Finding the Heart in - Brandywine Valley SPCA
Finding the Heart in HUMANITY 2015 Annual Report Letter from the CEO & Board President Jointly, as the Chief Executive Officer and President of the Board of Directors of the Brandywine Valley SPCA, we want to thank this wonderful community for your continued support and encouragement. Throughout 2015 the BVSPCA Senior Leadership team and Board of Directors has tirelessly partnered together to expand and enhance our animal shelter in a lot of exciting new ways that we’re happy to share with you in this 2015 Annual Report. The work of the Brandywine Valley SPCA is an exercise in capturing the outstanding service and collective goodwill of all of our stakeholders including volunteers, staff, board members and donors, and converting it into life-changing experiences for our community; animals and people alike. Our success would not be possible without you, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Throughout this 2015 Annual Report you’ll be learning about all of the progress we’ve made in 2015 such as becoming Pennsylvania’s first “No Kill,” Open Admission shelter, the grand opening of our full scale Animal Health Center, and the award of a three year contract with the state of Delaware to provide lifesaving animal control services for the entire state. We have also launched and expanded a wide variety of Safety Net programs that ensure the families in our community have the resources and support they need to keep pets happy and healthy in their loving homes. Another critical area where we have improved in 2015 is related to ensuring that we are a responsible organization and good corporate citizen for our community. The Board of Directors added new members to the team who are fully committed to upholding the highest standards of performance for leadership across the Board of Directors and throughout the shelter. You’ll find from this 2015 Annual Report that we performed at the highest levels of financial performance, fiscal responsibility, and accountability and transparency. A strong team approach has been critical for the success of this organization, and we have partnered together every day to cultivate engagement and a commitment to our mission, vision, and corporate values across all levels and roles of the organization. We personally thank all of you – our donors, staff and volunteers, for your steadfast support of the Brandywine Valley SCAP throughout this time of growth and development. With your partnership, we can continue to protect, care and advocate for, the animals in our community. With deepest gratitude, we invite you as our friend and supporter to continue choosing the Brandywine Valley SPCA as your vehicle for making change in the animal world. As a trusted partner and advocate, you may recall that 2014 saw the start of multiple successful initiatives and programs: the Muhly Spay/Neuter Clinic, Henry’s Cupboard, enrichment programs for our shelter animals, the Wellness Clinic, and several important safety net programs intended to help owned pets remain in their loving homes. In 2015 our goal was to expand and perfect these initiatives in service of our organization’s vision; “to be the recognized leader in animal welfare that empowers communities to treat life with respect and dignity.” We accomplished our 2015 goals in the following ways: BVSPCA becomes Pennsylvania’s first Open Admission, “No Kill” shelter In August of 2015, after 12 months of hard work towards saving lives, the BVSPCA was able to declare ourselves the first Open Admission “No Kill” shelter in the entire state of Pennsylvania, having achieved a live release rate of over 90% for 12 consecutive months. We have remained the only Open Admission, “No Kill” shelter in the state of Pennsylvania and have maintained an average live release rate of 94%, as we continue into 2016. This accomplishment was the first of many big changes to improve the face of animal welfare in our community. Malvern Animal Health Center opens in response to increased demand for health & wellness services Due to the growing success of our animal health & wellness services, such as the Muhly Spay/ Neuter Clinic, we began to see our shelter becoming more crowded with increased traffic to our West Chester location. In September we took a huge step forward by purchasing our Animal Health Center at 9 Coffman Street in Malvern. By adding this additional space, we have been able to allot dedicated resources for animal healthcare, and have also moved our intake process to our Malvern location as well, freeing up valuable space inside the shelter to expand our lifesaving programs. To top it all off, we were able to purchase additional equipment for the clinic including a digital x-ray machine thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities®, and with this, the Animal Health Center became a full service veterinary clinic. BVSPCA advocates for animal welfare in Delaware State As we headed into the end of 2015, the Brandywine Valley SPCA put into motion events that would lead us to expanding our service area to include the entire state of Delaware, in addition to the services and advocacy already provided to Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania. To provide the highest level of care and engagement with our new community in Delaware State, a brand new shelter and health clinic was built in New Castle, Delaware, with a grand opening in early 2016. With our expansion of services and support into the state of Delaware, the decision was made that we would change our name from the Chester County SPCA to the Brandywine Valley SPCA, signifying our partnership with, and support of, the variety of communities we serve in both Pennsylvania and Delaware. Our Programs Adoption - Brandywine Valley provided shelter to over 5,500 animals in 2015. All animals available for adoption have been examined by a veterinarian, sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped. Adoption fees vary. Spay/Neuter - The Muhly Spay/Neuter Clinic provides high-quality, low cost spay/neuter for owned pets in our community. Animal Health Center - The Animal Health Center offers affordable full service veterinary care for both shelter pets and owned pets. Community Cats - A “Community Cat” is defined as any unowned cat - whether the cat is feral, abandoned, lost or living in a colony. The Brandywine Valley SPCA offers a program where cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, identified with an ear notch and returned to their colonies or caretakers for a minimal fee. Critter Camp - Week-long summer camp for children ages 8-12 years of age taught by a registered teacher. Attendees make crafts, learn about care and careers with animals and play with our many adoptable pets. Foster Program - Because the Brandywine Valley SPCA is an open admission shelter that takes in stray and abandoned animals, we are always in need of foster homes to temporarily house animals to give them a second chance at fulfilling lives. Safety Net Programs - The Brandywine Valley SPCA offers several safety net programs such as a pet food pantry, free shot clinics, behavioral advice, and affordable veterinary care in order to help keep pets in their homes where they belong. Volunteer Opportunities - Our dedicated and tireless volunteers play a vital role in almost every aspect of our shelter. Last year they volunteered more than 13,500 hours walking dogs, playing with cats, and helping at our special events and outreach. 2016 Look Ahead As we stepped out of 2015 and into 2016, we were full of hope and dreams for the future of the Brandywine Valley SPCA and all of the animals and families we support. In 2016 our goals include 8,000 adoptions, 10,000 spay/neuter surgeries, and open a pet adoption boutique in Southern DE, and we’re on our way to achieving those goals through the first half of this year: • 3,834 adoptions • 5,542 Spay/Neuter • Grand Opening of PetSmart ® Everyday Adoption Center in Dover, DE Whether past, present, or future, we here at the Brandywine Valley SPCA never forget that it is your belief and support that allows all of our goals to be achieved. Our accomplishments on behalf of the animals of Chester and Delaware counties, and now in the state of Delaware as well, are truly your accomplishments as well. With your continued support, we look forward to a brilliant future, filled with compassion, respect, and dignity, for all creatures in our communities.
