Chairman’s
message
H
ingol in many ways is a benchmark of Cadet College Ormara,
reflecting the intellectual process of students and the hard
work of faculty for grooming and transforming the youth
into dynamic leaders of tomorrow. “Bravo Zulu” in naval terminology
and “Well done” in plain language to all those associated with achiving
academic excellence in this premier institute. The quality of articles
contributed by cadets reflects how far this institute has come in such
few years. I would like to record my deepest appreciation to the college
administration, management and faculty for cultivating the essence of
creative writing allowing for broader horizons of thoughts amongst the
young minds of this unique secluded area.
Besides its commitment of safeguarding the sea frontiers of the
motherland, PN has always remained proactive in welfare oriented
projects. From providing hospitals and medical facilities in Sindh and Balochistan to provisioning of quality education
through a network of schools and colleges stretching along the coastal belt of Makran, PN has dedicated itself for
the service of its countrymen.
In pursuit of “Aghaz-e-Haqooq-e-Balochistan” program, Cadet College Ormara was established. The institue is
mandated to channelize the potential of Baloch students and to educate them by providing high quality education
which is being synonymous to the elite colleges of the country. There is no denying the fact that Baloch people are
very hardworking, loyal and committed to the motherland and possess exceptional qualities of heart and mind. There
inclusion into the mainstream will at dividends to the progress of this nation.
Cadet College Ormara is hence serving a great national cause of uniting the people and allowing for the full potential
of these young minds to be flourished and recognised.
I can foresee the college converting into a centre of educational excellence on national level, the credit goes to the
parents for reposing confidence in CCO and trusting them to shape the future of their sons.
I wish Cadet College Ormara the best of luck in its professional and literary pursuit and appreciate the efforts of

message
B
eing the Principal of Cadet College Ormara is a great honour and it is a privilege to put my pen to paper again
for this magazine. Throughout 2015, we remained focused to attain academic excellence and I am satisfied
with the overall performance, hard work and dedication of my cadets and faculty. Alhamdulillah, our cadets
of grade 9 appeared for the first time in Federal Board Examination and achieved an impressive result, which further
strengthens our resolve to achieve higher standards.
To take the competitive spirit one step further, our cadets participated in various competitions countrywide which was
greatly appreciated. I can proudly acknowledge that this is just the beginning of many achievements to come in future.
Besides academics, personality development of cadets is an area we focus on. I am pleased that in a short span of 3
years, the students have developed themselves into self motivated and well groomed youth.
I am thankful to the faculty for their hard work and dedication. We have set a strong foundation to march ahead and I
am sure that through collaborative efforts, we can achieve even more. I would strongly encourage my cadets to dream
big, work hard and at the same time stay humble and disciplined.
My cadets are my strength and everyday, they motivate me to work hardar and turn CCO into one of the finest
institutions of our country.
I would also like to congratulate the editorial board and cadets in bringing out the second edition of ‘Hingol’.
May Allah grant us with success in our future endeavors, Ameen.

THE EDITOR’S NOTE
T
his issue celebrates the second anniversary of Hingol. Our first issue received
many outstanding reviews and comments from every quarter of the country. So the
expectations for our second edition were high.
In this issue, we have given a taste to the reader about the campus life of CCO. The kind of
work and activities that the students of the college were engaged in throughout the year
has been stated through words and depicted through pictures in this journal. I hope that the
articles which has been selected in the present issue are more diverse in nature and more in
detail than the previous issue of Hingol.
Many thanks to our Principal, Vice Principal and all members of Editorial Board for their
cooperation and support for bringing out this magazine.

IN A
GLANCE
Education not only shapes an individual’s life but plays a
pivotal role in the development of a nation. Keeping this in
view, Pakistan Navy has taken up various socio-economic
projects in coastal areas of Balochistan, with the sole aim of
empowering youth with education and to bring them at par
with the rest of Pakistan. One such step in this direction is
the establishment of Cadet College Ormara (CCO).

hroughout 2015, college remained steadfast in its quest to provide excellent academic opportunities to the
students in a highly supportive college environment. In this year, many academic landmarks were achieved.
Numerous changes have been brought in curriculum and policies to improve quality of education and wellbeing
of young students. In pursuance of our vision and mission, the college remained focused primarily in following three

We are pleased to present students’ achievements and college progress that we
have made so far in each domain in the ensuing paragraphs.
Intellectual Development
The intellectual arena of the cadets is defined by their Academic Progress
and Intelligent Responses. It determines the credibility of the institution
and translates the concept of ‘excellence in education' into reality. Therefore,
this domain has been given top preference throughout the year and following
innovative steps were taken to improve the intellectual development of our
cadets.

scholarships. Here, I am pleased
to share that in academic session
2014-15, the college appeared in
FBISE SSC-I exams for the very
first time and the results were quite
overwhelming.
Physical Growth
‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’
is an old saying but the truth
and veracity of this maxim are
universal. We believe that active
participation of students in sports
is very important factor towards
development of their character.
Besides scheduling regular inter and
intra collegiate sports competitions;
karate, gymnastic and sailing have
also been included in their sports
curriculum.
Social Intelligence
It is to help individuals to explore
and polish their hidden potentials
through channelizing internal
capabilities while eradicating inborn
shyness. Realizing the importance
of this domain, we develop the
wholesome personality of cadets.
Communication skill is one of the
important components of this
domain, we ensure our cadets’
participation in various Inter and
Intra collegiate Communication Skill

Program (ICPDP)
We firmly believe that only a person with a strong character can
become successful in life. Therefore, we have made Character
Building Program a mandatory part of cadets’ training. This
program effectively focuses on the development of cadets’
personality traits by giving focused attention in following aspects:

To educate, focus and practice six pillars of character i.e.
trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, care and
good citizenship.
To develop and enhance communication skills, teamwork,
self-confidence and self-esteem.
To develop a sense of patriotic commitment to contribute
towards national development.
To educate cadets about core ethical values.

