EMPOWERING BOSTON’S YOUTH
The M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program gives
Boston teens the tools they need to make smart financial decisions and
avoid bankruptcy. This year the program more than doubled from last year,
serving over 1000 students throughout the state. This program would not be
possible without the dedicated volunteers committed to giving back to the
students in our community. Special thanks to the 141 volunteers who have
donated their time to the 2013 Program, including employees at Sun Life
Financial and Liberty Mutual who adopted classrooms.

Sustaining Fir s David Gergen is the Director of the Center for Public Leadership
at the Harvard Kennedy School and a Senior Political Analyst for
CNN.
Gergen has held his post at Harvard University for the past decade,
but prior to his work in the classroom, he was a White House
advisor for four U.S. presidents. Straddling party lines, Gergen
worked in the administrations of Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton
and chronicled his experiences in his New York Times best-seller,
Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to
Clinton.
Gergen began his journalism career in the 1980s, starting with the
McNeil-Lehrer NewsHour in 1984. He was a regular commentator
on public affairs for 28 years, and was the member of two different
Peabody-Award winning election coverage teams. In the late 1980s
he was chief editor of U.S. News & World Report.

CITATION OF
Judicial Excellence
The Honorable Jeffrey M. Winik
First Justice, Boston Housing Court
The Honorable Jeffrey M. Winik has served as Boston Housing Court Judge since
1995, and has held the position of First Justice since 2004. Amid concern about
ensuring that unrepresented litigants have meaningful access to justice, he has
dedicated himself to advancing the Housing Court Lawyer for the Day Program.
Thanks to Judge Winik’s leadership, the program has expanded to provide
opportunities for volunteers to try cases and to make limited appearances for both
landlords and tenants. He tells Lawyer for the Day volunteers: “I guarantee you,
you will come away from the experience knowing you have done something
important and have helped people who would have been far worse without your
assistance.” This respect and dedication to the court system has earned him the
highest praise from all who enter his courtroom.
Since the Lawyer for the Day Program began 14 years ago, some 12,000
volunteers have helped more than 14,500 individuals. Last year alone, 457
volunteers assisted 976 tenants and 178 landlords.
Tonight, the Boston Bar Association presents a Citation of Judicial
Excellence to the Honorable Jeffrey M. Winik for his leadership as
First Justice of the Boston Housing Court.
