The Chief . . . Day 26
Building two-year-olds one individual at a time
“You have to change. Not many owners feel the same way about
the business as they did years ago. Now it’s a jockey business, everybody wants the same jockey, everybody wants the same trainer.
That’s why we have small fields. We have a lot of trainers with 100
horses, nobody used to have more than 35 horses. Changes. The
horse is not as tough as it used to be, that’s for sure. Maybe we
aren’t either.”

inated to the Seeking The Ante, which I won
last year, or one of the Finger Lakes stakes on
September 10. So we’ll decide where we’re
going with her.”
Gray is a common theme at Jim
Ryerson’s barn on the Oklahoma
Training Track. Gray horses, most
owned and bred by longtime Ryerson
supporter Patricia Generazio, fill the
stalls in the gray barn just off the midpoint of the turn on the Oklahoma.
One of those grays, Disco Partner, picked up the barn’s biggest
win of the meet last Saturday in the
$100,000 Troy Stakes. Generazio’s
homebred son of Disco Rico is one
of two winners for Ryerson from 15
starters through Wednesday.
“We were really pleased,” Ryerson, bucking the gray theme with a
royal blue sweater that matched his
barn sign, said last weekend. “We got
off to a terrible start and it picked up,
especially with that win Saturday. It
helps a lot.”
Ryerson took a few minutes away
from his afternoon chores last week
to talk about his Saratoga string with
The Special’s Shayna Tiller.
Taoiseach: Blue Sapphire Farm’s 3-yearold Dublin colt is a three-time winner who is
entered in Friday’s Albany Stakes. “He was
real good to us during the winter and he was
8
third in the New York Derby at Finger Lakes
last time. He’s enjoyed it here. My friend purchased him 15 or 16 months ago and got him
pretty cheaply ($4,000), and he’s definitely
worked out.”
Simplylucky: Generazio’s homebred Street
Boss filly, a 2-year-old, worked 5 furlongs in
1:02.38 on the Oklahoma Training Track Saturday, her first work in Saratoga. “We hope to
run her before the end of the meet. She trained
very well at Belmont. She breezed five-eighths
… in company and went real well. Kendrick
Carmouche worked her and she definitely
should start at the meet.”
Elite Heir: Generazio’s 2-year-old daugh-
ter of Wildcat Heir finished sixth in her debut
Aug. 12. “One of the grays we have here. She
started here in a 5 1/2-turf sprint, she got off
bad but she ran very well. She finished sixth
but beaten only (5 1/4 lengths) after breaking
poorly. Hopefully she’ll get another chance
here before we leave.”
Ransom Drop: Nirvana Stables’ Regal
Ransom filly, who cost $60,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-year-olds in training sale,
won debut at 26-1 going 6 furlongs on the dirt.
“She’s a New York-bred filly that we bought at
Timonium. We were lucky in the slop here to
win, there were four horses at the wire, but it
still counts and we’ll take it. She (was) nom-
Jennifer’s Legacy: WellSpring Stables’
homebred 3-year-old Sky Mesa filly alertly
looked out her window to greet the trainer
as he approached. “We added blinkers in her
last start and she finished second (in maiden claimer Aug. 15). She’s raced five times
… with her second in the last start being her
best. Maybe she’ll get another crack before we
leave.”
Discreet Image: Generazio’s homebred
2-year-old daughter of Discreet Cat is on the
also-eligible list for today’s third race, a 5
1/2-furlong maiden race state-breds. “Rained
out a couple weeks ago in a maiden New
York-bred filly race that got taken off the turf.
Her family’s been all turf. I trained all her half
(brothers and sisters). They all did good, Image Of Disco, Momma’s Mark, Image Of Noon
were all turf-only.”
She’s All Ready: A two-time Fasig-Tipton
graduate, the feminine chestnut with a thick,
speckled blaze finished seventh in an allowance-optional July 25. “Last year she was the
star of the show for us, won both of her starts
here including the Seeking The Ante on New
York-bred Day. She came back this year and
has been stakes placed. We raced her here
early on the turf and she just didn’t like it.
She’s a Girolamo filly that had a great 2-yearold year, started off very well this year and
kind of has tailed off. But she loves training
here and hopefully she’ll rebound to her prior
form.”
Wicked Freud: Tall, gray 4-year-old Freud
gelding pinned his ears and snapped at Ryerson as he walked past his stall. Generazio’s
The Saratoga Special
homebred, a maiden winner at Saratoga last
summer, finished seventh in an allowance-optional July 27. “Another Generazio gray. He
won at Belmont and was second at Belmont
prior to coming here. The heat kind of got to
him in his only start here. We’re hoping for
a little cooler weather with him. The distance
here, 5 1/2, is a little tough on him and the way
the weather’s been has led us to just keep him
in training now. I have a race the last weekend
for him so hopefully it will stay cool and we
can get him in.”
Disco Partner: Generazio’s homebred
4-year-old by Disco Rico pulled a mild upset
in Troy Stakes Aug. 20. “He always shows
up, he’s a nice little horse. The Jaipur was
of course his biggest race, where he almost
ran down Pure Sensation that day. He’s also
owned by the Generazios and trained by
Christophe Clement. He’s developed his own
turf style, he came into the game as a nice
solid dirt horse in New York-bred company,
but he really turned it around when he came
on the turf and became this one punch, late
running sprinter on the turf.”
Beyond The Green: Another homebred of
Generazio’s, has two consecutive fourths at
Belmont June 26 and July 22. “He won earlier in the year for us at Aqueduct, solid New
York-bred. Ran fourth early in the meet here
(July 22) in a two-other-than allowance for
New York-breds. Again, some of the distances
here are a little tough for him so we may run
him before we leave here or we might wait for
Belmont.”
Dark As Midnight: Midnight Lute colt
finished fourth in a maiden special weight at
Saratoga Aug. 11. “Another Generazio 3-yearold maiden who has been second, sixth and
fourth in three starts. There’s a race for him
before we leave here on Sept. 3. He’s trained