News Round-Up
2015-16
1- Cadets visited Sri Lanka to participate in Herman Laos
competition in October 2015.
2- For the very first time, the college participated in
11th DAWN media Spelling Bee competition held from
28 Oct to 3 Nov 15 and won the regional round from
amongst 100 institutions from Sindh and qualified for the
finals. (Cadet Danish, Cadet Asher, Cadet Abu Huraira,
Cadet Waleed, Cadet Aimal Khan participated in the
compitition.)
3- Balochistan Govt. awarded merit scholarship to 51
students from various schools of Gwadar Distt. 32
students were from CCO thus getting the maximum
share.
4- Guest speakers from International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN) were invited to highlight
the importance of marine ecosystem.
5- Bahria Institute of Teachers Training (BITT)
conducted workshop for professional grooming of
teachers in Aug 15.
6- Guest speaker from Lasbella University was invited to
deliver a lecture on “Personality Traits of Quaid-e-Azam
Muhammad Ali Jinnah.”
7- Cadets participated in “All Pakistan Elite Institution
Talent Contest” held at Cadet College Larkana from 9th10th Nov 16.
8- Participation of cadets in “All Pakistan Speech
Contest” held at Cadet College Petaro on 28th Oct 15.

9- A workshop on personality development of cadets was
organized on 21st Nov 15 for faculty members through
Educational Resource Development Centre (ERDC).
10- Cadets participated in the “All Pakistan Bilingual
Declamation Contest” at PAF Academy Risalpur on 26th
Nov 15.
11- Cadets were invited by Pakistan Naval Academy on the
occasion of 104th midshipman passing out parade.
12- The college celebrated “International Coffee Day” on 1st
Dec 15.
13- Sailing Camp was arranged for cadets during winter
vacation at Aquatic Club Karachi from 23rd Dec 15 to 3rd
Jan 16.
14- All Pakistan Print and electronic media team visited the
college and appreciated the initiative of Pakistan Navy in
establishing Cadet College for baloch youth.
15- Cultural Night was organized by cadets on 9th Feb16 to
promote culture and traditions of all provinces of Pakistan.
16- Annual Prize Distribution Day was held on 10th Feb 16.
17- Cadets visited “Aiwan-e-Sadar” on 12th Feb 16 on
invitation of President of the Pakistan.
18- Cadet Saad Hassan, Cadet Mustafa, Cadet Rizwan
and Cadet Hashim participated in Governer DICE Youth
festival event on 24th march 16 and secured 1st position by
presenting science project focusing solutions to community
problems.

BUILDING
PROJECT PROGRESS

S
ince 2013, Cadet College Ormara is being
constructed by Pakistan Navy in close
vicinity of Jinnah Naval Base, Ormara. As
an interim setup college is running within the
premises of Jinnah Naval Base (JNB).
The project was initiated in 2012 through
groundbreaking ceremony by the then Prime
Minister Mr. Yousaf Raza Gillani. Later, the
then Chief Minister Balochistan, Dr. Abdul
Malik Baloch, and Ex-Chief of the Naval
Staff Admiral Mohammad Asif Sandila NI(M)
jointly unveiled the plaque at foundation laying
ceremony of Academic Block and Cadets’
Hostel on 3rd Sep 14.
The Project is spread over an area of 458 acres of
land. It is based on modern and contemporary
architectural design to meet the present and
future educational requirements. Key features
of the project include academic building,
6 hostels, mess and cafeteria, faculty and
staff accommodation, modern labs, library,
auditorium, various sports facilities i.e. shooting
range, horse riding club and sailing club,
athletic stadium etc. The construction work of
boundary wall, main gate, water reservoirs and
water sewerage system has been completed.
To make the atmosphere environment friendly
and healthy, landscaping of the project is in
progress. A variety of drought-resistant trees
i.e. Date palm, Washington palm, Acacia and
Conocarpus etc are being planted.
Presently, the construction of academic block
and cadets’ hostel is in progress. Both buildings
will be completed by end of 2016 whereas the
complete project of the college is likely to be
completed by 2019-20.

THE BEST GIFT OF BALOCHISTAN
The weather of Balochistan is favourable for the growth of dates.

If you’re looking for fiber, potassium, or copper,
look no further than date.
I
am inhabitant of a region which is very close to the
gulf. Due to its location, it is able to possess date
trees. Dates of Balochistan are famous like the dates
of other regions of the world. Some of which include
Egypt, Syria and Persia etc.
The history of dates in Balochistan is not so well
known. Some of the local people say that these dates
were brought into the region by the Arabs. Some other
say that history of Balochistan is very old, so is the
history of dates. They say that Baloch are primarily
migrants. When they migrated from foreign regions
like Syria, Iran and Arab, they brought dates with them.
As the weather of Balochistan was favourable for the
growth of dates, it started growing here and with the
passage of time, it spread to many parts of the province.
Date is a sweet fruit stored throughout the year and is
able to be used for next years.
Pollination period of dates in Balochistan starts
normally at the end of February till the first week of
March. It is usually done manually. Male tree of dates
is called Gonsh in local language while the female tree
is named as Daloko. Pollination period of dates is called
‘Aamien’ in Baloch language.

