On Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the Criminal Code of Canada prohibition on assisted suicide and gave the federal government one year to draft a new law. It is urgent that we as Catholics show we support new legislation and urge the government to obtain sufficient time by invoking the notwithstanding clause. With a federal election this fall, one year is not enough time to draft effective legislation. Help us call on the federal government to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause now to give Parliament more than one year. Please visit giveustime.ca to download and sign the postcard to urge the Federal government to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause so Parliament can draft effective assisted suicide legislation. 4th Week of Lent This Sunday is named Laetare Sunday for a number of reasons. The Church wants us to know that Lent is almost over and the Easter victory is “oh so close”. This should encourage us to persevere in our Lenten penances, our sacrifices for the Lord and each other. At the same time as we are offering these it is important to remember that there is no opposition between penance and joy. In fact if our penances, our mortifications are “true” then they should in fact increase our joy and authentic happiness. The Church helps to remind us of this theological truth by way of flowers being permitted in the sanctuary during the Masses (on this Sunday) and the priest being allowed to wear rose vestments – symbolizing joy. This joy is a lasting reality because as St. Paul reminds us” “the Lord is near”. And when Jesus is near we can never be truly sad. Can you imagine our Lady every being sad? Can you imagine the apostles with all of their weaknesses and failings ever been sad around Jesus? No! So let us truly remember that the Lord is near; Easter Sunday is not far away and Jesus wants us to possess true joy in our lives. I’m very pleased to announce that, following a thorough selection process, Corpus Christi has taken a very positive step in our commitment to Infrastructure Renewal and has hired Esther Jang as Capital Campaign Director. Esther will take up work of KCI (the consulting firm we hired to develop our Capital Campaign Plan) and take it to the next level. Esther joins us with close to 20 years of successively senior roles in the not-for-profit and for-profits sectors. Esther has a proven track record of implementing successful fundraising programs, developing communication, community engagement and marketing programs. While working at the University of British Columbia, she was instrumental in developing the strategy and fundraising to support the completion of the Faculty of Science’s innovative $7.4M fin fish research facility. Over the years as a fundraiser, Esther has raised significant funds and has had the opportunity to work with senior volunteer committees, develop successful annual campaigns and create successful strategic plans. Active in her community, Esther has volunteered for many not-for profit organizations, and is a passionate supporter of Catholic education. Her husband's family connection to the Catholic school system spans over 50 years and most recently, Esther has volunteered and built community through her association with Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary and Little Flower Academy and Vancouver College Secondary Schools. She brings knowledge and expertise to her role at Corpus Christi through her background which includes a BComm and Certificate in International Development from the University of British Columbia and a Certified Fund Raising Executive, CFRE professional designation. Esther is a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help here in the city of Vancouver. I ask everyone to welcome Esther as she brings this important role at Corpus Christi. I also ask you to pray – everyday – that God continues to bless this Campaign which will result in the building of a new school. You will be able to meet Esther and hear an update on the Capital Campaign at the Information Meeting on Thursday, March 26th from 6:00pm-7:00pm. PLEASE MARK YOU CALENDAR AND PLAN TO ATTEND. More details about this meeting coming soon. Esther’s hiring is the result of a great deal of hard work, commitment and even more prayer (especially to Blessed Don Alvaro – the successor to St. Josemaria) by many individuals, and I would like to thank all those who helped in the process. Let us pray for one another as we strive to be every more united to Jesus Christ –our victorious King. United in Prayer F r. Prayer of Laborers O Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in the spirit of penance in expiation of my many sins; to work conscientiously by placing love of duty above my inclinations; to gratefully and joyously deem it an honor to employ and to develop by labor the gifts I have received from God, to work methodically, peacefully, and in moderation and patience, without ever shrinking from it through weariness or difficulty to work; above all, with purity of intention and unselfishness, having unceasingly before my eyes death and the account I have to render of time lost, talents unused, good not done, and vain complacency in success, so baneful to the work of God. All for Jesus, all for Mary, all to imitate thee, O Patriarch St. Joseph! This shall be my motto for life and eternity. Amen. Prayer to St. Joseph, as Patron of Workers Blessed St. Joseph, patron of all working people, obtain for me the grace to labor in a spirit of penance for the atonement o f my many sins. Help me to be conscientious in my work so that I may give as full a measure as I have received. May I labor in a spirit of thankfulness and joy, ever mindful of all the gifts I have received from God that enable me to perform these tasks. Permit me to work in peace, patience, and moderation, keeping in mind the account I must one day give of time lost, talents unused, good omitted, and vanity of success, so fatal to the work of God. Glorious St. Joseph, may my labors be all for Jesus, all through Mary, and all after your holy example in life and in death. Amen. Prayer for the Whole Church O glorious St. Joseph, you were chosen by God to be the foster father of Jesus, the most pure spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, and the head of the Holy Family. You have been chosen by Christ's Vicar as the heavenly Patron and Protector of the Church founded by Christ. Protect the Sovereign Pontiff and all bishops and priests united with him. Be the protector of all who labor for souls amid the trials and tribulations of this life; and grant that all peoples of the world may be docile to t he Church without which there is no salvation. Dear St. Joseph, accept the offering I make to you. Be my father, protector, and guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me purity of heart and a love for the spiritual life. After your example, let a ll my actions be directed to the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and your own paternal heart. Finally, pray for me that I may share in the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen.