very well here, another horse that has had a
little trouble with the heat and has raced here.
Some of the afternoons have been very hot.”
Memories Of Peter:
New York-bred
4-year-old Disco Rico colt started twice in allowance-optional races at the meet – eighth
Aug. 8 and ninth Aug. 20. “Another gray Generazio turf horse. (In the Aug. 8 race) we were a
little disappointed. He got trapped down inside
and we’re hopeful that’s what he didn’t like.”
East Bay Lodge: Generazio’s homebred
5-year-old Flower Alley gelding finished seventh
in starter handicap at Monmouth Park Aug. 7
and is entered here Saturday. He’s won three of
25 starts, including allowance going 1 3/8 miles
here last summer. “Coming up for one of the
marathon races, a mile-and-three-eighths. He’s
been disappointing this year. He’s been at Belmont. He had a good year last year and we’re
trying to have him run back to some of those
races. It’s tough company (at Saratoga) but he’s
won here before so we’ll give it a chance.”

NEW YORK TURF WRITERS PREVIEW
Play 2
Bob Le Beau seeks
second G1 jump win
of meet for Voss barn
BY JOE CLANCY
At the end of the 2014 season, Irish-bred steeplechaser Bob Le Beau needed a break. He’d run
well once in four starts, a second in restricted stakes
company, but also finished a so-so sixth, lost his
jockey with a jumping mistake and pulled up.
Trainer Elizabeth Voss did the only thing she
knew, and kicked him out in a field for the winter at
her family’s Atlanta Hall Farm in Maryland. There,
Bob Le Beau met fellow turnout Tempt Me Alex
and has been flying ever since.
“After the first year I was like ‘what are we goContinued On Page 11

ing to do with him?’ because he really fell to pieces in the fall,” Voss said
Tuesday morning after watching her
horse put in some final work for today’s Grade 1 New York Turf Writers
Cup. “We turned him out for the winter with Alex, that’s where they got
together, and Bob is happier, he looks
better, he’s put on weight since then.
He’s different.”
Really different. He and Tempt Me
Alex – a 17-hand giant compared to
the leaner, slighter Bob Le Beau – pal
around at the farm and are neighbors
(with a window) in Voss’ barn at
the Oklahoma Annex. When novice
stakes winner Tempt Me Alex went
to race in Nashville this spring, Bob
Le Beau escaped from his stall to look
for his friend.
“He didn’t go anywhere,” said
Voss, “but we’d find him loose in the
barn.”
There’s been no escaping at Saratoga, but Bob and Alex are regular
turnout companions in the paddocks
at the Annex much like they are at
home. And you can’t argue with the
results.
Last year, Bob Le Beau won three
of five starts over jumps (all stakes),
earned $220,250 and was a finalist
for the steeplechase Eclipse Award.
This year, the Irish-bred didn’t run
over fences until Saratoga’s Grade 1
A.P. Smithwick Aug. 4 and put together a 1-length masterpiece at less
than even money. Today, he’s 6-5 on
the morning line for Voss, The Fields
Stable and jockey Jack Doyle in a field
of six. Bob Le Beau has won his last
three racetrack steeplechases – the
Grade 1 double of the Turf Writers
and the Lonesome Glory at Belmont
in 2015 and this year’s Smithwick. If
he wins today, he’ll be the first horse
to sweep both Saratoga Grade 1
stakes since Campanile in 1999.
With all the success comes a burgeoning reputation and a 162-pound
assignment from the handicapper.
The impost is four more than Bob Le
Beau carried in the Smithwick, and
between 12 and 20 more than the
others in today’s race. Last year, the
son of Big Bad Bob carried 140 in the
Turf Writers.