Dates pass through many stages before maturity. The
first stage is called “Paponk” which means “the bud”.
Second stage is called “Pongas” which means the half
ripened date. And finally “Nah” which means the fully
ripened date. The good thing about date is that we can
eat it at any stage except first stage. Juice obtained from
fully ripened date is called Sherrag.
Some of the well-known regions famous for dates in
Balochistan are Turbat (Kech), Punjgoor, Awaran and
Jau.
Some of the types found in Balochistan region are Pesh
Nah (early dates), Shakari (the sugared), Misri (the
Egyptian), Sabzu (the greenish), Begum Jangi (the lady
fighter), Corosh (the small), Muzatee (the brownish) and
Haleni (the ender).
If you’re looking for fiber, potassium, or copper,
look no further than date. While date is rich in many
vital nutrients, it offers many health benefits. Allah's
Messenger (SAW) says:
“A family which has dates will not be hungry.”
[Sahih Muslim: Book 23, Number 5078].
So, as long as dates are being cultivated in Balochistan,
people here should not worry about hunger•

few days earlier, I happened
to watch an animated
movie “Frozen” with my
younger sister. “Frozen” earned
much popularity not only among
teenagers but also among people of
mature age due to its unique concept
and smooth animation work. What
I actually want to share is, at the
end of the movie, I saw a name that
was quite different from the other
names. That name was Mir Zafar
Ali. It was a pleasant surprise for me
to see a Pakistani name among the
animators’ crew of “Frozen.” I was
really moved by seeing his name.
While looking at the success story
of Mir Zafar Ali, I saw countless
Pakistanis who are, despite the odds,
limited resources and poor support,
are paving their ways towards
success with their hard work,
passion and determination. They
are working either as individuals
or in teams that are bringing a
positive image of Pakistan across
the globe. I can list a number of
Pakistani based scientists, animators,
biologists, economists, socialists who
are working in various parts of the
world and have been quietly making
the country proud of them.
For instance, Mir Zafar Ali, as I have
written above, is a Pakistani movie
visual effects specialist and an artist.
He graduated from FAST Pakistan.
He is the first Pakistani who won
three Academy Awards for Best
Visual Effects. He has worked on the
visual effects of many Hollywood
movies which include Spider-Man 3,
The Day After Tomorrow, X-Men,
Stealth, Monster House, The Golden
Compass, The Incredible Hulk, The
Mummy and Aliens in the Attic.
If you have seen sea water waves
in the movie “Life of Pie”, you will
be compelled to praise the Special
Effects as creating water waves is a
specialty of this young boy. Novaira
Masood, Laraib Atta and there are
many other prominent visual effect
artists who are proving themselves
in their field.
Despite the fact that there being
no platform for proper start
ups, young promising Pakistani
entrepreneurs are accomplishing
great things, specifically in IT
sector. Faizan Buzdar, the top IT
expert, is one of those Pakistanis
who has made a deep impact in
IT field The CEO and Co-founder
of CONVO, is the Pakistani about
whom president Obama tweeted on
a social networking site “Pakistani
tech entrepreneur Faizan Buzdar is
a perfect example of why we need
immigration reforms.”
Pakistan mobile app companies
have shown extensive experience
in developing both consumer and
enterprise mobile applications for
Android, iPhone and Windows
platforms. For example, a cricket
game application developed by
Mindstorm Studio was selected as an

Dr. Naweed Syed, a Pakistani
Canadian scientist is the first
scientist who managed to connect
brain cells to a silicon chip that could
help making “Machine-Men" in near
future.
Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, a Pakistani
born astrophysicist was among the
team of scientists who, for the first
time, observed gravitational waves
in the space hypothesized by Albert
Einstein a century ago.
These promising young people
have visions to do great things for
Pakistan in the future. They are
trying to build a positive image of
Pakistan around the globe in their
own capacity. We should bring their
stories of success in the lime light to
encourage them and many others to
take chances in life and that, I think
is extremely important because
these Pakistanis from various shades
of life and professions are keen for
Pakistan to change for the better.

D
uring last vacations from
college, I went to my native
town situated near Gawadar
which is famous for its deep warm
water sea port. My uncle, and his friend
who works as a fishery officer, planned
a tour to a nearby island named Astola
Island that is administered by Pasni
sub-district of Gawadar district. We
started our voyage from Pasni Port by
motorized boats at around six in the
morning and it took about 5 hours to
reach Astola Island. While our boat was
moving on the rhythmic waves of the
Arabian Sea, my uncle started telling
me about Astola Island because he had
visited that place several times before
also.
Astola Island is also known as Jezira
Haft Talar Satadip or Island of the
seven hills. It is a small uninhabited
Pakistani Island in the Arabian Sea.
It is Pakistan`s largest offshore island
at approximately 6.7 km long with a
maximum width of 2.3 km and an area
of approximately 6.7 km2. The highest
point is 246 ft above sea level.
Throughout the voyage, so many
different types of fish gave us company.
After a travel of about some four and a
half hours, a land appeared right in the
middle of deep blue waters. As we were
moving ahead, the island was getting
more visible. From a far distance, I
could see the high hills on that island.
We reached Astola Island and shored
our boat, I saw a large sloping plateau.
The beach was uncontaminated as well
as neat, the water was clean because
very few people had visited that virgin
island. There was a series of seven
small hillocks. That is why Astola
Island is also known as “Haft Talar’’ or
“Seven Hill’’.
We moved farther and walked on the
island. There were many caves and deep
gulfs in this island which were several
feet wide. I noticed that the south face
of the Island was sloping off gradually,
whereas the north face was a cliff-like
with a sharp vertical drop.
I saw many foot prints of sea turtles on
the beach that led me to the hatcheries
of the endangered green turtle and the
hawksbill turtle nest on the beach at
the foot of the cliffs. As the island was
a quite isolated place which had helped
it to maintain several life forms on it,
therefore I saw many snakes named
Astola vipers which were creeping quite
freely on the Island. My uncle told me
that Astola is a host of many migrated
birds like Seagulls, Sanderling etc.
and also supports a large number of
breeding water birds like Temminck's
courser, Curlews, Godwit and Plovers
etc.
The thing that I liked the least on
Astola was that there were no trees on
the island. Vegetation on the island was
sparse and largely consisted of shrubs
and large bushes. There was no source
of fresh water on the island. The day
passed and the sun was about to set.
We enjoyed the beautiful sunset. It
was getting dark, but we had already
lodged in our camp and had made the
arrangements for dinner. The night was
quiet and calm but I had those creepy
Astola snakes on my mind all through
the night.
On the next day, we visited a small
mosque and the ruins of a Hindu
temple situated on Astola. The masjid
is dedicated to the Muslim saint, Pir
Khawaja Khizr, and is used by the
mainland fishermen during the fishing
season. The ruins of the ancient Hindu
temple are dedicated to the Hindu
goddess, Kali. The island was also
known to the Hindus as Satadip.
That wonderful visit of Astola was
over and we headed towards our boat.
On the beach, we met some scuba divers
who had come there for a scuba diving
expedition. Finally, we left the island
with so many mesmerizing images
printed on our mind.
Astola is indeed a hidden jewel of the
Arabian Sea. But it is sad to see that
there are no proper arrangements for
visitors. If government starts a proper
boating service and provides suitable
arrangements for the tourists who visit
Astola for oysters catching, camping,
observing green turtle hatcheries,
fishing and scuba-diving expeditions
etc., Astola can earn good revenue.
Well, if you have an adventurous
nature, visit this place, enjoy the clean
beaches, birds and strange beauty of
this virgin island.

