Hand Me Down Dobes
Raising Funds for our Furkids!
With costs ever-increasing to care for the dogs in our program, our enthusias c fundraising volunteers kicked into
high gear this past year finding crea ve ways to bring in needed funds. HMDD held a variety of events from Columbus
to Cleveland, including wine tas ng at Wyando e Winery, beer tas ng at Savor Growl, and par cipa on at the Hills
Market Charity Happy Hour. With beau ful weather, we headed outdoors for our annual spring me Dash for Dobes
5K Run and Fun Walk at Alum Creek State Park, and held our 20th Doberfest in the fall at Companion Club Dog Park.
Our first Spooktakular Sprint 5K Run and Fun Walk held at Sunny Lake Park in October was a huge success, raising
over $5,000 to help the dogs in our care! A big THANK YOU to our volunteers and the businesses that support HMDD,
making these events possible! Please shop at these businesses and let them know how much you appreciate their

Every Dobe Deserves a Forever Home
Season’s Gree ngs and Happy Holiday Wishes from all of us at Hand Me Down Dobes! As we wrap
up our twen eth year as a nonprofit rescue, we are keenly aware that without you - our adopters,
volunteers, and donors, we could have never achieved this milestone. We thank you for your belief
in our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and find loving, forever homes for as many Dobes as possible,
making HMDD what it is today - the oldest and largest Doberman rescue based in Ohio. We came
across this poem, and felt it sums up our commitment and answers why we strive so hard to help
those that cannot help themselves.

So far this year we have placed almost 60
deserving Dobes into wonderful forever homes,
and we s ll have a few weeks to go! These
successful adop ons will be added to the
amazing number of over 1500 doberkids we
have saved over the past twenty years! HMDD
has helped so many dogs in need, each special
and cherished, with their own story to tell. We
wanted to wrap up the year with a glimpse of
some memorable dogs we have rescued, and
their compelling dobertales
of survival and resilience.
We are grateful for your
unwavering and generous
support, allowing us to be
“Rescue Angels” making a
posi ve difference in the
life of a Doberman in need,
regardless of age or medical
condi on.
Brooks came to us from a rural
Ohio county pound in 2003.
Turned-in by his owners, the
paperwork stated that this 2
yr. old doberboy had lived his
en re life in their basement
and was never let out, even to
po y. This “blue” youngster
was in poor condi on, and our
transport volunteer was taken aback, not only
by his rough, neglected appearance but also his
strong, offensive smell. Brooks was immediately
taken to our vets where this friendly boy was
scraped, poked and prodded, with his hairless
li le stub wiggling non-stop! Infested with fleas,
Brooks also had a skin infec on, ear infec on,
and vitamin D deficiency due to lack of sunlight.
He was bathed and his over two-inch long
toenails were trimmed, and when all the filth was
washed away it was realized that he was a black
doberboy, not a blue! A er several months in
foster care, this good-natured dog was adopted
and finally given a loving home of his own.
The next year Arden was picked up as a stray
and landed in a kill shelter. A picture is worth
a thousand words with this velcro 2 yr. old, and
it was obvious he had gone without food for a
long me. Although emaciated, Arden was a
basically healthy dog with no other problems,
and with regular meals in his
foster home he put the weight
back on. Arden was friendly
with other dogs and loved
everyone he met! Young and
playful, he loved toys and
romps at the park. Arden was
quickly adopted!
Li le Grace came into rescue
in 2007 desperately needing
our help. At only 3 months
old, she was cri cally ill with
parvovirus and had been
abandoned in a yard, le
to die. Grace was severely
emaciated and dehydrated,
and had mul ple BB wounds
from being used as target
prac ce. A Good Samaritan
found her and immediately contacted HMDD.
With excellent care from our vets and around
the clock a en on, this li le dobergirl pulled
through, even though it was touch-and-go for
several days. Grace required addi onal me in
foster care to regain her strength, and learn to
trust people again. Adopted by the Holtz family,
Grace was finally in a safe and loving forever
home. Although s ll very unsure of people, Grace
immediately bonded with the male Dobe in her
new home.
Just in me for the holidays of 2008, several HMDD foster
parents were not shopping for family gi s, but instead were
busy providing constant care to 5 very sick puppies that had
been “gi ed” to an Ohio animal shelter. These ny pups, 4
girls and 1 boy, were infected with parvovirus, life-threatening
to any dog, but even more so to puppies. Garland, Holly and
Vixen were the strongest of the 5, and with diligent care they
rebounded fairly quickly. Poor Eve and Donnor also contracted
pneumonia, and frail Donnor was the sickest puppy of all. He
required food and care every two hours, day and night. Too
congested to breathe while laying down, his devoted foster
mom held him upright on her chest to keep his airway open,
pa ng him to help loosen and break up the conges on.
All of the worry, me, care, and veterinary expenses were so
worth it, with all of these puppies making full recoveries and
finding the loving homes they deserved. Garland, Holly, Vixen,
Eve and Donnor are now all grown up, and have matured into
true ambassadors for the breed.
Garland, renamed Lily, was adopted by the Peifer family and
began training classes right away with the goal of assis ng
their daughter, Ashley. Enthusias c and eager to learn, Lily
received cer fica on as a therapy and service dog, helping
Ashley become more independent outside of the home.
Always by Ashley’s side both day and night, Lily accompanies
her to the mall, restaurants, and has even been in court during
guardianship hearings. Lily also assists others at the Peifer’s
day program for adults with developmental disabili es.
Holly, renamed Ava, also completed advanced training classes
and is a cer fied therapy dog. Ava regularly visits assisted
living facili es where she brings joy and companionship to
those that need cheer, and doberlove to those no longer able
to have pets of their own.
Eve, renamed Aeris, Donnor and Vixen are all beloved family
pets and living happy lives. Aeris calls a 250 acre farm in
Kentucky her home, enjoying her days howling at the coyotes,
hiking in the woods, and playing “big sister” to children Logan
and Ronin. Vixen is a sweet, smart and independent dobergirl
that has a sprinkle of “diva” in her. Donnor is a happy-go-lucky
guy that loves everyone he meets. His li le “brother”, Liam,
adores him and they are best buddies!
Ana came into rescue in the summer of 2009. Picked up as
a stray, Ana had a severely contorted front leg, was covered
in fleas, and obviously had many li ers of puppies. Upon
evalua on at our vet’s, it was determined that her twisted,
unusable leg had been broken long ago, and was unable to be
saved. Sadly, this old break had been le untreated, leaving
Ana in pain and discomfort while s ll being used for breeding.
HMDD did what was right, and Ana’s useless leg was removed
so she was finally able to romp and play free from pain.
Ana was adopted by the Voorhis family, and now enjoys a
pampered life. She leads the pack in her home, and with two
fenced acres she loves outside me with her canine siblings.
Every weekend is spent at the family’s country home with
wide open space and wild turkeys to chase. Lately Ana has
started to slow down a bit, so now the family brings a cart
when on long walks and when Ana is ready to take a rest, she
hops in the cart to con nue with the adventure.
Most of you will remember our sweet Lotus, coming into
rescue during the winter of 2013. Found by a homeowner as
he was pulling into his driveway, Lotus was lying on the front
lawn, so emaciated, frail and weak she was barely alive. This
Good Samaritan quickly wrapped her in blankets and drove
her straight to MedVet. Weighing only 28 pounds, her pulse
was weak, she was hypoglycemic and severely dehydrated.
It was doub ul she would survive, but with a strong will
to live and excellent medical care, Lotus pulled through.
A er months in foster care, Lotus has completely filled out
and truly blossomed. She is s ll unsure of most men and
new situa ons, but her foster family con nues to provide
the “baby steps” she needs to gain confidence and trust with
others. Lotus will make a sweet and affec onate companion
in a home that is right for her.
Our newest special needs Dobe is li le Mira. This precious
pup was only 2 weeks old when she suffered a trauma c brain
injury and lack of oxygen, resul ng in failure to thrive. Coming
into rescue at 9 weeks old, ny Mira weighed only 9 pounds.
She had balance issues and would lean to the right. Vision was
a concern, and with addi onal tests it was found that although
Mira’s eyes are normal, the brain injury prevents her from
processing what she sees. The world to Mira looks as if being
viewed through the bo om of a Coke bo le.
Mira has been in foster care for several months, and we are
thrilled with her progress. She is being exposed to new sights,
sounds, and gentle touch, helping her make sense of people
and her surroundings. Silent at first, she is learning to use her
voice and will bark and howl at sirens! Mira is a sweet and
playful doberpup, loving to run and chase bright bu erflies
in the yard. She is growing up quickly and being given the
care and rehabilita on she needs and deserves. We will be
accep ng applica ons to adopt this adorable special needs
youngster soon.
The “y” in why have we been able to help so many Dobermans
in need over the years is YOU! When you adopt one of our
hand-me-downs, you give a dog the loving, forever home it
deserves and we are able to bring another into rescue. When
you give a li le or a lot of your me to volunteer, you become
part of our team that keeps HMDD moving forward to help
dogs in need. When you open your heart and home to foster,
you are giving a dog a second chance to love and be loved.
Last, but certainly not least, when you generously donate to
HMDD, you enable us to con nue rescuing Dobermans like
Brook, Grace, Ana, and so many others, that desperately need
our help.
During this season of giving, please help us con nue to rescue
dogs regardless of age or medical condi on by dona ng
today. If we are Rescue Angels, please be an Angel of Hope
by providing the funds we need to con nue our mission to
rescue, rehabilitate, and place Dobes into loving, forever
homes. As always, we are truly grateful for your support!