Turf Writers –

Though she knows it’s deserved, Voss frets over
the assignment and her horse’s ability to handle it.
“I worry about the weight, of course I do,” she
said. “I know he’s run well enough to deserve it,
but is it just going to go up? How much is too
much? I worry about him, not the race or the other
horses.”
Voss half hinted at not running, and even dug
through the history books to find some examples.
Turf Writers winners span all ends of the weight
spectrum – from Mistico’s 168 in 1994 to Mabou’s 138 in 2009. Bob Le Beau tries to become
the eighth winner to shoulder 160 or more, and
looks in ideal form to pull it off.
He won the Smithwick with little more than a
quarter-mile sprint to the finish and has flashed his
fitness since. Tuesday, he galloped 2 1/2 laps of the
Oklahoma infield with John’s Call third Renown
and fellow Turf Writers entrant Portrade. Bob Le
Beau started in the back, and ranged alongside Renown on the second trip through the stretch and
went past leader Portrade on the gallop out while
prompting a “Whoa Bob” from Voss.
“I just opened my hands a little bit to let him
have a go and then I had to be about slowing him

down,” said Doyle, also the horse’s regular morning rider. “He felt great.”
Voss loves the easy, light way her horse is training.
“For his first jump race of the year, it didn’t take
anything out of him,” she said of the Smithwick.
“He seems better, if anything, than he was before.”
Bob Le Beau will be tough to handle if he can
repeat the Smithwick effort, which showcased his
ability to relax early and flow into a spot to use his
speed in the final stages. Doyle saved ground, produced his horse and won comfortably in the end.
The 9-year-old comes by all that speed naturally.
He raced as a 2-year-old in 2009 and won six times
on the flat in Ireland for breeder Anamoine Limited and trainer Jessica Harrington. He started in
the 2012 Ebor Handicap at York Racecourse, and
made four starts on Tapeta in Dubai in 2013. He
converted to hurdling in Ireland, winning twice in
nine tries, and catching the eye of Voss’ husband
Gary Murray who bought the prospect for the Merck family’s The Fields Stable in the winter of 2014.
The favorite faces five rivals led by Smithwick
runner-up Scorpiancer. Another Irish-bred, he gets
12 pounds from the Bob Le Beau (two more than
last time). The 7-year-old has yet to win in 2016,
but has kept solid company with a second to divi-

sion leader Rawnaq in April, a fourth behind that

second in a $45,000 handicap at Fair Hill May 28
for Bruton Street-US and trainer Jack Fisher. Connor Hankin rides the 5-2 second choice and looks
forward to another crack at Bob Le Beau at 2 3/8
miles after coming up a length short at 2 1/16.
“Off the last race, if there was something you’d
like to see change it would be the weight and a little
more ground,” the jockey said. “We get those, so
we’ll see.”
Trained by Voss for The Fields, Portrade looks
like the understudy to Bob Le Beau but hung around
for third at 42-1 in the Smithwick. That was by
far the 7-year-old’s best American effort. Gus Dahl
takes the return call at 142 pounds and 9-2 on the
morning line.
Ten-year-old veteran Charminster was third in
last year’s Turf Writers and makes his third start
of 2016 after opening with a Grade 2 win (over
today’s rival Schoodic) May 7 and finishing second
to the same foe May 21. Trained by Cyril Murphy
for Irv Naylor, the Irish import leads the field with
seven wins over jumps. Ross Geraghty rides at 148
and 6-1.
Second in last year’s Turf Writers, Schoodic
looks to right his ship after finishing sixth in the
Smithwick for Fisher. Sean McDermott takes the
ride at 8-1 and 146 pounds. Andi’amu, fourth in
a $70,000 handicap here Aug. 3 and a winner at
Monmouth in June, breaks from the inside at 12-1
and 144 pounds. Paddy Young takes the call for his
wife Leslie.