Guest
A leopard cub was hidden in a corner deep asleep. I had
never wondered that such a cute animal had been bothering
us that much for last three nights.
M
y father works in forestry
department. About six
years ago, when I was ten
years old, we lived in a bungalow
situated in the forest. Our bungalow
was in the centre of a dense jungle,
full of wild animals. My father used
to go to the city for three to four
days a week and I mostly lived with
my elder brother and my mother at
home.
One night, when I was sleeping in
my room, I heard a strange sound
coming from the kitchen. At first, I
got frightened about what was there
and then I thought it to be just being
some voices in my head. The next
morning, I told my brother about
the strange voices coming from the
kitchen last night, but he said that
he did not notice anything as he was
deep asleep. However, the kitchen
was messed up and all the kitchen
utensils were on the floor.
The next night when I went to
my room to sleep, my heart was
frightened because of last night.
But fortunately, I noticed nothing
and slept peacefully. My eyes opened
late in the midnight on hearing the
sound of something falling on the
ground in the upper room. I woke

up immediately. I was too frightened
to go to my brother’s room to wake
him up, so, I took on my blanket and
slept again.
The next day I told my brother
everything about last night. We
went to the room on the first floor
from where the voices came last
night. Everything in the room
was scattered. The wall pictures
were on the ground and even the
window was open. The bed sheet
was on the floor and it seemed that
somebody had slept on the bed. I
was really terrified and my brother
got worried. We thought it must be
some ghost or demon haunting this
place and trying to disturb us. That
night, I slept with my brother.
Next morning when I woke up, I
was somewhat relaxed to have an
undisturbed sleep at night. But
suddenly, I felt some pain behind my
neck. There were some scratches
from a claw of a wild animal behind
my neck. I and my brother started
searching for what wild animal could
it be? We noticed some footprints
leading towards the kitchen and
there we saw some meat left halfeaten on the floor. We searched in
our kitchen and what we found was
simply amazing.

The innocent and adorable eyes
of leopard cub made us fall in love
with it and we decided to keep it
with us. We named it Zach. We kept
it till it was quite grown up. Zach
used to be my best friend and we
had a great time together. We used
to walk together, play together and
sometimes we went for hunting
together. It was really amazing
to see Zach hunting. One day, the
saddest moment of my life came
when Zach got too big for us to be
kept at home. We had to let it free in
the jungle.
Zach went to the jungle and started
its life independently. It, now, has
a family of its own in the jungle.
Zach will always be a part of my life.
Sometimes, I miss Zach and think of
having another uninvited guest to
stop by at night.

or radiocarbon dating.
The secret of the passing
time lies in the radioactive
isotope of carbon, which
is C-14.
Carbon dating is a method
used to determine the
age of an object by
examining the properties
of carbon-14 present
in it. This method was
developed by Willard
Libby, winner of the
Nobel Prize for Physics,
in the late 1940s and soon
became a mandatory tool
for archaeology.
It works on the
principle that C-14 is
constantly being made
in the atmosphere by the
interaction of cosmic rays
with atmospheric nitrogen,
resulting, to combine with
oxygen in the air to form
radioactive carbon dioxide.
This radioactive gas
incorporates with plants
during photosynthesis.
Plants, being producers,
transfer this carbon
isotope along with the
food chain into animals
and human beings. After
being dead, the organism
does not replenish any
C-14 furthermore. The
radioactive decay of C-14
along with a period of
time helps determine the
time passed by specimen
after its death.
So, the older the sample,
the lesser C-14 left behind.
In an older sample, there
is less C-14 obtained.
The oldest dates to be
recorded by carbon dating
can be 5000 years old and
specialized methods allow
us to date samples even
beyond this time.
So next time when you see
a fossil in a museum, or
buy an antique, remember
that you know its age.

ne day, I watched a movie about sharks that my
father brought me. Before watching the movie,
my perception about sharks was quite similar as
most of us have. Most of us know shark as a monstrous
and a man-eater fish but you would be surprised to
know that mostly sharks are quite gentle and the most
advanced predators present on earth.
types of fins, sharks are able to maneuver swiftly
through the water instead of their huge body while
also remaining stabilized which makes sharks some of
the strongest and most efficient swimmers in the entire
ocean. The Shortfin Mako Shark is the fastest species of
shark to date and can swim up to 65mph, a speed limit
for cars.
The most amazing fact about sharks is that they never
stop moving, even while dozing, because they cannot
breathe when they are still. In seawater, a shark can
sink because its body is denser than the water itself,
therefore they don’t sleep, but instead become very still
in what can best be described as resting. Part of their
living process is continuous motion. Surprisingly, the
shark does not have a single bone in its body. The whole
skeleton is made up of cartilage. Because of different
Sharks have a sixth sense, called electroreception which
can enable them to detect a motionless animal lying in
the sand. They can smell a drop of blood in the waters
from half a kilometer. A shark can weigh over seven
tons, and its extremely powerful jaws are large enough
for a man to crawl through. It has thousands of teeth in

their main diet.
Sharks simply don’t like the taste
of us. Humans are rarely, if ever,
completely devoured by a shark.
Seeing how sharks only use their
teeth to bite into their prey enough
to swallow it down, there must be
something else that happens when
they bite a human and leave them
uneaten. Once the shark bites the
surfer, it almost immediately lets him
go because it does not taste like its
favorite meal. Their intention while
attacking humans is not mostly

