President’s Corner
HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome to 2013!
This is my last newsletter article and I would like to start by thanking the members of the Association and the
Board of Directors for the opportunity to work with everyone this past year.
How about you, did you get everything on your to do list done last year? Me neither but I am ready for 2013
and am ready to go. With that said, I leave you with an excellent group of individuals willing to work to move
the Association and all of its members forward. I can tell you that the Board will be asking for more input,
more feedback, and more suggestions from you. Take a minute and answer the call. Here are a couple of ideas
that are under consideration:
*Health care discussion to provide facts and perhaps suggestions. (Thank a member for this idea.)
*Survey of what business should come to town, a workshop to identify obstacles, and then a working
session to recruit these businesses to come join us.
Malta is moving ahead, Malta is growing, and Malta is the place to be in 2013 and beyond. Join the effort to
move the Association in the right direction. Tell your customers, your neighbors, tell everybody that we want
input and conversation.
Please allow me to introduce Steven Gottmann as the new President of the Association. Steve is a resident of
Malta, has been active with the Association, and has taken the time to learn the issues and positions of the town
leaders. I truly believe Steve and the Board will do a great job going forward. Join me on January 9th at our
next breakfast or January 23th at the Annual Dinner to meet Steve and the new members of the Board. Share
your thoughts and concerns and tell them what you can do to help them help all of us.
Again, it has been a pleasure serving as a Board member and President and I hope to see you at a function soon.

The MBPA Board is pleased to welcome three new members to the 2013 MBPA Board: Karen McGowan, Bruce
McClellan and Zuzana Kaplan. While elections are finished for this year, we will continue to seek individuals who
are interested in filling 2014 seats as current board positions
expire. We are looking for individuals who are motivated
to find ways to help the association serve its members better and who want to work with a dedicated team to further
develop the MBPA within the Malta Community.

We have an exciting year coming up for the Malta Business & Professional Association. The local/regional growth continues to be strong
so it is more important that we, as the local business community, help set the agenda that promotes this growth.
As an association we have many opportunities to assist our members and the business community as the “voice of business”. In order to
do that most effectively, we need your thoughts and input! What would you like? What would you like to see your business doing by the
end of 2013? What can we, as the MBPA do to assist you in achieving your business goals?
We invite and encourage you to use the MBPA website, and particularly, the Member Forums to share your ideas, concerns and hear
from other MBPA members. We also have an “open” LinkedIn group where any LinkedIn subscriber can post and read the Malta BPA
Group pages and posts.
There are several meetings and programming changes coming the new year. Watch for them in this and subsequent newsletters and website posts! Remember, we welcome your thoughts and ideas about how we can best support you and your business. Be sure to talk with
Ray Patterson about any ideas or questions you have regarding how the MBPA website could assist you!

ANNOUNCE NEW BUSINESS AFFILIATION
NEW HORIZONS PRESENTS IPADS
TO KINDERGARTENERS
On Wednesday, December 19, the Orenda Elementary
School in the Shenendahowa School District celebrated the donation of 22 iPads to a kindergarten class
with a ceremony in which the iPads were presented to
the students. The iPads were donated by New Horizons of Albany, a local computer training company. New Horizons owner Jason Krolak went to the
Orenda School to present the iPads at a special event
the school held to celebrate the donation. Mr. Krolak,
also the father of a student at the Orenda School, hopes
that introducing children to computers at an early age
will help to foster a lifelong appreciation for technology that will help the children throughout their lives.
The teachers of the class are already eager to start implementing the iPads in the classroom, by using apps
that are designed to help children learn basic math and
reading skills, as well as how to write. In addition enabling new types of learning in the classroom, the
teachers say the iPads will help making learning fun
for the children. The teachers know that when children are having fun learning, they retain more information, and develop an eagerness to learn, something
that benefits them their entire lives.
The Shenendahowa Central School District hopes that
Mr. Krolak’s donation will help to inspire others in the
area to take a similar interest in our children’s education, and serve as a model for future donations. The
school district recognizes the importance of having
parents involved in the learning process, and hopes to
see more parents take up an active role in their children’s education.
New Horizons would like to thank Veronica Huang, of

to take photos of the presentation ceremony.