On Leave makes stakes debut
in 5th start for Janney, McGaughey
BY ANNISE MONTPLAISIR
RISKAVERSE STAKES PREVIEW
Shug McGaughey believes a little
time never hurts.
McGaughey has taken his time
with Stuart Janney III’s On Leave, a
3-year-old daughter of War Front entered in today’s $100,000 Riskaverse
Stakes going 1 mile on the turf at
Saratoga Race Course.
On Leave ran second in her debut in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special
weight on the turf at Saratoga last
summer, finishing ahead of eventual
graded stakes winner Time And Motion. After a third in early October
at Belmont Park, McGaughey didn’t
race the filly for nearly eight months
over the winter and spring.
She returned to the races to break
her maiden going 1 1/16 miles on the
turf at Belmont June 9, and shortened
up to a mile to win an allowance-optional at Belmont July 17.
“Any time you can give them
On Leave streaks into today’s Riskaverse off two wins this year.
some time it doesn’t hurt, especially
between 2 and 3,” McGaughey said.
“She grew up some. I’m kind of taking my time with her a little bit now
because I think she could be even better next year. It would be nice to get
a couple things done with her now.
With her pedigree, if she could win a
NYRA Photo/Coglianese
stake she’d be worth a lot of money.”
If McGaughey had his way, the
Riskaverse would be a bit longer to
accommodate On Leave’s late-closing
style, but he believes she’ll be competitive in the stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Riskaverse –
Continued from page 14
“If I had my druthers maybe I wish
it was a little farther than a mile, but
that’s fine,” McGaughey said. “She’ll
put herself in the race to where we
want her to be and I think she’ll be
tough.”
Straightforward and easy to train,
On Leave has improved in physical
appearance and strength since last
year, and even since her arrival in
Saratoga. She’s breezed three times on
the Oklahoma dirt track, including a
half-mile in :49.11 Saturday.
“She’s done really well up here,”
McGaughey said, looking out at the
Oklahoma Training Track from his
barn. “Her breezes have all been
good. She’s easy, very easy, kind of
laid-back at what she does. She likes
to train and she’s getting better and
better, she’s carrying a little bit more
weight now than she used to. Training over this training track, I think
she likes that. Her breeze the other
day was excellent.”
Todd Pletcher sends out Michael
Tabor’s Thrilled, a veteran of multiple
surfaces in her eight-race career.
A daughter of Uncle Mo, Thrilled
started her career on the grass and
runner-up finishes in the P. G. Johnson at Saratoga and Grade 3 Miss
Grillo at Belmont earned her a spot
in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies
Turf at Keeneland. She’s raced on dirt
three times and synthetic once in four
starts since.
“We’re just looking for the right
spot to come back,” Pletcher said of
the Riskaverse, walking back to his
barn after turf works Monday. “Figured it was time to get her back on
the turf and figure out what exactly
her preferred surface is, so we’ll find
out.”
Thrilled won her debut going 1
1/16 miles at Saratoga last summer,
then came back and finished 4 lengths
behind eventual Grade 1 winner Harmonize in the P. G. Johnson Stakes at
the same distance.
“She trained well on the dirt,”
Pletcher said, discussing the move
from turf to dirt. “She won on the
grass and was second in a stake, so
she’d performed pretty well on the
grass. After training her this winter
we felt like she liked the dirt and she
won a stake on the dirt. I think she’s

pretty solid on any surface.”
Thrilled won the Plum Pretty
Stakes on the dirt at Sunland Park
March 20 before running third over
the synthetic in the Grade 3 Selene
Stakes at Woodbine May 15. Her
last start was an off-the-board finish
in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks at Prairie
Meadows June 30.
Chad Brown, the meet’s leading
trainer with 31 wins through Wednesay, sends out the trio of 3-1 favorite
Pricedtoperfection, Island Reward
and She Doesn’t Mind.
Others in the field include Truth,
a maiden winner going 1 1/16 miles
July 24 for Jimmy Jerkens, Marquee
Miss, Enjoy Yourself, Baciami Piccola and Sky My Sky. Stella Rose is on
the also-eligible list and Lost Raven,
Linda Mimi and Always Thinking are
entered for main track only.

JOHN’S CALL STAKES RECAP
No Doubts
Freshened Mr Maybe
delivers for Brown
in marathon turf test
BY TOM LAW
Mr Maybe needed a change of scenery, away
from the day-to-day grind of the racetrack. He also
needed help getting over a respiratory issue that
surfaced after the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes in
early July at Monmouth Park.
The 5-year-old Ghostzapper gelding got both in
the form of a nearly month-long stay at Bruce Jackson’s Fair Hill Equine Therapy Center in Maryland.
Mr Maybe’s stay included plenty of turnout in
grassy paddocks, plus visits to a hyperbaric chamber and salt vapor room to help heal his lung infection. He also trained on Fair’s Hill Tapeta Footings

Mr Maybe stays clear late in Wednesday’s John’s Call, a milestone victory for trainer Chad Brown.