There is a misconception that
sharks’ attacks are very common and
we should fear sharks during our sea
surfing activities. But the reality is
that there is another fierce predator
in sea. According to a survey,
humans kill almost 73 million sharks
a year. Shark meat is becoming
a product that is very much in
demand these days. Approximately
125 countries around the world
are commercially fishing sharks.
Sharks are not only being fished
for their meat but for their fins,
skins and organs. It is rumored that
sharks provide an enzyme that can
help fight cancer. For that reason,
thousands of sharks are processed
into cartilage pills each year.
This day by day fishing of sharks
has raised a serious risk of sharks becoming
endangered. According to a research, in the
Arabian Sea, there are more than 47 threatened
species, six are critically endangered, six are
endangered and further are vulnerable.
Sharks are considered to be the beauty of the
sea waters. They are often thought of as being
aggressive animals that attack divers. In actual
fact, sharks are very timid and often go out of
their way to avoid divers, even great white sharks.
They maintain a balance of the world’s aquatic
ecosystems by eating weak and sick animals,
thereby keeping the population of animals in the
sea fit and healthy.
People should treat sharks with respect, as they
should with all earth's creatures. Instead of
fearing them, we should learn to appreciate these
magnificent creatures and spread awareness
among people about this gentle animal through
education instead of spreading false myths about
them. Another way is to make ocean research
available to all people. Everyone should have the
chance to learn the truth about sharks.
They are worthy of both our attention and
protection. All sharks do not attack divers. If
you are familiar enough with the sharks you
are diving with, it could be a very rewarding
experience as they are very beautiful, friendly and
graceful animals.

nmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the fascinating new feature of air
machines are aircrafts that have no human onboard. Being controlled
from the ground, these machines have made an enormous impact on
many aspects of life. From farming to pizza delivery, from border patrol to
search and rescue operations, from spying to the event coverage by electronic
and print media or even a precise and a smart courier service, UAVs have
entered every nook and corner of our existence.
A common UAV relies on a simple propulsion system such as motors for
short-range flight or a single-propeller engine for longer ranges. Equipment
necessary for sustaining a human pilot is not required which results in a
compact, light-weight and effective functional unit. They are easy to build
and can be deployed at any location. The advantage of having a short run up
makes these vehicles very dexterous compared to other alternatives. It requires
lesser cost and maintenance compared to other aeroplanes and helicopters.
Types of UAVs
UAVs can be divided into different types according to their specific use. However, they basically fall into two categories; those that are used for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes and those that are armed with missiles and
bombs.
MQ-1B Predator, RQ-4 Global Hawk, MQ-9 Reaper are some of the names
of most advanced multimillion UAVs equipped with satellite link, radar, infrared camera, laser designators and missile system.
Military Use
In military, drones are used for target and decoy, battlefield intelligence, combat missions, logistic support, surveillance, research and development. The
precision of drones can have precise accuracy, from greater distances, thus
reducing the collateral damage to civilians and infrastructure.
Commercial Use
As far as civilian functionality is concerned, UAVs can
be used in many ways. Some important implications
of UAVs are, search and rescue operations, wildlife
mapping, pipeline security and infrastructure protection,
anti-piracy and even to hack mobile phone conversations
for intelligence. Aerial film and photography service
providers are probably the heaviest commercial users of
unmanned aerial systems today.
Other commercial uses are to monitor and assess
damages and fire without endangering human lives.
Development of UAVs in Pakistan
Keeping in view the global military advancement
of drones, Pakistan has joined the race to develop
indigenous combat drones. Pakistan has developed and
acquired drones with surveillance capabilities. BURRAQ,
the first Pakistani drone with laser-guided missile
technology has been made operational. The ABABEEL,
SHAHPAR and BAAZ are some of the finest Pakistan
made drones. This makes Pakistan one of the elite
countries to have advanced military drones.
They can also be used to locate mineral resources and
geographical surveys.
Like all technologies, apart from many positive usages,
these UAVs can have much negative impact on human
life. Imagine yourself sitting in your lawn or shopping
in a market and it can be very embarrassing for you if
you know that you are constantly being watched and
monitored by someone. UAVs used for the purpose of
surveillance can disturb the private lives of people.
They can be more lethal and destructive as they can be
deployed anywhere from a far distance through satellite.
To sum up, UAVs prove to be the next big thing for
future of human advancement. They are not only used
for military operations but can also effectively be utilized
for peaceful purposes to ease out human life. But at the
same time, these can also interfere in personal lives of
people as well.
The day is not that far away when we will travel in the
aircrafts without pilots being controlled with artificial
intelligence. Air battles will be fought with no man
onboard but controlling the UAVs on ground.

novel, the author presented a character of a
soldier named Captain Bluntschli who carried
chocolates rather than cartridges, a chocolate
soldier. After reading the novel, I started

