The economic region of East Wuerttemberg –
automotive competence from A to Z.
With its longstanding tradition in the fields of metal working and machining as well as mechanical engineering, East Wuerttemberg has developed into a region of industry, business and economy with a high
level of automotive competence, not least because of its proximity to the world-famous automotive region
of Stuttgart.
In this respect, East Wuerttemberg as an economic region remains true to its motto »Region of talents and
patents«. Its ranking as the eighth strongest of the 97 German regions in the field of mobility patent registrations proves how strong the powers of innovation and the technological efficiency of its companies are.
Networking between the industries and cooperation with universities, transfer and research institutes
enhances these strengths. In addition to its outstanding transportation infrastructure and its central location
in the »Technology Triangle« of Stuttgart – Ulm – Nuremberg, the region offers attractive framework

Automotive Industry
It is estimated that every seventh job in Germany, in Baden-Wuerttemberg even every sixth,
is directly or indirectly dependent on automobile manufacturing. The automotive industry
is still considered one of the most important growth markets. Increasingly shorter product
life cycles, the concentration in particular of the OEM sector on core competences and the
growing complexity of automobiles offer automotive suppliers significant growth potential – on the condition that they succeed in meeting the challenges of today’s changing
economic structures, for instance, by means of cooperative alliances and networking.
The East Wuerttemberg region is well prepared to meet these challenges!
This region is investing in

The region of East Wuerttemberg has an efficient network of companies and institutes
and also university and research foundations tailored to the needs of the automotive
industry.
Well over two hundred companies employing more than 30.000 people either directly or
indirectly supply the manufacturers of cars, trucks, utility vehicles and special vehicles.
They represent the industries that are of major relevance to the automotive sector and
benefit from their proximity to leading suppliers of all tier levels, not to mention twelve of
the largest OEM companies within a radius of only 300 km – a decisive argument in favour
of choosing East Wuerttemberg as a location.

Competent and multi-faceted
The flagship of ZF Lenksysteme GmbH
(ZFLS) is its active front steering system
AFS which has been being installed
in the BMW 5 and 3 series since 2005 and
which constitutes a quantum leap as
far as driving comfort and safety are concerned (awarded the Innovation Prize
of the German industry 2003).
The automotive region of East Wuerttemberg provides a far-reaching and extremely multilayered range of services: the range of companies and competencies in this economic region
extends from providers of single components to complete system suppliers, from local SME
industry to global player corporations.
Examples for outstanding automotive companies located in this area are ZF Lenksysteme
GmbH (ZFLS) in Schwäbisch Gmünd which, with a workforce of over 4.000, produces complete steering systems for the automotive industry, or the ALFING Group in Aalen employing approximately 1.750 people and producing crankshafts and forged parts, not to mention production and assembly technology such as hardening systems and processing centres,
transfer lines and assembly systems also for the premium automotive sector.

Aalen University – Engineering and Business Studies (HTW)
Automotive engineering is one of the main subjects on the General Mechanical
Engineering curriclum at Aalen University, where graduates are prepared for
their tasks in design, construction, manufacturing and sales in the automotive industry. Apart from general mechanical engineering, there are countless further
connections between the course of studies of automotive engineering and the
fields of plastics engineering, production technology, surface technology, electronics
and information technology, computer sciences, mechatronics not to mention optoelectronics which are all open to students as interdisciplinary programmes of