ADIRONDACK TRUST COMPANY COMMUNITY FUND
ANNOUNCES 2012 GRANT RECIPIENTS
Saratoga Springs, New York...The Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund recently announced that the Advisory
Committee has awarded grants to eight, local, nonprofit organizations. The grants, which totaled $12,300, were handed out
at the Community Fund’s annual grant award reception. The name of each organization and a brief description of how they
will use the funds are listed below. Directors or representatives of each organization were present at the reception and spoke
about their respective organization’s mission and how the grant will support this mission.
Grant awards were provided to:
1. Adirondack Samaritan Counseling Center - to expand the program’s reach by supporting satellite clinics that provide
professional counseling and educational services for individuals and families for the uninsured.
2. After the Fire, Inc. – to provide immediate assistance to families in Saratoga County who suffer loss due to fire
3. Agricultural Stewardship Association - to expand Farm Photography for Kids program which promotes awareness of
the value of saving the area’s agricultural land by teaching children the fundamentals of photography with local farms as
their subject.
4. Regional Food Bank of Northeastern N.Y. - to offset Saratoga County transportation expenses in getting food to local
food banks in need.
5. Saratoga Film Forum – will establish a program “In the Public Interest,” a movie night which will show “hot topic”
films with moderated after movie discussions.
6. Saratoga Sponsor A Scholar –– to purchase graphing calculators for students enrolled in the program, which helps economically disadvantaged young scholars complete high school and attend college.
7. Shelters of Saratoga – to help support the stay of homeless individuals.
8. Saratoga Salvation Army - to underwrite the cost of food for the youth after-school program which provides educational, health and character building programs.
Speaking on behalf of the ATCCF Advisory Committee, volunteer Chairperson, Joan Taylor, noted: “In just our second year
of awarding grants from The General [Community] Fund, we have seen the positive impact in our community. Thanks to the
generosity of individuals and businesses who have donated to the Fund over the past two years, seventeen local nonprofits
serving Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties have received over $23,000 in grants. Sponsoring an array of charitable
initiatives in various areas, such as arts, agriculture, education, health, and human services, has ensured the Fund’s effects
are felt throughout different segments of our community. Going forward, by increasing public awareness and philanthropic
support, we aim to continue growing the Fund’s assets to a level that can provide enduring sustenance for our local nonprofits and their critical work.”
The Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund
("The Community Fund") was established in 2009 to
serve as a perpetual source of philanthropic support for
the needs of local charities. The Fund is an independent 501(c) (3) charitable organization. The Adirondack
Trust Company serves as the Trustee and Administrator of The Community Fund with the guidance of an
Independent Advisory Committee, comprised of individuals from the community. The Community Fund’s

LOCAL FINANCIAL REPRESENTATIVES RECEIVE
NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD
Joseph Anderson, a Financial Representative of Northwestern Mutual, in Saratoga Springs New York,
has qualified for the NAIFA Quality Award from the National Association of Insurance and Financial
Advisors (NAIFA). The NAIFA Quality Award recognizes professionalism through education and
earned designations, production measured by performance metrics customized for each practice specialty, adherence to the NAIFA Code of Ethics, and service to the industry association. This is the 3rd time
he has earned this honor which recognizes Financial Representatives for their competence and dedication to the insurance industry and their clients.
Anderson has been associated with Northwestern Mutual since 2008. As Financial Advisor, he
provides expert guidance and innovative solutions for a variety of financial needs and goals for his clients locally and nationally.
A native of Charlton New York, Anderson received a Bachelor of Applied Economics and Management degree and a Bachelor of Animal Science degree from Cornell University.
Charles Martin, a Financial Representative of Northwestern Mutual, in Saratoga Springs New York,

his clients locally and nationally.
A native of Whitesboro, New York, Martin received a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarkson University. He also received an Associate’s degree in from Mohawk Valley Community College.

ALLEGIANCE BOWL COMMITTEE PRESENTS CHECK TO
SARATOGA-WILTON SOCCER CLUB AND BALLSTON SPA POP WARNER
FOR $10,000
The Allegiance Bowl Committee Inc. recently presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to the Saratoga-Wilton
Soccer Club and Ballston Spa Pop Warner Football & Cheerleading programs. This check represents the net proceeds from the eighth annual Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl featuring sprint football teams from Army and
Post University.
“We are extremely pleased that the community turned out to support this charity event and its beneficiaries,
Saratoga-Wilton Soccer Club and Ballston Spa Pop Warner football and cheerleading,” said Scott Perkins, Allegiance Bowl Committee Chair.
The Allegiance Bowl is made possible by the continuous support of the organizing committee and its primary
sponsors: The Adirondack Trust Company, The Saratogian and Star Radio 101.3. The game took place at the Saratoga Springs High School football field. Former Saratoga Springs High School, University of Notre Dame, and NFL
star Anthony Weaver was the event’s Honorary Chair. To date, the Allegiance Bowl has raised over $60,000 for
youth athletic programs in the greater Saratoga Springs area.