has become very popular in Europe, and its demand
exploded all over the world.
Chocolate is made from tropical Theobroma cacao tree
seeds. Cocao beans are left in the sun for a little longer
or roasted. Finally, they are unshelled and the unhusked
fruits of cacao are used for making cocoa and chocolate.
The kernels or unshelled fruits have to be ground and
processed to produce a thick mixture or paste called
“ cocoa solids’’ and it is this what we refer to when
gauging the quality of chocolate.
In a factory, the beans are roasted. Next, they are
cracked and then deshelled by a "winnower". The
resulting pieces of beans are called nibs. Most nibs are
ground into a thick, creamy paste, known as chocolate
liquor or cocoa paste.
This "liquor" is then further processed into chocolate by
mixing in more cocoa butter and sugar, and then refined,
conched and tempered. To make 1 kg of chocolate,
about 300 to 600 beans are processed, depending on the
desired cocoa content. They are then further processed
to produce the product that we know and love as
chocolate.
There are different types of chocolate, for instance,
dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, cocoa
powder, couverture chocolate and compound chocolate.
Couverture Chocolate, also known as real chocolate has
cocoa butter and chocolate liquor as main ingredients.
While compound chocolate substitutes chocolate liquor
with cocoa powder, and replaces cocoa butter with an oil.
In many sophisticated societies, After Eight Mint
Chocolate Thins are used as after-dinner mints. After
Eights were originally made from dairy-free dark
chocolate. However, in 2007, some companies started
adding butterfat to After Eights, making them a dairy
product.
As a part of nutrition and health benefits, it is
considered to be a very significant mood up-lifter.
Chocolate in our body stimulates the creation of
serotonin, known as the "happy hormone". However, the
positive effect of chocolate does not stop here! While
enjoying the chocolate, endorphin is also released - our
natural calming device that raises the sense of wellbeing
and satisfaction.
Chocolate also contains flavanoids and flavanols. A
review study published in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition confirmed earlier researches on the
benefits of chocolate flavanoids on cardiovascular health.
The researchers found that black chocolate or cocoa
reduced blood pressure and had significant effects on
LDL and HDL cholesterol. The study also found that
insulin resistance was improved by chocolate or cocoa
due to significant reductions in serum insulin.
Ivory Coast, Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria and Cameroon
are the largest cocoa producing countries. Amedei,
Leonidas, Bovetti, Valrhona Vivani and Charffen Berger
are some of the most famous chocolate brands in the
world. In Pakistan, Dairy Milk, Snickers, KitKat, Mars,
Toblerone are some famous and widely used chocolates.
People love chocolate because of its sweet aroma,
smooth texture and the way it melts in the mouth. So, at
the times when you feel low or distressed, and want to

there is no solution of sea sickness,
but yes we can overcome this
by engaging ourselves in some
task/work which keeps our mind
occupied. So like this you don’t
feel sea sick.”
Well, we couldn’t stop ourselves
from asking him why ships like
TARIQ are not constructed in
Pakistan.
The Captain clarified, “Many ships
have been constructed in Pakistan
at Karachi Shipyard. PNS ASLAT
(F-22 Ship), PNS MUNSIF & PNS
MUJAHID (mine hunters), Small
Coastal Tankers, Fast Missile &
Gun boats and PN submarines
are few examples. Let me also
tell you that Pakistan is now also
constructing Big Logistic Ship
(fuel tanker cum command ship)
which will be joining the service
very soon.”
We asked about the difference
between life on a ship and life in a
submarine.
His answer was, “Life on the ship
and life of a submarine are totally
different. The life of the ship is
to operate on the sea surface
whereas, submarine operates
under water. So it is equally
demanding and challenging.”
Then we thanked him for sparing
his time and asked his message for
students of Cadet College Ormara.
“Gentlemen, work hard and pay
focused attention towards your
studies. You are the future of this
nation and your country needs
you.” With this, he handed over
few ship’s brochures to us which
gives detailed information on
ship’s capabilities. I have kept
it with me and I will always
remember my visit to TARIQ.
We all returned to hostel with very
patriotic feeling to serve the nation
and indeed we all were really
inspired and motivated by the
visit. During our visit we took few
photographs also. We all are highly
thankful to our Cadet College and
PNS TARIQ teams who managed
and coordinated a very informative
and memorable visit for us.

Days pass by and world progresses with the advent of
every new day. There is a smiling sister who saves her
smile for the arrival of her brother, who has gone to
protect his motherland. There is a father who saves all
his affections and pieces of advice for his pride who has
been gifted to this motherland. There is a mother who
is trying new recipes of food, she will prepare on the
arrival of her son.
A soldier, a brother and a son is braving the hostile
weather and defending his motherland, Pakistan. He
plans that he will give surprise to all waiting at home.
He imagines how he will ignore and tease his sister first
and then give her gifts bought for her. He fancies how he
will share the stories of his mission with his brother and

father, but then his motherland calls him.
This true son of the soil fights against the enemies and
sacrifices his today for a country’s tomorrow by giving
his life. He fears nothing but Allah, receives bullet on his
chest and embraces the martyrdom. The brave son dies
but does not run from the battlefield. His message was
“Tell my mother not to cry because, I was a soldier born
to die”.
The brave son of the soil comes home but this time, his
body is wrapped in the national flag. The sister could
never tell that she had saved a gift for her brother. His
father could not tell that how much he was proud of his
son. His mother could not tell that she had finalized his
engagement.
I am a brave son of my motherland. I never fear the
stinging, cold, most difficult terrain and extreme weathers. My duty is above and prior to my life. I am a cadet
and this is my dream!

MY LIFE,
MY STYLE
asked my father, a few years
back, what is life? He didn’t
reply my question because he
was busy doing his office work. A
few days later, I found my father free
and asked him the same question.
He looked at me with thoughtful
eyes as if I had asked something
weird. Well, it was his style and I
was used to it. Again he didn’t speak
a single word.
This is only possible if a person
truly knows his responsibilities; his
rights, others’ rights and his due
share in others’ lives. The person
who understands the meaning of
responsibility gets contentment he
wants from his life.
I had been searching for this
question for so long. Does life mean
happiness? Does life mean sorrow,
joy, play or test? What else? Years
passed on. A few days ago, I asked
my father the same question. This
time, he was silent but his eyes filled
with worry and face with wrinkles
answered my every single question
with a single word; “responsibility”.

time, I was too young to feel my
responsibilities. Now when my
father’s face has wrinkles and his
grave voice has turned quite meek;
I understood how my father has
spent his life in the pursuit of
goodness by performing all his
responsibilities and sacrificing all
his smiles, luxuries and pleasures. I
understood every single gesture of
my father. That day, he looked at me
with winning eyes and contentment.
My life is to fulfill every
responsibility that my Allah orders
me. My life is to save others from
my tongue and hands by exercising
my responsibilities and performing
my obligations for the sake of
Allah’s love. The person who lives
for himself and falls only for his
own liberty and happiness is a
man who leads himself and his
surroundings towards distress,
though he doesn’t realize it at times.
Because liberty without limits is just
another form of servitude which
leads to discontentment. Human
rights and privileges are granted by
Allah. We cannot find contentment
and goodness by practicing
whatever we want, by ignoring and
hurting others’ freedom.

