The Inventor’s Dilemma:
The Remarkable Life of
H. Joseph Gerber
In Conversation with Dan Haar,
columnist, The Hartford Courant
These are exciting times for the Mandell JCC. We have completed
our Centennial year of great programs, looking back, looking ahead,
and celebrating the JCC’s role in “Building Community – One Century
at a Time.”
During our Centennial, we saw many wonderful highlights:
•W
e had a huge Kick-off event last December, a big Summer Bash
this August, and our Closing Finale on Dec. 13, 2015.
•W
e brought back the Purim Festival in March and a new Shabbat in
Elizabeth Park in May.
•W
e staged Fiddler on the Roof with an intergenerational cast, for
the first time in 32 years.
•W
e have booked the sensational David Broza to open the Jewish
Film Festival in March.
nd in December, our Board made the historic and unanimous
•A
decision to open the new Mandell JCC Valley Sports and
Community Center in Canton – the Jewish community’s biggest
foray into the Farmington Valley area.
In addition, we completed the renovation and transformation of the
Firehouse into our Administrative Building – now home to 20+ JCC
employees.
By the end of January, we will have completed the renovations to the
Social Wing program spaces, including renovated activity rooms,
expanded Café J, new Kids Korner After-School Suite and Quiet
Member Lounge.
All of these wonderful things cannot happen without terrific staff,
strong Board members, many dedicated partners, and generous
donors. But we would not be the place we are without the amazing
and unprecedented generosity of Joyce and Andy Mandell. Not only
have they made possible this entire renovation project, they have
helped to make it possible for us to continue to grow and build
community – well into next century.
Now it’s our turn: Joyce and Andy have helped us Build; now it’s our
job to help Sustain the JCC.
We must meet our goal to raise $5 million for the JCC’s Endowments,
as part of the Aim Chai Community Endowment Campaign – and we
are 40% of the way there. These carefully invested endowment funds
grow over time, with the JCC benefitting each year – in perpetuity –
from the earnings.
As we enter our 101st year, we are coming to our members and our
community for the very first time to ask for your support of our
Endowment Funds – and make a true investment in our future. You
can give to a number of JCC endowment funds or create one of your
own, with your name or the name of your family. See the full color
spread in this program guide for more details, look for materials in
the mail, and look for JCC emails in your inbox.
We need to think of the generations that will follow us and the
obligation we have to leave them a JCC that is as great as we are
right now. Please give us a call if you would like to talk about the JCC
and the roles it has played in your lives and in your families’ lives.

NEW! THE MAKING OF A MENSCH –
PJ LIBRARY PARENTS LEARNING NIGHT
So many of the PJ Library books teach our children what it means to
be a mensch – a good person. How can we use Jewish values to
build our children’s character? Learn with a local rabbi and watch The
Moxie Institute’s film, “The Making of a Mensch.” Make a plan for
your family about ways to improve the lives of others and the
community by learning ways to improve yourself.

PJ Library is a Family Engagement Program. Through PJ Library,
children with a Jewish Connection, ages 6 months through 8
years old, receive a FREE age-appropriate book or CD filled with
Jewish traditions and values each month. The books and CDs
are chosen by children’s literature and music experts. Children
who are enrolled in the program eagerly anticipate the arrival
of their new book in the mail and are so excited when that blue
and white envelope addressed to them comes.
PJ Library is facilitated by the Mandell JCC. The books are a gift from the
Harold Grinspoon Foundation and funded locally by the Jewish Community
Foundation advised by the Zachs Family, and the Lions of Judah through the
Women’s Philanthropy Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford.
PJ Library in the Greater Hartford community supports families
in their Jewish journey. Don’t let your family miss out on this

If you have diabetes you probably are monitoring your sugar
levels. Do you know if your readings are accurate? Are you
sure what the best times to check are? How many times a day
should you check? Has anyone told you what the
recommended range is? Do you know about “pattern
management?” This class will focus on these subjects to help
ensure you are getting the most out of monitoring.

HARD PLAY
January 10, 2016 – February 13, 2016
Opening Reception with the artist
January 10, 2016 | 1-3 pm
Colby’s work is immersed in childish and superficial environments
as a diversion from a lack of control in life and the world. In a
world of uncertainty, stripes and patterns often represent an
order and continuity that is interrupted by bursts of confident
glitter and color, or dirty, gritty setbacks.
Elsie Kagan
EVERYTHING IS GREEN
February 20 – March 20, 2016
Opening Reception with the artist
February 21, 2016 | 2-4 pm
Elsie Kagan’s recent work draws from both 17th Century Northern
European painting and live observation, fusing the form of
familiar, older works with an attention to paint’s materiality;
looking for both pictoral space and surface ‘presence,’ without
sacrificing either. Her work describes the way stems of a plant
refract in water, and also how gravity pulls color down a surface,
seeking that charged moment when paint is both a smear and a
cluster of blossoms.
