette.

FLOOR 2 | TABLE 10
Vadnais Heights, MN | www.bigwoodbrewery.com | Brewer: Matt Lindstrom
Big Wood Brewery is a small Brewery born from the decline in the economy, in the building industry
specifically. Our day job is distributing hardwood flooring, we started brewing beer just to satisfy the tastes
of the hardwood flooring craftsman, now the focus has shifted to exceeding the expectations of beer drinkers
with the taste for craft beers. Being new and small gives us the opportunity to have a lot of fun being a little
different. Cheers.
□□ Forest Ale
□□ Morning Wood
Classic nut brown, dark amber in color, with a hint of caramel, a nutty flavor, with a
strong smooth finish.
Orange in color, malty profile, bitter.
This American Ale is copper in color with a straight from the forest pine aroma, hints of
citrus and a friendly tart bite to it.
□□ Big Nut Brown Ale
The coffee aroma brings you back to the first cup of the day hence the name “Morning Wood”. This is a dry Stout, dark in color, light bodied, with a creamy roasted
character.

Brau Brothers Brewing Co.
FLOOR 2 | TABLE 11
Lucan, MN | www.braubrothersbrewing.com | Brewmaster: Dustin Brau | Brewer: Daniel Stavig
Brau Brothers Brewing Co is situated on the outskirts of tiny Lucan, Minnesota. Located in southwest
Minnesota, this family-owned and operated brewery has been brewing since 2000. Just outside the
brewery’s front door lies the three acre hop yard, which boasts eleven different hop varieties. This estate
brewery is also home to its very own three acre barley patch. Two row barley is malted right at the brewery
for special edition and local tap offerings. Brau Bros Beer is distributed throughout the upper Midwest.
□□ MooJoos Oatmeal Milk Stout
MooJoos is a stout built on complexity and texture. Layers of toasted and roasted malt
contribute notes of coffee, milk chocolate, cedar, and rich toffee. Generous additions
of oats, both flaked and toasted, give an oily texture to the beer which smooths over
the ale’s moderate carbonation. A traditional British yeast ferments fast and furious,
leaving us with traces of fruit, reminiscent of a fine cabernet sauvignon.
□□ Double Dry-hopped Sheephead
Firkin. Brau Bros’ Sheephead Ale, pulled from the fermenter after dry-hopping is
complete, then aged on a second dose of hops for aroma. A blend of Goldings and
Cascade is used to finish this beer.
□□ Rubus Black Blackberry Imperial Porter
Rubus Black is a modern take on a fantastic traditional style. This porter is big and
malty sweet. Loads of Chocolate Malt form the backbone of the beer, with just enough
blackberry to contribute a complex fruit nuance. In keeping with the style, British malt,
hops, and yeast are all utilized to keep the beer honest. At almost 9% ABV, Rubus Black
deserves to be sipped and enjoyed.

At Harriet Brewing we emphasize intention as the primary component in recipe development. It's what
makes good beer special. We take pride in using our knowledge of traditional beer styles, our open
minds, and eclectic pallets to brew both unique and traditional beer styles. Our goal with every recipe is
authenticity… to develop a particular character that allows the beer to stand out and be remembered. It's
authenticity that we crave as beer drinkers; so, it's authenticity that we strive for as brewers. We study beer,
determine what we want, then manifest it! For most of us here, it's not just in brewing; it's a way of life. So,
fellow beer lover, we ask that you drink with intention!

plays live where they kick out mellow CO2 vibes. Can you dig it?

Burbot Brown ale is available only in growlers from the LLBC tap room.
□□ Driven Snow Porter 6.5% ALC/VOL
Purely… delicious. As alluring as freshly-fallen powder and as smooth as hard-pack,
the velvety mouth feel and deep flavor are derived from 2-row Pale, Black Patent,
Dextrin, Chocolate and dark Crystal Malts, Roasted Barley and Molasses. Fuggle hops
act as the snow hook that anchors this big dog (60 IBUs), a bottle-conditioned brew
that could very well leave a musher believing it fell straight from Heaven.
□□ 47° North IPA 7% ALC/VOL
Find your way to a one-of-a-kind craft beer cache by setting your GPS to these
coordinates: N 47°06.168’ W 94°36.788’. There you will discover an India Pale Ale
unlike most others… Brewed with 2-row Pale and Crystal Malts, English Fuggle hops
benchmark the conspicuous bitterness (93 IBUs) and lend an earthy quality to the
refreshing brew. You’re not even close until you’re 47° North.
□□ 3 Sheets Imperial IPA 10.5% ALC/VOL
Ahoy there, matey! Let down the sails and relax, adrift upon the intense flavors that
buoy this craft. The India Pale Ale within this vessel is made of 2-row Pale, medium
Crystal and Dextrin Malts, in addition to Flaked Wheat. Awash in malt, Fuggle hops
form the deep and heavy keel with which the brew is counterbalanced (100 IBUs).
Maintain control of your sheets and please sail responsibly. “Aye, aye, Sir!”

Summit Brewing Company was founded by Mark Stutrud in 1986 with one goal: To bring back the remarkable craft beers once brewed throughout the Upper Midwest. Summit beer quickly grew into a local favorite,
placing Summit Brewing Company well ahead of a trend of craft brewing that would eventually sweep the
nation. To keep up with demand, the brewery had to grow. In 1993 alone, Summit Brewing Company tripled
in size. Mark and his dedicated staff were working diligently to quench the thirst of an ever-widening fan
base, leading them in 1998 to build the first new brewery Minnesota had seen in over 75 years.

Surly Brewing Co.
FLOOR 2 | TABLE 4
Brooklyn Center, MN | www.surlybrewing.com | Brewmaster: Todd Haug
Brewers: Callaway Ryan, Jerrod Johnson, Spencer Anderson
Surly Brewing Company sold their first beer in February of 2006. The idea for Surly originated a couple
years before that. Homebrewer Omar Ansari came up with the idea of opening a brewery after seeing a
3 BBL homebrew set-up in a magazine. Soon there afterword, Omar met Todd Haug at the Craft Brewers
Conference in San Diego. Todd Haug was the head brewer at the Minneapolis Rock Bottom. They began
talking about what type of beers the Twin Cities needed and what they would want their brewery to be
about. The concept was not about extreme beers. The concept was simple, brew the best beer we could, brew
styles that aren’t available here, focus on beer festivals and cask beer. We don’t filter out the flavor, we use
lots of the best ingredients we can find, and we brew beers that we want to drink. And more thing Todd and
Omar spoke of when putting this brewery together, have a little fun.