t is said that diamonds are women’s
best friend but what if they start
raining and falling from sky? It
sounds great but I am pretty sure that
diamonds wouldn’t be best friends either
for women or men if they start raining
from the sky. They surely would be
considered as the demons from hell then.
Well, on a serious note, scientists have
suggested a planet where diamonds fall
like a rain.
Astronomers think they have found
a star that was transformed and
compressed into a planet made of solid
diamond. An international research team
with scientists from Australia, Germany,
Italy, the United Kingdom, and the
United States made this discovery. The
team spotted the “diamond planet” with
the 64-meter radio telescope in Parkes,
Australia, and found that it orbits an
unusual star known as a pulsar just like
earth orbits around sun. The astronomers
consolidated their findings with followup observations with the Lovell radio
telescope in the United Kingdom and
one of the Keck telescopes on Hawaii.
Scientists of Yale University suggest
that a rocky Planet that was discovered
in 2004, called 55 Cancri e, one of five
circling the star 55 Cancri e in the
constellation of Cancer, may have a
radius twice as Earth and a mass eight
times greater from the Earth. It may
have a surface made up of graphite
and diamond. It is 40 light years away
but visible to the naked eye, however,
only in dark skies far from cities in the
constellation of Cancer. A light-year is
the distance that light travels in one year,
about 9.5 trillion kilometers.
"Science fiction has dreamed of diamond
planets for many years, so it's amazing that
we finally have evidence of its existence
in the real universe," said study leader
Nikku Madhusudhan, a postdoctoral
researcher and an astrophysicist at Yale
University.

collected data on the planet's orbital
distance and mass, and resulting
computer models created a picture of 55
Cancri e's chemical makeup.
55 Cancri e, the rocky world is only twice
the size of Earth but has eight times its
mass that classifies it as a "Super Earth,"
a new study says. First detected crossing

in front of its parent star in 2011, the
close-in planet orbits its star in only 18
hours. As a result, surface temperatures
reach an uninhabitable 3,900 degrees
Fahrenheit or 2,150 degrees Celsius,
which, alongwith carbon, make perfect
conditions for creating diamonds.
Some additional information gathered
previously by other scientists suggest
that the planet has about 8.4 times the
mass of Earth. This makes it a “SuperEarth,” meaning its mass is between 1
and 10 times that of our planet.
Other scientists had previously suggested
that 55 Cancri e was covered with a light
material, such as water. But that’s not
likely, concludes Madhusudhan. Analysis
of light from the parent star now
suggest that its chemical composition, as
well as that of the planet, is carbon-rich
and oxygen-poor. When formed, instead
of accumulating water whose molecules
contain one atom of oxygen and two
atoms of hydrogen, this planet probably
accumulated other light materials. Two
likely candidates could be carbon and
silicon.
The core of 55 Cancri e might be made
of iron. So is Earth’s. But the far away
planet’s outer layers could be a mixture
of carbon, silicates and silicon carbide.
Silicates are minerals that contain silicon
and oxygen whereas silicon carbide is
an extremely hard mineral with a very
high melting point. At the very high
pressures inside this planet, and maybe
even near its surface, much of the carbon
could be diamond. In fact, diamond could
account for up to one-third of the entire
planet’s weight.
As there are several uncertainties about
the new study, “we can’t say that we’ve
found a carbon planet yet,” says Marc
Kuchner. He’s an astrophysicist at
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, Md., who did not take part in
the planet’s analysis. However, he adds,
if there are diamond planets, “55 Cancri
e is a very strong candidate.”
The universe just got a bit richer with
the discovery of an apparent diamond
rich planet orbiting a nearby star.
However, it can be unfair to associate the
term beauty only in terms of diamonds.
Kuchner says, “It’s unfair to compare the
beauty of a planet in all of its diversity
to a single jewel.”

ow about spending vacation in the sky? I am talking about
skyscrapers. Skyscrapers are the buildings that are tall
enough to touch the skies. Structural engineers define a
skyscraper as any vertical construction for which wind is a more
significant load factor than an earthquake or weight.
Since the beginning of the civilizations, man has aspired to reach
the skies which lead him to build taller and taller buildings. However, after nineteen century, the world’s population increased with
a rapid economic growth and the need arose to build such living
places which cover less area and accommodate more people.
The early skyscrapers were kind of tall, commercial buildings built
between 1884 and 1939, largely in the American cities of New York
and Chicago. Chicago's Home Insurance Building in 1884 is considered the world's first skyscraper.
The trend of building skyscrapers is also prevailing in Pakistan.
The tallest building of Pakistan under construction is Bahria Icon
Tower in Karachi, which is expected to be completed by 2017. Its
anticipated height will be 260 m. At present the tallest building in
Pakistan is Ocean Towers Karachi which is 120m tall.
We see today that people are competing in building taller and higher
structures whereas there is no need to make such buildings. Building unnecessary structures was one of the characteristics of the
people of Aad, who were destroyed by Allah’s punishment. Prophet
Mohammad (SAW) said:
“The Final Hour will not come until people compete with one another in the height of their buildings.” (Sahi Bukhari)
Thus, competing in the construction of tall buildings is one of the
signs of arrival of the Day of Judgement.
High rise fans globally celebrate the Skyscrapers Day on 3rd September. In 2015, China was the largest skyscraper building country.
Here, I have enlisted my favorite skyscrapers around the world with
unique architectural designs and desire to visit them in my life.

