Intelligence Report 2011 Year in Review / Style Analytics Welcome to the Year in Review issue of the Polyvore Intelligence Report, an insight into activity on Polyvore from January through November 2011. We’ve seen tremendous growth across the site, with the Polyvore community nearly doubling as the number of monthly unique visitors grew from 6.2 million in January to more than 12.2 million in November. At Polyvore, you won’t find a professional staff of editors creating content. Rather, we rely on our incredibly talented global community of creators. In November, our community produced more than 1.2 million sets, a 25 percent increase from January. We are inspired daily by the creativity and beauty of these magazine-worthy designs. We also worked with partnering brands to engage our community and offer opportunities that create a sense of excitement on Polyvore. In 2011, one lucky Polyvore contest winner was selected to style Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo for a runway show and attend the show with Linda. Another Polyvore user, was chosen by Vogue editors as part of our Fashion’s Night Out Style Setter challenge, and was invited to attend a Vogue photo shoot in New York and tour the famed Vogue Fashion closet. In September, Saks Fifth Avenue debuted the Rebecca Minkoff “Dee” clutch. The handbag was designed by Dee, an aspiring fashion designer from Michigan, as an entry for Rebecca Minkoff’s Runway Design Challenge. Polyvore users are not just active on Polyvore.com, they also share their favorite sets and items across other social platforms. In November alone, more than 400,000 social media shares of Polyvore content resulted in more than 135 million views across Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Like Polyvore, other highly visual and social platforms have seen incredible growth throughout the year. Instagram has changed the way people share snapshots on the fly. Everyone from editors to buyers and everyday people got in on the act during Fashion Week, sharing images of street style, backstage, and runway looks. Twitter is another platform with a clear fashion following. This year, models, designers and editors tweeted from the front lines of Fashion Week. Image-heavy, microblog Tumblr allowed users to consume and share images, text and links. With an easy-to-use platform that allowed for quick consumption and sharing of beautiful content, it’s no surprise that 180 of the top 1000 Tumblr blogs churned out fashion-related photographs and editorial. By creating authentic and engaged voices, more brands are initiating dialogue with consumers than ever before. Regardless of which social media platforms a brand decides to partner with, it’s all part of a movement to democratize fashion. Looking forward to 2012, the fashion industry is asking for more metrics to measure success on social platforms. What does it mean when a user shares a set, posts a picture or blogs about your brand? How many people does it reach? Who does it reach? These are very valid questions that we will work to answer. As for Polyvore, we look forward to continued expansion. We are actively developing even more innovative ways to get Polyvore content into the hands of consumers, the details of which we cannot wait to share with you in the weeks ahead. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]. Meanwhile, enjoy our 2011 Year in Review! Sincerely, Lester Lee Head of Sales 100 View Street Suite 101 • Mountain View, CA 94041 • polyvore.com polyvore overview Yearly overview / Yearly traffic / Demographics / Social distribution / Community distribution yearly overview 53,155,901,483 total product impressions Jewelry 5,178,721,694 Footwear 4,933,557,879 Tops 3,596,577,053 Beauty 3,574,107,222 Dresses 2,789,938,670 Handbags 2,512,593,480 Accessories 2,450,303,048 Outerwear 1,618,292,365 Skirts 856,138,550 Jeans 756,339,386 Shorts 582,322,136 Pants 475,129,629 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 5 yearly overview 84,427,915 14:35 min unique visitors average time spent on site/visitor (non-bounce visits) 46,781,384 12,294,415 total products indexed sets created 1,598,826,619 60% pages viewed returning visitors growth in unique visitors during 2011 15M 12,291,729 12M 9M 6,278,248 6M 3M n c v o o t p se g l n u a ju ju pr y ma a mar N b fe JA Source: Google Analytics, 2011; Polyvore Style Analytics, 2011; comScore, 2011 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 6 yearly traffic 9 1 3 4 8 6 2 10 7 5 US 1 New York 3 Chicago 5 Houston 7 Dallas 9 2 Los Angeles 4 San Francisco 6 Washington 8 Philadelphia 10 San Diego Seattle 9 3 2 1 10 5 7 8 6 4 global 1 United States 3 Canada 5 Italy 7 Germany 9 2 United Kingdom 4 Australia 6 Brazil 8 Mexico 10 France Russia Source: Google Analytics, 2011 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 7 Demographics 73% women visitors 55% 18-34 years 17% 35-44 years 81% Facebook 61% blog or Tumblr 51% Twitter online activity 174 index 53% 50% 