synthetic surface. All that, plus some fine
tuning once he got back to trainer Chad
Brown’s barn at Saratoga Race Course,
paid off as Mr Maybe won Wednesday’s
$100,000 John’s Call Stakes. Mr Maybe won the 13-furlong John’s Call by 2
1/4 lengths for his second stakes win and
Brown’s 1,000th career victory.
Brown, the meet’s leading trainer with
31 wins and firing at a 31-percent clip,
was quick to credit Jackson and his team
for his latest score.
“Bruce fixed the horse,” Brown said as
he walked from the paddock to the clubhouse after saddling Stella Street in the
nightcap. “He used his experience, his
program, got this horse’s lungs cleaned
up, breezed him and sent him back to me
. . . Without Bruce’s help there’s no way
we would have won.”
Mr Maybe, who races for Michael
Dubb, Head of Plains Partners, Highclere
America and Bethlehem Stables, finished
seventh in the United Nations as the 4-1
second choice. A respiratory issue was
detected after the race and Brown sent
him directly to Fair Hill Equine, a facili-
ty he started using recently on the advice
of bloodstock agent Brad Weisbord, who
also negotiated the private purchase of
Mr Maybe last fall.
Jackson characterized the respiratory issue as moderate when Mr Maybe
showed up.
“He was in great shape apart from
that,” said Jackson, on hand for Mr
Maybe’s win Wednesday. “We were
able to identify that and give him a little
break while we worked on that. We were
able to utilize a lot of the tools we have
to address those issues, but bottom line
was we gave him a break, got him turned
out, let him be a horse for a little while
and he responded very well.”
Jackson said the time outside, and
in an airy stall when Mr Maybe needed
to be inside, were critical to the healing
process.
Mr Maybe responded well to treatment and Jackson’s riders also breezed
the gelding twice, both times a half-mile.
The first work was July 23, just 20 days
after the United Nations, and the second
was Aug. 3.
“We have various tools there to help
with respiratory issues, hyperbaric being
one of them, and our dry salt room is

a big part of that as well,” Jackson
said. “Equally, just stabling a horse in
a stall where he can get as much air
flow as possible when he’s inside and
when he can be, let him be outside
and turned out in a paddock as much
as possible.
“We like to see those horses out as
much as we can. It’s good to get them
a break, a little change from the racetrack, mentally it does them a world
of good as well. He just needed a little
time, a little R&R and TLC. When we
felt he was ready for it we picked up
his training, breezed him a few times
and when everything seemed to be in
order we sent him back to Chad.”
Brown breezed Mr Maybe twice
– half-miles Aug. 12 and Aug. 18 on
the Oklahoma Training Track dirt
course – to prep for the John’s Call.
Mr Maybe was bet down to 7-10
against his seven opponents that remained in the John’s Call following
the morning scratches of Set To Music, Swear By It and Street Fashion.
My Afleet and jockey Jose Lezcano were intent on the lead from the
start and set a strong pace, clicking
off early splits of :24.86, :49.78 and
1:14.55 just ahead of the tracking
Procurement and Moss Code racing
as a tandem with the pair of Mr Maybe and Biedermeier right behind.

Trainer Chad Brown – man of 1,000 wins.
Irad Ortiz Jr. kept Mr Maybe in
fifth up the backstretch the second
time as My Afleet went past the mile
split in 1:39.42. Ortiz switched Mr
Maybe to the outside as the field
started its run around the final turn,
passing Biedermeier and Moss Code
at about the midpoint of the bend.
Procurement offered little resistance
when confronted by Mr Maybe at the
quarter pole. My Afleet spurted clear
off the turn, but never looked like a
winner with Mr Maybe in gear to the
outside approaching the final furlong.
Mr Maybe drifted out a bit as he
rolled past My Afleet in the stretch,
but corrected himself with a couple
right-handed cracks of Ortiz’s whip
in deep stretch. Mr Maybe won in
2:39.21, second fastest of the 12 editions run on the turf and only slower
than the 2:38.55 posted by Harrods
Creek in 2012. My Afleet held well
to be second, a half-length in front of
the late-running Renown with Procurement fourth.
Brown took over Mr Maybe’s
training last fall after Weisbord negotiated the private purchase from Cash
Is King Stable. An $85,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale purchase in 2012, the Kentucky-bred
made two starts at Saratoga last summer for trainer Butch Reid, finishing
fourth in starter-allowance races, before winning an allowance race in late
August at Parx prior to the sale.
Brown stretched Mr Maybe out
for his first start in mid-October at
Belmont and the gray gelding won
by 4 lengths going 11 furlongs on
the grass. He added the Grade 3 Red
Smith in his next race and final start
of 2015. Overall, Mr Maybe accounts
for three of Brown’s 1,000 wins.
“To have 1,000 wins and to have it
happen right here at Saratoga is priceless for me,” Brown said. “I worked
hard toward it. I’ve been lucky all
along the way to learn from some really great horsemen. I’ve always tried
to surround myself with people who
knew what they were doing. Luckily,
I have a wonderful staff around me.
I’m a lucky guy.”