Abraj Al Bait Towers
Burj Khalifa, also known as Burj Dubai is
the tallest skyscraper in the world. It is
situated in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
It is 829.82 meters tall with 163 floors.
Its construction started in 2004 and
completed in 2010. It was designed by
an American architect Adrian Smith as
chief architect, and Skidmore, Owings and
Merrill Architectures. Its architectural
style is based on Neo-futurism. The design
of Burj Khalifa is derived from Islamic
architecture, incorporating cultural and
historical elements particular to the region
such as the spiral minaret. It is designed
for residential and hotel usage.
The Abraj Al-Bait Towers, also known
as the Makkah Royal Clock Tower
Hotel, having the world’s largest clock
face, is the fourth tallest building of
the world. It is situated in Mecca, Saudi
Arabia. It was designed

Taipei 101
Tokyo Skytree
Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting,

building of the world. This tower is the
primary television and radio broadcast
site. It has 29 floors. The name Tokyo
Skytree was suggested by the people of
Japan by votes. Its construction started
in 2008 and completed in 2012. Its
architectural style is neo-futuristic. It is a
broadcasting tower which also serves as
restaurant and as an observation tower.
Shanghai Tower
The Shanghai Tower is a megatall
skyscraper in Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai.
The Shanghai Tower was designed by
the American architectural firm Gensler,
with Chinese architect Jun Xia leading the
design team. Its structural style is based on
expressionism and futurism. The building
is 632 metres high and has 128 stories. It is
used for office, retail and leisure place. The
construction of Shanghai Tower started
in 2008 and was completed in 2015. It is
also China’s tallest structure of any kind.
In 2013, a Gensler spokesman described
the tower as “the greenest super high-rise
building on earth at this point in time”.

ailure is said to be the greatest obstacle to success and one of the biggest fears in life. It is also referred as
a reason that restrains people from realizing their full potential and achieving their goals. Fear of failure
immobilizes people by restricting them to their comfort zone. It prevents people from moving forward in life,
thus hampers their chances of success.
We all know that defeat is not easy to swallow. There is no worse feeling than facing failure that leaves you bitter,
miserable and depressed. But it is an undeniable reality that all human advancements and learnings are the result of
mistakes and failures faced by man while trying. An American senator, once said, “Only those who dare to fail greatly
can ever achieve greatly.”
The failure gives us a chance to achieve our goals and become extraordinarily successful. We develop the skill of
learning from our mistakes because through mistakes, our will is compelled to take us out of our comfort zone and
let us take calculated risks, so don’t let fear of failure hold you back from reaching out your goals. The key to success
is not awaiting failure, but to overcome the fear of failure; learn from your failure and use it to build yourself.
Successful people in the history were not the most intelligent, most gifted or blessed. They were just ordinary people
who viewed failures as temporary speed breakers and “road to success”. They made mistakes, but they didn’t give up
and remained steadfast. They overcame their fear of failure and learnt from their mistakes quickly.
So let failure not demoralize us. Learn from it because failure is just a delay, not defeat. Trying does not guarantee
success, but not trying surely results in failure. Try again, fail again and fail greatly because failure is a stepping
stone to success.

I
t’s an old saying that “Sky is the limit”. It means that
if your aspirations and aims are higher, you can face
everything and can achieve whatever you want.
Life is like a stadium in which the player doesn’t know
whether he may win or lose. He has to face the hardships
of life at every moment. The fear of winning and losing
travel together but in spite of all fears and uncertainties,
man has to run the wheels of life by fulfilling his
commitments, duties and obligations with courage and
spirit.
Higher aspirations and high dreams help man to make an
individual a successful person. The entire material and
spiritual enlightenment of man is attributed to his high
aim and continuous effort. The man who once was living
in caves has now reached the moon on the wings of his
determination towards his high aims of life.

We need constant determination, at all the stages of
life to achieve our aims in life. Sometimes a player faces
defeats but his determination gives him the strength
to bear his defeat with courage and smile. His aims for
victory do not let him become sorrowful rather push him
to fight again for his ambitions.
Keeping high aims and having eyes on the skies are
necessary for human advancement and progress but it is
indispensable for that aim to be used for the welfare of
mankind. It should be under moral values. If these aims
are used for the destruction of mankind then they are a
curse to the human beings.
Our aims should be very positive and high for the
upward mobility of the mankind and our dreams should
not let us sleep.

t was a special day for me when
my father told me that we were
installing solar panels on our
house. A few days later, we took the
plunge and covered the back roof
of our house with solar panels. I
thought that the system would be
very complicated with many parts,
but it was actually quite simple. We
had the panels to generate electricity
from sunlight and an inverter for AC
power as all of the power from solar
panels was DC, or direct current.

Since that day, I got inquisitive about
solar energy, the mechanism behind
these solar panels and how humans
started thinking to use solar energy
as an alternative of fossil energy or
other traditional sources of energy.
The energy received by the
Earth from the sun, primarily as
visible light and other forms of
electromagnetic radiation is called
solar energy. The sun is the ultimate
source of life on earth. We are
dependent on sun for all our food
and fuel. In 1839, a nineteen year old
boy named Edmund Becquerel first
discovered the photo electric effect.
The first solar cell was built around
1883 by Charles Fritts, which
used junctions formed by coating
Selenium with an extremely thin
layer of gold.
A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell, is
an electrical device that converts
the energy of light directly into
electricity by the photovoltaic effect,
which is a physical and chemical
electricity and is known as Photovoltaic effect.
The amount of current generated by a PV cell
depends on its efficiency, its size and the intensity of
sunlight striking the surface. For example, under
peak sunlight conditions, a typical commercial PV
cell with a surface area of about 25 square inches
will produce about 2 watts peak power.
There are many countries, for example Germany,
China, Japan, and USA, which depend largely on
solar energy to meet their power needs. However,
Germany stands on top among the largest solar
energy producing countries. According to a survey,
developing countries can cover all their demands for
energy by solar systems.
Talking about our country, Pakistan has been in
the grip of severe energy shortages for many years
with some rural areas left without power for up to