Reflection
Every dog’s life is brief in comparison to our own, and sadly some are shorter than others.
A distinct and remarkable quality of the Dobe is it’s want and need to be part of the family
as a loyal, devoted companion. We pause to reflect on the beloved pets we lost this past year,
remembering their love and devotion during their time with us. Although gone, their paw prints
remain on our hearts forever.

LeƩer from the Board
2014 has been an interes ng and challenging year. Our devoted volunteers have worked relessly to come up with new fund
raising efforts. We can’t thank them enough for their efforts. Thanks to all our adopters. We hope your new addi on is a
constant source of joy and happiness. Several heartworm posi ve Dobes have been treated and the number of intakes with
mul ple veterinary needs con nues to rise. HMDD is in need of your financial support. We have a permanent foster (“Onyx”)
whose 4 1/2 years of care has cost in excess of $13,000.00. Our vet expenses average $50,000.00 per year. Even in these tough
economic mes, HMDD con nues its mission to save the neglected, abused and needy. Since our adop on fees don’t even
begin to cover the average costs of each Dobe we place, we can’t do our job without your monetary support. None of our
volunteers are paid. NO ONE in this selfless organiza on is compensated. Other than the costs of mailings and supplies, your
contribu on goes directly to support our Dobes. Please Donate NOW. Anything you can spare will be appreciated. Consider
sponsoring our “Onyx” with a monthly pledge or a one- me dona on. Everyone at HMDD hopes you have a wonderful year
full of happiness and joy. Please help HMDD achieve a happy year with your generous support .