SARATOGA STAKES RECAP
Speedy
Filly
New York-bred Ingrid
impresses in debut romp
The starting gate opened for the fifth race
Wednesday at Saratoga Race Course and like a
black cat with its tail on fire, Ingrid flew to the front
of the field. She quickly put daylight between herself and her six opponents, rattled off quick fractions of :21.86 and :45.03 and rolled off the turn
well in front.
Ingrid and jockey Chris DeCarlo stayed there
and finished 6 lengths in of front runner-up She’s
My Ghibli in the maiden race for 2-year-old New
York-bred fillies.
“Speed is her weapon,” DeCarlo said as he
walked out of the jocks’ room after his lone mount
of the day.
DeCarlo knew Ingrid’s ability and speed; he’d
ridden the filly for trainer Mike Hushion in the
mornings prior to the race. He wasn’t surprised a
bit that the daughter of Gemologist was that quick.
“She’s been working fast all along,” said DeCarlo, who won his first race of the meet. “In fact if
anything, we’ve been trying to slow her down a little bit. I’ve been on her at least four or five times (in
the mornings) so I got to know her ahead of time
which is always a plus.
“In the morning you’re trying to teach them
more than let them run. She has a lot of natural
speed and natural ability, but they can do that in
the morning and not show up in the afternoon.
We knew she was going to be fast and show speed,
and it worked out where she broke sharp and went
about her business.”
Hushion, who trains the filly for Black Swan Stable, got the performance he expected.
“Believe it or not, exactly what happened,”
Hushion said of his expectations. “I knew she was
extremely fast and would open up and had some
talent. We weren’t positive what would happen the
last eighth, but she had enough momentum to carry
it.”
Ingrid won the 5 1/2-furlong race on the fast
main track in 1:04.22.
“When you take a closer look at that you’ll see
the rider is just sitting there,” Hushion said, motioning at the replay about to flash up on the infield
big screen.

Ingrid runs away with Wednesday’s fifth race for Black Swan Stable and trainer Mike Hushion.

• With his 10-year-old daughter’s hand intertwined in his own, John Terranova posed alongside
Greywalls with his wife Tonja, celebrating the gray
filly’s victory in the seventh.
The Saratoga winner’s circle is familiar territory to Long Lake Stable’s 4-year-old City Zip filly,
who won an allowance-optional during the 2015
meet followed by a fifth in the Riskaverse Stakes.
Wednesday, she was part of an eight-horses field in
a 1-mile turf race for $40,000 claimers and scored
by a head over Emerald Pond after breaking sharply and racing up close throughout for jockey Ricardo Santana Jr.
“She certainly likes it up here,” John Terranova said. “She excels a bit up here. But then again,
I think we were in the right spot today. Certainly
she’s run some of her better races at Saratoga.”
Greywalls’ win, the fourth of the meet for the
Terranova stable from 19 starters, was the fourth
of her career and pushed her above $200,000 in
lifetime earnings.
“So far so good, ups and downs as always,” the
trainer said of his 2016 season. “We’ve got a small

“Giana won’t let him leave,”
Tonja joked as she watched the father-daughter duo stand together for

• Trainer Dominick Schettino had
his hands full in the paddock with
Frosty Lady before the finale.
The 5-year-old Frost Giant mare
circled around her ring quietly enough
after she arrived, but got amped up
after getting tacked up. On her toes,
she dragged her handlers around the
walking ring, threatening to take off
as they saddled her on the go. She
calmed once in the hands of an outrider.
“Once the pony got to her, she settled a little bit, but that’s her makeup,
her nature,” Schettino said. “She’s a
little bit on the over-aggressive side,
but we deal with it. You work with
her.”
Frosty Lady’s aggressive side
showed on the track. She broke on
top in the 1-mile turf claimer and
put up a strong opening fraction of
:23.83 before rating a half in :48.01.
She came down the stretch on her left
lead but still had plenty in reserve to
win by 3 lengths from Rosedale Arch.
Frosty Lady made a belated career debut as a 4-year-old for owner/
breeder Joemar Racing Stable and
trainer Luis Farfan-Casarez, finishing
fifth last August in a maiden claimer
at Monmouth Park. She finished third
in her second start at Belmont Park in
October in her only other start before
being transferred to Schettino.
Since coming to Schettino in the
spring she’s 2-for-2, with a maiden
win at Saratoga July 25 and Wednesday’s score.
“I picked her up in April this year
and she showed us that she had ability
in the morning, Schettino said. “She
can be a little on the nervous side, so
we try to work with her on that, but
otherwise everything else you ask her
to do she’s done correctly so far and it
shows in her first two races.”
Frosty Lady has provided both of
Schettino’s victories at the meeting.
He’s also collected two runner-ups
and three thirds from 17 starts.
“The horses have been running
very well,” he said. “We had a couple
of tough breaks, a lot of horses not
getting the luck of the break out of
the gate, cost us maybe a couple of
races, but I’m happy because they’re
all running so well.”