39% 32% household income $150K+ magazines read 81% of visitors 76% of visitors have discovered or researched fashion products online before purchasing in-store influence their friends’ style age distribution 139 index household income $100K+ Teen Vogue Vogue Elle Glamour Source: Polyvore user survey June, 2011; Nielsen @Plan September, 2011 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 8 Polyvore’s social network presence social distribution 143,603 151,391 90,000 Facebook fans Twitter followers monthly Polyvore blog views Polyvore’s organic distribution through its community members in 2011 community distribution social network TOTAL 2011 Year in Review # of Posts or Shares Total Impressions per social network 1,488,752 271,965,755 852,100 53,682,300 1,705,718 93,814,490 312,542 26,566,070 46,062 1,727,325 4,405,174 447,755,940 Polyvore Intelligence Report 9 Polyvore’s organic distribution through its community members in 2011 community distribution MILLIONS OF IMPRESSIONS THROUGH COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTION ON SOCIAL NETWORKS DURING 2011 150M Wordpress + Blogger 120M Twitter Tumblr 90M Facebook 60M 30M n c v o o t p se g l n u a ju ju pr y ma a mar N b fe JA organic impression growth social network impression growth 14,825% 340% 627% 330% 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 10 FEATURED TOP trends 2011 featured top trends 1 Prints 2 Minimalism 3 Monochrome 4 Florals 5 Menswear-inspired 6 Trousers 7 Ladylike accessories 8 Navajo-inspired 9 Glitz 10 Bold beauty 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 12 2011 top trends prints When it came to prints, 2011 saw it all: polka dots at Marc Jacobs, stars at Dolce & Gabanna, snakeskin at Chloé, citrus fruits at Stella McCartney and everything in between. From tiny prints to large abstracts, prints were often mixed and matched back to one another. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 13 2011 top trends minimalism Phoebe Philo's Céline influence was seen across the industry and on Polyvore this year. The look is marked by simple, elegant silhouettes that allow beautiful fabrics in subdued or punchy colors to take center stage. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 14 2011 top trends monochrome From neons and neutrals to bold jewel tones and patterns, monochrome ruled the runways this year and Polyvore users took note. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 15 2011 top trends florals Florals carved out a space of their own on Polyvore this year. Elegant dresses and blouses in small-scale florals evolved in a big way. By the second half of the year, florals were bold and artful, and, for a bit of added whimsy, often seen on bottoms. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 16 2011 top trends Menswear-inspired Polyvore users borrowed typical menswear looks like ankle cropped trousers with oxford heels to shirting styled back to tuxedo jackets. For the ultimate modernity, menswear-inspired pieces were paired with feminine accessories. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 17 2011 top trends Trousers This year, we saw a distinct shift away from stovepipe and skinny pants. The movement towards voluminous bottoms was marked most notably by trousers, but also by bellbottoms, palazzo pants and maxi skirts. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 18 2011 top trends Ladylike accesories Though this look was seen across categories, from tweed and lace to elegant capes and leather pieces that were more sweet than tough, the ladylike trend on Polyvore was dominated by accessories. Ankle strap shoes, top handle bags, pumps, clutches, leather gloves and floppy hats reigned supreme. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 19 2011 top trends Navajo-inspired After seeing this look on the runways of Isabel Marant and Proenza Schouler, navajo-inspired garments took off on Polyvore. This trend was seen in feather earrings, beaded jewelry, fringe accessories and navajo-inspired prints. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 20 2011 top trends Glitz Marked by lurex, shimmer, sequins and paillettes, glitz and glamour were all over Polyvore this year. No longer confined to eveningwear, we saw this look in pencil skirts, harem pants, tap shorts and shift dresses. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 21 2011 top trends Bold Beauty From metallic nails to ultra bright orange lips, this year was dominated by fresh-faced looks which allowed hot pops of neon lip or nail colors to shine. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 22 trending topics Digital Initiatives / Pop Culture / Color / Runway Report 2011 trending topics digital initiatives The Polyvore community took note of the many incredible digital initiatives over the past year. Here are two highlights. Burberry enjoyed a sustained lift in engagements on Polyvore during the month of September thanks to some impressive initiatives. Burberry released its new fragrance, Burberry Body, early in September. A beautiful image of spokesmodel Rosie HuntingtonWhitely with the fragrance, shot by Mario Testino, was released exclusively to Polyvore, and our users were invited to create sets around it. As a result of this partnership, combined with other initiatives around its fragrance launch, Burberry saw a tremendous lift during the first half of September. On September 19, as part of its runway show during London Fashion Week, Burberry staged the first ever Tweetwalk. Spring 2012 looks were debuted on Twitter before they came down the runway, so that digitally savvy followers previewed the collection before editors and buyers. Thanks to these campaigns, Burberry saw a 25 percent lift on Polyvore in September. Major star power from models, celebrities and fashion insiders created a tremendous buzz around the Versace for H&M collaboration. In addition to tapping bloggers and staging a runway show and party to build excitement around the collection, Versace for H&M was also promoted across social channels. The brands used Facebook, Twitter and a YouTube video featuring Donatella Versace herself to drive traffic on Polyvore. In conjunction with Polyvore, H&M asked users to style pieces from the collection. The campaign elicited so much excitement that it was our largest to date, with more than 20,000 entries in five days. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 24 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 25 2011 trending topics pop culture The Polyvore community is ever buzzing about It Girls du jour. Actresses, bloggers, models and celebrities known for their influence and personal style are always trending on Polyvore. For 2011, Karlie Kloss, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss and Kate Bosworth continued to rise in popularity thanks to their enviable brands of laidback cool. In August we held our first Polyvore Blogger Awards and asked the community to tell us whose style they favor across five categories. We saw sets dedicated to countless bloggers, but in the end, Atlantic Pacific, Style Scrapbook, Because I’m Addicted, Hanneli, The Looks for Less and Kayture were most favored among the Polyvore community. Natalie Portman and Emma Watson were both popular for their red carpet styles. Culminating at the Academy Awards with her win for Best Actress in Black Swan, Portman made the awards show rounds this year in Rodarte, Dior, Givenchy, Azarro and Viktor & Rolf. Emma Watson came into her own and shined as she made the premier rounds for her film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. Watson favored Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, Bottega Veneta and Elie Saab Haute Couture and the Polyvore community took note. Perhaps most notable of all was the Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen stunner worn by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, as she married the future King of England. Kate has long been admired for her sense of style and has appeared on countless Best Dressed lists, so it was no surprise that her wedding day drew much speculation about who would create her dress. As the world watched, Kate emerged in an incredible lace and satin design by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. In the days following the Royal Wedding, the Alexander McQueen brand skyrocketed 24 percent on Polyvore. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 26 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 27 2011 trending topics color We knew it was going to be a year for color when the King of Black, Alexander Wang, did not send a single black garment down his Spring 2011 runway. In stark contrast with previous collections, Wang showed pieces in a subtle palette of white, seafoam, silver and shades of nude and camel. From neons and jewel tones to nude and blush, soft and bold color continued to punctuate the Spring and Fall runways and dominate Polyvore. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 28 2011 trending topics runway report As with most consumers of luxury apparel, Polyvore users are perpetually one season ahead of trends. In August, as most people are rounding out their warm weather wardrobes at summer sales and enjoying the last days of summer, Polyvore consumers have turned their attention to Fall. As an avid consumer of fashion from the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris, the Polyvore user is astute at following trends ahead of their arrival in stores. She knows that the best of Fall will begin to appear in August and uses that to her best advantage. Similarly, we begin to see resort favorites like hot pink, cerulean and nautical trending in November and December as people are planning their warm-weather getaways. Come January, we will once again see a shift as fashion enthusiasts are re-inspired by the new Spring arrivals in-stores and online. 2011 Year in Review Polyvore Intelligence Report 29 FEATURED TOP