BY JOE CLANCY
Thirty feet in the air on a lift fixing a gutter on
the barn, Jack Fisher heard Connor Hankin call out,
“Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?”
The trainer looked down and said, “Why, what’s
going on?” It could have been anything, really. A
loose shoe on a horse, some broken tack, a stuck
tractor, Roscoe the donkey was lost, maybe Hankin
had an exam to study for and would have to miss
the next week’s jump races. But Fisher had a gutter
to fix.
“You might want to come down from the lift for
this,” Hankin said.
Fisher lowered to the ground, and Hankin – a
University of Virginia senior with a double major
in history and economics and part-time steeplechase
jockey – delivered the news. He had enrolled in
the United States Marine Corps’ officer candidate
school and would soon give up riding races in favor
of serving his country.
Fisher the horse trainer was flabbergasted. Fisher
the person, not so much.
“My first reaction was, ‘Are you kidding me?’ ”
he said. “My second reaction was that’s going to
make him a better person and he’s a pretty good
person already. For the rest of us, thank God we
have people like Connor Hankin in the military.”
Hankin, 22, rides what could be the final jump
races of his life this week at Saratoga. He finished
second aboard All For Us Wednesday and rides
Scorpiancer in the Grade 1 New York Turf Writers Cup today. He’s won nine races this year, two
behind Jack Doyle in the National Steeplechase Association standings and is the rare American-born
steeplechase jockey in an increasingly Irish/English
colony.
And the racing-crazy Marylander will give it up
to be a Marine. He starts the 10-week Officer Candidate School program Sept. 10 in Quantico, Va.
and he’ll be commissioned as a second lieutenant.
Then it’s basic training, more preparation and an
assignment with a platoon for two years where he
will be in charge of between 12 and 80 Marines almost anywhere in the world.
Hankin’s firm handshake, fitness and look-youin-the-eye conversation skills have been there for
years, but the idea of joining the military took root
last summer. He interned with a private-equity firm
in Washington, D.C., saw himself in the corporate
world after graduation and blinked. That’s the professional world of Hankin’s father Michael, the
CEO of the Baltimore-based Brown Advisory and
not necessarily Connor.
“Not that I didn’t enjoy that, but it really made
me realize I wanted to do
something else,” he said.
“And that something else
was some form of military
service. It was a way to
serve my country, make a
difference and do something meaningful.”
Hankin’s grandfather was in the Navy briefly,
and a close family friend was a colonel in the Army,
but otherwise there’s no strong military connection
other than admiration.
“I’ve idolized military members for a long time
and I thought about a service academy, more to myself, coming out of high school,” Hankin said. “I
would talk a lot with my dad and he said it was one
thing he regretted not doing. It would be one thing
I would regret not doing if I decided not to do it.”
So he’s doing it. Like Fisher, most people were
floored by the news. Then they were proud.
“Everyone is very excited but very nervous too
and continue to be,” Hankin said. “My parents
were extremely, extremely proud. Everyone’s been
really supportive, my entire extended family is very
excited. It’s been a completely positive reaction that
I’ve gotten, which has helped.”

Fisher loses a jockey and Hankin loses a promising career, but being a jump jockey in the United
States is not the full-time, potentially lucrative job it
is in England or Ireland, nor is it comparable to the
life of an American flat jockey. Jump jockeys hold
down other jobs – exercising horses, training on the
side, whatever – and careers rarely last longer than
10 years. With his college degree and background,
Hankin was always going to do something else.
“We’ve had conversations in the past where I said
that you don’t want to do this for your livelihood,”
Fisher said. “But my plan was he was going to go
into the financial world and make a lot of money
and then support me with some horses to train.”
Not that Hankin considered riding races a hobby. He was 11 when his family’s Bug River won the
Maryland Hunt Cup and helped ignite the idea.
Then came a pony named Scooby Do, pony races,
point-to-points, galloping racehorses, riding in the
Hunt Cup, getting on horses for Fisher and a spot
in the top five. He’s won 19 NSA races in his life, 15
in the last two years without riding full-time until
this year.
Racing became his “fifth class” at school and, in
part because of the looming career choice, he dove
in further this spring. He kept an Equiciser and a
horse at school, came home every weekend to get on
horses, rode races and was as busy as any jockey on
the circuit from March through May.
“We set out to have a great spring and do it the
way we’ve done it,” Hankin said, “but nothing
about the way the spring went was going to change
my decision. If anything, being successful has made
it more difficult. It makes leaving it behind a little
bit harder.”
He says he’s only had one “oh crap” moment, in
early May after a busy weekend of riding races on
back-to-back days, but then he moved on.
After today, he moves on again and – as even
Fisher will admit – we’re all better for it.

“He’s the last one. The last good Flying Zee
horse.”
That’s how Phil Serpe described Weekend Hideaway, winner of a Monday allowance race. It was
said in passing, as Serpe walked toward his barn
and my golf cart went wherever it was going. Looking back on it, I don’t know if it was before or after
the 6-year-old son of Speightstown earned his 11th
victory in a tough New York-bred allowance Monday, pushing his earnings to over $800,000.
A 20-year resident in the long barn with the
wispy flowers near the half-mile pole of the main
track, Serpe appreciates Weekend Hideaway’s talent
and respects his heritage.
When he wins, hell, whenever he sees the horse,
Serpe thinks about his client, his friend, Carl Lizza,
who died in 2011.
Introduced by Bob Frieze, Jerry Bailey’s agent,
Serpe and Lizza met in Florida. They hit it off. Lizza
sent some horses to Serpe. They weren’t much.
“The horses he first sent me, they had to do a
relay race to win a race,” Serpe said.
While Serpe was training for Flying Zee, Lizza
went into the hospital because of complications
from diabetes. He had been in the New Jersey hospital for two months when he called Serpe and
asked him to come see him.
“I’m thinking, ‘This is it, this guy’s going to
get rid of all his horses,’ ” Serpe said. “It was the
damnedest thing, Carl’s lying there, about to lose
his leg and he says, ‘I’d like to make the stable better, get rid of a lot of bad horses, start to breed to
some outside horses.’ I said this guy loves racing
more than anybody I’ve ever met in my life.”
Serpe and his assistant/girlfriend Lisa Bartkowski
went to Office Max and bought binders, you know
the ones, six inches thick with metal rings. They
filled three of them with Flying Zee horses – older horses, 2-year-olds, yearlings, weanlings, mares.
They weren’t much either.
Susie Raisher
Weekend Hideaway.
“That’s no overnight plan, we moved like 300
horses, he had a lot of not-so-great horses,” Serpe
said. “When we got things moving, Flying Zee won
a lot of races, they won 13 owner titles including
one at Saratoga, I remember closing day, the guy’s
kissing me.”
A force in the early 1980s with champion Wayward Lass and Marlboro Cup winner Noble Nashua, Flying Zee had returned to the top when Lizza
went into the hospital for hernia surgery and died
in his sleep the next night, before the 2011 Saratoga
meet. Flying Zee was leading owner in New York
at the time. With Lizza’s wife, Viane, at the helm
Flying Zee stayed there to lead all owners in 2011.
“He was a tough guy, don’t get me wrong, he
was tough in business, he expected results and he let
you know if he wasn’t happy about something. But
he was a very fair guy, very dedicated to the people who worked for him. Underneath all the gruff,
he was a good guy,” Serpe said. “I don’t miss him
getting mad at me but I do miss him as part of my
life, it lasted quite a while, not as long as Carlos
(Martin), but there were a lot of good things that
came out of it.”
One was a chestnut colt by Speightstown, who
went through the ring as part of the Flying Zee dispersal in 2011. Serpe and Bartkowski convinced
Mike Hoffman’s Red & Black Stable to put up
$40,000 for the New York-bred.
“He’s the last one,” Serpe said again days after
Weekend Hideaway won. “The last good Flying
Zee horse.”
On a breezy Wednesday morning, Serpe sat in his
high director’s chair along the white board fence by
the horsepath. Owner Adam Newman walked his
dog, trainer Mark Casse scurried past talking on his
cell phone, a couple of adopted stray cats roamed
the edges of the barn, Laird George rode a jumper off the gap, Simon Harris, Eddie King and Kelly
Wheeler glided past – all going different directions
but the same direction.
With two wins at the meet, Serpe, leaned back in
his chair, feet propped up on the middle board and
looked around. A conversation that started with
Carl Lizza had touched on Allen Jerkens, Spectacular Bid, Hialeah and had come back around to life.
“When you’re a teenager nothing matters, when
you’re in your 20s, stuff matters but you blow it off,
as you get older, everything becomes a crisis,” Serpe
said. “It’s not really a crisis, you just take things
more seriously, that’s all. They say don’t take yourself too serious, but I guess it’s just part of it.”
Serpe took a long deep breath, looked across the
racetrack and thought about the great passage of
time.
“I always look over there,” Serpe said, pointing
to the trees lining the clubhouse turn. “Sometimes
it’s early and sometimes it’s late, but I’ll look over
there and one of them starts to turn red and it makes
me sad. I love this place. It’s just the best place.”
